Did he miss or did it really take 5 shots to take the perp down?

I think people grossly underestimate how bad pistols are at stopping people. If you don’t hit CNS they can keep coming for more than long enough to cause serious of fatal damage. Even hitting a major artery to include a hit to the heart means they can fight on for 10-15 seconds per the FBI writings SOURCE. The answer is to get more cracks as hitting something that will stop them immediately.
I also think people overestimate the differences between pistol caliber performance. They are all roughly the same, only wounding within their path with no bonus for “energy”. The 357mag is no more effective than a 9mm in providing a physical stop. There is an ever so slight advantage in terminal performance by a 45AARP (and to a lesser degree 10mm) just by being slightly wider, but this is minimal and not worth the shootability penalty. Larger calibers than 9mm mean you are slower to get the next shot on target and more holes trumps slightly bigger ones.
There will be a lot of argument about why 10mm especially is the chosen caliber and 9mm is insufficient. But they will all come in the form of misinterpreting YouTube gel test videos or tall tales from someone’s wife’s boyfriend’s uncle who used to be a cop or some other nonsense.
WizardMelcar@reddit
People misunderstand the “stopping power” of rifles. Because s”stopping power” isn’t a thing.
I deer hunt, same rifle same cartridges at ~100 yards. Hit a deer though the heart. It drops in its tracks. Kicks. Little & is done.
Miss that heart by 2 inches, and you track it for an hour.
Rifles used is a savage110 30-06.
I’ve experienced this with both traditional cup & core & solid copper TTSX.
Shit placement is king. Forget stopping power. It doesn’t exist. (Caveat - your round has enough energy to reach the vitals.)
CocknBalls_69@reddit
I agree, shit placement is king
WizardMelcar@reddit
lol gotta love autocorrect.
bronzecat11@reddit
Good info. More people need to consider this and stop the caliber wars.
fredgiblet@reddit
Ammo is cheap, lives are expensive, anything worth shooting is worth shooting twice.
CocknBalls_69@reddit
If you don’t get a CNS hit or a massive blood pressure drop they’re not going down
mgmorden@reddit
Original video comments on Youtube said that the assailant was struck 3 times in the chest.
Shootist00@reddit
He missed. Assailant was to close and slashing with the knife as the officer tried to get away and shoot. Once there was space between the assailant and the officer he made a good shot.
My problem is he should of shot as the assailant moved towards him. He waited until the assailant was on top of him.
KStang086@reddit
I mean. He probably didnt want to take a life unless he had to.
More-Psychology1827@reddit
After watching videos like this , I’ve switched from 9mm to 10mm for my CCW.
DeafHeretic@reddit
Bullet placement is a LOT more important than caliber/power/etc.
9x19 is only one MM smaller than .40/10mm and in general penetrates as deeply as .40/10mm
9x19 is also easier to place multiple rounds faster than 10mm. I shoot both 9mm & .40 in my SIG 226s, and find .40 is only slight slower than 9x19, but with my 227s (.45 ACP - about the same "power" as a 10mm) my speed slows down noticeably to keep the same accuracy. Also, the same mags (extended) in my 226, have five more rounds for 9mm than they do for .40 S&W.
DontBelieveTheirHype@reddit
This is slightly misleading, as hot 10MM loads produce significantly higher joules than 9Mm/.40
DeafHeretic@reddit
I occasionally shoot .45 ACP in SIG 227s with 14rd mags. I have std loads, +P and +P+ loads.
I don't see much reason for those energy levels for humans. I would use the heavy for caliber loads (e.g., Underwood 255gr hardcast) for large brown bears (which we don't have in Oregon, but might encounter in N. WA, MT, WY, CO, etc. - where I travel infrequently). But I do not feel under-gunned with a SIG 365 with 12+1 GDHP 124 gr.
As I said in another post here, placement is more important than caliber/etc.
If anything, I think the LEO waited too long to shoot the attacker. Not sure if she got him with the first swipes of the knife, but at that point I wouldn't have hesitated to start defending myself.
gagz118@reddit
She slashed the hell out of his face.
603rdMtnDivision@reddit
It's been deleted so I didn't see anything but sometimes it can take multiple rounds to bring someone down because of adrenaline dumps. There's a video where a guy is walking towards this cop and he gets shot several times in the chest point blank and just tanks them and keeps walking a few more feet and then collapses.

