Gun Show Disappointment
Posted by divok1701@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 121 comments
Went to the gun show recently for the first time and was very disappointed in the prices.
I always figured there would be deals compared to regular retail, but there really wasn't.
On the used guns, the vendors were willing to negotiate, but I am looking for new. New prices were at or above retail.
There was only 1 deal on some new CZ semiautomatic shotguns, but that was it... everything else was as much or higher priced.
Is this normal?
What's the point of paying $15 entry fee if nothing is on sale?
I could have just went into my local gun store and bought it for the same price, hell, the one local one there even said, if I changed my mind and stop in later in the week his prices were the same in the shop.
I was like, well, I had checked before and that was his normal price anyway!
At least Bass Pro Shop sometimes actually has sales, so guess I'll just keep an eye on what I'm looking to buy.
Beebjank@reddit
Gun shows are for handling firearms before you purchase them online, beef jerky, occasional sus dude selling M855A1 and 308 AP, and soap.
Pist0lPetePr0fachi@reddit
Don't forget the super suspect, ultra sketchy Nazi memorabilia and Army FM books.
Ok-Nothing6877@reddit
Don’t forget the random temu stun gun going off in the background.
divok1701@reddit (OP)
Omg! There were 2 different tables with stun guns going off like every few seconds!
observant302@reddit
Don't forget the pickles, dog training and seasonal home decor.........
I was at a show and some teenage cat was selling hot wheels/matchbox cars.
kit_carlisle@reddit
Just don't buy windows.
Xavierphillips702@reddit
What kind of pickles and what kind of hot wheels? These are the important questions
Educational-Light-71@reddit
seems the smaller amount of tables at a show bring out the most garbage. eventually me and a buddy came up with a rule.. no show smaller than 1000 tables.. cause the 500 or less always had stuff like socks and other garbage to go with the gun show pickles and jerky.
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
Speak for yourself, I was always there for the cheese and beef jerky. Damn, there was some good cheese at the gun show I used to go to…
AR15sAndShitV2@reddit
Wisconsin gun show id presume….
snippysniper@reddit
I’m sorry…. Cheese? Why have I never seen a cheese booth. Fat white people love nothing more than cheese…and guns
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
You have been denied a delicacy, my boy. The gun shows in Fort Worth always (and may still, IDK) had a booth selling cheese, sausage, and jerky. I honestly spent more money on the cheese and sausages than I did on guns.
snippysniper@reddit
That’s how gun shows are supposed to be. People watching and laughing at the ridiculous prices
HoustonHenry@reddit
Calm down buddy, it's gonna be ok!
AngriestManinWestTX@reddit
ITS NOT OKAY, I WANT MY SMOKED GOUDA AND BEEF JERKY.
HoustonHenry@reddit
Hey buddy, I live in Texas too and I can't have you fucking our state up with your anger! I'll find some, ok?! 🤣
Particular-Rich304@reddit
I just go for the excellent selection of high quality of turquoise jewelry
observant302@reddit
Heck yeah.
You just reminded me about the faux Damascus cutlery.......
Particular-Rich304@reddit
I mean, if you’re not there for faux Damascus cutlery, what are you even doing with your life..
observant302@reddit
These days the gun show is more about getting breakfast with a bunch of cats. I don't really get to see that much
And we wander around you know passing judgment on the people and nonsense that we said
PM-PicsOfYourMom@reddit
In the 90s-00s I used to go with my dad to buy wwii memorabilia. Now that stuff is either insanely overpriced, a Chinese knockoff or both. Glad I got my m1 garand, m1911, luger, k98k, etc when I did. Still never got a genuine trench gun.

