How to make feet warm in the house?
Posted by blaine12100@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 85 comments
Hi all
As I'm sitting and typing this post, my feet are ice cold. I'm currently wearing an Original Heat holders sock (TOG 2.3) and a heat holders original merino wool sock (TOG 2.9). What else can I do to keep my feet warm.
I have a set of fuzzy lined slipper socks as well but they are too narrow and after wearing both the socks, my feet cannot go inside. Have a fuzzy boot from primark as well. Feet cannot go in as the 2 sock combo makes my feet very thick. Any other options that I should explore? I had genuinely thought that heat holders socks would have been enough.

I have an electric foot warmer. Saves my bacon with Raynaud's. It's just a cheap one from Amazon that had decent reviews, but a game changer. Just don't jump up to answer the door or put the kettle on without taking your feet out first.
QueenSashimi@reddit
Your extremities won't be warm unless your core is. Make sure the rest of you is toasty too! Also worth checking with a medical professional that you don't have any circulatory issues, if you really can't get your feet warm.
sucksblueeggs@reddit
I learnt this from Batman Begins. It’s why gilets work.

Now picturing Bruce Wayne all cosy in a gilet
The_Blip@reddit
Yeah, the trick is to keep your whole body warm and not have shit circulation.

This commend should have more upvotes!

Are they cold all the time or just now? Might want to see a doctor.

Lay a blanket on the floor with a hot water bottle on top, put your feet on the bottle then wrap the blanket up over your feat
paulbamf@reddit
Sometimes you just have to put the heating on.
Acceptable-Art-9649@reddit
This. You need to get the house to 16-18 for at least some of the day (its OK to go below overnight): its not good for the fabric of the building to be cold. Similarly you need to ensure you've got sufficient ventilation and keep moisture down at all costs, this also makes the house easier to heat.
I heat to 18 in most rooms during the day and 19 in the living rooom which is incredibly cheap with our decently insulated house: the boiler just comes on for a short period every few hours. Then if I'm cold I put a jumper, socks and slippers on and if necessary get under an electric blanket which costs next to nothing to run but makes you incredibly toasty.

Paul, can you tell me wife?

Dynamics are wrong here.
Forceptz@reddit
Mate, she's also from the tropics.
It's all wrong.

I have Raynauds, and I've found toe socks keep my feet warmer than "normal" socks. I think it's just because each toe is separated from the next it just helps keep that tiny bit of natural warmth from escaping.
Beyond that my feet need to be warm to begin with, just chucking a pair of slippers on will do fuck all for me
flyingninjaoverhere@reddit
Crocs!
Elegant_Plantain1733@reddit
I put them on my wife.
WingdRat@reddit
I have a mini electric blanket to put over my feet that works wonders, just plugs into the mains

You can also get the same but foot shaped, but I prefer the versatility of a little blanket
elbapo@reddit
Do squats. Excercises largest muscle in the body, raises body temp and circulation. I defy anyone to do 40 squats with fluffy socks on and not be toasty.
Agreeable_Fig_3713@reddit
I’m in Scotland with all tiled or Lino floors. If it’s really cold I’ve got ugg slippers that I stick on for a half hour
seasonaldiamond@reddit
I have a special hot water bottle that has a pouch for feet, you can get them various places, think mine was from Amazon, and I love it. I don’t use it often, but it’s just the job when I need it
Rhyskrispies@reddit
I have some north face thermoball mule slippers. They’re basically a fuzzy lined puffer jacket for your feet. I have to take them off every 40 mins or so to stop my feet sweating, I whole heartedly recommend.
xsorr@reddit
Wear fitted socks and exercise
Freckles93@reddit
Slippers will do a better job than insulated socks, get a pair of boot slippers with a solid sole and padding (can get then on Amazon for £15ish) and that inch or so keeping your feet off the ground will do wonders. Also just size up to get your sock layers on too.

