Nice!!
Next time, put a drizzle of fancy mustard on there. You're in France, I'm sure you can find a nice one!
Mustard goes perfectly with sloppy Joe.
doodman76@reddit
It's always nice to see a Frenchman enjoying American food. In culinary school, we learn mostly French techniques, and it's good to see reciprocal appreciation.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Will defo try more recipes in the future.
troublemonkey1@reddit
Try making some biscuits and sausage gravy, it's really delicious and not hard to make
fullanalpanic@reddit
This is a top tier rec. Non-Americans will immediately love it and simultaneously understand why so many of us are overweight.
Sprmodelcitizen@reddit
Pro tip: Next time throw some blue cheese crumbles on the top.
KudosOfTheFroond@reddit
American Cheese and some quality pickle slices
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Blue chesse? Ain't that a bit strong for a Sloppy Joe? I'd defo put cheddar on top
Jerusalemfighter64@reddit
What'd you do diffrent brother this looks like some American slop!
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
I didn't do anything different. Just used French ingredients such as meat from my region (Normandy)
blessedfortherest@reddit
It looks proper, maybe needs some more juices.
Tacomonkie@reddit
But where’s the sloppy?!

It was punched by my grocery bag lmao
Veneboy@reddit
Not messy enough, yet. It looks delicious. Cheese or no cheese on the sloppy j???
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Tried it cheeseless. Next time I'll add cheddar
HospitialHeadache@reddit
Lol, how tf does a Frenchman even know these exist? Was this your first one or are Sloppy Joes a thing in Europe?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
It was my forst sloppy joes. Learned of their existence via some American guys I chatted to
CeeArthur@reddit
Brioche bun? That would be great
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Yes, lightly toasted
oh-lordy-lord@reddit
The only thing about this that makes me think it might be french is the neatness of it.
I'm sure that didn't last long.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Nope lol plate was a mess
bonafacio_rio_rojas@reddit
Forgot pickles and cheese (not fromage, but kraft singles)
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
French pickles are too sour for these kinds of sandwiches. Will defo add cheddar though
TwistedEmily96@reddit
Needs a slice of cheese. Any mild cheese should work as I highly doubt you have access to American cheese slices.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
We surprisingly do! Just not American brands.
Starro_The_Janitor1@reddit

DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)

Feeling_Bathroom9523@reddit
It’s not a bad looking Sloppy Joe. How’d you season the meat?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Salt and garlic powder. I ran out of pepper. Added a but more Dijon mustard though.
CheatsySnoops@reddit
I want one! You got a recipe?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Followed the ingredient list from Allrecipes.com and then eyeballed the ingredients lol
PreferenceContent987@reddit
Would eat. What did you think of them OP?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Absolute delights. Very conforting.
samuraiseoul@reddit
So I gotta ask. Have you been to the USA and had one before? They feel to me like a very basic American household staple that wasn't really exported outside the USA nor really added to restaurant menus or even often talked about so I'm curious how a French person learned of them and craved one I guess? Maybe my view of sloppy joes is wrong and its more well known and less USA-centric than I thought?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
I have never been to the US, might go soon though
I am from Normandy, a region with strong ties to American culture because of WWII. Most of my knowledge comes from the Internet (Reddit, YouTube, Twitter back when it was good, etc...) but I also happen to have studied American culture in college. Plus, French GenX-ers, Millenials and older Gen Z'ers grew up watching American movies/series.
RSA-reddit@reddit
Also, you speak (write) perfectly idiomatic American English, from the comments I've read. I'm envious.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
That is the influence of American movies, my idioms are very Californian. Plus not too far from me there is Deauville and its American movie festival
SparklyPoopcicle@reddit
Any favorite American shows or movies? How about French ones good for an American?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
I absolutely love Cold Case my comfort show.
I don't know any good French series that have English subs/dubs.
samuraiseoul@reddit
Interesting! I didn't think it was that well represented in media. I only know of the scene from Billy Madison! That's really neat! Thanks for sharing!
What kind of things are in an American culture study curriculum?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
In French public universities each teacher has their own "curriculum". They make a class about their main field of study (can be broad or very niche) and encourage students in doing that kind of research on their favourite subject. Being a French university teacher is an autistic person's dream, you get paid for infodumping.
ghoulthebraineater@reddit
That sounds awesome! I just got diagnosed but that is me in a nutshell.
samuraiseoul@reddit
haha that sounds cool! What are some of your favorite things you learned?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
The random Nebraska facts absolutely got me.
samuraiseoul@reddit
What's a Nebraska fact? Haha, I live in Missouri, right below Nebraska and my view of Nebraska is that its not the place where interesting facts come from.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
I had a Nebraskan teacher who was amazing. I forgot part of what she told us but she told us stories about food.

