Finally getting around to the “rat racer” Lincoln
Posted by flipflopsanddunlops@reddit | projectcar | View on Reddit | 51 comments
Picked up this Lincoln a few years ago to do something with and I finally have some time to focus on it. It’s going to be really ambitious and completely off the wall dumb but now it’s to show what I’m capable of doing. Yes I’ve done all these mods before for others and never all on one car but now it’s time to do it all to this poor car. I start to chop tomorrow and if people are interested I’ll be posting updates along the way

that thing's too nice to ruin

That’s why I’m not ruining it, I’m just making it my own because I think it’s ugly as it sits

The mods sound cool, but two genuine questions.
Do you live with your parents.
Have you ever completed a project of that scale and complexity before?
Question one is actually more general than just parenta and is along the lines of "Do you have a place to work on and complete a project of this magnitude, and will dping so be a burden on those around you if you are working on it in a driveway/shop/garage you do not personally own?"
I ask this because your list of cool mods sounds a lot like the sort I made when I was younger, and rather than being finished and awesome ended up instead as a lot of tension and upset with family members and friends I assumed would be cool with my exploded projects all over their yards and driveways.
Question two is because I'm curious to see what else you have done. In no way am I mocking or saying that you can't accomplish this, just my first thought was "man that sounds like some shit I would come up with" and then I flip through some pictures of rigs I ambitiously destroyed back in the day and wince.
I wish ya the best of luck, and not saying to not go for it, it's your car.
I had a couple MadMax candidates before I settled on my 78 Cougar from a junkyard. One of the ones I almost chopped up turned out to be a rather rare car, and I'm really glad I paused to think about it first.
Anyway, best of luck! Post pics.
And like, it's your car, enjoy it however you like, just follow through.

Appreciate the concern my friend! No, I don’t live with my parents, I’ve been working on cars for 15+ years and I’ve done some pretty big projects! I looked through a bunch of my old pictures to see if I can find any but I’ve done probably 8-10 other big builds and have another 5 on the go! I’m also very fortunate that I live in a area that is so car crazy that most people have a project car or know someone with one
NuclearWasteland@reddit
Rad. Yeah, I really don't mean offense by it, but I think it's a valid thing to ask anyone about their projects.
I burnt SO much time, money and good will of friends and family with my own projects that I just wanna see others avoid that pitfall.
I mean, not that I would have listened to me back then, lol.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
Oh no offence taken! It’s a valid point to ask about.
Very fortunately for me, it’s not really much of a waste of money because I have most of the material and parts Already at my disposal! And as for favours with friends and family, lucky fairly talented and help them out with everything and never look for anything in return so I build them up quick
As for the pics most of them are lost on phones that no longer work but my biggest one recently was a RV resto mod that’s on my profile somewhere

Quad turbo 460? Two sequentials on each bank?
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
That’s the plan, I have four 37mm turbos so I figure that would give each bank roughly 7-10 PSI boost with faster spool times and not really stressing the engine but plans change
isthatsuperman@reddit
She’s gonna rip. You doing blow through or EFI?
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
Blow through, I feel it’s more on par with the rat aspect
isthatsuperman@reddit
A real rat would do draw through 😉
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
That it true
isthatsuperman@reddit
Blow through gets the hat on top of the carb, draw through gets a special manifold that the carb sits on top of. There’s pros and cons to both, but draw through came first.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
Oh ok, that makes sense! In that case the plan was blow through because you can’t use intercooler with draw I don’t think
isthatsuperman@reddit
Nope, but draw through doesn’t need to be cooled because of the fuel that’s in suspension. (at least for single and twins) but you can do water/meth injection for further cooling, twin sequentials would probably need it.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
That would make sense, but with draw in older cars doesn’t it have a harder time atomizing fuel or am i mistaken?
isthatsuperman@reddit
You’re thinking about pooling. It’s a problem for poorly designed systems. Draw throughs are actually great at atomizing because the mixture gets chopped through the turbine blades, but you need to keep the turbos as close to the intake as possible and limit curves in the piping to keep the mixture in suspension. It’s also why you can’t use intercoolers because the fuel condensates and pools up in the intercooler making a nice little bomb.
You also don’t use waste gates.
The nice thing about draw throughs is if you don’t plan on running over 15psi they’re far cheaper and easier to set up(pretty much the cost of turbos and piping, and a manifold if you don’t fabricate one) and there’s no turbo lag. You can have power through the entire power band with a nice boost when the turbos finally spool up.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
That’s actually very useful to know! It makes a lot of sense and that’s why it’s commonly used with super chargers because it’s direct to the manifold. I really appreciate the time you’ve given me! I’ll definitely be taking that into consideration now for what I’m going to do, I’ll be keeping the sub updated as the project progress
isthatsuperman@reddit
I’ll be looking for the updates, especially the wide body! I always wanted to wide body a continental or el dorado. Lmao
There’s a great book called “turbochargers” by Hugh Macinnes. If you get the 76? first edition it has everything you need to know about draw through setups and the 81/86? Edition has more on blow through setups. eBay has them for like $15.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
I honestly can’t thank you enough! I’m certainly excited to see the body that I design!
Flanagansdog@reddit
Mr Lahey will be looking for it tho

cobra_mist@reddit
ok… but she looks kinda cherry?
couldn’t you lower her just a little, mild chop the roof, put in cherry bombs and fishtails and have a modern lead sled?
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
I already have a 69 Newport that’s getting that treatment, I want something different and I don’t have any bases for a rat racer so I figured I’d sacrifice this one, if it makes you feel any better it’s not in as good a shape as it looks! Besides manically and the frame it’s in rough shape on the driver side and rear
cobra_mist@reddit
fair enough, don’t let me stop your fun! if she’s body on frame you could make her into a real roadster. which would def make putting a cage in easier
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
That’s definitely a possibility!

Mark v was my first car , BTW nice white walls
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
It’s was a great car! And thanks, they are practically brand new! I actually bought the car because it was cheaper than buying them new for my Chrysler! My dumb ass didn’t realize It’s not the same rim size. So they are probably going on a 54 super 88 if it fits
YoungPurple9246@reddit
The best is when it's on the highway rides like a ship....I really miss that car
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
It’s probably one of the nicest driving cars, I hope you get one again someday

Lol @ Wide Body. I can't wait to see it.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
I should have a mock up this week after I start foaming the fenders to get an idea for the shape and size!
Nutella_Zamboni@reddit
My aunt had a 78 Cougar with a hopped up 351 and keeping it between the lines was hard. I can't imagine a wide body version of it.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
It’s not even like I’m planning to widen it only an inch or 2, it’s going to be far from road legal!
Fun-Ad9928@reddit
Bless my fuck bud. Way she goes.

Worked with a couple chefs out west in 1980s they had these . & they were real Dicks but maybe that’s not relevant

She’ll make a fine demo derby car once you’re done with those mods, lol.
flipflopsanddunlops@reddit (OP)
It’s mainly going to be a pace car to advertise for a few small business so once it inevitably breaks I’ll probably just trailer it until it rots
