Vietnam Special

I remember watching it for the first time and when they (Wilman) unveiled the USA bike, Bruce Springsteen's Born in the USA played. But now on Prime, it's changed to the national anthem......Wonder why?

Woke shit

UK song rights. Also, Top Gear had some absolutely amazing music in the old days because the BBC could use almost any song under the sun.
TAckhouse1@reddit
I was going to say, didn't the BBC had some special exception where they could use almost any music royalty free?

It was so weird to hear music from LOTR being used
CharlieH_@reddit
And the Dark Knight theme!
Little-Woo@reddit
They also used the Inception music during the car chase in Albania
PeanutHour99@reddit
It’s still there on BBC iPlayer

You will hear this repeatedly throughout the series unless you're watching on the Google doc. With various songs and scores.
I_Tell_Penis_jokes@reddit
How 'bout sharing that Google doc...
snowmunkey@reddit
I need to know where that Google doc is so I know to avoid it, that's terrible
Beahner@reddit
How about a quick search on this sub for Google Drive…..links been posted many times.
Easy to find and much quicker than waiting for someone to maybe do it for you….

They did a rattle comparison in the Cheap BL cars in series 10 to Pink Floyd’s “Money” that sounded great, the updated version is an absolute mess in comparison
Polyphemic_N@reddit
HBO prime has done this to the earlier seasons of The Deadliest Catch; The Bon Jovi song "Dead or Alive" is only heard in small sound bytes, and the lyrics are absent.
codec3@reddit
Springsteen, his mom sic is still on the dvd version.
Docman427@reddit
I know it's a music rights thing. But the reveal does not hit as hard without Born in the USA, due to what that song is really about.
chadder_b@reddit
I’ve only known that special to be playing the Anthem. I only read about it (maybe on this sub) that it was Springsteen’s song originally.
freeski919@reddit
They probably only had rights to the Springsteen song for a limited time. Now the rights have expired, so they reverted to a public domain song like the Star Spangled Banner.
TSMKFail@reddit
Naa it's because the licences only cover the UK. BBC iPlayer currently has all episodes on it here and the og music is still there.
BlueBloodLive@reddit
Do they just edit out the part where Jeremy is reciting the lyrics as well?
Taeles@reddit
Copyright. Its why most of the A-Team music during builds is also gone on amazon

When you license a song to play on BBC Radio it includes the clause that it can be used in any BBC broadcast, an old requirement from when BBC first branched into TV.
The international releases then usually strip it out.
That's why TG had such awesome soundtracks, GT on the other hand has way less recognisable music in it. Apart from Brothers in Arms where they probably just threw the budget out the window

My understanding is that this comes down to "performing rights organisations" (PROs). They're the orgs that handle licensing music for stuff like this.
In the UK, we have only one, the PRS, and the BBC pay them a flat-rate fee - but this covers them as a broadcaster, not a producer. So instead of licencing the songs, they're paying a flat-rate to broadcast them (in the UK). This distinction is important because it even comes up when BBC licence shows to BBC Worldwide.
So if they licence the show to someone else who also has a flat-rate licence from PRS, then no problem. The problem is licencing it either to broadcasters who don't have a flat-rate licence (like Dave) so would have to pay a per-performance royalty, or to regions that aren't represented by the PRS (eg ASCAP, BMI and SESAC in the US).
So you get three options. One is to go through and ensure every single song used is represented by a PRO that you already have a flat-rate agreement with. Two is to pay per-performance royalties. Three is to replace it all with something royalty-free - performances you've commissioned, you own the rights to, or you can licence much cheaper.
Streaming further complicates this because you'd need to do the same for every region it's going to be available to. So armed with a licence from PRS and a licence from ASCAP, you're covered for .. two countries out of almost 200. These PROs can't licence you worldwide rights because they don't have worldwide rights to licence.

The Dark Knight music while Jeremy was struggling with his bock of flats car
NFGaming46@reddit
The star wars music when they see all the better cars than theirs at the Silverstone britcar race 😂
BinkoTheViking@reddit
I remember Jeremy doing a road test and distinctly hearing the music from the Splinter Cell game…
TheFlaccidChode@reddit
If you can watch it on BBC iPlayer it's still Springsteen, must be a Netflix license issue
bucky-plank-chest@reddit
You need to pirate it for the original. So much music is changed that it absolutely ruins the beauty of a lot of the production. I can't watch the re-scorede episodes. Music is such a large part of it
Benny303@reddit
I've been watching that special for over a decade on Netflix, prime, TV. It's always been the national anthem.
HoldingOnOne@reddit
When that episode originally aired it was ‘Born in the USA’, and on BBC iPlayer it still is. When Jeremy presses ‘Play’ on the speakers that Andy Wilman is holding, he says “That’s Born in the USA, evidently…”
The_Rolling_Gherkin@reddit
Yep, iPlayer has all the old music as far as I am aware. The most noticeable one I always saw was in repeats on Dave, were when they 'cue the music' and they had some generic music that sounded vaguely like the A-Team theme rather than the actual A-team theme. I assume the same is the case for international releases/streams and broadcasts outside of the BBC.
Over_Recording_3979@reddit
Yeah I noticed that, the scene was way funnier with Bruce, especially as a couple times Hammond says something like "Bruce Beckons", plus it's just a loud belter of a song that breaks the tranquility of the scenery, which was what made it funny
snart-fiffer@reddit
Cuz Bruce is expensive as hell
QF_Dan@reddit
they didn't renew the rights to the song, it's the same with the Truck Challenge where they replaced Highway To Hell with some generic music
blackmilksociety@reddit
Yeah I’ve brought this up over the years. There are a couple songs that have been switched out. It was way better with the origins tracks but it’s still my favorite special. About a month ago someone posted a link to all the old Top Gear episodes. The quality wasn’t top notch but it had the original Vietnam special and it was refreshing to watch
Kurtman68@reddit
I just watched it on Freevee and pretty sure I heard The Boss.
tissot2000@reddit
They replaced loads of music in TG with generic music for licensing purposes.
weirdoldhobo1978@reddit
Yeah they had to strip a ton of popular music out when they exported the show to the US because their original licenses only covered the UK.
When it hit streaming they were able to put a lot of it back in.
weirdoldhobo1978@reddit
Springsteen's licensing rights go for top dollar.
Bernie265@reddit
It’s about the song rights. I’ve noticed it in other episodes where the music has been changed or they just blatantly cut the audio. Noticed the blatantly cut more while watching on Samsung TV+ Top Gear Channel.