I'm a sucker for that kind of soul-comforting food
NineteenthJester@reddit
I love that kind of food too, recently made Breton beans as one example. What's a good French example of comfort food that you like?
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Crêpes/waffles, bœuf bourguignon, the cordon bleu you buy at the supermarket (Le Gaulois brand, with the bonus magnets that form a map of France), youngsters will grab some McDonald's (French McDonald's is considered one of the best in the world), and tartiflette!
-worryaboutyourself-@reddit
Add dill pickle slices next time!
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
I hate pickles, also French pickles are sour as fuck
Oddity_Odyssey@reddit
It's great with some mayo on the bread and a slice of cheddar cheese melted on the meat. At that point I just eat it with a fork.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Cheddar is amazing. Will defo try
Maynrds@reddit
I like a slice of havarti melted on top of the meat but under the top bun
illegal_miles@reddit
Some cornichons on the side would be perfect.
agoia@reddit
A bit of finely chopped green bell pepper and celery can give it a nice flavor and texture boost.

Hey, man, as an American that looks like a damn good sloppy Joe. And sloppy joes are, by nature, shitt food. But great shitty food. What did you use for ingredients? I'm curious because there's a hundred recipes over here in the US. But what recipe did a French person follow??

alextastic@reddit
Seems legit.
DrFeelOnlyAdequate@reddit
Why is this shitty food porn? That looks exactly like what a sloppy Joe should be and actually pretty good looking.
muffalohat@reddit
People do this all the time, posting food that looks perfectly normal - but not quite good enough to pass on the snobbier food subteddits - just to fish for compliments.
maybe they think we signed up to a comedy subreddit by accident and secretly want to see ordinary food? I don't get it either.
It used to be way more common before some new moderators came in a few months back.
There's an automod message on every thread where you can downvote whenever a poster like this doesn't quite get the point of the subreddit
Grand_Moff_Snarkin@reddit

confusedandworried76@reddit
We used to use our leftover sloppy Joe meat, put it on a bed of Doritos, and drizzle queso over it. We loved it more than Sloppy Joes and just ended up making the meat specifically for that and using the leftovers for sloppy Joes instead of the other way around lol
TommyChongUn@reddit
Dude, ppl just dont make sloppy joes like they used to. I work with kids and one day I made them lunch, and decided to go with sloppy joes cuz it was a hit when I was a kid, and sure enough these kids went crazy for it. Quite a few had never had it before
TheGlennDavid@reddit
My child hates anything tomato based (it's terrible), dislikes any thing spicy, and generally avoids anything with too much flavor.
But sloppy joes (a tomato based sauce with a surprising amount of flavor punch to it)? He once at four of them.
TommyChongUn@reddit
Kids fuckin love it, one of my work kids calls it a spaghetti sandwich lmao
ElizabethDangit@reddit
I haven’t had them in years either. I made Salisbury steak from scratch and it’s delicious.
SteveFrench12@reddit
We make sloppy joes with lentils sometimes and theyre really good. Were not vegans or anything just a lot cheaper than with beef.
CupcakeViking@reddit
It was my birthday last weekend and my mom asked me to choose the family dinner - I picked sloppy Joes (with Fritos, diced green onion, and shredded cheese to top) and it was so goddamn good. I had randomly been craving them for at least a week beforehand. Huge hit with my family and it was easy for mom to make now that she’s a senior. I remember her making mini ones using small dinner rolls for finger food at Christmas.