Big_Bill23@reddit
I came to say that; when you want to see how a gun feels in your hand, the gun show is the place to go. Just, not the place to buy.
malitove@reddit
For every 1 good deal, you're going to have to dig through 100 shitty deals, beef jerky, and pointless bullshit. There are very few reasons to go to gun shows. Bargain pricing isn't it.
pat_e_ofurniture@reddit
The days of deals at gun shows are long gone. I used to hit all of them in a 100 mi radius of home, different locations had different deals. Haven't been to one in 10 years because everything seems to be above retail and catered towards people willing to pay anything to get what they want.
Nowadays I work a circuit of shops over a 4 state area, some more than others, to find what I want at a price I'm willing to pay. Actual gun purchases are limited to a handful of places within a 30 minute drive of home. Parts, ammo and accessories is where I cast a wide net.
Spiritual_Resist_769@reddit
Back in the day (late 90s or early 2000s), I used to find some deals at gun shows. But nowadays not worth going. there are too many fuds who think they are sitting on gold. Some people will walk around with their personal items for sale, but other than that, not much deals out there.
Stock_Block2130@reddit
I was at a gun show during Covid. Almost got a new Savage Stevens 320 shotgun for a very good price but another guy grabbed it. Everything else was expensive. I did like being able to handle all the guns, though.
Mobile_Speaker7894@reddit
I have setup to sell at shows local to myself in the past. And watching all of the other dealers. If they all had a glock 19 within 45 minutes they all had the price matching on all of the tables. I quit going years ago because the lack of deals. The best thing is finding the oddball part or accessories for a good price. But those are overpriced most of the time. It's the old one in a hand, two in the bush analogy. Do you need it now or can you wait to order it. The only people making money at the shows are the promotion crew and the owner of the facility.
FitCommunication9939@reddit
It sounds like you had a frustrating experience at the gun show! It's disappointing when you expect deals and find that prices are the same or higher than retail. It seems like many vendors tend to price match, which takes away the incentive to shop there. It might be better to stick to local stores or even online sales where you can find real discounts.
By the way, if you ever need to deal with price matching or refunds, you could check out JoinPap. It helps streamline the refund process, saving you time and hassle. Just Google "JoinPap" for more info!
Playful-Collar6028@reddit
I haven’t been to a gun show in years till this year. I bought Lee 4 die set for the 6.5 creed ( I know but I won the gun) and a pound and a little of 5744 for my muzzleloader. there some other deals but I was only looking for a couple things. If I have an issue with the dies they have a lifetime warranty. I saw gun purchases being made but I’m a bad haggler.
f250suite@reddit
Gun shows are only relevant anymore if you're in the market for jerkey or Paladin Press books that you can buy with cash.
Gun shops might as well be as relevant as gun shows with the way online prices are.
Ernie_McCracken88@reddit
Gun shows are like Walmart you go for the people watching
Morgul_Mage@reddit
Exactly! My adult kids and I like to book, look at the various guns, and laugh at the weird tacticool people. Keeps us chuckling for months!
SchuLace13@reddit
Yeah it’s normal now. Good deals were gone years ago. Unless you either just want to look around or you want to find an odd older firearm, gun shows are a waste of time and money.
xj98jeep@reddit
Yeah, like 15-20 years ago. My dad used to take me on the weekends when I was a kid so I watched their downfall with the rise of the internet

ParkerVH@reddit

Yes, the largest selection of knives in one place... my kid actually got one... though still pricier than other places!

