Got me to school and back.
Fit-Distribution2303@reddit
I had a cream Plymouth Reliant K too. I wanna say it was an 81 or 82. It was my.... 2nd car. It had cream trim. Bought it from my cousin.
I loved my K car!
bigwomby@reddit
Chick magnet.
zipzippa@reddit
My dad got one of these brand new awful lot in like 1986 or 1987 it was his first car with air conditioning.
surfdad67@reddit
I had a K-car exactly like this, limped it into a Ford Dealership and got me a Ford Escort Wagon. Also had a Plymouth Reliant, pretty much the same car
TheJokersChild@reddit
Salud for opting into a wagon.
surfdad67@reddit
One of the best cars I ever had, easy and cheap to fix, broke down once because of the timing belt, $150 to fix. Had that car for 14 years, 185k miles. Ended up giving it to someone in need.
LemonPuckerFace@reddit
Oh man. I had one of these. I couldn't get up to highway speeds if I had the AC on.
Seats were comfy though.
bellhall@reddit
You had AC???? My 88 dodge Aries K didn’t even have FM radio, AM only. Certainly no fancy air conditioning!
LemonPuckerFace@reddit
Mine was fully loaded! I bought it from some old folks when they couldn't drive anymore. The thing had almost no miles on it and was pristine!
It did smell like nasty perfume, cigarettes, and old people for a while though.
Feeling-Ad-2490@reddit
K car!!
elspotto@reddit
My first thought when I saw the image? “Ooh, a K-Car!”
vermarbee@reddit
Same! I went on 1 date with a guy who drove one. A light blue K-Car-windows down. Only one date though 😆
clamdigger@reddit
a nice reliant automobile
evilJaze@reddit
Ahh, the nice Reliant automobile! It was my wife's first car. Every winter when it was damp, I had to pop off the distributor cap and spray WD40 on the contacts daily so it would start. Then the engine would just randomly stop when we were out on the highway on several occasions. So much fun!
Global_Lie6938@reddit
That was the trick? My HS car. I would go somewhere, it would start to rain, I’d bum a ride home, and go collect the car the next dry day. In-Reliant K. I totaled it in college, not on purpose, but was a fitting final end for it.
evilJaze@reddit
Yeah, that did it for us for a while until all its other problems make it more of a nuisance than a necessity so we ended up selling it for $500. We felt we ripped them off. The distributor cap WD40 was FiL's solution - we knew nothing about mechanical stuff back then.
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
I had one of those cars 😭
Independent_Ad_5664@reddit
So, you had a million dollars?
surfdad67@reddit
I do and I still eat Kraft dinners with Dijon Ketchup
evilJaze@reddit
Yes. I own a house in Canada. Instant millionaire.
zombie_spiderman@reddit
Damn, dude, save some chicks for the rest of us
Elharley@reddit
My mom’s first new car. Transmission fell apart the first week. It was constantly in the shop. An absolute piece of garbage. Was eventually replaced with a pre owned Nissan.
whiskeytown79@reddit
My family had a Dodge Aries of this same vintage. Pretty sure they're basically the same car with minor trim and branding differences.
KirbyHaveYouHeard@reddit
My first car was a white 88 Plymouth Reliant.....loved having the bench seats but hated how much it shook when going over 50 mph and no AC. Paid $1000....drove it for 5 years.
devilinthedetails@reddit
Mine was an 88 and navy blue.
SiliconEagle73@reddit
Hey, it still beats a Cybertruck! ;-)
uberphaser@reddit
My best friend had a stick shift version! Front bench seats with a stick shift was always such a weird look.
EatMe1975@reddit
1985 Dodge Aries here…It was sorta blue sorta grey…I win
HighwaySixtyOne@reddit
Sheeeeit, my family had an '81 in dog barf beige (bench seat w/ a four-speed on the floor), and then --AND THEN!!!-- when my parents offered to buy my perfect princess of a straight-A, valedictorian, older sister a car, so she could attend her HS internship at Hopkins, they offered her the choice of anything made for the 1988 model year.
...and she picked a four-door Dodge Aries in midnight blue. She coulda' picked a CRX or a Prelude, an Acura Integra, a Mazda 626 hatch or an MX-6... hell, even a base Mustang. But nah. An Aries K-car.
There are no winners in these unfortunate battles.
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit (OP)
My sister had a blue-grey Dodge Aries. She thought she was special too.
PoppaDaClutch@reddit
We wouldn’t have the new challengers/chargers without the k car!
Roland__Of__Gilead@reddit
If I had a million dollars,,,,
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit (OP)
You wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner.
(But you would eat Kraft Dinner.)
HighwaySixtyOne@reddit
Of course we would, we'd just eat more.
NipperAndZeusShow@reddit
we wouldn't have to walk to the store
stompinstinker@reddit
The other day I was thinking how garbage cars of this generation were. Oil spots in every parking spot, rust galore, abysmal safety, more rust again, burning oil, exhaust leaks, squeaky engine, and even more rust.
jaypee42@reddit
Remember the Hyundai Pony? You could watch it rust looking at it parked in your driveway.
