I have to shave my face now.

I spent over 25 years scruffy. I hated shaving. I had beards and stubble and shaggy over growth.
I could do that. It was dark, then for a while there were a few greys, and then it was salt and pepper.
It looked good. It made me look grown up. Sophisticated even. Manly.
But now, it’s just white. I go without shaving a few days, I look like an old man. An old man.
And I hated shaving. It was awful. You foam up and drag a multibladed name brand disposable razor up and down until you were shaved. And you’re left razor burned with a screaming face.
So I learned how to shave. Fat rich cream. Safety razor. Brush and bowl. Good aftershave. Only with the grain of the hair. Shaving more than once is still fewer strokes of the blade across your skin than one swipe with a five bladed gimmick razor.
And you know what? I like it. And my wife likes it.
I might not look so brawny or aggressive. But my wife likes that smooth skin and how aftershave clings to my face. And I like that it’s still sandpaper gruff in half a day, ready to be knifed away again.
I can’t get a 5 o’clock shadow, because it’s all white, plus I really like shaving before I go to bed, but I’m beginning to really enjoy a good shave. It’s revitalizing.
theflush1980@reddit
I dye my beard every 2 weeks or so, it takes about 5 minutes to do so.
I’m also greying, but they are patches of grey, making it look like I have holes in my beard. Once it’s mostly grey I will stop colouring it, because grey beards are cool.
Rumplfrskn@reddit
I shave once a week whether I need it or not

Getting a safety razor was a game changer. Gillette can keep their disposable torture tat
fabrictm@reddit
This. F*ck yeah. I buy feather blades. They're like gd scalpels. The safety razor with cut through a beard like nothing. Forget all the Gillette 5 or 25 (kidding) blade nonsense. A good safety razor with quality blades.
allawd@reddit
Gillette branded blades for safety razors still exist. Gillette Silver Blue are not feather sharp but for me last a lot longer.
jchampagne83@reddit
Yeah I bought a pack of Gillette blades like ten years ago that I’m still working through. I think they were like $20 on Amazon.
BlackZapReply@reddit
Feathers are wicked sharp. German made Wilkinson Sword blades are my personal favorite. Sharp and smooth in my experience.
justwhatever73@reddit
I've used a safety razor for decades now (I'm a 51 year old Gen Xer, sorry for intruding). The disposables, especially the ones with like 20 blades, are a total rip-off. And all those blades make shaving worse not better. You pay a small fortune just to get a crappy shave.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
100%. I had horrible horrible razor burn as a teen using those shitty disposables. Switched to a Merkur DE Safety Razor in my early 20s and never looked back. Have had the same razor for decades, probably will have have it for life.
Wee-BeyandPartlowLLC@reddit
Thanks for this post and thread. TIL. Cause I’ve gotten awful razor burn my whole life. Gonna try a safety razor.
captain_flak@reddit
Be aware that the blades differ greatly. Start off with something sharp but mild like Gillette Silver Blues.
Wee-BeyandPartlowLLC@reddit
Gotcha. Thanks for the heads up.
ReadilyConfused@reddit
Don't forget to shave following hair patterns. Just Google "beard map." Be mindful that your hair growth direction is individual, but there are some general patterns. Shaving with the hair won't get the closet shave, but will reduce irritation.
As someone with thick curly hair, shaving patterns and a safety razor changed my life.
PeaKitchen3187@reddit
100% my story as well.
HedyHarlowe@reddit
Would you recommend a chick use a safety razor than the disposables?
captain_flak@reddit
Definitely. Check out the Leaf. There are other women specific ones too.