I think I know which video you’re talking about. And it’s wild. I read somewhere on the internet that he wasn’t on any drugs or anything, just got in a crash and knocked his noggin pretty bad
603rdMtnDivision@reddit
I think they were in the midst of mental health issues too so they were just unraveling right then and there.
CHL9@reddit
This was a girl who was a former college basketball player , obviously in midst of psychotic break, some “mental health professional” called the cops so they would do a wellness check on her, she opened the door slashed the cop Peter Lou in the face, then pursued him with the knife to a dead end. Unclear how many shots hit, there were several torso/pelvis shots following which she fell
Defnotabotok@reddit
I remember that. I think he was hitting the cop with a tree limb? He had this insane look on his face and looked like he wouldn’t go down, until he did. He was just soaking those rounds up.
Palehorse67@reddit
Yep, I think that guy tanked something like 12 shots to the chest before he finally went down.
Shmorrior@reddit
This video, I'm guessing.
603rdMtnDivision@reddit
Yep!
Agammamon@reddit
There's another one where a dude is trying to rob a liquor store, the clerk dumps a few rounds in him, he leave, *COMES BACK IN* and takes a few more.
Raphy000@reddit (OP)
Strange, the video still shows for me on X
Proof_Bathroom_3902@reddit
Was this that woman in Reston Virginia with the knife? She was crazy as a shithouse rat plus bigger and heavier than the officer. Virginia required officers to get training for dealing non violently with mental people, and he let her get way too close, having already slashed him in the face with the knife.
It's not like Hollywood. Humans are durable creatures. The only real one-shot stop is the CNS region. Spine and brain. You can be shot through the heart and still have nearly half a minute of action. He hit her three times while bleeding from a head wound and trying to retreat and de-escalate according to his training. He's lucky he got out as well as he did.
Jordan_1424@reddit
Also the pelvis. Shatter the pelvis and even on PCP they aren't moving because their body physically can't anymore.
edventure_2025@reddit
Just remember, you can't put a tourniquet on a taint.
Jordan_1424@reddit
Qwik clot on the other hand.....would hurt really really bad.
oh_three_dum_dum@reddit
Pelvic shots do 100% kill mobility, BUT…if a person has a gun instead of a knife you may need to shoot again since they would still have use of their hands. Just something to consider.
Jordan_1424@reddit
For sure. Hands kill.
I'm just saying if you need to absolutely stop forward momentum the pelvis does that. It is a larger easier to hit target than the central nervous system and usually there is no armor coverage on the area.
oh_three_dum_dum@reddit
For sure.
Zesty-Lem0n@reddit
Mobility kill, aim for the treads lol
ceapaire@reddit
To expound on the second point, That's primarily true for pistol rounds, and why most people are switching to 9mm back from 45 and .40 pistols. Rifle rounds (and some non-conventional pistol rounds) have enough energy in them to have substantial temporary cavities that can cause enough shock to shut someone/something down without scoring a direct CNS hit.
Now this isn't a guarantee that one, or even a few rifle rounds, will have this effect. Especially with the trend of having PDW type weapons, where the barrel lengths are short enough to substantially effect velocity/energy, so you always shoot until you're sure the threat is stopped. But it is enough of a difference that we've seen police departments move away from PCCs and to intermediate caliber carbines for similar roles.
monty845@reddit
Its also why you have all sorts of niche larger rounds designed for stopping power at short range, and particularly to work for a shorter barrel rifle. If 5.56mm was perfect at stopping threats, we wouldn't have had attempts to fix it with things like .458 Socom. Still end up with 5.56mm since it has a lot of practical advantages, and failure to stop isn't that common. But it is still very much a thing. Even more so with military ammo that isn't hollow point.
gwhh@reddit
Yes. It was Virginia.
ThurmanMurman907@reddit
he also got backed up in a dead end which exacerbated the issue when she started attacking
BingBongthe2nd@reddit
Hold this receipt. The officer is lucky to be alive. Show this to ACAB radicals next time there's a shooting.
Standard police academy use of force doctrine hammers home the 21 foot rule. If someone is within that range with a weapon, you're probably fucked even if you have a good draw.
He would have been well justified to lay down fire as soon as he created space and turned to the threat and gave one command to drop the knife.
WiscoCubFan23@reddit
Yes. Shot placement is key. Blood loss is not immediate.
AM-64@reddit
It can definitely take a lot more than 5 rounds to down a person especially if they are on something and the bullets don't connect with stuff that helps shut them down.
turtle_with_dentures@reddit
My favorite video to reference when people talk about "why did they shoot so many times" is this donut operator video. ^^*Kinda ^^long, ^^but ^^worth ^^the ^^4min ^^watch.

Let be more specific. I want to be able to see the light in the blumpkin’s eyes fade to black but I guess it’s a big ask nowadays.
Anyways, RIP Bozo to Kool-Aid man for trying to gut that poor dude. You can tell he’s in shock and scared as fuck after the fight ended. Even worse, every other first responder is more worried about saving the sinking ship in the hallway than giving PFC some proper medical attention. Takes nearly 10 mins from the officer needs help comms to when they actually start working on him.
Agammamon@reddit
If you don't hit heart/CNS then yes, it takes a few shots to bring someone down.
SmoothSlavperator@reddit
Ever been hunting and seen how long a deer can run after you liquify its entire chest cavity with a rifle?
Well handguns don't achieve the cavitation velocity that rifles do so the stopping priocess takes even longer.
The only thing that causes and immediate stop is a CNS strike. Outside of that you're waiting for tissue to deoxygenate before they stop.
So you try to put as many holes in your opponent as you can to speed up the exsanguination or get a CNS strike.
atsinged@reddit
Given her size and state of mind, I'm kind of surprised 3 stopped her like it did.
Deeschuck@reddit
What's fucked up (well, a lot of things, but also this) is that Dapper Detective, the X poster who bills himself as an "Expert Violent Crimes Detective" is claiming this woman, Sydney Wilson, is trans when she's a well-known women's college basketball player.
Seems like Ol' Dapper Dan needs to brush up on his wiener-detecting skills because he's seeing things that ain't there.
farmkid71@reddit
He got slashed in the face with a knife at least once. That's not going to help with aim.
fumfer1@reddit
It takes as many as it takes.
citizenscienceM@reddit
I thought it was like 3 rounds but ai could be mistaken, either way like the other guy said adrenaline dumps will keep you going through some crazy shit, or if they were on some crazy uppers or PCP or some shit can REALLY keep you going for a little bit l, whatever that last round hit seemed like a doozy though, maybe a lung or the heart or something, they stopped pretty quick after the last one. It's unfortunate that they didn't just stop, they really had a chance there to not continue with what they were doing. You can tell the guy really didn't want to have to do that.

Definitely was something going on there. She busted out like the kool aid man with that! "Oohhhh yeah, ohhh yeah"
