Help Rebuilding a Server
Posted by mikolajekj@reddit | sysadmin | View on Reddit | 9 comments
I have an HPe Prolian DL380 Gen9 server that I need to redeploy and need help.
I created a bootable usb with an OS on it.
The system will not boot from it.
I tried to insert the OS ISO in the ILO console. Still no luck.
I try going into Intelligent Provisioning, I can access the area to install an OS. It gives me an error stating that the RAID controller must be disabled for normal system operation.
I look in bios and can’t find where - I find the controller- but no option to disable….
I figure updating the bios and firmware and even the intelligent provisioning software version.
When I go into Intelligent Provisioning, and select update firmware - it just errors out saying it can’t reach HP.com - though it should… just kicks me out after that, no way to manually update….
This server is sure putting up a fight. Anything I am missing?
If I could just get this thing to boot off a thumb drive, I would be 99% there….
Thanks!

It's probably not booting off of USB because it isn't set to boot from USB in the BIOS. Pop into the BIOS (or UEFI I guess) and tell it what to boot from.
You can also confirm your USB is bootable by booting something else from it as well, like a laptop or a workstation.
There are Tech Support forums that may be more suitable than this one however.

This is good advice - thanks. I’m suspecting ILO isn’t helping me. I’ll be researching how to update bios without using intelligent provisioning and Intelligent provisioning software. I’ll be on-site in the morning.

On boot select F10 to chose what to boot from, and select USB
Make sure the USB stick is plugged into one of the USB ports on the back, if you plug it into the ILO usb port it won't work.
Make sure your ISO is valid and bootable, what OS is it?

The OS is Windows Server 2022. When Into the boot menu and select one time boot, I then select to boot from usb, it takes me to system configuration settings page, is select one time boot and it just loops me back to the boot options menu.

Make sure the BIOS is in UEFI mode
Did you download the ISO straight from Microsoft or did you modify it?
What did you use to burn the ISO to the USB stick?

I came here to say make sure the server can support UEFI mode, being a G9 means you maybe on the cusp of HP rolling it out on all servers, maybe look into a bios/firmware update too.

Yeah, I was trying to update firmware through the “Intelligent” Provisioning tool. Not able to- in OP. Are there other ways to update the bios?

The SPP is the USB bootable firmware update tool from HP. Officially you need an active contract to download it from HPE.com
it REQUIRES AN 8GB USB KEY larger isn't supported. The USB key maker tool for it is included in a subfolder on the ISO. You have to use that utility to make it.
