Pretty accurate though. When people say that traveling gives you a new perspective on the world, they mean that you should go to a third world shithole - because when you come back, it's like being born anew. The air is fresh, the streets are clean, the rotting garbage is in the sewer, and the police hassle only the correct people.
It means travel and see how different cultures and people are, and realize how wide and wonderful the world is and how the things we think we know are really just our way of living.
But personally I just travel to a resort where I sip mango juice and unerve other hotel guests with my tattoos and disgusting scars.
And that is the primary reason why globalization should be so problematic to everyone, regardless of political affiliation. By melding all cultures together, each one is reduced to a mere echo of it what it really was. Don't believe me? Just go to a Powwow sometime and see what all tradition and culture will be reduced to if this course continues.
Holding on to old cultures is just holding on to outdated shit for the stake of nostalgia. New cultures develop you know. There's nothing about traditional mask dancing that's actually worse or better than tik tok dancing. It is new culture even if you think it sucks.
I often feel like I don't really belong to any specific culture, and I've heard many from my country (Latvia) say the same. We're a very new country with basically no unique traditions or anything, except language. If I had to choose which popular culture I can associate myself with the most, shit you not I'd say 'MERICA. The main stuff on radios and TVs has mostly been from US too, so there's that.
Powwow and Native American culture decaying isn’t due to globalism specifically, but the fact that their societies had been destroyed a couple centuries prior by European colonists.
The world is completely connected through the internet like never before. Cultures are going to merge because of this, inevitably. It will be no different from ancient cultures merging, turning into new current cultures. People in North America do not have the same cultures as people in North America did from 1000 years ago. Is that bad? Or are we more evolved?

It is very bad, yes. It's one thing to be aware of a culture, quite another to influence and dilute it. 1000 years ago, cultures could change, even get eliminated, a new one would pop up to replace it. That's not what is happening now. Don't think five or ten years in the future. Think two hundred. At the rate we're going, every place on earth will be cookie cutter and indistinguishable from the next in terms of people, architecture, art, food . . . all of it. There won't be traditional Japanese dishes, it will be whatever version of sushi the masses agree on and whatever is cheapest to make and market. We can "evolve" without throwing out all of the features that make cultures unique. But that's not the path we are on. Is that really the future anyone wants, if they really envision the world progressing to this logical conclusion?
That doesn't even make any sense unless you believe centuries of history and geography itself can be erased along with it. Even if every country on the planet formed a one world government or whatever, different parts of the world would remain different from each other in very significant ways.
Personally, I'd like it if people could actually work together on such a grand scale.
No, they won't remain different. That's wishful thinking, thanks to Science Fiction showing people of all different cultures living in some technological city while maintaining their identity and traditions. That's the future you're imagining, but that is not what will happen. Close your eyes and picture Paris and Tokyo in two hundred years or even five hundred. Do you really see the architecture, people, language, and food still being distinct from one another? Its a lovely thought, but not agreeable with reality. I agree with you, the future we want is maintaining cultural identity while working together on larger goals that benefit the world. But that's not what we're getting, not now. And I don't think we could alter course if we wanted to. That train has left the station.
How do you not see them being distinct? Those are two entirely different parts of the world with entirely different histories and geography, and you think that, given a few centuries, all of that will mean nothing "muh globalism" or something. That's comical. Culture is more interesting than that.
It is if you go to non-rich countries. I went to Costa Rica which isn't that poor and while the scenery was beautiful the thing that I'll always remember are the kids digging through literal trash for food because nobody can afford food except the expats.
Some exotic places have cool traditions and stuff but that's not necessarily representative of how life is as the day-to-day is pretty much the same everywhere. It'd be like a foreigner coming to the US on the 4th and thinking fireworks are a big part of American culture.
I'm just saying a lot of people think traveling will suddenly make you worldly and sophisticated because that's what everyone expects. At least you're being honest and calling it what it is—a vacation where you can sit back and enjoy yourself—although I find people get upset when you call it that.
I don't even need to travel to third world country for this experience, I get this feeling every time I leave the city and experience rural areas of my own country.
My city certainly has some rough spots, mostly in and around run down industrial areas, but nothing that could be considered to be slum. Gypsy slums are most of the time isolated settlements outside of cities, at least here in western part of the country. Now those places are truly horrid.
r, and the police hassle only ~~the correct~~ Poor people.

