Should I upgrade my pc?

My current pc’s specs are a intel i5 14400F, a NVIDIA 4060 and some random other stuff that I don’t think matters for my situation… Yes I know what we all think about the 4060… I got mine as soon as they were publically available and been using it since… I feel like upgrading my pc since I play a lot of vr games and stream them so my cpu gets quite used… I’ve been planning on upgrading my gpu to a 4080 super and I’ve been looking at the intel i7 13700k to complement it. Is there anything you ppl would recommend? (Maybe not as expensive as the things I listed)
ICastCats@reddit
The 14400F should actually be capable of handling VR. Are you actually having scenarios where your CPU is at 100% and your GPU usage fluctuates?
The microcode issues that were causing 13th and 14th gen to fry themselves have been patched by Intel - just update your BIOS.
There were apparently issues with 13th gen corrosion which I cannot verify.
Seeing as VR should be more gpu heavy not less, you miiight be okay doing 4080 Super + 14400F? People are doing 7600 + 4080 Super builds.

I mean I did have certain scenarios where my CPU was at 100%. Don’t exactly know how it happened (cause it’s not happening anymore) but sometimes it did and my whole vr and monitor would just freeze every now and then :/ and no it wasn’t my gpu being at 100% cause I know that’s what happens with the gpu too. The only issue Im really having with the 4060 currently is that I can’t play vr games at higher quality…
PiotrekDG@reddit
How many times has it been this far?
ICastCats@reddit
I wasn’t aware of other attempts to fix underlying code tbh, and news outlets seem to indicate it’s fine.
Either way if OP has a functioning CPU already there’s no need to change given how it’s functional and capable.
finH1@reddit
To me it feels weird to initially buy a 4060 then suddenly decide to have the budget for a 4080 super
Emotional-Hawk-3028@reddit (OP)
I didn’t have the budget back when I got the 4060 to just get a 4080s instead :)
NEO71011@reddit
FOMO
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
Buying 2 gpu's in the same generation is sort of weird. Also really small cpu gains by jumping. What is your goal here? to waste as much money as possible?
I'd recommend keeping your system as it's modern/recent. If the 4060 isn't cutting it, you can consider upgrading but I'd leave the cpu alone until there's a bigger jump to be had.
Emotional-Hawk-3028@reddit (OP)
Yeah I read some of the comments and I’m probably just gonna wait for the 50 series to release. Don’t know what I’m gonna do about the cpu but I think I could definitely use it for a while before considering upgrading. And no, my goal wasn’t wasting as much money as possible but I was planning to give the parts I was gonna upgrade to my roommate since he’s using a gtx 1650 (which somehow still does a good job with even the newer games :O)
Role_Playing_Lotus@reddit
I agree fully on this. Upgrading so soon when you have such recent parts would be a complete waste of money. But people have the right to waste their own money and the advice of strangers may not make a difference.
OP, I recommend you wait before purchasing anything and start watching Jason's videos on his PC Builder channel. He has a wealth of information that's easy to understand and it will help you make sense of your next upgrades.
I would also recommend watching GPU and CPU Benchmark videos by Gamers Nexus, which will help you understand when an upgrade makes sense.
Personally, I wouldn't upgrade for anything less than a 30% performance increase as it applies to my specific uses.
FootlooseFrankie@reddit
First question which should be at the top is what is your monitor and or VR headset .
Emotional-Hawk-3028@reddit (OP)
I’m using the Bigscreen Beyond as my vr and my main monitor is the Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM, which my pc specs can’t actually quite match yet
Chutney-Blanket-Scar@reddit
I’d hang onto it until the new gen comes out and you can upgrade to a 4070 ti super, or better. Your pc is decent, so unless you’re due for an upgrade or you’re having malfunctions, you may want to wait for a bit before upgrading.
gus_11pro@reddit
i would wait for the geforce 5080 and get the core ultra 9 285K
Penrosian@reddit
Upgrade to a 5080, or at least wait for the 4080 used market to be flooded after the 50 series drops. As for cpu I'm not too sure.
Substantial_Jump_989@reddit
The price might come down a bit on the 4080, but probably not as much as anyone would like, esp since the 5080 seemingly is going to be priced between the og 4080 launch and the 4090 pricing. That leaves the 4080 super slotted right where it’s at. Only way it comes down below 850 is if the 5070 has comparable performance.