BlackZapReply@reddit
What do you think the bombshells of the '30s, '40s and '50s were using?
ReadilyConfused@reddit
Can't say I have any experience, but probably would still be better than those terrible disposablea.
captain_flak@reddit
Amen. I always had so many ingrown hairs in my early 20s. I finally learned how to shave with good kit about 10 years ago. Have never looked back.
geneb0323@reddit
Same story. I used to get horrendous razor burn off of those multi-bladed razors. I switched to a safety razor on a whim 15 or 16 years ago and it immediately went away. I've saved so much money too, at $0.10 per blade versus $5.00 (I nearly had a heart attack when I looked up the price just now) per cartridge.
SpaceLemur34@reddit
I made the switch because I hate shaving, so I tend to let it go until it starts to annoy me. My facial hair grows fairly slowly, so it ends up being about once every week and a half. But that also means it's long enough to clog up those multiblade atrocities. A single blade which I can open up quickly and rinse out saves so much time over trying to get a clump of hair out from between those stupid disposable blades.
DirtyRedytor@reddit
I've had Merkur razors and even a Ralf Aust straight razor. They all cause razor burn because my hair grows in like a crop circle. Philips One Blade is the only thing that works for me..and my kind ain't alone.
vonjoy1980@reddit
Honestly mate, I only started using safety razors when living in china. And that was literally an all plastic handle with a razor blade wedged in it. Really cheap ghetto crap, was still night and day better than any max power 6 bladed whatever-the-f**k disposable from Gillette, Wilkinson sword and the ilk.
fabrictm@reddit
I have Merkur.
OG_Antifa@reddit
God so much this.
Had I discovered safety razors while I was in the Army, I might have continued to shave daily when I got out.
I haven’t had a clean face in over 15 years. Weekly trim along with hair cut (buzz, because balding…), and twice weekly shave to keep neck beard away and to maintain beard edges.
I bought an assorted pack of safety razor blades when I first made the switch 10 years ago, and I’m still on that pack. I think it was around $20 on Amazon.
Why TF anyone spends $40+ on a 6 pack of blades is beyond me. And that’s not even considering the bumps and irritation that comes along with those overpriced, overbladed skin scrapers with pointless “lubricating strip” that lasts exactly 1 shave.
Ain’t nobody got time for that.
vonjoy1980@reddit
Amen.
ipsumdeiamoamasamat@reddit
I still hate shaving. Safety razor or not. Tried the Panasonic OneTouch too, and it doesn’t do anything for me. Shaving is for the birds.
Woodburger@reddit
I wish I could shave. I’ve always preferred not having a beard, especially living in SF and PDX, I look like every other guy but no amount of pre or post care will stop my neck from being hundreds of painful white heads/in grown hairs a day after I shave. So I’m the guy with the long nice looking beard who hates when people compliment me on it.

It's crazy to me that people don't just use electric razors
But I guess I just got lucky in that electric razors never broke me out like they do other people
I only have to use mine on my neck because of my beard...but its a god send to never have to shave with a razor
And I'd rather have a white beard than shave
captain_flak@reddit
I used a Braun for years, but I hated how hot it got. It would also occasionally pull a hair too much and would miss others.
IndianaFartJockey@reddit
I've been using a Braun series 7 for a few years now. Absolutely love it. I could never get the stubble off on my adams apple with a safety razor, and disposable blades were just shit.
I do shave my whole face with it, and I'd rather not ever go back.

I switched to a safety razor in 2010 and after a month-ish of of learning, I never looked back. My daughters love buying aftershave for Father’s Day, and my wife likes her man smelling like a man. It’s kind of wild that how I cut my face-hair off has become a thing the women in the house want to participate in. Upside: I don’t have to buy the pricier stuff if they’re going to do it for me 😁
Miss-Figgy@reddit
Tbh if I had a partner, I'd get him aftershave and other shaving accessories too, lol. I kind of miss how men used to smell back in the day. My dad would put on aftershave and cologne before leaving for work, leaving a trail of scent by the time I'd wake up to get ready for school.
captain_flak@reddit
There are many “barber shop” styled soaps and aftershaves out there. Plenty of ways to update the memories as soap bases have become so much better lately. Or you can go old school.
Ok_Connection2874@reddit
They always say that smell is most closely linked to memory - I buy lime-scented Old Spice because it makes me think of my grandfather (he was my homie when I was a little kid)
fabrictm@reddit
Sandalwood aftershave is what I use. Smells great!

My 7 year old son recently asked me to shave mine. Had a full, nearly black beard when he was born. Started to notice a grey patch in a sideburn. Now it's salt and pepper. Neither of my kids have ever seen my face.

