I want to see a BAR in 300 win mag. Surely there's some mad lad out there willing to make it happen.
catonbuckfast@reddit
I'm guessing it would of used the Blish Lock found in the original Thompson
KMjolnir@reddit
It did. It did not work well.
catonbuckfast@reddit
Cool good to know. I didn't think it would work that well.
KMjolnir@reddit
According to a test report read out on tbf YouTube, the 30-06 casings ejected at high enough speed to literally embed themselves into wood nearby. So combination semi-auto rifle and sideways nail gun.
catonbuckfast@reddit
Fuck bet you run the risk of cae rupture as well. I wouldn't want to be standing next to that
MojoCrow@reddit
That’s kind of why it had oil pads in the magazines; Chamber pressure was still high during extraction.
I think 1994 or 1996 Gun Digest had an article about these experimental Thompsons.
KMjolnir@reddit
I wouldn't bet against it. But yeah, it was pulled from the trials pretty quick.
BlindSquirrelENT@reddit
I'll eat my hat it if worked at all.
EvMund@reddit
would have* used
DizzyR06@reddit
I see the FAL somewhere in there
highspeedhooah@reddit
Hahaha if you squint it actually looks like one

Thompson battle rifle and assault rifle, just need a belt-fed Thompson -MG and it now comes full circle
v-infernalis@reddit
Ask, and ye shall receive:
belt (tape) fed thompson
TomShoe@reddit
It's being called "the worst automatic rifle of all time"
HardstuckInUrMom@reddit
Chauchat at home
TomShoe@reddit
Which is saying something, considering the Chauchat is sort of already the Chauchat at home
_Killerwolf_@reddit
What book/magazine is that from?
biddinge@reddit
I want a 30 carbine Thompson in production so badly. Make it modern, make it retro. WE NEED MORE 30 CARBINE RIFLES
Dinglebutterball@reddit
“Glish that bish” some dude to a 30-06 round one day…
beggoh@reddit
Oh man that's wild, never knew a prototype 30-06 Thompson existed. That thing must have kicked like a mule.
The mag had a cartridge oiler? Neat.
That .30 carbine variant looks interesting too.
DarkKnightTazze@reddit
Looks like a BAR, Thompson and a tiny hint of FAL. Seriously what the fuck
hellion213@reddit
I kinda want one just giggles and shits.
MlackBesa@reddit
Seeing a lot of stuff on the 30-06 Thompson lately. Was this sparked by that random video on YouTube showing the only known footage of it? Or if it’s part of the trend, what started it?

Nice try G-man. I'm onto you...
To answer your question, I saw the video posted here and noticed a number of comments asking for more information. So I decided to contribute what little extra info I had to the group
RamTank@reddit
Ian has a video on the .30 carbine version.

In short as theorized by another commenter, with the M3 grease gun up and the military wanting to switch to it the Thompson, production lines were looked at for modification into other roles like an Automatic rifle or carbine as pictured here. I believe I remember the '06 gun beat itself to death and the the 30 carbine variant was seen as being far too heavy, complex and expensive compared to it's svelte and much easier to mass produce counterpart. However it's been a long time since I read that article so take all this with a grain of salt.
