Don’t know if this has been asked before, (also crossposted) What are your superstitions?

I had an itchy left palm the other day , which I believe , itchy palms means something to do with money, left to leave and right to receive. It got me thinking about other superstitions and what they are?

Never say macbeth within the theatre, it's the Scottish play, Never whistle in the theatre unless danger is involved

Saluting magpies
Always wear my scarf when I go watch the football (even in late spring/summer)
Dragonitro@reddit
If I don't touch everything with the left & right sides of my body equally (both for an equal amount of time and force) then I'll either die in my sleep or get arrested (e.g. if my right foot touches my bed I have to touch it with my left foot afterwards)
No idea why I believe that (can get very annoying sometimes though)
MooMmu@reddit
Always salute single magpies. Have done since being a child and being told it would bring bad luck if you didn’t
kylehyde84@reddit
I do this.... But now it's morphed to "Hi Mr Magpie, how's your wife?" 🤷♂️
harleyquinnxo92@reddit (OP)
I always say, hello mr magpie have a nice day
DanStFella@reddit
For me it’s “good morning/afternoon mr magpie”
N30NIX@reddit
lol I go one further now and say: good day magpie, greetings to the partner as I’m not sure how to tell m/f apart …

Always be respectful and kind to corvids, they're little fuckers and they remember.

My nanna used to say it's unlucky to pass on the stairs, so I don't. Sometimes in big buildings with long staircases I can be stuck waiting ages for them to clear.

I believe a double yolker means it’ll be a good/lucky day. Idk if it counts as superstitious but i believe a lot in dreams having meanings or being some form of communication

You don't think "What are your superstitions?" had been asked before?

I have a stupid superstition when I go to watch my team play football.
When I've gone to see them play live, I've never seen them lose when I've eaten some food at the stadium. This also applies to the women's team when I've seen them play at home in the same stadium.
This was reinforced when I went to watch the women's team play an away game and ate food at the away team's stadium, my team ended up losing 1-0 in a shock loss and never again will I eat at the stadium away
Stupid, but I try to do my bit for the team(s) 🫡

Who do you support?
IcyPuffin@reddit
I do the itchy palms thing too. Left you spend money right you gain money. Rub the itchy palm on wood for better luck (I'm guessing you won't spend as much money/you get money depending).
Itchy feet - walk on new ground/a journey. Left foot = bad journey, right foot = good.
Left ear burning? Someone is saying bad things about you. Right ear burning = good things said.
Itchy nose? An argument with someone.
Never walk under ladders, and if a black cat crosses your oath it is good luck. Even better luck to find a black cat sitting on your doorstep - uts meant to signify good wealth.

I always knew itchy nose as you have a surprise coming

I have always had it that if your ears are burning, it is left for love, right for spite!

I always throw a pinch of salt over my left shoulder if I spill any. I was taught to do so by my mum and granny.
butterscotchwhip@reddit
I head the itchy palm one with this rhyme (that doesn’t rhyme!): scratch it on wood, sure to be good; scratch it on brass, sure to be cash

Salute [single] magpies.
If you don't, they can fuck you up.
If you do, they protect you against all the other bad stuff out there, so you don't even have to think about them.
The famous physicist Niels Bohr had a rabbit's foot hung up over his desk. Someone said to him But you are a scientist, how can you believe in the superstition that it brings you luck? Bohr replied: Oh! Oh course I don't believe in it. But they say a rabbit's foot brings you luck whether you believe in it or not
Willsagain2@reddit
But not for the rabbit, obviously.
tmstms@reddit
I even wonder if it has to be a real rabbit.
Willsagain2@reddit
Vegan lucky charms
tmstms@reddit
There are two possibilities.
1) It can be a fake rabbit but the person with the charm has mistakenly to believe it is a real rabbit.
2) The person with the charm knows it is fake.
Placebo charm effect!

My wife still believes in god, that is a biggy.
I don't think I really have any.
beingthehunt@reddit
I know you're just trying to be funny but to be pedantic, belief in God can't be called a superstition, it's just a supernatural belief. Superstitions are specifically beliefs that certain actions have supernatural consequences, so belief that God will answer prayers is a superstition, but belief in the existence of God is not.

I don't like the number 13 to a strange extent.
At the gym if an AMRAP might make me hit failure at 13 I'll stop at 12 as I know it'll ruin my workout if I get to 13 and can't do the extra rep. I play games on occasion and if I have 13 of an item I'll drop one or buy an extra if I notice, similarly if there's anything counting down like an item creation thing I'll look away for when it hits 13.
I've looked at the time before at 13:13 and it's genuinely had a negative impact to my mood for the rest of the day.
No idea what causes this as I have no religious, superstitious or occult beliefs but it's been like this for as long as I remember.

Artistic-Raisin6436@reddit
Aeons ago they were considered powerful numbers, as is anything divisible by 3 🌱
Artistic-Raisin6436@reddit
In ancient times 13 was a lucky number. We used to have 13 months in a year cycle. Everything was done in the rhythm of Mother Nature. We used to have Mushrooms the size of Oak Trees. And Oak Trees the size of Redwoods. I used to have the same dislike, until I looked into a lot of esoteric teachings, many have been banned because they actually tell the truth.

I always make sure I'm not at work during a full moon (nurse&student midwife). I know those shifts will be absolutely manic, and they usually are. If they're not manic, and it's too settled, then you know a big emergency is going to come in.

Absolutely. In any setting where quiet is a blessing you don't say it. I use similes instead. Hope it stays tranquil, peaceful, serene. Never quiet.

Mine is definitely the three drain thing - I've decided that everyone has superstitious activities that affect them but that not all superstitious things affect everyone like I can totally let black cats cross my path or walk under a ladder.
It's only a thing for me because when I was 16 I decided to walk over three lots of three drains to prove it wasn't a thing, ended up throwing up three times (that'll teach me for chugging tizer!) and then getting dumped.
The next time was when I was proving it's a thing to my boyfriend when we went out for a walk, again I did the three lots of three drains thing. By the time we got back from the walk we'd been put into Christmas lockdown, so sorry guys, that one was my fault!

SpasmodicSpasmoid@reddit
I don’t have any superstitions, even swearing on someone’s grave or life is just complete nonsense.
I get why some people are influenced by their superstitions and act them out. Like not walking under ladders or saluting magpies. But I find it ridiculous. Each to their own.
Squiggles87@reddit
I find them fascinating, but I don't follow any.
PigHillJimster@reddit
It's bad luck to be supertitious.
Artistic-Raisin6436@reddit
If I touch something with my left hand, I have to touch it with my right hand. Had this since I was a kid. I also add up car registration numbers. I'm very ritualistic, I perform a small ritual before leaving my home, even if I'm only out for a short time. Wow, I've never written it down before now, I'm cool with it it's who I am & yeah it's alright. Ty OP, sending blessings 🌱
bladefiddler@reddit
I do avoid walking under ladders, though I'm not sure of the superstition it's generally just good practice in avoiding accidents.

takemeawayimdone2@reddit
I’m very superstitious. With a singular magpie, I say the silly rhyme, while saluting it, blow it a kiss and winking. (I look nuts as I do it but I’m covering my bases) itching palm of the hand, no new shoes on table, no walking under a ladder and never walking on 3 drains in a row. Think that’s all my crazy right there
BeardedBaldMan@reddit
I'm quite irrational in terms of the fear of jinxing things.
I don't like ever commenting on how well something is going while it's happening. I didn't realise how much this bothered me until my wife was pregnant.
I found it quite difficult to get into buying equipment, decorating etc. as it felt too much like tempting fate.