SwimminginInsanity@reddit
You can find everything their stock on Aliexpress for a fraction of what they're charging too.
Sliced_Orange1@reddit
Usually just a Benchmade booth with the usual wicked overpriced basic knives lol
Double_Minimum@reddit
There was a major Magpul distributor who used to show up to the big ones we had twice a year. He had the ability to match prices, and maybe even beat them if you bought multiple items. But that was like a decade ago, and when I scored an HK P7 for $700 that I will always regret selling (even though it tripled in price over the ~4 years I had it.
my72dart@reddit
By military surplus, do you mean that one guy selling a suspicious amount of Nazi memorabilia?
The_James_Spader@reddit
This
ImpressiveWave3263@reddit
Yeah this is consistent with every gun show I've been to since about 2008, then I just stopped going.
There's just too much overpriced everything, tons of garbage Chinesium knives and tasers, insufferable people who think those knives and tasers are cool, Fudds who know what they got and want $1400 for a bubba'd SKS with a scope attached using hardware store parts, and that one table of Nazi stuff that's for "historical value" despite some of it clearly having been recently manufactured, also in China.
No thanks.
anothercarguy@reddit
By years ago you mean the year the awb expired?
ComradeGarcia_Pt2@reddit
I’m of the opinion that they never actually existed.
dragonsuns@reddit
Around me, gun shows are where local FFLs try to sell their old stock at inflated prices to gullible buyers
GhostC10_Deleted@reddit
I just go to look at weird guns/people and get jerky at this point. Those are still fun for me.
ShireHorseRider@reddit
They don’t have racks of “tacticool” gear and edgy patches? I have yet to go to a gun show, but I could see myself seeking out a backpack & some fun patches…. And I’d love to find a reasonably priced FAL.
StayStrong888@reddit
Ca gun shows have not been worth it for 30 years.
The parking fee, the long lines, the entry fee, the crowd... just forget it.
There are no deals on guns or ammo. And half the site is filled with timeshare, hot tub, RV, beef jerky, juice, and sauna sales.
Then you got tons of dirty grungy booths selling rusted crap at high prices and if you want, tons of war memorabilia, especially nazi shit.
Almost-Jaded@reddit
Gun shows haven't been worthwhile in 15 years.
Hobbit54321@reddit
This is typical of gun shows anymore. I went to one on Saturday with Dad and he found a brick of Large pistol primers for 80 and I found some 147 grain 30 caliber slugs for 15 cents a piece. Was it worth going monetary, not really. You can occasionally find a deal on something but it's far more rare than it used to be.
Palehorse67@reddit
I don't go to gun shows anymore. You want a new gun, handle it at a show or local place, then go gun.deals and find it hundreds of dollars cheaper most times.
Pathfinder6a@reddit
There are tons of great deals to be had at gun shows, but just not the ones you want. I agree that gun shows aren’t the place to buy new guns. But, used guns are another story. My best gun deals have been estate guns on consignment. You just have to do your homework before you go.
10gaugetantrum@reddit
I quit going to gun shows. I used to go to a lot years ago and help out a friend who had an FFL. The deals dried up, he quit going and so did I. There was a lot of bang for your buck, didn't matter if you were buying a gun or ammo. Now the deals seem to be online.
Provia100F@reddit
I saw a Chinese SKS for $699 that someone was actively negotiating down to $499, and they settled at $649.
There's no fucking deals at gun shows.
Data-McBytes@reddit
Gun shows are for people who just want to fondle some guns and "new gun owners" who don't know any better.
WhiskeyFree68@reddit
Honestly I just go to get hard to find ammo for my antiques and this really awesome lens wax for my eye pro that you can literally only get at gun shows.