I saw my dad's face for the first time in 5th grade. He had a huge beard to his chest before that. I was terrified. I thought someone had broken into our house and was sitting in my father's chair. His own brother didn't even recognize him at first glance.
pizzle8288@reddit
My dad always had at least a mustache. We were old enough to just laugh at him when he made a trimming mistake and had to shave it off. Poor dude. He never made that mistake again!
mmmtopochico@reddit
heh, my dad had a full beard for the first few years of my life, had it clean shaven BRIEFLY when i was about 4, and once he and my mom split and he moved in with my stepmom, he switched to a stache for the rest of his life.
Not coincidentally, all of my stepmom's favorite actors happened to be the mustachio'd ones. I think he wore the stache for the nookie.

Just do yourself a favor and purchase a nice electric like a Braun. It won't get you 100% smooth as a razor, but it gets close without the mess. I switched because I couldn't shave my neck without causing razor bumps. It was worth it for this and the convenience.
surfingbiscuits@reddit
I absolutely hate shaving, even the brush and safety razor kind. I recently switched to electric and suddenly no more bumps, nicks, or burns. It also does a way better job on my jaw than any razor ever did. I still hate it and I still keep a DSC or a Harry's on hand for cleanup, but electric has been a big quality of life improvement.
The only thing I hate more than shaving is having a beard.
Spartan04@reddit
Second a good electric. I prefer to be cleanshaven but was tired of both the cost and the waste of using a normal razor (so much plastic in those cartridges that just went in the garbage). Got myself a Braun electric and am very happy with it and not having to buy and throw away cartridges anymore.
Like you said it’s not quite as close as a razor but good enough. It’s also waterproof and I’ve found it I want a really close shave for a particular occasion I can do it wet shave with it with shave butter. I don’t do that regularly since shaving dry is more convenient but sometimes.
cap_canuck@reddit
Tell you what, find yourself a vintage restored Gillette adjustable safety razor. Absolute amazing engineering and quality. I have two and use when I trim up my beard lines neck. Keep what blades you like using love how they are all interchangeable.
NickLoner@reddit
I've been shaving my head every day since I was 23 because I went completely gray. I've always kept a beard on my chin because I don't have much of a chin without it. I accidentally shaved it one time and a co-worker said "Where's yo chin dawg?!" and started dying laughing. I never shaved it again lol
I've noticed A LOT of grays coming in recently. Idk which is worse, shaving it and not having a chin or having a gray beard 😅 People think I'm 30-35 because I've done a good job with skin care thus far, but I won't be fooling anyone if my beard goes completely gray, so I guess that's worse lol
AlienDog496@reddit
Nah, this is when you just go Full Wizard. Let the beard grow long, let the eyebrows get wild, leave the ear hair to do what it will.

Man, I was all ready to tell you to look into after reading your first few paragraphs.

Arderis1@reddit
Lady Xennial checking in on behalf of my husband. He's been shaving his head for over 10 years, and started using a traditional safety razor, shave brush, and all that about a year ago.
Absolute game changer on the quality of his shave. No bumps on the back of his neck. No ingrown hairs on the edge of his beard. He enjoys the sort of "ritual" of it all every few days. It's become a self-care thing for him and I'm very happy for it! Reducing the plastic trash and the expense of disposable razors is an added bonus.
More evidence that convenient doesn't equal "better" in a lot of cases.
brotherJT@reddit
Hard relate… except I grew my beard out and dye it once every 2-3 weeks. The hair on my head has yet to significantly grey, but my facial hair is Gandalfesque. With the beard dye, I still look mid thirties even though I’m on the wrong side of my forties. Without the beard dye, I look like I’m going on 50 something…
FindingPepe@reddit
What dye do you use?
Asking for a friend… 🙃
brotherJT@reddit
Just for men beard dye… some guys find it harsh, but it’s ok for me to use once every 2-3 weeks, with a daily beard oil routine. I have black hair, so it’s easy enough to match the beard color. They have dark and light brown colors, but if you’re any other color, might be tough to find something that works right

Sad_Analyst_5209@reddit
Old guy but this is how I shave. Shower first, soap your face and let it sit while you finish and rinse just as you get out. Wet face and work in shaving cream. Use a razor with a five blade cartridge, not a disposable. Gillette works best for me. I get a trickle of hot water flowing and use an old toothbrush to sweep along the blades to keep them from loading up. When done always dry the razor, it will stay sharp longer.
My 33 year old son has your problem and so far he does not shave.

