I got to sit next to the engine on a CRJ900!

I guess that's technically "plane spotting"?

I guess that's technically "plane spotting"?
DerGodzillaMeister@reddit
LoL 99.9% of others would say, “S**t! I had to sit next to the engine on a CRJ900!”
qzy123@reddit
CF34-8E. I work on these, but on Embraers. Sitting sideways in the inlet is surprisingly comfy, makes for a good recliner.
flowers-for-alderaan@reddit
CF34-8C is the fuselage mount. -8E is under wing.
Shark-Force@reddit
Am I looking into this too far or is it C for CRJ and E for ERJ?
flowers-for-alderaan@reddit
No, it usually tracks like that or something similar sometimes. For example LEAP-1A/-1B/-1C is 100% for Airbus, Boeing, and Comac respectively. GEnx-1B is Boeing 787 and -2B is Boeing 747. CFM strays away from that a little, I assume because it's a CFMI engine (50%/50% GE and SAFRAN) where there are CFM56-5B/C Airbus aircraft. GE9x is Boeing 777X which doesn't fully track. And then there CF6 which I believe tracks to some extent as well with (B)oeing, (A)irbus, and (D)ouglas.
It could be from a first made for gets the designation, but as thrust ratings change and new aircraft come out they are swapped around.
qzy123@reddit
I recline corrected.
flowers-for-alderaan@reddit
No worries! Other than that they are pretty much the same engine. A lot of parts are interchangeable and used across both engine lines.
RonaldoCrimeFamily@reddit
Brilliant screen name btw
No_Feeling_4613@reddit
Sorry, bro, but on the CRJs with FADEC (-700 to -1000), they installed CF34-8C5, CF34-3A1 and -3B1 on the -100/-200 series. And, size and mounting position do not make for a comfy recliner. On the EMB, for sure. Just for info: I've been riding these CRJ ponies for 31 years and ~17k+ hours, so I even know about specialties of the 100-series from the days without FMS, IRS, HUGS, FADEC ....
Unholy_Urges@reddit
CFM56-7 and LEAP-1B engines would like a chat. Better yet I don't have to sit up there while my buddy goes down multiple times for tools/parts anymore lmao. Just crawl in the inlet and take a little nap after I do my walk around
commentator184@reddit
laying in the thrust reversers on the leap is nice too, had to get in to install blocker doors, the serrated back kinda makes leg holes
Zintoatree@reddit
You're not kidding. I used to love working on something in the inlet.
aw_shux@reddit
Kinda windy, isn’t it?
qzy123@reddit
Typically hop out when the red blinky light comes on.
These_Molasses_8044@reddit
Prolly a good time to get, eh
BrtFrkwr@reddit
Bragging or complaining?
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
Ohhh definitely bragging, could never complain about that. It was such a cool experience.
3-7Kilo3one@reddit
Which airline
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
Lufthansa
No_Feeling_4613@reddit
Oh, lovely, so it's been CityLine. Which routing and when? Maybe I was in command 🤔
RonaldoCrimeFamily@reddit
Oh, you can complain. It's the worst seat in the plane for noise and vibration
iseenorocks@reddit
Best seat for aviation nerds, worst seat for everyone else.
RonaldoCrimeFamily@reddit
Nah I'll still take any aisle seat instead. I've sat next to an engine before, never again
airlinesinsider@reddit
How was your feeling when the plane took off and you could see the engines running?
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
Absolutely amazing. I'm fascinated by everything aviation related so it was an awesome experience. Everyone says it's the worst spot on the plane but for me it was really the best. It isn't as loud as you probably think, it is a bit shaky tho so you feel the vibration from the engine. Overall the flight was great - smooth and interesting and I really enjoyed it.
chaseinger@reddit
better ahead of it than aft.
jello_sweaters@reddit
Only hard part about flying aft of the engines on a CRJ is hanging onto the tail.
Dr-Surge@reddit
Surf's up bro.
Dr-Surge@reddit
God I love the CRJ900, This is the only plane I specify when I am being flown anywhere now. I've never been a fan of Boeing, especially more so these days.
Whipitreelgud@reddit
I did a trip to Edmonton in a CRJ in January. It was raining at the origin airport. When we landed the doors were iced shut. Nobody is getting out.
The ground crew wheeled over a giant hair dryer thing they called the “Herminator” to thaw the door open. It took awhile and people were pissed.
