So my dad has had this gunfor 30+ years, and we're trying to identify where it's from/when it was made. Could y'all help? š

If you ask the Secret Service it's an Ak-47
Important-Rooster-28@reddit
This is THE answer lmao
gagemoney@reddit
I just spit out my soda pop
Civil-Software-7270@reddit
You mean The ATF, or a Democrap.
General_Tsao_Knee_Ma@reddit
It is. The Chinese version of the ak-47 was called the type 56 and if you look at the third picture, you can see "äŗå å¼" stamped on the receiver, which is how "type 56" is written in Chinese.
ComicallyLargeAfrica@reddit
Idk if this is a joke but they also designated their SKS as the Type 56.
Able_Twist_2100@reddit
He's a fed.
RockSteady65@reddit
A fed or a fudd?
Happy_Garand@reddit
Por que no los dos?
Swimming-Comedian500@reddit
A fed is always a fudd, but a fudd isnt always a fed. š¤
Fluffy-Map-5998@reddit
they also had multiple other weapons also called the type 86
moving0target@reddit
Don't bother asking the AP.
antariusz@reddit

Tokena@reddit
This provoked a full hearted laugh from me.
Dirty-Dishes1812@reddit
Don't tell the secret service you have this. They'll say it's an AK
UnitCell@reddit
Chinese SKS. Many were imported. He likely got this for around USD 100 or less in the 90ies. Worth around USD 500 now. Good rifles. Hang on to it.
clanga-man@reddit
$500!?
In those days, you could get ChiCom SKSs for $70, gun oil and cleaning equipment for $30, and the other $400 was spent on a literal crate of ammunition, still loaded in the original paper boxes with mandarin, loose in boxes for 12.7mm, or even in the old Soviet spam tins with Cyrillic characters all over it!
You could hunt deer well past the end of days with that much ammo!
wtfredditacct@reddit
If it's a numbers matching type 56 with bayonet (which it looks like it probably is), we're talking $600-$900 depending on condition.
spezeditedcomments@reddit
Damn, didn't realize they were that high
wtfredditacct@reddit
It's obscene how expensive they are
Montananarchist@reddit
Indeed. I remember the local sporting goods store having a barrel of them in cosmoline for $29.99 each
PoundHerSweetly@reddit
I remember my dad buying these by the crate around 1994 for like $40-50 a piece. I think we had 30 of them at one point. Iāll never forget trying to clean them up and then shooting them and they just kept sweating cosmoline.
Flat-Wall-3605@reddit
I used to hate those damn things. Worked a gun store all during high school and a few years afterward. My boss would buy them by the crate and I had to clean them all. I may possibly still sweat cosmoline
CapitalAd7641@reddit
We took them to the car wash and used engine degreaser and high pressure
BadgersHoneyPot@reddit
Sounds like when my dad got one but his (mine now) is a Tula.
slav_superstar@reddit
29.99 is bonkers. My m8 bough a soviet all matching 5 1954ish SKS a few years back for about 220ā¬. Now they are going for over 600ā¬. Similarly to my M70AB2. Got mine for 680ish new in cosmoline. Now they are going used for double that
BeenisHat@reddit
Mosins in good shape are just as bad. I recently sold my matching M44 for $450.
Bought is in the early 2000s for $100.
mgmorden@reddit
With milsurps these days its best to always assume "they've gone up" if you haven't priced them within the last 6 months.
I bought a Yugo SKS in the early 00's for $89, eventually sold it for $300 - regretted it and ended up buying a Chinese one for $375, but the Chinese one isn't in as good condition as my Yugo was :(.
LowVacation6622@reddit
Same. Wish I would have kept mine.
killermoose25@reddit
Way more then 500 even if the numbers don't match, Yugos are going for 600+ now, Russian are over 1k. Sks prices have gone crazy.
Cornage626@reddit
No idea where people still see sks' for 500
wildo83@reddit
I remember trading two RROD Xbox 360s for oneā¦. (Yes the buyer knew, and I showed them)
Sometimes I regret getting rid of it..
Itchy_Bluejay4452@reddit

wildo83@reddit
The who?
DNCOrGoFuckYourself@reddit
Armslist occasionally has a few diamonds in the rough, non bubba fucked SKSā for 500 or less.
Regular-Calendar-581@reddit
right now they have a norinco sks for 480$, actually doesnāt look to beat up either
GlawkFawtyFive@reddit
I got mine on the AKFiles for $550, milsurps are pretty hard to move right now so keep an eye out
halo45601@reddit
A boomer at a gun show near me was selling a rustry beat up Norinco for $550 lol
Xdtrl17@reddit
They were $800 at some shows near me.
Made my day when a group of old guys just sat there and heckled the seller the entire show.
VladimirSteel@reddit
https://www.reddit.com/r/gundeals/s/Y71YRlDasq
These aren't great, but they still have them for $399
fieldy213@reddit
That's a good deal and if I didn't already have one, I'd swoop one up. They look like factory 26 type 56 surplus sks
Able_Twist_2100@reddit
I picked up a yugo from centerfire within the past couple months for $300, no bayonet lug, threads, or grenade sight, but a $300 for a good condition sks in this decade isn't something you get to be picky about.
UnitCell@reddit
Granted OP would likely get much more for theirs, but here for example: https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/rifles/sks-rifles.c363_p1_o3.cfm
WeOwnThe_Night@reddit
I used to see these for $75 at my LGS. Around holidays they would go on sale for $69.99. They were packed is cosmoline and we would spend hours cleaning them and removing all the cosmoline using mineral spirits.
UnitCell@reddit
I, too, remember the good ole' days of low price USSR stock milsurp. Don't have very fond memories of the cosmoline removal parties, though. Was a dumb dumb and let the magazine bottom plate of a PSL-54 jump into my eye. Had to have surgery and that eye gives me cloudy vision to this day.
Always wear eye pro, kids!
Prudent-Moment6608@reddit
1958, factory 0144 according to this link.