In pretty much every poor country you can get out of a crime by having a 100$USD bill in your passport when you hand it to the cop. And if it doesn't work, they will offer to let you go if you pay up at pretty much every step of the process.
I wish. In Europe most police officers don't have the balls to go after g*psies and all the engineers and doctors fleeing wars; they turn a blind eye on them and turn around to look for a white guy to fine to meet their fine budget because they know whites won't react violently.

Go on a walk buddy, travel to any of the most hyped tourist destinations in the world that's just a few hours drive away. Heck, you have the luxury to travel to almost anywhere in the world without any visa or paperwork.
I'm Mexican and you need a visa for some countries ( mostly in Africa and countries that don't let anyone without a visa like china)
The only developed countries afaik that don't let you in without a visa are Australia, Canada and the us ofc
Which I find odd because we don't have high rates of illegal immigration to Australia but whatever
The point is that Europe discriminates against citizens of poorer countries and I can't imagine going through the painful process of getting a visa for all of those countries
Because america has,the statue of liberty, Disneyland, Hollywood
so I see why someone would bother to be treated like shit by immigration and customs agents
Living in an emerging countries gets the worst of both worlds, I have enough to think and get depressed, but not enough to be living a first world dream.
Can speak from first hand experience: Lived in perfect luxury and safety with no need to work or go make money. It was the most miserable and alone I’d ever been. Yes, having money helps with issues but if at your core you’re alone, depressed, and without human relationships? Nothing really matters.
We in the west (at least in North America, I can’t speak for Europe) have a seriously cold, unforgiving, and honestly just uncaring society. I can’t help but feel until we reject the materialist view that our oligarchs have forced on us we’ll never really recover as a culture.
Everything will continue the same of filling the empty voids of loneliness with sex, drugs, food, and time wastes. All the while we’ll tell anyone who disagrees with us that their way of life is controlling and abusive. The best way is our way. Cold, emotionless, and meaningless. But our oligarchs and upper class have lots of money :)
I’ve considered it and have been trying but it doesn’t change the society issues and cultural rot that the average poor person deals with in Canada :) I’m glad things are good enough for you that you get to ignore it all though :)
If such a house and job is not available in your country, then try another one. English teachers in international schools here routinely earn over 100k a year in local terms. The houses are not expensive outside of city areas, and your US dollar goes a long way due to the exchange rate. Unless you just want to complain about your situation, in which case keep on complaining! I mean, the migrants have no problem going to your country. You can do the same too.
When you don't the basic problems bothering you, like food and shelter, other problems surface. Indianon has no idea how the human brain works.
Indianon has never felt that emptiness, that void where you have all the necessities of life and yet you feel unfulfilled and desolate and then you feel like shit for feeling that way because there's people out there living on the streets and going to bed on an empty stomach.
Perhaps, Indianon should acknowledge that all sorts of problems exist and invalidating someone else's misery won't make his any better or worse.
Being poor and depressed is great because you can blame everything on the lack of money. Suddenly having a lot of money and still being depressed sucks because it means you have nothing to blame but yourself.
Which is still your fault anyway. Depression is a myth propagated by our overlord to make us soy and feeble. Poverty in India is their fault. Worshipping their fake ass transformers-looking gods instead of building a road or acting like a normal being.
If you think having basic survival needs met is some kind of unattainable boon that only the most privileged humans may enjoy you should probably stop fucking around on the internet and start working towards bringing your society out of the stone age.
wasn't there experimence for rats back in the 60s or something?
The scientists would put female and male rats inside a box with everything provided from food to entertainment, after a while they notice they just got depressed and refused to eat or something
Either you live in a terrible place where you always have purpose i.e. survive the next day find your next meal and develop some severe PTSD and decreased connection between amygdala and other parts of brain.
Or you live in a good place where your biggest problem is usually avoiding boredom or trying to succeed more than average but you have no purpose for your brain that evolved to avoid lions, snakes and hunt mammoths so you get depression.
That’s why you mortgage your house to play online poker against pros at nosebleed stakes. The challenge is real and the threat of homelessness is real.
The only reason we are allowed those things in the first world is because it benefits our overlords to improve the overall standard of life. If the country you live in does not have what the first world considers to be basic amenities, that is because the dictators running your country benefit more from denying you those things.
If you live in a mud hut, you ain't got nothing for them to take. But if you have gainful employment, you have more money for your overlords to tax, they can charge you way more for food and shelter, and shove way more mediocre entertainment down your throat. Whether or not you have healthcare (regardless of pricing) is dependent on whether or not your government thinks its drones are valuable enough individually to invest in saving when they fall ill.
This reminds me of that one that had screenshots of Fight Club, Office Space, and a couple other movies that said "AAARRGG I HAVE A STABLE JOB AND A NICE HOUSE IM GOING CRAZY"
Yeah, you also realise that to keep your position as one of the poorest in your country (but still one of the top 20% globally), you have have to work your arse off, otherwise third world immigrant with the work ethic of an entire Victorian workhouse will steal your place and you'll be a homeless NEET

