Sports betting is such a predatory business. Keeps poor people poorer and creates more addicts. I hope Texas stands firm against it, but I fear the money will win congress over like usual.
sealclubberfan@reddit
Isn't this the state of freedums? If people want to gamble, that's their choice.
Swirls109@reddit
Lol say the same thing about medical choices and you will hear a very different response in Texas. What about what you watch in your private and personal time? All state affairs now.

Republicans aren't known for their logic. Murder is already illegal so why did they have to make abortion illegal? That's an admission that abortion isn't murder.
50West@reddit
If you want to follow that logic, why hasn't abortion been banned everywhere?
OhPiggly@reddit
Thanks for making my point.
The reason it's not illegal everywhere is because it's not murder. And it wasn't an "attempted" dig, it is a very real criticism. They know it's not murder - that's why none of the laws that republican states have passed classify abortion as murder. They simply make it so that the doctor can be sued by the state for performing the abortion.
If they were truly convinced that it was murder then they would change the definition of "murder" in their penal codes to include zygotes and fetuses. Unfortunately, those penal codes still require a "person" to be killed to satisfy the definition of a murder and neither a zygote nor a 20 week old fetus satisfy the definition of a person.

Different story when the rich/state can rake in tourism/gambling taxes though. But they've also put aside making money off of legalizing weed. From what I hear Dan Patrick is against both gambling/weed (duh) so that's why they get shut down when introduced to the legislating bodies of Texas.
I'm all for women having their choice and for internet activity not being restricted but those unfortunately don't speak to these assholes number one interest, $$$.

I never gambled much and never put much thought into it until I started following English soccer. My team is sponsored by a shady gambling site. The fan outrage was pretty fierce when the sponsorship deal was signed. I read lots of stories of people's lives being destroyed over it. I'm still torn on it since we let adults make all sorts of bad decisions but not allowing it is in the best interest of society for sure.

Statistics class in college killed gambling for me.

It literally feeds the smallest IQ brains. Because it appears as a “get rich quick” scheme which ultimately never pans out. The house ALWAYS wins
SandMan83000@reddit
Congress doesn’t have the authority. SCOTUS kicked it to the states a few years ago which is why it has proliferated.
The Texas House passed it last session (she says this in the video), but it died in the Senate.
Sixth grade civics folks
Kentopolis@reddit
Texas state congress…
SandMan83000@reddit
The word you are searching for is legislature
Kentopolis@reddit
You know they mean the same thing right?
SandMan83000@reddit
They don’t, actually. Take the L
spacedman_spiff@reddit
They're both bicameral legislative bodies with a strong executive branch. No need to be overly pedantic.
SandMan83000@reddit
Contextually, he thought it was a federal matter. It’s also clear he commented, but didn’t watch the video.
spacedman_spiff@reddit
Well in that case, you weren't pedantic enough.
SandMan83000@reddit
Seems likely!
Kentopolis@reddit
Just Google it dude lol
SandMan83000@reddit
Well, in seventh grade history (if you grew up here), you may have learned about the Congress of the Republic of Texas. But, they haven’t been around for a while.
The state of Texas does not have a body politic referred to as “Congress”.
Kentopolis@reddit
A definition of the word congress is a legislative body… you can refer to any legislature as congress and vice versa. They’re interchangeable.
SandMan83000@reddit
They aren’t. And you didn’t mean that. You commented before watching the video.
I do believe you learned quite a bit today and maybe even will pretend to have learned this at school going forward. Be well.
Kentopolis@reddit
I literally said “I hope Texas stands firm against it.” I don’t know if you can’t read context clues or are being intentionally obtuse but either way, commenting insultingly isn’t a great way to sow discourse.
Historical_Dentonian@reddit
Nepobaby says what?
Specialist_Royal_449@reddit
Oh yeah because they’re not gonna get a kickback from the apps that will be approved for legalized gambling. And when they bring it to Regulatory body they’re gonna present it as a way of keeping the integrity of betting. Texas needs to ban the Powerball and mega millions already bringing in more gambling is going to hurt the working class people who already are in a bad situation.
SandMan83000@reddit
She doesn’t sound “concerned” so much as she’s worried that “bad actors” are taking advantage of the youths (say it like Joe Pesci).
I have a hunch that she thinks the Jones family would be good actors and protect our sacred children, if only we would turn over all gambling revenue to them.
Also, she’s a surprisingly poor public speaker. If you read this Charlotte, take some public speaking lessons!

I think the Jones's wet dream, as part of their Empire, is to have part ownesrhip in a Casino with Sports Betting in the Metroplex. Baby Steps...
HoneyIShrunkMyNads@reddit
At this point just make the Colony "Family Friendly" Vegas tbh. They already have grandscape, the PGA course is close, the universal studios theme park will be close, the airport isn't far.
JMer806@reddit
Cuban and the new owners of the Mavs are trying to get gambling approved so they can build a casino complex on the site of the old Texas Stadium near where 183 and 114 split in Irving.
Agile_Definition_415@reddit
The Sands Corp.
If there's anyone that can get gambling approved in Texas it's them.
JMer806@reddit
It’s funny, the Indian casinos in Oklahoma are pouring money in the Texas legislature to prevent it from happening. It’s like watching a wolf protect you from a different wolf.
FIalt619@reddit
There’s still plenty of undeveloped land right around grandscape. This could be grandscape phase 2.
SandMan83000@reddit
Yup. And for those on the fence that should be a good enough reason to be against it!
Pidder_Paddy@reddit
The least I could do for the natives is gamble away my paycheck in a Res Casino
mariotx10@reddit
Do you think that's why Mark Cuban jumped at that chance and sold, before the Jones' could have a say in how the pie is distributed?

Mark is good Poker Player.

Did you say Utes?

Yeah, Utes.
Pabi_tx@reddit
What's a Ute?
noncongruent@reddit
It's generally a small truck or car with truck-like features, such as a Hilux or Maloo.

Blah blah blah let a man gamble for Christ sake

No no no she’s the Cowboys Co-Owner…didn’t you listen to the reporter?! She also happens to be Jerry Jones’ daughter. /s

Can she fire the GM?

IMO she's the only one of his kids that has enough smarts to get the team back to competing for championships.

As a lions fan(michigan transplant living here), when Martha turned over control to Sheila is when the team turned around. It didn’t just happen suddenly like we got lucky, Sheila made a lot of good hires and gave the team direction. Jerry needs to turn over control to someone else.

I just want my property taxes lower

I think what really concerns the Jones family is that the Adelsons will lock up the Dallas sports book and casino market before they get their own slice of that fat pie. The main reason the Adelsons bought the Mavs from Mark Cuban for $3.5 billion was to bring legalized gambling to Texas.
mariotx10@reddit
Damn, I replied before I saw your comment. You are exactly right in my pov. Mark Cuban jumped at the chance and now it seems like sports gambling does have some serious traction behind it if the Jones' family are out putting hit pieces. It seems Cuban was correct in his trajectory and prediction and the Jones' guessed wrong.

I swear - the 2020's where prostitution is still illegal but we've all but normalized gambling wrecking families while pretending children are less safe than they've ever been when statistically they have never been more safe is one of the most surreal trends of the last 40 years or so.