Penrosian@reddit
What matters is that it will come down, even if just a little.
Substantial_Jump_989@reddit
That's a question for the op, it's it worth waiting a few months or more for this price drop on 4080 Supers, or does he want to upgrade his gaming experience today. You're welcome to your opinion. I've offered mine.
Melliodass@reddit
Avoid 13 and 14 gen Intel CPUs because of stability issues!
Only_Expression_3910@reddit
They should been fixed on the newly produced high end cpu, but just for some reviews. Also Intel letting ppl to contact them to trade out their faulty high end that got the problem for a new one
Grydian@reddit
They said that more than once now though. Are you going to trust it when they keep saying its fixed? You really should wait a few months for the data to come in proving they are fixed now.
Only_Expression_3910@reddit
Yep 👍, I have trust for Intel
xf0x68@reddit
same, i think that for the most part they’re fine now, i have a 14900KS and i haven’t had a single issue from the day i purchased it
legotrix@reddit
as far as one know the F variants were fine.
xf0x68@reddit
yea F variants are fine cuz they can’t be overclocked but i have a KS, which is great for OC
legotrix@reddit
I got a used 12400f on an expensive new B760 motherboard, I avoided the bullet for buying memory instead of power because I wanted to upgrade over time,
but now I may decide on Barlettle CPU because I was in love with Linux Mint, Linux is bliss, and for that I need all P CORES.
Public_Courage5639@reddit
Only i9s, i7s and a little bit 13600k/14600k were impacted, not the 14400f in any case
legotrix@reddit
why not buy the 5070/ish card from Amazon and sell the 4060 to fund the CPU, or put it all in an Acktek case and get an AM5 platform?
I have similar specs 12400f and rx7600, it bugs you I relate, but is nothing dead yet, with the new releases the 14700k or 13700k will go cheaper but take into consideration buying a CPU NEW,
everyone wants better ray tracing and editing horsepower however is still a capable machine.. if you have a job, why not, we are grown-ups with grown-up money, but we could make money from PC flipping.
Jako998@reddit
You honestly have a good Rig right now. I wouldn't worry about upgrading for a couple years tbh
NBLLLL@reddit
best move right now is just wait for the 50 series card, buy one if it good or snag, if it bad then just snag a second hand 4080 super from people who upgrade, win - win
AdBasic2725@reddit
Wait to 50 series come out but the 4080S is a solid card I’m on it myself with an 5700x3d can run anything 4k np you will see an uplift not generational but a decent leap forward we are close to 50 series despite it still be a few a way
Substantial_Jump_989@reddit
Op, the argument against a cpu upgrade makes sense, unless you’re going to do some production work (which somehow everyone seems to be doing).
Now if you’re just looking to upgrade your gaming performance, the 4080 super on the used market can be had for around 850. (Ask me how I know…). So if you go used and you offload your 4060 for anywhere near 300, upgrading to a 4080 super for under 600 seems like a good deal.
Amazing-Emergency-15@reddit
It's your money, if you can and need to upgrade go for it
Lofi_Joe@reddit
I would wait for 5xxx NVIDIA series.
doppido@reddit
The 4060 will be fine until the next generation is just wait for that and see what deals look like 8-10 months from now
opensrcdev@reddit
Ignore the haters on the 4060. It's a good GPU and is very efficient. Low power consumption, low temperatures, and quiet. However, the RTX 4080 Super would be an awesome upgrade! I would definitely recommend upgrading if you feel the need and have the budget.
I went with the RTX 4070 Ti Super, and am awaiting its arrival. Coming from an RTX 2080, it'll be a massive boost!
Grydian@reddit
You just need a much stronger GPU. I would wait for the 5080 and just get that.
Low_Yam_9157@reddit
13 and 14th gen stability issue is overblown. I've never had a problem nor has anyone else I've known with 13/14th gen.
My go-to is that if you'll use the performance, get the best you can get now instead of waiting for new stuff to come out. Spend more time using your system and having fun instead of waiting for the next thing. Obviously, spend responsibly, without going broke or into debt or neglecting other life costs.
iboughthisusername@reddit
I’d wait for the 15th Gen to come out they might have better stability