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
Haha, when we took off it was raining as well but as far as I know the plane wasn't frozen ;)
Whipitreelgud@reddit
It was -30F when we landed, so there was that. I thought it was hilarious- the Canadian passengers were not amused. Canada can’t design a plane that works in the cold. I thought that was a bit harsh.
Katana_DV20@reddit
I really enjoyed flying in this airplane which I have done twice. I was amazed at just how quiet it was in cruise and especially and landing.
Here's a cool fact -this engine was developed by GE from their TF34 engine which is used on the A10 airplane.
OMF1G@reddit
CRJ900 was my first flight ever!
I remember being shocked how tiny the interior was first, second was how much room I had in emergency row compared to the tiny interior, third was god damn those engines don't sound healthy, my last thought was holy shit this thing is rapid from a standstill.
WhiskeyMikeMike@reddit
You know it’s an A-10 when you hear airliner engines nowhere near an airport
Hdjskdjkd82@reddit
Lot of people here complain about the noise, but fact is the CF34 isn’t a loud engine at all. Certainly more noisy in the back than the front, but the back is still relatively more quiet than the overall cabin noise on older Airbuses and Boeing. Bombardier on the 700/900 deliberately placed the cargo and aft lav so the last row is just far enough away to get away from the worst of the noise. Some pretty neat engineering was done by Bombardier in the engines and the airframe to deal with it. They did such a good job, that the CRJ700/900 is exempt from some of the noise curfews, so we end up tip toeing into places late at night other airlines can’t go including Airbus NEO and 737 Max.
GabeLorca@reddit
Noise!
cosine-t@reddit
OP, I hope you brought ear plugs
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
No need!! It's music to my ears
Deno_TheDinosaur@reddit
WHAT!?!?
Every-Progress-1117@reddit
CAME HERE TO SAY THAT TOO!!
YOU SHOULD TRY AN MD80 SOMETIME. YOU WILL APPRECIATE THE RELATIVE SILENCE OF THE CRJ
I HEAR (pun intended) Il-62s ARE QUITE AN EXPERIENCE OF YOU CAN FIND ONE
freneticboarder@reddit
Beat me to it.
jebascho@reddit
"SOMETHING TO DRINK?"
mimes drink motion 🤙🏼
Deno_TheDinosaur@reddit
COFFEE AND A BISCOFF PLEASE!!
freneticboarder@reddit
Something something Dash-8...
Small_Collection_249@reddit
CRJ-900 engines are rear mounted. Plus the size looks far too big for that too. I will say I don’t know what aircraft it is though.
MathRevolutionary815@reddit
You are wrong
Small_Collection_249@reddit
They just look so big for a CRJ that’s all. Plus it looks like there’s stairs beside the window, but maybe that’s the baggage belt.
I am probably wrong based on the down vote and your comments haha.
Imaginary-Ad-4650@reddit (OP)
It's a big engine compared to this plane yes.
Reasonable-Tap-8352@reddit
Engines are in general are bigger than they seem, the only reason they look small is cause of how huge planes are.
Small_Collection_249@reddit
Probably haha
The_Crass-Beagle_Act@reddit
Unless OP is sitting in the baggage hold, I’d say that engine looks pretty rear mounted to me
jello_sweaters@reddit
"Got to?"
Afitz93@reddit
“I can’t believe the seat was still available!”
megaduce104@reddit
i will say the CF-34 has a good sound to it. very soothing at high power settings
Ok-Sample747@reddit
Takes a real avgeek to appreciate it like that. Love it!
Spiritual-Physics700@reddit
I remember as a kid in the 90s flying on the MD-80s on Spirit Airlines. One time got stuck next to the engine. As I kid I was bummed I had to look at the engine the whole trip to Atlantic City lol
RobertWilliamBarker@reddit
Did you bring ear plugs? One of the worst spots in any airplane.
RonaldoCrimeFamily@reddit
When I was a kid 30 years ago I got stuck in an MD-80 window seat with the view blocked by the cowling. I'm still mad about that today.
PhoenixSpeed97@reddit
I'd be salty too
PhoenixSpeed97@reddit
My condolences
LaximumEffort@reddit
Congratulations?
jetsetstate@reddit
OMG, fun for liek 2 sec.
These_Molasses_8044@reddit
And no video of the start up? 🤦🏻♂️
