Should I wait? Skip this NVIDA gen or buy it when it’s cheap?

Hey there peeps!
I been gearing up to make a new pc and I eyed out most of the parts I want. I was doing some research on the 4000s series of NVIDA gpus and people seem rather disappointed or uninterested with the current gen? I was looking at the 4070 Super in particular.
For context I have an RTX2060 and I’m planning to upgrade for the new Monster Hunter game. Should I wait for a good deal on an 4070 super or just might as well wait for the next gen ?

If you're gonna wait, wait for the AMD 8000 series to see how their Raytracing benchmarks are.. They are supposed to be very promising with the latest gpu's in the PS5 Pro's apparently showing 3 times the performance with RT than previous gen.. You still don't get DLSS but if AMD shows significant RT improvements it's worth considering
If you're in the 70 series range and deadset on Nvidia which is fine I see no reason to wait for the 50 series unless you're hoping for a slight price drop to the 4070 Super which won't really make much of a difference since it's still gonna be relevant
4070 Super is a great card and people's disappointment with Nvidia is NOT with their card quality, it's with their business plan of purposefully memory capping at 12 GB's of VRAM to force future upgrades bc they know they completely own the market share

Nah AMD is bait, don't even consider AMD, even if their Ray tracing improves, their FSR/video encoding/drivers still suck and are like 10 years worth of dev work behind. AMD GPUs are absolute dogshit for everything besides 1080p gaming, definitely not worth saving money for.

Isn't it conflicting to claim that they are great cards on 1440p, yet in the same sentence also claim "IF you don't plan on x and y". That doesn't make it a GREAT card then lol you guys are just sugar coating it. You might also add that it's a AMAZING, GREAT card for 1440p max settings IF you don't plan on playing on a 144hz+ screen AND if you don't plan to use ray tracing AND if you turn off FSR so that your game doesn't look like an acid trip.
You guys keep talking about raytracing and raw performance only, not about the shitty VCE, FSR, power stability, hotspot issues etc that almost all AMD cards share. You guys will end up paying more for an AMD GPU in the long run anyways just from the power draw difference.
Third-party support for AMD stuff is also just 10 years behind, most video editing software fail to effectively make use of AMD's VCE, frame blending and interlacing also sucks. You will also come across a bunch of issues if you try to build a game in UE or Unity as well. You will also come across a bunch of encoding issues when you try to stream (same stuff as video editing).
I've had Nvidia cards for the past 15 years, a few years ago I decided to get a 6900xt because of chip shortage, that's when all these glaring issues became so clear. It was so much more convenient to play and work with an Nvidia GPU and now I can't do half the fun things I could before properly. Obviously, things would improve a lot if everyone bought AMD cards and everyone started developing around AMD cards, but since it's not the case, I don't want to be AMD's testing bunny.

I just bought a 7900 xtx for a good price.
About to build my 2nd PC, the last one was about 2018 and I had an rtx 2070 super mini. I haven't had that PC since 2020, so I'm excited to see the graphical improvement.
I've been reading FSR is improved and now AFMF 2 is decent as well. So hopefully I can enjoy some 4K with it.

That's a sick card, you won't be disappointed. And yeah fsr3 and frame gen have come a long way.
If by any reason you have any issues try to use an older stable driver version perhaps. Nvidia pricing is so bad compared to the competition that I don't see myself buying anything from them for a bit.

That's not true at all though, AMD cards are pretty good at 1440p depending on which you buy. Sure, ray tracing is not as good as Nvidia but other than that, they have good cards. I went from an rx 480 at launch to a 1080ti but that 480 served me well at that time, it was more than capable of doing most games. If you want the most powerful card, then of course, Nvidia is the only choice unfortunately.

Just upgraded from 3060 ti to 4070 super. Bought for $600 new, and I don't regret a thing. It's definitely the best bang for your buck and actually performs better than the 3090, which is crazy when you think about it. Just go for it.

Im a bit scared about „extra features”, which RTX 5000 is gonna have packed in. Things like Future Frame Generation (2) and DLSS 4/5 or higher, which isn’t working on older cards. That was a reason for me to get my 3090, to have better DLSS which is probably a game changer on RTX 5000, if it’s working fine …
I am still thinking about upgrading to 4080 Super, because of Future Frame, which isn’t working without a GitHub plugin on my 3090 and that not even good (ghosting, tearing etc)

Frame generation is kinda an awkward technology, because it improves your frame rate by delaying your current frame, and then comparing it to your next frame, which means you're always a couple frames behind, causing input lag
What you gain from it is percieved smoothness
It's not really worth it necessarily

And this is why i said: Imagine, this kind of (KI) technology is working flawless on RTX5000. No input lags, just extra frames for more stability and over 144FPS in ANY game.

The goal with frame generation is to smooth out frame time fluctuation.
Its a bit more complicated as the tech used by TVs, because games operate with uneven frame pace.
Its a quality feature for games that would otherwise cause visible frame time spikes caused by engine or genre typical limitations that cant be just "optimized" by the game developers.
With REFLEX some games will have a lower latency, with or without frame gen, but in general it just offsets the frame gen latency.
It is best if you dont see this feature in the input lag / performance enhancing category, but see it as a smoothness / quality feature.

