ULPT: Lie about saving people from parking tickets

Go around leaving notes on peoples cars saying “parking maid tried to give you a ticket but I said this was my car, if you’d like here’s my Venmo”

I have lived in two cities that had people who did that more or less for a living? They would put a xeroxed sheet under you wiper saying they saw your meter ran out and the put a quarter in for you, would you please send them something? Both places the city made it illegal to do that. You can get fined for feeding a meter that is not for your car. They also cracked down in one hood because a bunch of us worked in a place there and people would rotate who was going to go out and feed the meters for everybody. Nope, they would bitch even at that level. So every four hours almost everybody would go out and walk up the street and feed the meters.

You'd think in this digital age, if you live in a city, you could download an app for the parking meters in the city, then when you go to park, you can either tap to pay or go into the app to do so as you leave the car, then get notifications on your phone when you are down to X(selectable) minutes so you can feed it or get to your car...
(I am not a city dweller, for all I know, they may already have this tech)

My city has a parking app. It is pretty handy
Tommyblockhead20@reddit
My city has gone entirely digital. I don’t think you can even pay with cash/without a phone of some kind.
breakermw@reddit
Seems like an accessibility issue. What if I don't own a smartphone?
Tommyblockhead20@reddit
Well they have a website so as long as your phone has a web browser you can pay, but not all dumb phones have one, and obviously it doesn’t work if you don’t have a phone. That was kinda the point of my original comment, that you can’t pay.
breakermw@reddit
Yeah fair. I still remember trying to pay in one lot that switched from cash/card payment machine to an app. App kept crashing so I had to call some number. In the end took me like 15 minutes to pay $3.
Tommyblockhead20@reddit
Oh ya, they might also have a phone number for web browser less phones, but there’s still no parking meters so idk how you would pay with cash/without a phone.
breakermw@reddit
Yeah but even calling in you need a debit or credit card which plenty of folks, especially low income folks, don't have. Almost feels like a subtle way to stop certain people from parking in certain places...I know that isn't the intent but it feels like this stuff is never considered. The digital thing also feels like a way they can raise prices faster...
DanCoco@reddit
Than eff those ppl... how dare they not conform to having a smartphone... or a debit card... how dare they try to exist in this car centric infrastructure... (says the city planners, not me.)
Mysterious-Ad8438@reddit
Yeah this is standard in my city
breakermw@reddit
They do have this in a few cities. Can pay via app and extend your time from your phone usually up to a set limit of time.
ericfromct@reddit
A lot of cities have apps, but the problem is a lot of the parking spots they want you to move your car after X many hours. Which is ridiculous. If you’re at work and there are spots available, I really don’t understand why they care if that spot is being paid for. Frankly it would make more money than having people leaving and not occupying the spot for periods of time. But governments aren’t known for making the most sense.
MrLoronzo@reddit
A lot of cities have meters to try and keep people from staying in one area too long. It’s to encourage traffic to the businesses in the area. Not saying everywhere is like that but several of the larger cities I’ve lived in will have a 2 hr limit on the main strip but free or reduced parking further out.
IaniteThePirate@reddit
Everywhere I’ve parked that has an app for the meter won’t let you park for more than an hour or two. If you try to add more money it tells you that you can’t do that.
GnPQGuTFagzncZwB@reddit
I think they are trying to discourage people for parking there more than one meters worth, without putting it into law. If they did that I could see people who were parked next to each other going out and swapping.. nit it has not got that bad yet. Prime places in town and workers get there at like 7 and shoppers come after 9 so they get stuck parking further out. The city tries hard to lure in business, but man they like that money from the meters. I have to say downtown has fared better than the mall though, even though you can park at the mall.
miraculum_one@reddit
In most places it's against the law to feed the meter (i.e. come back and put more money in) even if it's your own car since the time restrictions apply regardless of the meter.
PutNameHere123@reddit
I can’t imagine there’s people out there dumb enough to fall for that but I guess it’s worth a shot
Aetheldrake@reddit
There are. Lots. Definitely.
Jumpy-Ad6470@reddit
maybe its just me but I wouldn't send a dime.
Ain't a fan of paying for services I didn't request.
jchristsproctologist@reddit
ah yes, the good old officious intermeddling
breakermw@reddit
Also I wouldn't believe them and assume it is a scam.
slmrxl@reddit
Likewise. It's passive aggressive and reeks of desperation. I saw someone driving the other day who had their venmo posted on their rear window seeking donations. I'd rather tell them to eff off
Petunia_Pete@reddit
Definitely not just you. I wouldn’t either
But i bet that would work on 3 out of 10 people
Frodobagggyballs@reddit
I’d probably get spammed with request instead
BreadEnthusiast98@reddit
That’s awful! Does it work?
SpoonFed_1@reddit
1 out of 20 people will fall for this
but that is all scammers need, just one idiot out of 20
Jamsemillia@reddit
Nah I'll make sure even more people get towed - fuck cars
occupy_this7@reddit
Yeah this is illegal
ImBetterThanYou42@reddit
Nah, not illegal. Just unethical.
dacjames@reddit
This is definitely, 100% illegal in the US and likely everywhere in the western world since the concept of fraud at issue here goes back to British common law.
It’s about intent. If you intentionally got someone to give you money under false pretenses, it’s fraud and that’s illegal. The law doesn’t care how dumb the victim may be for falling for it.
Still a fine ULPT in my book but definitely not legal.
Tommyblockhead20@reddit
Lying for financial gain is fraud, which is a crime, at least in my state.
SoggyInfluence2743@reddit
which law
Tommyblockhead20@reddit

Supetorus@reddit
I know this is unethical and a life pro tip, but scammer / spammers sick so please take your post and leave.
NaughtyFoxtrot@reddit
Overruled. This action causes no harm and is entirely incumbent upon a person dumb enough to actually send the money. We'll allow it.
Tommyblockhead20@reddit
This is unethical LPT, not illegal LPT. Lying for financial gain is literally the definition of fraud. Not a lawyer, but I feel like victim has a decent case
Supetorus@reddit
That's the definition of a scam. I get the people who have a crappy situation and want to deal with it in a dirty way. I'm entertained by the creative ways people come up with to deal with the situations on this subreddit. However, people who steal or defraud are scumbags in my book and there's no way to justify that kind of action.