AgingLolita@reddit
Your circulation is poor or your body is cold. Put enough clothes on to make you sweaty, if your feet are still cold, your circulation is poor. If they warm up, your body was cold
Gatodeluna@reddit
I went through a period when my feet were always freezing and nothing warmed them up. Don’t know if it’s practical for you to do, but I would let water hot from the tap run on my feet (tub or shower) until they were bright red (and obvs not hot enough to cause me pain or burn me) and that did work. Of course, there was heat on in the house😉.
beingthehunt@reddit
You mention slipper socks but I find normal slippers as well as thick socks works better for me. Also if you have hard floors maybe get a rug.
grahamssister@reddit
I find that I need my slippers to have a firm/solid base to keep the cold out
upturned-bonce@reddit
Yeah. Marks and Sparks grandad slippers and a pair of woolly socks. Soft soles don't work for shit.
Basic-Pangolin553@reddit
Get the blood circulation going, walk around the block or up and down the stairs a few times
sludgemonkey01@reddit
Go and wash your feet in warm water then dry them properly.
The_Hypnotic_Scot@reddit
Do you smoke? It could be a smoking related circulation issue.
Nine_Eye_Ron@reddit
I’ve got some big thick house socks, then slippers big enough to accommodate those or walking socks! Always buy slippers one size too big!
tokyokween@reddit
I've had a scroll and don't see this suggested anywhere - I have an electric blanket lying on the carpet under my desk and just put my feet on that. Instant warmth. Only downside is that I often have to share space with the cat, who thinks it's hers.
First_Folly@reddit
It might be being caused by poor circulation if heat isn't doing it, especially if your legs get cold as well.
Kawaiikyuto@reddit
Underfloor heating in my new house is the best thing ever!! But yeh, wear real wool socks, quality material makes a huge difference.
Ronsona@reddit
My mum had this issue for years, she tried everything, before she finally fixed it...
Had a pacemaker fitted and sorted her cold hands and feet straight off!
Express-Training5428@reddit
I find that these insulating socks are very insulating (no surprises here). If your feet are cold when you put them on, your feet will stay cold. Try to get your feet warm first...hot water bottle, a bath heated socks etc, before putting them on.
PM-me-your-cuppa-tea@reddit
Yes, sometimes you can over correct? Over think the problem
I’ve got super warm feet right now and I’m wearing a dress, so should be cold. My secret? Cheap, unbreathable primark socks. Similar to uni, I learnt I could take out a warm coat and leave it in the cloakroom or take out my thin polyester blazer that could fit in my bag and wear that home and within minutes I’d be warm due to its heat trapping nature that occurred whenever you moved in it.
J1m1983@reddit
Underfloor heating
lalalaladididi@reddit
How do you go in in mid winter when it's at its coldest?
Amphibious_squirrel@reddit
Warm your feet first then put on your socks. Have a bath or use a hot water bottle. I also highly recommend Costco slippers with the thick sole and sheepskin uppers. They’re similar to Uggs but cheaper.
dth300@reddit
Look for hut slippers/booties. They’re slippers designed for mountain hut and camps, with down or synthetic insulation (think sleeping bags for your feet). You’ll find them in camping/outdoor shops.
You can get heated socks, but I’ve not tried them myself
idontlikemondays321@reddit
Google duvet slippers
dinoduckasaur@reddit
Could you get some reusable hand warmers and stick them inbetween your sock layers or slippers?
Mumfiegirl@reddit
You can buy non reusable foot warmers- I got some for my husband and he loves them
lemon-fizz@reddit
But that is wasteful. Why buy one use items if you can get reusable ones? They are still low cost.
Mumfiegirl@reddit
Because he can’t “reheat” them in work and they stay hotter for much longer
charley_warlzz@reddit
You can get reusable ones that dont need microwaving or anything- the gel ones that you ‘snap’ to make them solidify and release heat.
lemon-fizz@reddit
But OP is asking for advice for ways to keep warm specifically in the house.
makeitrain2020@reddit
Buy these - they’re often on sale: https://rab.equipment/uk/cirrus-hut-boot?queryID=fdf9d3d0025437f709920b78c2da7503&objectID=21402&indexName=rab_live_uk_products
Mountain_Strategy342@reddit
Go upstairs and get some clean socks.
Wash your feet in the coldest water you can stand.
Dry them and put the clean socks on.
In 2 minutes all of you will be toasty warm.
Embarrassed-Load4312@reddit
Dunno if they will appreciate me taking their sock but I'll give it a go.