For the most part I don't intend to use frame gen. Although Space Engineers cannot render more than 60 real frames a second due to how the engine and physics work. My 6800xt rig sits at like 30% gpu usage. with lossless scaling I used lsfg x2 to get 120 frames of smoothness.I think there technically still is some input latency but I've certainly appreciated the smoothness when the game can't provide that level of smoothness normally. My laptop 3050 struggled to run the game so I appreciate this

for single player games it's pretty great, makes a noticeable difference for me in Cyberpunk and I don't notice the added input lag.
The thing is you need to be around at least 60 fps already for a good experience.

Unless you need it now I’d say wait. At this point you are pay a premium for X amount performance and possibly missing out on new/updated features. For example an 80 tier 4000 series with 80 tier pricing is going to be much closer to 70 tier when 5000 releases or at least based on history, that high end gpu which you paid a premium becomes mid range upon 5000 release. It’s also reasonable to expect 5000 series to have some new or updated features, could be new versions of DLSS, RT or frame gen.

And frankly, most people aren't going to have a use for that level of performance. At those price points it makes no sense to target for game developers for the foreseeable future.
Especially coupled with the VRAM I think it's obvious these cards are being marketed for GPU compute use, not so much gaming.

4070s is a great card. It would be greater if it were cheaper, and that is true of the entire 4000 series. The upgrade from 2060 to 4070s is roughly an additional 150%. Pretty solid improvement. If you wait for the 50 series, you'll probably get slightly more performance. You'll also be waiting a heck of a lot longer as lots of people have been holding off on upgrading since 50 series has "almost" been here for months now.
Look at past sales for 4070 super's, set a price target and some deal alerts. If you find one hit your target price, pick it up and be happy with it. If none go that low and the 5070 launches, you'll be getting more performance (hopefully) at the same price.

2 ways to look at it. Higher up the stack you go the more performance you get and the longer the card will hold up for you. Now the flip side. The further up the stack you go, the more diminishing returns you get. The jump to 4070ti s over 4070s isn't that huge, neither is the jump from that to 4080s and the price has ballooned to $1000usd. Neither are bad, just need to personally weigh the decision yourself.
Also, with a 1660s your cpu might be on the edge of being a good fit for a card that big. You don't want to drop $800+ on a GPU and find out your 5 year old i3 isn't a good match for it!

My current CPU is a Ryzen 7 5700X3D. I had a problem with my old motherboard and had to get a new one, so I decided to get a B550-E ROG Strix and upgrade my CPU (old CPU was a Ryzen 5 3500X), I already had a NZXT Kraken X73 360mm so I was already halfway through the upgrade. But yeah, the pricing might be the biggest factor here, I want a 4080 so I'll be able to play 4K comfortably with 120 FPS, and the 4070 Ti Super has relatively better performance in some games due to the extra VRAM. Worst case scenario I get a 4070s and better case scenario I'll be able to afford a 4080s.

Depends on where you live. In Canada we have a deal website called redflagdeals. I setup a bunch of keywords in it and if someone posts a deal matching one of those keywords I get a notification on my phone about it. If you're in the US there are a bunch of similar deal sites that I'm sure offer similar functionality. You could probably setup a bot to notify you of deals over on r/buildapcsales/

I just got a 30 series card and I am going to stay there for awhile. They perform great and the prices are much better, Maybe the 50 series will be worth it but I doubt it. Games are using more vram now that is the issue I am starting to see. Prices need to deflate and vram needs to be the new issue. For now though 8gb will make it just not in 4k. 1440p is better for me anyways.
Get a 40 series now because a 50 series is going to be even more unreasonably expensive as Nvidia inflates in size.

I have a 4070 Super and it’s a good card. I went with PNY because it was the cheapest option. It runs a tad hotter than some of the other cards but I’m not too concerned. It will be a nice space heater in the colder months.

Same, MH Wilds has got me questioning life as well. I’m hoping to wait out personally. Maybe see how the demo performs, release benchmarks. Also thinking Ng of upgrading my 5600x to the 5700x3d just the squeeze the last bit of performance from my AM4, but not sure if I should do it later (I don’t need it yet) or there’s no point waiting (how long with they be for sale?) since I plan to get it anyway eventually…

I had the same ideas, initially priced a system around a 4070 super. Then I went a bit cheaper on some parts, or found them cheaper, and pushed to a 4080 super. This card is a beast, so if you've got the money for it, I'd just bump up to that.

I'm still skipping this gen.
We don't know if GPU prices will stay at similar levels, or rise, or fall, but the release of new GPUs (5090/80/70 coming in a few weeks) there is usually some changes.
And they are still about 50% to 100% higher than the historical trend line.

