PSA still gets little blame, more like. You should’ve done your homework trouble. They should’ve seen early signs of trouble with HMG, and not had their heads in the clouds.
It’s a bit more complex than that it’s not entirely their fault. This is NOT there project is the HMG STG44, which has been to 3 shops and never finished. My guess is HMG lied about how “almost ready it was” and PSA is eating it now. They need to just make there own replica and tell HMG to get fucked
I feel bad for everyone that has wildly different experiences with PSA. I love their company mission statement, hate their wild QC. PSA has been nothing but (No pun intended) bulletproof for me. 2,000 rounds of steel, brass, everything including the kitchen sink through my dagger, my BCG and Dissy upper has had 1,500 rounds with only 1 issue, and that 1 issue was dumb ass.
You would expect to be able to at least somewhat zero an optic. Not possible in my case when the gun shoots so far left you can't adjust anything to impact. Not even the mbus it came with. But it shoots bullets. That's cool.
The issue is that the bullet does not go where the barrel is pointing. My scope has 40 moa adjustment in all directions. I have the reticle as far left as I possibly can, and I still have to use mental gymnastics and hold father than that at every distance. Point of aim point of impact is not possible scope or mbus. It is consistent enough for me to hit a target, eventually, but I've given up on grouping anything. When I got the upper and kit, the handguard was visibly crooked on the barrel so I sent it back. Psa said it was an out of spec barrel extension, which they replaced. The handguard now looks more in line with the barrel but it still shoots left past any optic I've tried.
I don't pay much attention to domestic AKs but it wouldn't surprise me, if PSA's AKs are as bad as you say just imagine how truly bad the STG-44 must've been for them to abandon it.
Their 5.56 and 5.45 AK lines suffer early trunnion and bolt deformations due to incorrect geometry between the two and they don't resolve it, they just have dudes send their guns back. It took them FIVE generations of 7.62 AKs before they figured out how to make it not total dogshit, and they used their customers as the beta tester for years
I don't own anything PSA so I don't have a dog in this fight but the few videos I've seen of PSA AKs showed they were at the least functional as opposed to the $3500 T7 I was vaguely referring to, either way videos can definitely be deceiving as I'm sure there's folks out there with 100% functioning T7s and others with 100% non functioning PSA AKs.
There simply isn't enough demand to justify the expensive tooling needed for a very niche product. SSD does produce very accurate and high quality STG's in different variants (they make Mkb 42's, MP-43 and 44's), but they're pricey and produced in low quantities because there just isn't much demand to actually scale up production where they become cheap.
Because the significant time and money investment required to successfully reverse engineer it (as well as other weapons people want reproductions of) will always result in a product that’s so expensive that it’s not viable on the market for a large manufacturer like PSA.
Best case scenario they’d wind up with a gun that they can squeeze out at $2k+. The problem is that it’s purely a novelty gun for enthusiasts, and that market isn’t big enough to actually make it worthwhile.
Look at SMG’s FG42 reproductions. In that case, you have a gun that costs $7,000+ and takes 2+ years on the waitlist to even get. That’s something that only the most dedicated hobbyists are gonna buy. It would never work for a manufacturer like PSA.
I can't wait to see how many system dittrich BD44's and other BD series of rifles make it into the states in the coming years. They have a modernized fg42 in different calibers on there website and it looks absolutely wicked.
Will take time to distribute but SSD has already set up shop in the US.
Problem is that they're still very pricey, although that is very expected from a purely novelty product for collectors who don't have 40+k to spend on a real STG.
They absolutely are bitching. The problem is that they’re only viable at that small boutique scale, with a very niche customer base. They’re not viable for a manufacturer to make them sub-$1000 for mass sale.
Add in the inevitable teething problems (looks at the t7 release) the only people willing to stay along for the ride after all that would be very small compared to the investment a company has to invest for that product.
Unfortunately the "normie" gunowner would pass on it because it's not an AR is expensive and probably proprietary mags. I've run into a several people that want something rare like that, and usually the initial cost followed by the price of anything for it is the biggest turn off to them.
My guess is because the STG-44 is a gun that isn't all that easy to produce at high volume with modern tooling. Same reason American AK's tend to either be top notch rifles or they are complete shit, and the prices reflect that. If you don't spend the coin for a nice one, you're getting a shitty one.
The machinery needed to make these rifles en masse is big and expensive. State-owned factories were the only way to do it back in the day. If you don't have all that machinery, you end up having to do lots of machining and hand fitting and it drives the price way up.
The receiver on an STG-44 is basically a big stamping. While sheet metal is cheap, the machines to make sheet metal into receivers is not.
Yes, but the lower is half the gun. They're greatly simplifying things by just doing an upper.
I kinda had a feeling it would eventually come to this, but the Stg-44 being shelved really, really depresses me.
It feels like all variety is gone from the semi-auto market. Shot shot every year is a bunch of "new" products that are basically just a bunch of AR variants.
Don't get me wrong AR's are great, but everybody who wants one has 1 or 2 (or 17) already.
I think the main issue is the initial H&M project was always overambitious. 7.62x39, .300 Blackout and 5.56 at the same time? That was always going to be tricky. I mean shit, 7.62x39 ARs still have a bad reputation (and part of why .300 Blackout even exists) and that had a lot more R&D and attempts made.
Should've just stuck with making an Stg-44 clone that takes 7.62x39 only. That would allow someone to shoot an Stg-44 relatively economically.
Oh well, if you have a ton of money, you can get the truly faithful DK Productions repros, like the BD-44 and such. But those are still in 8mm Kurz so the ammo will be expensive alongside the guns.
It has nothing to do with readily available parts. It has to do with produce-ability and market.
The MP5 was killed due to multiple other manufacturers beating them to the market.
This has been killed because they were apparently sold a flawed design. HMG was known to have problems before PSA bought the design. Inwas hoping they'd have the resources to fix it but I guess not. Add in that D-K is now producing much more clone correct rifles. So part of the market share has been claimed
Technically the MP5 was doable but the problem is the prices on parts kits for the bolts and barrels went up through the roof, which I suspect is why the project fell through. Because they could have used custom lowers using ar-15 trigger groups.
My understanding is they shelved the MP5 due to cost. It wasn't going to be competitive and given the cost of the MAC5 and AP5, they're probably right.
For the MP5, the only people making the parts are HK or Turkish cloning factories. PSA won't make every single screw themselves which is what they mean when they say costs get excessive.
There isn't someone stateside making the small parts they'd need to make a competitive offering. And getting HK tooling is probably going to be hard in the US. Hk is probably more likely to sell it in turkey than they'd ever allow a competitor in the US market.
I’ve been following this project since 2015, HMG lied to years and it was apparent they couldn’t deliver a magazine let alone the whole gun, so they out sourced production to a machine shop in Utah. And it caused even more issues and delays so much so HMG sued them for everything under the sun and to get all the tooling back. Some how they fucking won and then poof PSA now has the project i knew from the start it wasn’t going to come out. Even my brother was saying it’ll finally come out, but i was like nope rumor for years was the guns couldn’t fire more than a few rounds without failing. And it’s a physical design flaw so the gun is basically a black hole at this point. This video confirms that theory, i want one to have one in the safe. But this gun is cursed and HMG is a lying pos