Mountain_Strategy342@reddit
Aaaaah I apologise. Please give your neighbours my regards, I take full responsibility
Embarrassed-Load4312@reddit
They were surprisingly ok with it.
Mountain_Strategy342@reddit
Lol
Mountain_Strategy342@reddit
All that "running away from the neighbours whilst wearing stolen socks" should have warmed you up a bit....
Massive-small-thing@reddit
Go for a walk. It's the warm blood from the body that heats the feet
DarthScabies@reddit
Wiggle your toes.
BenitoBro@reddit
Hot water bottle on the floor? I do it when I'm sat at my PC
NaniFarRoad@reddit
Are your feet on the ground? Move them up onto a stool/couch/thick rug.
If I have been sitting at a desk for a few hours working/gaming, I always try wrapping my legs in a fleece blanket before I start whining about cold feet.
Or borrow someone's dog, use as footwarmer.
Peejayess3309@reddit
You only mention the socks - is the floor carpeted or wood/laminate? Is the floor underneath concrete? How about draughts coming under the door and blowing Roy d your feet? Consider things that are putting your feet in a cold zone, meaning there’s less heat for your socks to retain. Worst case you could have a circulation problem reducing blood flow to the extremities. If you’re having the trouble you say in keeping your feet warm perhaps you should get it checked out with your doctor.
OddFunny2674@reddit
I wear £8 slipper socks from Sainsbury's.
Fellattio_Nelson@reddit
Put a hat on.
Orrery-@reddit
I WFH with an electric blanket over my lap. I sometimes sit crossed legged and tucked my feet under the blanket
Abladam89@reddit
If your socks are too tight you might be restricting blood flow making them feel cold
CuriousCarrot24@reddit
Put the heating on man jesus
Oohtobeagoona@reddit
I use heated flooring in my dreams
ajh489@reddit
This will sound like a joke but...do some star jumps every now and again. It gets the blood pumping quickly.
Forceptz@reddit
You're just keeping your feelings cold with all that on. Take it off. Oddly, my feet are warm wearing open toe sliders.
barrybreslau@reddit
Wear some proper socks. I'm a big fan of the Danish Endurance poly-wool blend "hiking" socks. Marks and Spencer's do prime black merino socks that are also nice, but less durable.
usuallydramatic@reddit
You can get slippers with microwaveable pouches
verykindzebra@reddit
It's not about your feet, you have to make sure your whole body is warm. Get an Oodie/electric blanket etc, move around a bit, you should be good.
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
The socks act to hold your natural heat in but if you have poor circulation, then no heat to hold in. You can get electric feet warmers or you can use the old traditional one - get a clean brick, shove in oven when cooking, wrap in pillow case and rest feet on. For the fancy version, have one of these at the desk and recommend - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/186702157189 And ceramic insole a brick maker made as a gimmick.
Though the modern equivalent looks good too - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Electric-Heatable-Infrared-Washable-reusable
dibblah@reddit
Wiggle your toes. I have raynauds and my feet get icy cold. I have learnt to keep fidgeting. Compression socks help as well to keep your circulation going.
You can also get microwavable slippers. They are uncomfortable to walk in but nice for sitting around in.
marxistopportunist@reddit
You need proper shearling not thin socks.
A slipper with leather sole and stuffed with thick wool
-Rhymenocerous-@reddit
Scratch them until it burns with pain.
Its free
RG0195@reddit
I'm being serious when I say this, but just walking around will help so much - it gets the blood flowing around your feet!
MrNippyNippy@reddit
If you’re sure this is not a medical issue have you looked at heated socks?
You can find them on Amazon etc.
tmstms@reddit
I wear 'heat holder' branded socks too, outside of which I wear a pair of fleece things that are sold as being liners for wellies. Layering is all!
Electricbell20@reddit
Laptop power brick keeps mine toasty in the winter.
nathderbyshire@reddit
I always have a blanket around me with my feet tucked in at the bottom and I'll shove a hot water bottle in there if needs be. I also get extremely cold feet, I'll stand in the shower and rinse them with warm water for a few minutes, or a foot bath with the mop bucket then hairdry them and again tuck in with a hot water bottle.
D34TH2@reddit
Sit with your feet on a hot water bottle while both are wrapped in a blanket.
amboandy@reddit
Make a hot water bottle, place on feet until warm, swap bottle position to other parts of your anatomy that feel cold.