ProfDangus3000@reddit
I'm not a big fan of turkey, but a Sloppy Tom is the same as a Joe, with ground turkey instead of beef.
It's actually pretty delicious, and usually far cheaper in the US. But, if you can get your hands on ground turkey or chicken, it hits that same craving, but with less heartburn!
rokstedy83@reddit
Are they just Bolognese in a bun ?
ProfDangus3000@reddit
No, it's closer to a mild, sweet and sour barbecue sauce. It's usually got tomato paste / ketchup, tomato sauce, yellow mustard, Worcestershire, brown sugar, and onions, green bell pepper and garlic.
It's just beef mince browned with the veggies, then cooked in the sauce, served on toasty white bread buns. It's a messy meal, but it's one most people raised in the US ate as kids. It's often not made from scratch, but with a can of sauce and a pound of beef.
We also eat pulled pork and brisket sandwiches here, just slow cooked barbecue meat with or without sauce, sometimes with pickles, always on a white bun. Sloppy Joe is like a budget version of that, which you can make in 20 minutes, and not 8 hours.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
Ground turkey defo isn't a thing in France, plus the heartburn is part of the recipe.
Classical_Cafe@reddit
Post a French hotdog or taco here next, people will go crazy for how shitty it looks
genealogical_gunshow@reddit
Good balance of sauce to meat. Could be a little saucier, but if its dripping then you've gone too far. That'll soggy up your bun and you might as well eat it with a spoon.
Good job.

It could be a little bit saucier almost like a bolognese. I wouldn’t go so far to say it’s the driest sloppy Joe ever, though. My experiences with sloppy joes have been using a premade powder mix and I have a feeling most people are the same. If you made homemade sloppy joes it will look different from what is more commonly made here in the states. I’ve made sloppy joes from scratch and they were good but I just love the taste and texture of the premade powder mix from a paper envelope.

I made the sauce sweet and thick, as I like it. Made sure the moisture went in the beef.
Kilgore_T@reddit
And that’s the best part of sloppy joes - you make it the way you like it. People will tell you you’re wrong but you can take pride in the way you joe, unkempt or sloppy.
RunnyDischarge@reddit
It looks really dry. Maybe your camera doesn't pick up moisture.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
It doesn't + lights were shit
thetruegmon@reddit
I don't think it looks even slightly dry. Guy is out to lunch.

Sloppy joes is really easy to make, I'm surprised it hasnt caught on in europe as a way to quickly make cheap burgers at home with just a pan. Add cheese, coleslaw, lettuce, tomato, whatever you want
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
We French people usually like elaborate af meals. Street food is virtually nonexistent.
Thing is I'm a lazy fuck
mustardtruck@reddit
Is the lighting really that high-contrast in France? I thought that was just something they did in films.
DanSkaFloof@reddit (OP)
No, it's nighttime and I used a table lamp
Kilgore_T@reddit
Pretty much nailed it. As someone mentioned earlier it’s not something commonly found in restaurants but many households make it as a cheap comfort food meal. People tend to debate on what the best sloppy joe arrangement is and I believe it’s really based on how it is made/served in their house growing up.
My personal favorite is the McCormick mix with shredded cheese on top with ruffle potato chips piled on top of the meat before pressing the top bun down. The trick is to properly construct the ruffle chip pile so that it evenly breaks without shooting out the side. Again, that’s my favorite because that’s how it was served in my house growing up.

Might add cheese next time! Would be le slop
