I remember around the early 90's my folks had split and for a Christmas my mom got me a Discman and my dad got me 3 CD's.
There was Nirvana's first album, The B52s, and a compilation of techno songs called This is Techno 4 (Dad really went wide with the genres).
I still listen to the techno one just for the hit of pure nostalgia.

I was LUCKY.
Me and my small family were having a shit year, and like OP, there may've been some compensation in the fact I was treated to a (and the) first cd-player..though it was cheap, and clunky-big, it was amazing still. Matched with old 70's Amp&speakers picked up from some yard sale, Grade9, edge of 14y/o.
What sole CD did my parents get me? Rod Stewart. Why? I don't know. I was offended. My tapes were hiphop and Anthrax and stupid shit like Weird Al.
Every Picture Tells A Story. Older Rod Stewart, 1971! When (certainly clueless to me in every way) The Faces were his 'backup band'. I listened to it because it was all I had yet - and it got in me.
That was like a miracle. I really didn't need more Anthrax or whatever the hell else I thought I wanted. I became an audiophile, musically, and that album helped.
Damn it Jams! and all the more on those 70's woodpanel gear I played it on. ☺️

I don't remember who got it for me, but I remember getting it for Christmas along with my first big stereo with a CD player. I very quickly picked up a couple more CDs limp Bizkit, something from Wutang, and a Godsmack CD. I don't remember the names of Any of them. And yes my music taste was all over the place in the mid to late 90s.

I got my first PC in 1994 and a CD-ROM-drive (Quad speed) for it early 1995.
I read in a magazine that I could listen to audio CDs with it, too!
So, excited and curious, I went into the music store and looked for the cheapest CD that I might find interest in.
Since my musical awakening wasn't before 1996(ish), I decided upon a radio comedy program for 15 DEM (around $14 today).
And it worked. I could listen to it with Windows 95's internal CD player!
Curiously the CD was a miss press: it had all titles on a single, 70min long track. So it was kind of listening to a record on my PC.
(And yes, I tried to copy the cda-file to the HDD.)
My first music CD was a German techno album around a year later.

It was 1990. The movie Ghost, starring Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore, was the top movie of the summer. It featured the Righteous Brothers’ hit song “Unchained Melody.” I was 11 years old. I walked into Sam Goody to buy the Ghost soundtrack, but instead I walked out having bought MC Hammer’s classic “Please Hammer Don’t Hurt ‘Em”. From that day forward, I was 2 Legit 2 Quit.

I do. I got my first CD player and my first 2 CDs for Christmas in 1995. I was a late adopter since I had like 200 cassettes. This was the year I turned 18 so my parents got me a little shelf CD stereo system that could take 3 CDs and had dual cassettes that you could record off the CD player. Or copy a cassette tape. Anyway aside from the CD player they got me Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzmosis which was the new one at the time and they got me Smashing Pumpkin's Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness which was a double CD. 28 tracks.

Let me paint you a picture:
I was gifted a mixtape of EuroDance songs circa 1993 by a cousin while visiting them overseas. I came back home singing the original lyrics to songs like Boom Boom Boom - and being too naive to grasp why we had radio edits back home.
I suddenly decided I was a music connoisseur - I had just bought myself a portable Diskman, a budget duty free one that skip when you moved it slightly - so we went to the markets, I had just started woodwind lessons so obviously the first CD I bought was Kenny G cause he was so boss with his smooth jazz saxophone and long luxurious curly hair.
Looking back, I think my mum stole that CD not long after we got home.

I was disappointed but played up excited for them because they did get the album I wanted, I just couldn't listen to it because we didn't have a CD player (and I hadn't asked for one). It must have been around 94-95 as I transitioned from elementary to high school. I remember doing one of those Columbia House deals and started using the money I got from delivering newspapers to pay for CDs I would order from there (yep, I was the sucker).
But, I must have owned a CD player if I was ordering CDs so I had to have owned a CD, right? GAHHH, this is driving me crazy that I can't pinpoint it.
I remember copying my sister's CDs to tape, like Gin Blossoms and Oasis. But what did I own?!?

The soundtrack to Jurassic Park. There were different styles of cds. I had one that had the T. Rex skull on it in flat black with just neutral CD behinds it. My cousin copied his CD of The Simpsons Sing the Blues onto a tape for me, and it took me many years to realize that he had edited it to take out the "Well, you're damned if you do" parts of Deep Deep Trouble, very similar to how the music video version was edited. First CD: Counting Crows - August and Everything After. My sister bought it for me but I didn’t have a CD player. So mom went out and bought me a cd player. I felt so cool listening to that album. As a melancholic 13 year old, that music resonated with me. I wouldn’t be ready for grunge and the Seattle sound for another 7 years, despite nirvana making it big a couple years prior.

The first CD I owned was a home recording project where a friend of my dad's built a recording studio in his house, and made an album on which he played all of the instruments himself, and had disks manufactured that he sold. I don't really count that one though.
The first CD I actually picked out for myself and bought was Tragic Kingdom. My family was on vacation (which was rare for my family) and we were at some mall somewhere, and I went to The Wall and was listening to different albums on a listening station, and I heard Different People, and it blew me away, so I listened to a few other songs on the album and I liked everything I heard. So I bought a copy. I didn't even own a CD player yet, I had to listen to it on the family stereo in the living room for 3 months until I got one for Christmas.

Weezer's Blue Album. There were other CDs in the house before then but this was the first one that was mine.
I wasn't much into music and didn't know anything about pop culture -- I was an asocial nerd before it was cool -- but a friend gave me that disc and I played the absolute hell out of it.

I wanna say it was Puff Daddy and the Family/No Way Out and MA$E/Harlem World for Christmas of '97. Also got a portable CD player with the anti-skip technology. That was a very big deal at the time.
When I was about 7, I fell for the 8 CDs for a penny scam and a few weeks later my mom got a bill for $70. All those CDs went back to Columbia House. Crazy thing is we didn't even have a CD player at the time, but 8 CDs > 6 cassettes so I wanted to get more for my money lol