It's not what you say that matters, it's how much damage it does.

The first troll won't be punished but the second troll would get the book thrown at them.

I'm depressed because the Indians are here too.
April_Fabb@reddit
Being poor and depressed is great because you can blame everything on the lack of money. Suddenly having a lot of money and still being depressed sucks because it means you have nothing to blame but yourself.
AutoJannietator@reddit
No, you can still blame Jews

Which is still your fault anyway. Depression is a myth propagated by our overlord to make us soy and feeble. Poverty in India is their fault. Worshipping their fake ass transformers-looking gods instead of building a road or acting like a normal being.

If you think having basic survival needs met is some kind of unattainable boon that only the most privileged humans may enjoy you should probably stop fucking around on the internet and start working towards bringing your society out of the stone age.

Sounds like a skill issue. Which is quite ironic coming from a German.
GaniMemestar@reddit
wasn't there experimence for rats back in the 60s or something?
The scientists would put female and male rats inside a box with everything provided from food to entertainment, after a while they notice they just got depressed and refused to eat or something
CordobezEverdeen@reddit
The experiment was riddled with holes, mistakes and has been severely criticized to hell and back.
It's a 4 funsies experiment at best.

Either you live in a terrible place where you always have purpose i.e. survive the next day find your next meal and develop some severe PTSD and decreased connection between amygdala and other parts of brain.
Or you live in a good place where your biggest problem is usually avoiding boredom or trying to succeed more than average but you have no purpose for your brain that evolved to avoid lions, snakes and hunt mammoths so you get depression.
djaqk@reddit
Placate the hunter brain with competitive/hard vidya, just the way she goes boys, way she goes...

Maslow hierarchy of needs.
You can be depressed no matter how good your life is compared to others.
We are so deeply programmed to constantly get better, improve ourselves, get more money, bigger house and so on.
Constantly wanting more leads ultimately to being depressed all the time for missing stuff that isn't really that necessary.
We sometimes need to revaluate what we have and what we have achieved.
Mama_Mega@reddit

That's why we have the expression "first world problems".
The only reason more Americans don't suffer from them is because the USA has been sliding to "third world nation" on some aspects for some time now.
TheAskald@reddit
Anon is unaware that this is only in the lower part of the the pyramid of priorities in life
Single-Bad-5951@reddit
Yeah, you also realise that to keep your position as one of the poorest in your country (but still one of the top 20% globally), you have have to work your arse off, otherwise third world immigrant with the work ethic of an entire Victorian workhouse will steal your place and you'll be a homeless NEET
bottledry@reddit
take a month off sick once a year and maybe your income will drop below the poverty threshold to make you eligible for state bennies