Glockisthebest@reddit

HaasMe@reddit
Get your eyes checked, this definitely an Arisaka. You can by how it is.
sandmansleepy@reddit
It is an honorary arisaka, as it is a gun proffered for identification.
nightstryke@reddit
Chinese Type 56 SKS, fairly common if he's had it for 30 years then probably the 90s or later Import, they're fairly common.

Daniel_Day_Hubris@reddit
Chinese SKS. Dad bought two for about $150 total around 1991.
omfgtimmy@reddit
Didn't see anyone mention this but it was made in 1979 if I'm reading the serial right, first 2 being the date code 1955+24
Ill_Individual_393@reddit
Don't mount an optic on that pic rail. Won't hold zero for sh!t. Cool it takes a mag though.
TimeShareOnMars@reddit
Chinese SKS. Probably made 30 years ago when your dad bought it (likely some time before he bought it).
MikeRyanMurphy@reddit
Japan I believe
StayStrong888@reddit
Type 56 Chinese SKS with spike bayonet. Probably bought it in the 80s when century arms were bringing them in by the crateful and selling them for $50 each.
Look for the dot matrix punch marks from C.I.A. and forced match serial numbers.
hardman50@reddit
I miss the old days, I bought the carbines at Roses, department stores that I think are about all gone, for $89. India Enfieldās in .308 and .303 for $55. After the importation ban they suddenly became the rifle to have.
StayStrong888@reddit
We had a store called FedOrd (Federal Ordnance) that was the place to go.
They converted a warehouse and just had crates of these SKS for $50 and AK47 for $100 stacked up against the wall. You buy the whole thing, wooden crate and all.
AR15 military metal 30rd mags were just filled to the top in 55 gallon drums, grab however many you want, $5/each.
Colt AR15 of all types, including HBar, Delta, A2, etc., hanging on the wall, around $600-700/ea.
Good times...
intrepidone66@reddit
Chinese SKS.
Crashkt90@reddit
I shouldov bought one instead of a mosin fuck me
GloriousLegionnaire@reddit
Itās most likely a Norinco SKS. Chinese. Thereās tens of thousands of these floating around.
Charming-Ad-1641@reddit
Chinese SKS, when the Russian started using the AK-47 they sold the SKS blue prints to many third world countries back then.

I remember buying them still wrapped and coated with cosmoline for for $80.00 all day in 1994š They were displayed standing barrel down in an oil drum. No unwrapping to inspect. "they's all the same anyhow"

Chinese SKS.

Express-Story8920@reddit
Commercial sks not military kind. I have a factory 0147 code sks that I got for cheap recently and trying to fix. Some of the parts are different on these over the military ones like the disconnector as I just found out an hour ago.
1BAVET@reddit
I haven't noticed yet on mine, thanks and will give me something to do this weekend. Picked it up in a trade a couple of months ago so far just took to the range once put around 100 rds through it. Had one in the early 90's paid about $100 for had to sell it. Been on the want list ever since and could not believe how much they have gone up in price.
OP the wood look in great shape definately not military issue but a great rifle. Dont sell it you'll regret it later if you do
Dizzy-Comfortable573@reddit
I donāt think anyone has pointed it out so far, but it seems you are missing the 10rd factory magazine. You can find one on eBay for give or take $100 if he doesnāt have it stored somewhere.
But yes this is a great example of a Chinese SKS. Definitely hold onto it as theyāre accruing in value quickly.
HiveTool@reddit
I have a Tula 1951 sks I was hoping this was gonna be another Ruski one
Witty_Ad4494@reddit
Paid $75 for my first one. Crate of ammo cost more. Good shooting rifles for what they are. Actually killed a white tail with mine after commercial soft point ammo became available.
whitecholklet@reddit
Some sds or sks clone. Decent piece, cheap n durable
unlock0@reddit
30 years ago the SKS would find you before you'd look for a SKS.
Letsgobrandon104@reddit
Let's see the bottom was it converted to take ak mags? I have one from the early 90's and i love it. One of my first riffles
KillerSwiller@reddit
Chinese Type 56 SKS.
Next-Investment-9434@reddit
Way back, you could get an SKS and a tuna can of ammo at any gun show for 100 bucks. Of course, you could get a H&K registered auto sear for 125 + stamp. My local dealer had a jar full of lightning links he got one free with a certain amount of purchases from a distributer. He would GIVE you for free with the purchase of a AR15 but once folks found out they had to pay 200 bucks for the stamp, nobody wanted them!
If I had only known..
Science-Compliance@reddit
If you beat it up a bit, try to Bubba in a 30 round mag, duct tape a scope to the top, and hang out in the bushes on a Florida golf course with it, you could get an all-expense paid, chauffeured trip to a premier government facility.
Possible_Visit_9551@reddit
Wow, most definitely not an Arisaka this time. Type 56 carbine. Chinese on the third picture is äŗå å¼ļ¼which means ātype/model 56ā. Very cool piece

Like others have said. Itās a Chinese SKS. I would hold on to that. Itās in VERY good condition.
number__ten@reddit
Chinese SKS. Looks to be in pretty nice shape too.
Even if you've shot AKs before you really should take it out and shoot it. SKS are a bit heavier and have a longer barrel so they tend to be a bit gentler to shoot and are a little more accurate. I have the yugo version and it's one of my favorite rifles to take to the range.
AdministrativeLie934@reddit
This is the nicest Chicom Norinco SKS I have laid my eyes on ever. Keep it.
