Hi I just turned 18 and I’m wondering what type of gun I should get for home defense and for just going out to shoot? My budget is $600
Glum-Contribution380@reddit
22lr BLG STG 44 (for plinking): ~$400
Woden8@reddit
Extar EP9
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
oo what’s that
Woden8@reddit
9mm Pistol Caliber Carbine that takes Glock mags. It has proven to be very reliable thus far and is only $450 + a transfer fee to your local FFL. I would check with your local FFL first though, as some states have weird restrictions about under 21 and pistols.
KillerSwiller@reddit
If it's a pistol caliber carbine, it's classed as a rifle, not a pistol.
Woden8@reddit
It is definitely classed as a pistol. They charged things up a bit when the pistol brace ban was in effect, but it’s definitely a pistol with a pistol brace now.
justrobdoinstuff@reddit
The carbine has a 16 inch barrel, it's a rifle n there's nothing else it's classified as.
The regular EP9 has a 6.5 inch barrel. Therefore it's a pistol unless someone gets a tax stamp attached to it.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
thank you much!
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
ooo okay i’ll definitely check it out
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
Are you allowed handguns in your neck of the woods
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
no we have to be 21 to have handguns
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
-12 gauge shotguns
Maverick 88
Mossberg 590
Remington 870
-PCC rifles
Ruger PC Carbine
Kel tec sub2000
-actual rifles
Norinco Sks
(Assuming you can’t posses Ar-15s in your state)
If you can possess Ar’s just buy an Ar-15 they range from ~400 to ~2k
Hairy_Ferret9324@reddit
Id get a PCC, aka a rifle chambered in a pistol caliber such as 9mm. 9mm is affordable compared to 5.56 and other rifle cartridges, letting you hit the range more often and for longer.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
i’ll look into that forreal

Must be nice
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
not that nice but it is nice to be able to get one at 18

Pump action shotgun.....full stop.
Easy to learn how to operate it, and the variety of shotshell options is awesome. Theoretically you could go deer hunting in the morning(slugs), bird hunting on the way to the truck after that(birdshot). Then go run a clay competition mid day(target loads), and still have time to jump in a deer stand or walk a field for birds in the afternoon before defending your home that night(buckshot) with the same shotgun. Some pumps even come with an extra barrel from the factory so you can have dedicated HD n hunting barrels. For the flexibility to have a decent to perfect gun for most situations, it's hard to beat a good scattergat.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
ooo wait that sounds super awesome I’m a definitely look into that is there a specific shotgun?
justrobdoinstuff@reddit
Somebody suggested the field/security combo, if I were in the market for another shotty that would be my first choice.
After the holidays I'm personally snagging a 940 pro, because I want a good semiauto shogun I can customize myself.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
I have an event soon and should be getting paid more do you know any shotgun I can get and customize for around $1400 dollars??
justrobdoinstuff@reddit
That's a bad idea.
It's your first gun, and I doubt you're a gunsmith. Guns are made out of metal to contain little explosions right next to your face and upper body. If you don't do something correctly when you put everything together you could absolutely fuck yourself up.
Start by learning what everything is (on your gun), what it does, and if it needs lube or not. Understand how it comes apart, and how it goes back together correctly so you can operate it n clean it when it's time.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
okay i will thank you so much!! you’re amazing
honeybutthole733@reddit
First gun should be a decent AR-15. First priority for "upgrades" should be a reputable optic, then sling, then reputable light. It's the best platform for home defense, most user customizable, readily available, and ammo is plentiful. I'd buy a BCM.

bubuscus@reddit
I'd recommend saving some more for a decent ar. It's hard to find any decent rifles for under 600. If you're determined to stay at that 600 range, get a 12g shotgun
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
Is there any certain 12g shotgun that you recommend?
2016TRDPro@reddit
Used Remington 870 12 gauge. [Mic drop]
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
awesome sauce
nagurski03@reddit
Maverick 88 or Mossberg 500.
The 88 is cheaper, the 500 is easier to customize.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
I think i’m a go with the cheaper one for now
RastaFazool@reddit
The Maverick 88 field/security combo is hands down, dollar for dollar, the best value on the market. It punches way above its price tag.
nagurski03@reddit
Depending on taxes and whatnot, you might be able to get both a Maverick 88 and a Ruger 10-22 in your budget.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
I’ll check that out right now to see if I can
MunitionGuyMike@reddit
Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 and get a weapon mounted light. I like streamlight. Good brand and cheap
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
I will look into the lights I’m looking at some Mossberg’s right now
MunitionGuyMike@reddit
Good gun!
Just make sure to get some training and watch some videos on different ammo types for shotguns and home defense. A lot of misinformation out there.
Also, if you get a shotgun, look up “how to pattern your shotgun.”
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
i will watch that I think right now i’m going for a 12 ga shotgun for home defense and a super duper cheap 22lr for shooting and practicing!
RastaFazool@reddit
Mossberg 500.
Some 500's come with an 18.5" security barrel and a 28" field barrel for under $500.
If you want to spend a bit less, the Mossberg Maverick 88 has the same combo for around $300. It is almost identical to the 500 but lacks a few minor bells and whistles to cut costs.
If you want a more tactical style and are OK with sacrificing versatility, the mossberg 590 is in your budget as well.
There is a big aftermarket for all three models, so you can trick it out to your hearts content.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
also do you know anything about the Winchester Wildcat one of my friend’s have one and he said it’s a good gun to just shoot with to practice.
bubuscus@reddit
Any .22lr is great to practice with. They're just terrible for home defense which is why I recommended what I did.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
I’m looking at some mossberg ones right now
bubuscus@reddit
If you really want to you can get yourself a mossberg 88 shotgun and a cheaper .22lr rifle. That mossberg is on average less than 300 new
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
that’s what i’m looking at right now it’s just so hard to choose
bubuscus@reddit
Take your time with it and do proper research to make sure it would be a good fit.
Willowtree201@reddit (OP)
i’m watching review videos about the guns i’ve been looking at
MunitionGuyMike@reddit
As a guy who used a rem 870 for high school trap shooting competitions and went to nationals all 3 years I was doing it, 870s are good too.
Moss 500s are also excellent guns but I’ve heard that recent Remington guns haven’t been the best in QC. Not sure if that’s an issue anymore though