bluemitersaw@reddit
Same. I have a no-nane 3 blade razor in the shower. I wash my face good and let it run under the hot water then suds up with soap and shave. No mirror or anytime fancy. No razor burn. And I tend to have sensitive skin.
ConstructionHefty716@reddit
No I literally meant dry like the water in the shower is to clean my Razor not for my face
eLishus@reddit
This is how I shave my head: in the shower “blind”. I just feel around for spots I may have missed. As for the beard, I don’t bother shaving with a razor. I have a beard trimmer with an adjustable length attachment that I set it to stubble length and trim it down every 1-2 weeks.
peritonlogon@reddit
I was the same, but I went the electric shaver route after surveying the razors on the market. No shaving cream, no mess, takes a little longer, but not much, and it does a fine job.

I taught myself to use a straight razor 12 years ago because I was interested in learning. I did it for a few years before I had kids, and then went back to my electric shaver. But it’s a little ritual I do whenever I have a special event to go to, and it’s such a good shave.
Geechie-Don@reddit
I’m never shaving. 47 and might have 5 translucent hairs in a thick beard. As I age, I’ll keep my regiment; wash 2x per week, a lil oil and balm 2x per day, brush and brush more, hot oil once per week, keep it edged up and neat. Even in my 23 years in the military (coast guard), I did not shave (waiver). The process is simply not kind to the facial hair of most Black men.

42 and have fully embraced the “old man beard”.
Four kids and work have turned my once dark chestnut colored beard to, first salt and pepper, and now almost all salt. I’ll never shave it. I’m secure in my job and my marriage…I have no one to impress, lol.
But yes, if you’re gonna shave, a double edged safety razor is the way to go. Get a nice shave soap (I like Poroso’s Saldalwood), a boar hair brush, and a razor. Yes, it’ll be a $100 investment up front. But it will literally pay for itself in less than a year once you stop wasting money on Gillette 14 blades of plastic bullshit. I think the last time I bought blades, I got a 100 pack for like $9….and I go through maybe 2 blades a month (only shave my neck and touch up my below my eyes)….so that $9 should last about 4 years. Last I checked on razor cartridges, they were about $5/each. Oh, and it is a much cleaner and satisfying shave.

Traditional_Entry183@reddit
Most of my life, I could barely grow any facial hair. What I had were all sparse, and were fine and red like the hair on my head. So I shaved all the time so I didn't look dirty or creepy.
Then at 43, over a very short time, my facial hair drastically changed in texture to thick and coarse, started growing 5x faster, covers a much wider area, and my beard hair turned stark white.
So I can now for the first time grow facial hair, but it also makes me look like an old man.. I totally missed out on the chance to ever just look cool and adult. It skipped me entirely.
solomons-marbles@reddit
Nah, I haven’t shaved my face since ‘97. My neck hasn’t seen a razor in 10+ years (I use clippers once/twice a week). I loathe shaving.
SweetCosmicPope@reddit
I still don't like shaving and I'll only do it maybe once or twice a week, and I'll rock my stubble. It's salt and pepper, but mostly salt at this point. I actually prefer the scruffy look, and my wife revealed a couple of weeks ago that she does too (but does not appreciate me sandpapering her inner thighs with it).
I stopped using the 5-blade razors and moved back to using an electric last year. I wish they still made the ones I used in high school because those actually weren't such a pain and I did shave every day without much hassle. They had a little button you pressed and it would shoot out this little spooge of goop that looked suspiciously like semen and it would make for a nice smooth shave.
Psycle_Sammy@reddit

I have a beard now but when I did shave, shaving against the hair made my skin feel really weird and was rather uncomfortable.

