Is houseshare a good idea ?

I'm a male in my early twenties from the middle of nowhere in the countryside and I have been thinking about moving into a houseshare in the city. I'm just wondering if anyone has any experiences and advice they'd like to share. I'm most worried about not getting along with housemates or just moving in with a bunch of creeps haha.

I did it, middle of nowhere Scotland to house share London for a job. I had a hotel from the company while I found a place so had a bit of time to get it right. Worked out okay for me, found a house with 2 other quite introverted motorcycle owners of a similar age to myself. Hardly know each other were in house, go out on our bikes at weekends for lunch in the summer together, worked out really well for the year I lived there before I got my own place.

I've had four or five houseshares with strangers now and only one of them had a majority of housemates i disliked, and that was because I had no other option than to live them. as others have rightly said, if you take the time to vet the property and meet its tenants, you can make an informed decision.
"9/10 times it sucks" is just bullshit. reddit being reddit as per. I've met some great people in houseshares and as some others have rightly said, you gain valuable life experience and stories.

It's a good way to meet people Do your share of chores & buying stuff ( loo roll etc)
2-4 beds are easier than the larger households
If there is one housemate who does extra cleaning notice & buy little thankyous

Depends hugely on who the others are

Woah. I had a great time sharing a house in London in my late 20s to mid 30s and have made some really good friends. Sure, occasionally we had pain in the arse housemates but nothing like what other posters have suggested.

You could end up with a bunch of creeps, a bunch of people you barely interact with, or some people you end up being good friends with. It is a lucky dip these days. If you do not get along with people then you can always move though.

House shares 9/10 times suck dick or clit, delete as appropriate.
People do it because they have to for financial reasons.

No. It's something most people, myself included do out of necessity. You can learn some life skills I suppose but if you're not paying rent now then I don't see why you'd start unless you're going to move to advance a career as well.

Yeah it can be luck of the draw but provided the place isn't an absolute tip when you do a viewing and you actually get to meet the housemates. You should be able to make a reasonably informed decision.
In my experience it's best to keep an eye out and check how much consultation the current housemates get on new tenant. If the landlord or property management people decide. Then it's likely they'll foist some absolute dickhead housemate on you further on down the line.

Sure - it’s a learning experience on how to deal with arseholes, get on with people you wouldn’t generally have to deal with etc.
Great life skills.
I would just make sure you don’t have much of value as it could well get nicked.

For starters, what’s ‘the city’? Are we assuming London??