bcooper1974@reddit
I for the most part agree…. But I have bought a couple at my local gun show. Now there are many that have stupid prices and even make stupid comments.. I know it’s not nice but I hear some of the stupid shit they tell people looking and sometimes when it’s just so off, I’m like the LGS has it for less. Now the last one I did get was the TTI Combat… Paid retail BUT I didn’t have to pay tax. So I did save a couple bucks. I would say I’ve gotten maybe 3 guns like that… The last maybe little better find was a private seller with the IWI Masada S on his table new in box with 4 mags instead of 2 and he was asking retail and I asked if he would take 25 less and he did, so no tax and 2 extra mags, so not bad. I have however been a number of times when nothing was worth the cost. So I basically have accepted the 15 dollar loss for parking and admissions as fun to look around.
Bravo82bill@reddit
If you go to a “ local “ gun shows are to small and they are more flea market vibes. They are some really big ones, I think like Vegas, some places in Florida at one of the footballs domes? Guys? Where are the big gun shows at?
pomdudes@reddit
So, I always recommend folks go to gun shows. For that $15 cover, you got to see more DIFFERENT guns than if you drove to every gun dealer in your state. Ignore the stuff you don’t care about and focus on what you do.
That said, I do clarify to those folks that they probably aren’t going to find new guns at deep discount. (Sometimes though, you’ll score a Kel-Tec CP33 for $300 or Henry H001 for $285.) Honestly, if you were looking for new, go to the show, handle the ones you want, then go online and buy it and have it sent to that LGS you like, because he’s probably screwing you too.
Gun shows are best for stuff your LGS just isn’t going to stock. Old stuff, used stuff, weird calibers, shit tons of accessories, etc. Ignore the gutter guard chick, the taser, the jerky, the crap knives. (Funny aside: the RADA cutlery guy bought a Paki Damascus knife from another table, went at it with a RADA bread knife and put them on his table as a display. The crap knife guy tried to get tge show promoter to make him take it off. )
Th3BaconNation@reddit
That's been the norm for at least the last 30 years.
Stores with a true physical presence don't go to gun shows. They don't need to. The vast majority of vendors at gun shows are what I'd call 'at-home FFLs.'
Consider how difficult it is for a mom and pop store with a real physical presence to compete with the big box stores and online bulk vendors. Now go one level smaller. A small store probably has tens of thousands of dollars in inventory. A big box store will have tens of thousands of dollars worth of a single firearm in stock, and that same is likely true for dozens of firearms they have in the store. The big stores buy in such a volume their price is well below small volume shops. They can sell at much lower prices and still make money.
There are deals to be found at gun shows, but its more like being a diamond hunter in that state park. You can find them, but its mostly about being at the right place at the right time and looking in the right spot, and you have to know what to look for.
I'd also point out that at regular gun stores, and even big box stores, you can haggle - even on new guns. Not every store does it, but as long as you don't go insultingly low plenty of places do it. You'd be surprised how much wiggle room you get some places, and what you can get tossed in. Another phrase people don't often think of to use at the gun store is "do you price match?" Some places will price match other local stores, including big box competitors.
a_wildcat_did_growl@reddit
What's wrong with that? I don't mind buying from someone who doesn't have the cash to rent a brick-and-mortar shop.
RacerXrated@reddit
Gun shows suck. Tasers, chinesium knives, boomers who "know what they got", rednecks who haven't showered in days, some fella pushing a shotgun around in a stroller with the muzzle pointed at his head, and that sus dude in the Nazi uniform.
Books and surplus gear are about the only worthwhile things I've found in a long time.
moving0target@reddit
They're there for nostalgia.
I went to a show a few years ago that had a table of legit white supremacists. Gunshows were killed by the internet. Think about Circuit City, if you can remember that store.
Bdubble27@reddit
I haven't been to a gun show for years. Last time I went, some guy tried selling me a bubba'd sks for $800.
Educational-Light-71@reddit
been to i think in my lifetime about 14 gun shows and they seem to vary.
my thoughts..
i don't think gun shows are for value..
mostly garbage..
mostly over priced.. ammo / guns
pickles.
jerky.
war stuff.
shit from someones basement.
and sometimes sneaking in political shit
sometimes you come across a rare gem you havent had a chance to find .. but it'll cost you.
out of those 14 gun shows..
i think i've bought
jerky in bulk
backpack -> to carry my haul of jerky (early in my going to show career i wasnt prepared)
pickles once.
a really nifty set of target stands from some company out of michigan (if i recall) that seems to have gone out of business.
3 guns (2 of which i sold to other dealers a year or two later)
i look at the price of admission to a gun show more for the experience than serious "shopping"
2WheelSuperiority@reddit
Only gun I ever bought from a gun show was a 1984 SW revolver at a good price. You don't buy new guns at a gun show. You pay MSRP if you do. Everyone knows the best gun deals are sought online, through certain drop shippers.
FirstArmament@reddit
Gun shows have a table fee and it unfortunately goes towards the customer. Big box stores such as bass pro can buy in large bulk and minimize the retail price close to dealer wholesale prices that is why some firearms at big box chains are unbeatable for us mom and pop stores. However, if you want one on one personalized service with a mom and pop you will always be take care of. I for one look out for my customers. I want repeat business but I also want to make a profit (not much). I take it to the extreme I throw in goodies like oil and other things. Hope this helps. Please support your local mom & pop gun dealer.
Unpopular_Ninja@reddit
Yea man, they used to not be like that but then sanctions and covid gave every vendor an easy “never gonna see these again, limited supply buy now!” “Rare steel case!” “Authentic Russian Ishevsk!!! 5k!!” Type BS and then Covid just obliterated the market for new gun owners. Right now you have every boomer and person over 35 trynna offload their collections because they’ve never seen things priced this high. IMO buy like 2 things you really really want and just wait for the oldies to start dying and their collections to pop up for Pennie’s in the dollar because they couldn’t be bothered to have a relationship with their grand kids or kids.

