My new down size emergency go bag

What i learned from the NC hurricanes and flooding. You can't eat your guns and ammo. Know re focused on building my food and other emergency supplies to last at lest 30 days

Tbh, i would rather take a reliable Assaultrifle like an SIG 550 or 553-1. You can really abuse them and they still work. Also really easy to clean and great ironsights in case optics fail
yourboibigsmoi808@reddit
You have access to full auto sigs?
robertva1@reddit (OP)
Blow all you ammo in one shot. Not whats needed in long term survival
Narick_@reddit
I see that my view point is not shared here, i see the point in a lever action. Its lighter and less affected by malfunctions. But in stress situagions i'd rather have a semi/full-automatic rifle. If the threat would be another human or an animal, same for me. I'd imagine i feel different if i would shoot more lever actions, maybe
StressfulRiceball@reddit
Do you.... Slam on your gas pedal every time you need to drive forward?? It doesn't ONLY fire full auto...
Narick_@reddit
Well, that would currently be my service rifle, though this is just a theorethical thing/mindgame. I do not have a "go bag" and currently don't see the need for it, but personally i am way more confident with a rifle with bigger capacity than a lever action with a max of 8(?) rounds in it. Also i think to recall that the ballistics of GP90 (.223 but more boom) is way better that what a leveraction with tube mag can do.
Panthean@reddit
I'll stick with my AR for SHTF because I can't foresee many scenarios where I end up needing more than a few hundred rounds anyhow.
I certainly won't be looking for fights, and if I stumbled into them, I don't see bricks of .22lr getting me out of trouble.
I like .22's, but people seem hyper focused on ammo weight for SHTF. Give me the best tool with a few hundred rounds instead.
robertva1@reddit (OP)
Got to love the caliber snobs and all the people that think every emergency situation is going to end in a running gun battle. The rifle is mainly for small to medium game. the hand gun is to only be used as a. Extremely last resort. Best survival technique is to avoid confrontation at all costs. Remember this is my choice for when the only option is to walk out. If a vehicle is an option then heaver firepower and ammo storage is an option in the end you cant eat your ammo
Miguel1219@reddit
Part of your emergency should also be some SHTF defense, and not just rocking 22LR
Gremguy22@reddit
Definitely would look at getting more than 22lr for defense.
I could think of numerous loadouts which are better served for SHTF.
Not saying 22lr doesn't have it place, but you will be undergunned if its all you got.
TheWhiteCliffs@reddit
Not to mention .22LR can be pretty unreliable when compared to any center fire cartridge.
Gremguy22@reddit
Correct! I'm no .22 hater but when the ebola zombies or wasteland cannibals are coming at you deff need more firepower.
joconnell13@reddit
Going by the open container that appears to be filled with bullets I'm guessing that the handgun is a 9 mm.
Brilliant_Wealth_433@reddit
I kill big hogs with .22LR all the time. It's quite and often after I put one through an eye or ear canal and drop a big hog thr others do not even run. Do not underestimate an accurate .22LR.
ImpressiveWave3263@reddit
Sigh. Here we go again.
Yes, that may well be the case, but in an emergency you are probably not going to be taking a whole lot of shots where both you and your target are still, and you have the element of surprise, like when you're hunting hog and can get a shot off with enough accuracy to hit its eye or ear canal. As you highlighted, one should not underestimate an accurate .22LR.
Hence why .22LR is a fucking terrible choice for an emergency go bag (or at least for having BOTH of your guns chambered in it). Of course it can kill a hog or a deer or a human, if it's a well-placed shot, and/or you don't mind if it takes a few minutes to do the job. In an emergency that probably won't be the case, and your target will probably be moving -- perhaps away from the emergency, or perhaps towards you. In which case your odds of taking your prey/neutralizing a threat quickly enough that it doesn't escape or kill you are likely lower than you'd like them to be.
A .22LR is a great choice for hunting small or medium-sized game if you can't get food. In any circumstance where you would need a go bag that you grab on your way out the door due to an emergency, for heaven's sake put a proper gun in there.
Brilliant_Wealth_433@reddit
I would never carry a .22LR for my sidearm for sure or shoot a moving target other than maybe something small. My targets have no idea I am about to put one in there brain so your absolutely correct. We'll be hog hunting again tonight and my first shot will be the .22 and when they scatter my son will be mag dumping 5.56 from the AR using thermal as well.
robertva1@reddit (OP)
When your looking at hiking out 12 to 20 miles. You will chose 2lbs of food over 2.7lbs for 100 rounds of 223-5.56 vs .7 lbs for 100 rounds of 22lr
ImpressiveWave3263@reddit
For your off-grid SHTF bug-out hunting rifle, sure, that makes a lot of sense.
But if you happen to encounter other, desperate people who have also bugged out due to some SHTF event, you're going to wish you had a real sidearm (at the very least) for self-defense. Even if that means huffing a few extra ounces on your nature walk.
Brilliant_Wealth_433@reddit
This is exactly my thinking. I'll take 500 rounds of .22LR over bigger calibers for off grid survival if I am on the move. Don't get me wrong I am pretty rural here, and have some hefty stockpiles of 5.56, 6.5 Creedmoor, 30/06, 12 guage and 16 guage and a ton of 9mm. However if I have to move long distance on foot the .22 and a ton of ammo are coming for sure. Depending on group size other weapon platforms will to.
Woodpusherpro@reddit
Why would they scatter, last post you said they don't even run?
Brilliant_Wealth_433@reddit
The shot doesn't make them run with the .22. Once one hits the ground flipping in circles they certainly start to scatter. Take a second one down and they certainly scatter.
Woodpusherpro@reddit
I'm with you now
juggarjew@reddit
I understand it can work with correct shot placement but if you're in SHTF and you NEED that hog to die so you dont starve, you probably dont want to rely on .22 LR to get the job done. Of course if its all you got then its all you got. I would much rather use a .357 lever gun, super common round and can be used to hunt deer as well, plus can use .38 Special if thats all you got or can find.
Brilliant_Wealth_433@reddit
Oh there are better suited rounds for sure. What I like about .22LR in a bug out scenario is the amount of rounds you can carry without adding to much weight. I just killed a 250 lb sow at 60 yards with my Ruger 10/22 with one shot 3 days ago. My Ruger is dead nuts accurate and unless I am hunting at night with thermal is all I kill hogs with. We are overrun here and a many of pig dies from my .22. Of course I trust my shot placement within 75 yards. Deer are even easier to knock down, not that I would ever do that because of laws and all. Plus taking small game is better for sure. Now we start talking self defense or a charging hog or God forbid a tangle with a cougar HELL NO to the .22.

