Intel Core Ultra worth for Productivity?
Posted by thes1ppi@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 33 comments
Hi there, I am looking to build a work pc (in the coming 4 weeks would be good to have it).
Tasks: Simple stuff but 30-40% of the time video editing (4K 10 Bit 4:2:2 timeline with 3-4 cameras simultaneously).
Question: Because of the decoding of the video files an Intel CPU should be beneficial (right?) so I was looking at the 14900K/13700K. Should I wait a few days for the 285K/265K or will the benefits be minor (also regarding future upgrades)?
Thanks so much for your help!
Best regards from Germany.

I'd say yes. Intel's integrated GPU gets a huge update with Arrow Lake, and it is indeed great for video editing. Unless something goes horribly wrong, Arrow Lake will be better than 14-th gen in every regard.

4 months later here .. no it didnt. Arrow lake appeared to be like 50series nvidia cards. Couldnt outpowered previous gen

I'm very happy with mine ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Wait. For. The. Reviews.
It could be great. It could be a dud. Until people that aren’t Intel put it through its paces, we do not know.

You are right. I will wait for next week and watch every review with a bucket full of popcorn

Did you end up buying?

For video editing isnt it better to get something with nvidia?
thes1ppi@reddit (OP)
Well yes and no…it depends on the software that is used (premiere or Davinci for example) and what codec. Within premiere only intel supports hardware decoding (for 4K 10bit 4:2:2) puget systems has some really good articles about that

What did you decide?

So lets talk...what do you guys think?
For gaming Arrow Lake seems stupid, but for productivity...especially Adobe Premiere it seems worth it?
For me in Germany a PC with 265k is cheaper 50 € cheaper than with 14900k. So should i try and go for 265k (or even 285k for 200 €) more?
30 % of the time I am working with Adobe Premiere (3 to 4 cams, 4k 10 bit 4:2:2). The rest of the time is none demanding office stuff....

YES WAIT JUST TO SEE THE PERFORMANCE BUT I HEARD THAT THE INTEL ULTRA IS NOT FOR GAMING MORE FOR WORK AND IF YOU REALLY IN RUSH JUST BUY THE I9 14900K BUT KNOW THAT YOU WILL NOT HAVE OPTION TO UPGRADE
Bust3r14@reddit
Intel won't be necessarily better for software decoding; if you're talking hardware decoding, the i5-12500 has the same iGPU as the i9-14900k, so no reason to go all out for that.
Regarding the new chips: wait for reviews like everyone else. This sub, among others, will be very busy October 24th.
mountaingoatgod@reddit
I do wonder about the igpu in the new chips though
Bust3r14@reddit
so do the rest of us. that's what the reviews are for.
kyralfie@reddit
Well if you want intel waiting for Ultra 200 Series is a no-brainer over infamous 13th and 14th gen parts.
Philluminati@reddit
I would definitely be choosing the 15th Ultra CPUs over 14th gen ones
user007at@reddit
Even tho Intel fixed the prior issues with raptor lake, I would wait till arrow lake launches. It performs nearly the same, but is way more efficient.
No_Guarantee7841@reddit
Let me check my crystal ball to find out if it will degrade or have other issues in the future like previous gen did.
commontatersc2@reddit
Yep my tarot cards say that it may or may not be not too bad, possibly.
LoserZero@reddit
Yep, my magic eight ball said, "Reply hazy, try again." & "Cannot predict now"
wordfool@reddit
No-one knows how the Core Ultra 9 will perform. Leaks and Intel PR suggest about on par with, or slightly ahead of, the 14900K but with a lower power draw. We'll know more at the end of next week. Considering the issue with the 13th/14th gen I'd definitely wait another 10 days before committing.

Yes
gus_11pro@reddit
i would get the 285k and wait for geforce 50 for rendering stuff
EnigmaSpore@reddit
We’re mere days away from the 285k. Might as well wait it out and see how independent reviews go.
op3l@reddit
Wait for reviews and after that wait a bit more. It’s a first gen product and there are always issues with first gen products.
YesterdayPractical24@reddit
i'm imagining software compatibility could be an issue. i would avoid early adopting for a work computer. 12th gen FTW IMO. it's a very stable generation, and for work, stability should be a top priority.
Lion12341@reddit
13/14 gen Intel CPUs have been a disaster in reliability. Wouldn't trust them so soon on something so expensive.
laffer1@reddit
Wait for reviews but likely the best choice for video.
I would not say best for all productivity though. The 14th gen are much slower than ryzen for compiler performance in the real world.
No_Cauliflower633@reddit
I'm pretty excited about the 285k but I haven't preordered yet. Will want to see the benchmarks for sure on the 24th.
jdm121500@reddit
I'd probably wait to see what the reviews say. For video editing it should basically be the best option since it has the upgraded Alchemist media engine which raptorlake doesn't have.
FluffyDistrict2079@reddit
Im pretty sure 14900k is better to get
Ripe-Avocado-12@reddit
Hard to say without 3rd party benchmarks. Wait for reviews.