Based on the post I take you haven't been paying attention to all the developments in the last several years, so let me get you up to speed.
People are disappointed in NVIDIA, not their cards. The landscape has changed drastically in the last decade with crypto mining, the pandemic messing up with supply/demand, and now with AI chips firing up NVIDIA's brand recognition and stock price. Add inflation to the mix and all these really destroyed the price awareness people had for GPUs. It also made NVIDIA realize that they could charge more for less.
40 series is just the latest pit stop for the NVIDIA greed because they found themselves without competition when AMD couldn't produce a rival to 4090. They even announced a 12GB 4080, which they unlaunched after the backlash. The performance gap between 4080 and 4090 is so huge that it's evident NVIDIA is focusing on selling xx90 at this point. If the rumors are true, then the difference will be even bigger with 50 series, and there are some $2000 - 2500 numbers floating about (4090 MSRP was $1600) .
This means you absolutely shouldn't rely on the pricing of 50 series because chances are they'll be much more expensive than the current gen and won't trigger a price drop in existing stock. On the other hand, AMD may learn from the current gen and push out a great mid-range card at a competitive price, so if you're interested in a 4070-tier card then waiting might actually make sense.

My current build is rocking a GTX 1080. I remember when I bought it there also had the Titan which were definitely more powerful but also overpriced. I view the 4090 as the Titans back then. Not really something most people should pay attention to. The 4080 seems more expensive for the FPS than the 1080 was compared to the 1070 back in the day. I feel like the 4070 super is the closest to what used to be 1080 in terms of positioning.

Don't get AMD, I had like 4-5 different series of Nvidia cards in the past 15 years, then I got a 6900xt and it's the biggest regret of my life. Their drivers, software, frame generation, video encoding and rendering, ray tracing and compatibility with game engines ALLL suck balls.
Get the 4070 ti, don't even think twice man, it draws 100w less, it doesn't heat up as much, doesn't suck as much. All that for like 5 fps less (if not using ray tracing lmao).

If you're looking to upgrade for a specific game, I would have some patience, wait and see what the performance is like on your current hardware. I'd also see what reviewers find in benchmarks.
Since you're buying with one game in mind: the last thing you want is to buy Nvidia but reviewers find it runs better on AMD because it likes more graphics memory - or vice versa if it uses raytracing.
(Although if you wait a little bit, you might also find some good deals when the black Friday sales roll around. And realistically anything from a 7900XT to a 4070S and up is going to be able to run it fine - and if you find a good price then why not.)

2060 Super Performs 20~30% lower than a 1080ti..its closer to a 5700XT. what you have now. be careful with the Ti, Super and variations of low/mid range cards. Nvidia loves to make you think you gotta get the newest one when you could likely go up in performance for fractions of cost than a $700 4070 variant.
but it's your wallet and you know what you are doing with your pc better than any of us.

I won't hesitate to upgrade anymore if prices feel comfortable right now, not after what happened in 2021. Prices never fully recovered from the "chip shortage". A GPU doesn't only process graphics anymore so there are a bunch of factors that could influence the price. The whole stock price explosion and their focus on AI is also very alarming to me. If the price is comfy, just buy it, you might regret it big time in the future. If you upgrade now and 5000 series suddenly releases in a month, you'll just shrug it off, but if it releases and suddenly everything is X5 price and u can't upgrade, you'll hate yourself.

I would lean on the side of saying if you want peace of mind and to have a system ready to go in February, go for the 40 series card you want and be prepared in advance for Monster Hunter.
That way, you have time to do research and purchase everything you want for your build with some breathing room to get it setup and run tests on it with your current library.
I upgraded from a 2080ti to a 4090 / 3800X3D combo back in April 2024 when I made a brand new build, and I'm 100% satisfied with what it does for my demands. 4070 super should be a solid upgrade for Monster Hunter.
If you want to wait and run the risk of getting one of those new 50 series cards, you could stand to get a better gameplay experience if you're patient, but that's somewhat of a gamble because it may not be available by then?

I wouldn't buy a card with 12GB, the 4070 ti super has 16GB which is the minimum you should get these days. When you are spending 4070 super money just spend the little extra for that VRAM, it will give you a few extra years before you need the next upgrade. Might be able to get a good deal on this gen if you wait until the 5000 series.

If Wilds is your main concern, just wait and see what 5000 series does to the market, their reviews and MSRP/market prices. You can afford to wait and make the best decision, imo.
I needed a whole system upgrade (4690k and 980), so i finally pulled the trigger and went in on a 4080. I didn't want the potential chaos of the new release to delay my Wilds experience. Your 2060 will be playable still. My 980 would not (and is barely able to run things like Ghost of Tsushima or Satisfactory)

Speaking from experience, I went from a 2070 to a 4070, and when I day, there's a night and day difference, especially on 1440p from 1080p oh boy... All in all, get a 4000 series card if you have the means to do so as you won't regret it!

I would personally say wait as the benchmarks for the current NVIDIA gpus are good but not great for the price but as I haven’t even ordered my parts yet (I’m thinking AMD) take what I say with a grain of salt