It seems like online commerce brought us near-perfect knowledge of global prices and that would eliminate "deals" since anyone selling it to you in person can sell it to anyone in the US without too much additional friction.
Cliff_Dibble@reddit
Went to a gun show in Knoxville and there were A LOT of private sellers telling me as I perused their wares that they weren't obligated to do background checks.
I feel kinda sad I gave off that vibe.
santar0s80@reddit
There is no incentive for sellers to offer deals as they have increased costs and hassles during the shows
They have to pay for table, lug all their inventory around, and answer the same question 500 times.
I'm not sure why anyone brings new stock to a gun show anyways.
And usually the used stuff is way overpriced.
Poprocketrop@reddit

My thing used to be shopping for reloading stuff. I have a Dillon XL550 or something. 4 stage press, spent almost $600 on it. Dies for every caliber in my safe. It's gotten to the point where just buying factory ammo is cheaper. Nobody carries powder, primers, or bullets anymore, or if they do, they're cost prohibitive.

This is the norm nowadays. You're much better off shopping gun.deals, ordering online, and picking up from your local dealer. That's where the good deals are nowadays, not at gun shows.
Affectionate-Cry251@reddit

Jumpy-Imagination-81@reddit
I have found many good deals on used guns at gun shows. I also bought some new guns at gun shows. Large gun shows have a wider selection of guns than any store, and the new guns I bought at gun shows aren’t commonly seen at gun stores, like my Glock 40 10mm.
It is also much easier to handle a large number of handguns at a gun show compared to a gun store. At a gun store you have to wait until a salesperson is available, then point out what one handgun you want to handle, then have them take it out of the display case. At a gun show everything is spread out on tables and within a few minutes you can pick up several handguns and see how they feel in your hand.

I rarely buy modern firearms at gun shows.
I go to gun shows for uncommon antique and vintage firearms; to handle certain more difficult to find modern firearms I might be interested in (and might purchase online); obscure, obsolete/uncommon cartridges; antique knives (and very rarely quality vintage custom knives or lightly used higher end production knives at gas station knife prices); and the occasional random antique I might be interested in.
About half of the gun shows I go to are nearly a total bust, but occasionally I find a deal on something I'm interested in.
Only_Big_5406@reddit
Think of it as a $15 fair. You go look at old guns and occasionally find decent used accessories. Then you leave at 12-1pm and go get lunch. Sounds like a decent weekend to me 😂

I've snagged a few good deals at gun shows... always used. The more rural shows tend to be, well maybe not better but, at least more interesting.
Buddy of mine said he was going to show in X city. I told him X city show usually sucks because it's all shops, and it's all marked up. Said he was looking for a Five Seven. Told him to try A#1 shop about an hour away.
He calls me back about an hour later saying he found one, I told him that sounded high and he should call A#1 shop because they probably have one... he reluctantly agrees. Next call from him is from his car as he's getting on the interstate. A#1 shop was $400 cheaper...
Then_North_6347@reddit

unfortunately, this is how gun shows are now. decided or two ago, they were actually a good place to find deals. I've spent many weekends at gun shows, and I always left with something I was looking for. now I only go if I have time and money to waste. I still get that excited feeling when I see a gun show sign, but it's immediately followed by disappointment knowing how they are thease days .
Rotaryknight@reddit
I use gun shows as a way to handle guns that my local stores don't have. Currently I'm looking at various hammer fired guns that my local gun stores don't have. But at gun shows it's all there to pick up, test trigger, feel the weight and all.
But most of the time when I do buy something there, it's either accessories, or rifles
Stevarooni@reddit
Anymore, gun shows are good for seeing what's out there, and finding a wide variety of overpriced snacks.
CaptJoshuaCalvert@reddit
Gun shows as a place where there are deals to be had is a myth. I've been to a few since the late 1990s, and they're always, universally, pointless: high prices, weird people, and unrestrained farting have been common to all.
Stretchearstrong@reddit
Gun shows are for selling your onesie-twosie used guns, not buying them.
gravity_loss@reddit
I haven't been to a big gun show in many years, however the fun was getting to see and handle a bunch of old milsurps, C&R, black power/antiques, novelties like $5 for a 50BMG round or belts of dummy 30-cal, gas masks, old guys selling ammo/boxes from the 40s that isn't really available anymore. Stuff you don't see in stores for the most part.
Occasionally you'd come across a deal or at least something reasonably priced that you have been looking for. Best stripper clips I ever bought were from a gun show.
They're more of a "show and tell/swap meet" for the firearms enthusiast (or at least used to be) and a lot of the older folks selling used guns were knowledgable and great to chat with.
RSTH24@reddit
You have to keep in mind that sellers are obligated to advertise MAP prices. Most will sell for less but you have to ask.
Shootist00@reddit
Kind of my experience also. Have been going to gun shows for years both in GA and now AL. Older shows, back in the late 90's and early to mid 2000 in GA you could find some deals and as I'm a reloader you could find powder, primers, bullets, cleaning media and reloading parts/pieces at a decent price. But now you have the internet and I think the big thing is the stupid politicians with them harping on the nonexistent Gun Show Loop Hole which draws more people that think they can get a gun without any background checks. Dealers raise prices to pray on those types.
Now I simply go to look at the guns and knives and I have been looking for 1 gun for years. A Walther, made in Germany, PP in 380 Auto. Had one once back in the 80's and traded it in for a PPK. Wish I hadn't. So far the only older German made PP's I've seen at gun shows have been 32ACP.
I'll still go when I have the time just for something to do that day.