I'm happy to have white in my beard. Definitely at the 'salt and pepper' (with more pepper) stage at this point, but the amount of salt has significantly increased over the past year or so. I'm looking forward to the whole thing being white. I don't mind looking old.
I've had some kind of facial hair (usually a large beard) since high school (although it was pretty patchy back then), so I'm not about to start shaving regularly just because the colour changes.
Ryuujin_13@reddit
Opposite here. I ('79) have had a beard or goatee since I was 15, but always kept it low. 2-days growth kinda low. The moment I started going white I let it grow more. I like having just a bit of stubble. A touch more than 5-o'clock shadow so as to be visible from a distance, but not much more than that. One of the reasons why I don't grow a beard is because whenever I look in the mirror look at my face, it looks like I have more white hairs on one side then I do on the other. Now while I get that I can just dye it, I don't want to. Plus I've tried facial hair in the past...goatee at one point, a mustache at another...and just felt it wasn't me.

My gf won't let me shave my beard off. I look completely different without a beard. She feels like she's cheating on me with me.

I've accepted my beard fate and will embrace the Gandalf look. My face requires a beard.

Did you ever consider dying your beard?
bingbingdingdingding@reddit
I feel like that’s a sure fire way to look older. It’s very noticeable.
gringo1980@reddit
Depends on how it’s done, definitely use the “touch of gray” option, and if you’re white, never every use full black, looks very unnatural on white guys
Significant_Water609@reddit
unless you pick an unnatural color 😂😅

Anyone seen recent pictures of Eminem 😂

Dude, that is who immediate came to mind
triplehelix-@reddit
the key is to go lighter than you might think, and don't go for coverage to get a completely uniform single color. i even leave a few bits of gray, especially by the temples. looks very natural.
kmmccorm@reddit
It’s really not, even Just For Men is surprisingly subtle as long as you pick the right shade. Takes 5 minutes and makes a big difference, if that’s something someone cares about.

Unless you just aren't noticing the ones that did a good job of it

I just started shaving as well due to the whiteness of my beard. I have no idea what a safety razor is.
lsp2005@reddit
Tend skin. It is a blue bottle. If you get razor burn this really helps.
GMane2G@reddit
I might get trashed for this but I just can’t accept the graying of my beard. Some wrinkles, knee problems, parents passing I’ve accepted, but this one I’m hanging onto until the day I don’t. It gives me confidence which translates to some increased happiness, so I feel it’s worth it.

I used to do full beard for years til covid and I had to wear a mask that looked like a 70s bikini.
If I shave I barely look 30 til you notice my eyes. If I let it go white I look like 55. So I dye my beard about every two week with touch of gray and keep it mostly trimmed. Admittedly a short beard dyed is still less work than when I tried to keep in oiled, balmed and brushed well at al quaida length

Well put. Solid place to pitch the fine group at r/wetshaving and the artisans that make quality shaving soap, skin products and hardware.

My ginger beard turned white in my late 30s. My wifey likes it and does not allow me to shave. I'm fortunate as I prefer being the old man with a young looking wife. That is until someone thinks my 8 year old is my granddaughter

A game changer for me was a few years ago I ran out of shaving cream and wound up using some Aveeno lotion as both a shaving cream and aftershave. I have sensitive skin and it really helps.
It was a total accident, but it wound up feeling great, so I’ve stuck with it since.
TwistingEcho@reddit
Mate, straight razor or if you have to, safety razor. So stupidly much cheaper and amazing for sensitive skin. In the past I used the Mach75 battery operated Gillette mega-scented gamer and the most wanky sensitive skin gel followed by skin conditioner to stop the burn. Now I crack a blade in half, slap the cheapest lather I can find on my face and whip up a great fast shave in no time with no razor burn.

Forget that foamy shaving cream. That's for kids. Use something like Kiehl's it will literally change your life.
Personally I also started shaving in the shower, so much easier and less messy than doing it over a sink. But I use a 3 blade, IDK if you can shave without a mirror using a safety razor.
MetaMetatron@reddit
You can, you just have to be very careful, lol
oniaddict@reddit
There is a bit of a learning process with a safety razor. Each razor handle can act differently and through trial and error you learn what type/manufacturer of blade works best for each handle and your skin. I recommend getting a sample pack of blades and experimenting.
TopRedacted@reddit
I've never liked having a beard. I did it during covid because my new wife thought it would look good. That wad the only time didn't shave daily.
Erik500red@reddit
I got tired of paying 5 bucks a blade back around 2010, and switched to a safety razor. After about 10 years I went back to disposables and prefer them