Also, the price is a big deterrent. If it was full auto, I'd be down for $2500+ and it would be my range toy. That price for a semi auto with atypical ammo, hard to find mags and WWII ergonomics? Ehhhh, I can think of stuff I want more.

The MP5 market is too saturated. PSA is better off finding something that they can either:
Undercut the market on.
Have the exclusive market of.
The reason why people buy PSA AK-100 series rifles is because no other company offers 100 series AKs:
Russian imports stopped.
KUSA is bankrupt.
Arsenal stopped bringing in stamped guns.
If you want an AK-103 you either buy a PSA for $800-$1000 or a Saiga for $2000-$2300.

Gun Jesus once spoke on a question something along the lines of "why aren't more reproductions of old guns made?".
To paraphrase his answer, this really only appeals to a small minority of gun owners.
Serious collectors will turn their nose up at a loosely accurate reproduction.
Most gun owners would rather just get a more functional gun like an AR or AK.
Only a small amount of people would want this enough to buy it.
Then there's the large cost of developing and producing this ST44 repro. They would have to sell a lot to make it worth.
Still, I'm sad to see it go.

Also, the price is a big deterrent. If it was full auto, I'd be down for $2500+ and it would be my range toy. That price for a semi auto with atypical ammo, hard to find mags and WWII ergonomics? Ehhhh, I can think of stuff I want more.

Fucking called it lol. You know it just had to be shit when they didn’t even try to make 3 generations to “fix” all the issues.

Now...like no shit I would buy one in 7.62x39 or 9mm (8mm Kurz is not cheap and hard to find).
IF PSA didn't make it!