He has paper targets in the go bag too lol

Guaranteed that weighs close to a single shot youth shotgun. I would carry a more lethal pistol for looters. Â Could carry birdshot, buckshot, slugs, dragons breath. There are also shotshells for every pistol caliber. 12g to .22 lr adapter, 12g to 9mm adapter for compatibility with your pistol, 12g to 209 black powder adapter so you can shoot anything that fits down barrel. You can get 12 gauge flares to signal for rescue or shoot into a tinder bundle to start fire. Â Single shot shotguns also break in half to be shorter than that .22. I own both of those .22s, theyre great. I would carry your loadout for hunting all day. But in a hurricane zone, people are desperate man. I want the big iron on my hip.Â

Airsoft holsterđź’€Targets in an emergency bag, bruh.
GreyBeardsStan@reddit
With no context this is hilarious. It's also a ridiculous choice
HemHaw@reddit
That little wallet looks like maybe the least space-efficient way to store 22lr that I've ever seen.
I have that same gun but in pump-action. Protip: It feeds 22 short just fine and it's hearing safe without a suppressor.
Fuzzy_Beautiful_7544@reddit
.22 for hunting is fine. But if you get in a confrontation where you need to sling lead you gotta get something else. I only have a semi 410 shotgun or a .22 pistol. I'd be pretty screwed in a gunfight with those.
SohndesRheins@reddit
It's not mobile, but a five gallon bucket of rice, a five gallon bucket of dried beans, a jug of soy or teriyaki sauce, a jug of honey or molasses, and some basic spices will keep you fed for a fairly long time and will last for years and years if you keep it dry.
juggarjew@reddit
I dont accept this, you cant only have .22 LR, this is not acceptable. .22 is a great round and certainly you should have those guns, but you really need a proper self defense cartridge. At least a 9mm pistol at a bare minimum.
IntoTheMirror@reddit
My 10/22 takedown fits perfectly in a Northface bag. A good bug out bag and gun shouldn’t scream “there’s a gun in here”.