Superb_Astronomer_59@reddit
Worlds first biodegradable car lol
HighwaySixtyOne@reddit
Mine was a dark blue '88.
Let us never speak of this horror again.
bygtopp@reddit
Stepmom had one in gray. Used to haul rocks for the garden in the trunk. That thing had miles on it to the bingo hall.
70sRitalinKid@reddit
Camp Pendleton MPs drove K cars in the 80s. Only the provost marshal had a crown vic.
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit (OP)
I still see Crown Vics driving around town, most of which used to be police cruisers, and I chuckle whenever I see people on the highway slow way down as they get close to one.
70sRitalinKid@reddit
Oh that feeling of being so disappointed in yourself when you realize that you just hastened your god awful commute for a car that has been out of service for a decade!
Local-Finance8389@reddit
1984 Chrysler Lebaron convertible here. There were holes in the top and a hole in the floorboard and I still thought it was awesome.
trinaryouroboros@reddit
mine was a maroon plymouth horizon hatchback that had over 300k miles on it and no shocks
Alldamage@reddit
My second car was a silver K-car, 1986. Actually able to get a date driving that rolling contraceptive.
External_Side_7063@reddit
You’re not our generation if you didn’t have one of these or at least knew someone that did
VAHoosier@reddit
I grew up in New Castle Indiana, where Chrysler had a factory. These cars were like 80% of the cars on the road in my town in the 80’s. Probably still a good percentage still around; up on blocks but still around. 🤣
jaypee42@reddit
Hey, that’s a nice reliant automobile.
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit (OP)
It was either this or a nice Chesterfield or an ottoman.
jaypee42@reddit
But not a real one, that’s cruel.
clawstrike72@reddit
Those things had the best visor-light design, straight out of the future.
jaypee42@reddit
Lee Iacocca’s finest hour
threeoldbeigecamaros@reddit
I flipped one of these. 0/10, would not recommend
Alarming-Mongoose-91@reddit
Every undercover cop car from the 80s
OreoSpeedwaggon@reddit (OP)
Replaced in the '90s by the Ford Crown Victoria.
lazerdab@reddit
I had the 85 Dodge Aries wagon K Car. The K Car is quietly one of the best cars America ever produced.
borkborkbork99@reddit
1986 Dodge 600 convertible. Drove it into the ground in college.
rojo-perro@reddit
My best friend from childhood was Kari and my favorite animal is the orangutan! Oh wait…
MikeW226@reddit
Love how principal Rooney had this exact car in Ferris Buehler's day off. Like, THEN ya knew the car was uncool... watching that movie in the theater!
bastrdsnbroknthings@reddit
To think that in the ‘80s this car was intended to exude some kind of professional (?) style for middle class working stiffs.
The_Spectacle@reddit
yeah, I got a kick out of Principal Rooney driving one in Ferris Bueller
Civility2020@reddit
I had an 86 handed down from my Grandfather.
The car that saved Chrysler and made Lee Iacocca famous.
anotherpredditor@reddit
Get the airbag checked. My grandmother took half the steering wheel to the face after a small bump. It was a known issue.
TheBugHouse@reddit
Ugh ... had an '85 in powder blue. Was my moms and my parents insisted I sell my actually reliable Mitsubishi hatchback and drive that pos. 6 months in and the aluminum engine blew due to a cracked block... wouldn't you know they insisted I pay for an engine replacement, despite the mechanic trying to talk then out of it.
External_Cantaloupe@reddit
This was my drivers ed car
SomeCrazedBiker@reddit
I took my driver's test in that exact model and color.
Over-Director-4986@reddit
Ah. The infamous K car. We all knew someone who had one!
bwanabass@reddit
Nice! Mine was an ‘83 Aries coupe. K-Car was where it was at!
Stinkydadman@reddit
She’s a beaut’ Clark
No-Setting-2669@reddit
I had the red one
NocturnalPermission@reddit
Ha! One of my friends had an old clapped out K station wagon in sky blue. She was the first of our group to drive and we loaded SO MANY people into that thing the tires were scraping the wheel wells. The headliner was falling down so she just pulled it off and the inside of her roof because a graffiti wall where we’d scratch our names and stuff into the residual foamy glue up there. GOOD TIMES!
Th3WeirdingWay@reddit
My first car in wagon form baby blue. 😂
ConsequenceNational4@reddit
My friend had one we'd drive around in. It was a maroon color. Lots memories going places with friends.
Mustystench@reddit
My parents got a maroon one as well. Over time, it became sort of an art project. I allowed someone to sign their name inside and that escalated to the point where the entire car was covered inside and out.
Invasive-farmer@reddit
Wish I had one now.
bossdankmemes@reddit
My first car!
oldschool_potato@reddit
My father was in the FBI and that was his field car. It had double plates. A government plate with a regular plate over top of it. He wouldn't put single mile on that thing if it wasn't work related. The man was as straight as they came.
draggar@reddit
Mine, too, but it was red and a hand-me-down from my parents.
BubbaChanel@reddit
I had the 2 door “sport” model in black!
Edard_Flanders@reddit
My grandma had a white one.
fridayimatwork@reddit
Oh the kcars! Awkward convo with my best friends dad as to why there were weeds in his kcar grill
