Which Interstate is the worst to drive on?
Posted by Maxpowr9@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 294 comments
In terms of traffic throughout its entirety, I think 95 is the worst of the bunch.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I-95 between Bronx and New Haven at rush hour fucking sucks.
The 405 is LA SUCKS.
I-4 in Florida SUCKS.
I-285 around Atlanta SUCKS.
I-635 in Dallas at rush hour SUCKS.
I-80 in Wyoming during winter SUCKS.
bubbajones5963@reddit
What about I94 in north Dakota
DropTopEWop@reddit
The most boring fucking drive
bubbajones5963@reddit
Straight up nothing all damn day, or absolutely suicidal to attempt it depending on the day
justonemom14@reddit
Came here to say I-635 in Dallas. I was on it earlier today and my exit was unexpectedly blocked because of the construction that has been going on for MORE THAN 4 YEARS. We're talking about a construction project that has its own Facebook account. It's extreme.
swallowedbydejection@reddit
No I-70? Damn my buddy is a truck driver and he HATES going through 70
DropTopEWop@reddit
Depends on what part
TheMuggleBornWizard@reddit
I've been on or lived near all of these except I-80 in Wyoming and I thought the exact same thing. Dallas and Atlanta were top of the list. 95 in NY is trash. It's really kind of trash from NY all the way to Florida TBH in my experience.
DropTopEWop@reddit
95 in the Summer with all the people traveling back and forth from the NE & Florida is tough. Drive at night.
No-Entertainment242@reddit
You forgot, I-5 from Seattle to Portland especially in the rain.
iampatmanbeyond@reddit
In the rain right before morning formation at Lewis
NoAnnual3259@reddit
I-5 in Oregon and Washington outside the major metros has the worst left lane slowpokes going 60 mph in a 65 or 70 zone, oblivious to all the people passing them on the right.
amcjkelly@reddit
Or the Jersey Turnpike in the rain.
amcjkelly@reddit
91 between Hartford and points south isn't that much fun.
lindz2205@reddit
I-635 in Dallas at anytime is a nightmare, I've been stuck on it for hours just trying to go a mile away at 2am.
Phyrnosoma@reddit
635 is my daily commute. Fuck that road
NastyNate4@reddit
I-4 in Florida where doing 80 in the right lane means you may get rear ended.
revanisthesith@reddit
"The War on I-4" is the name of the rivalry game between the University of South Florida (in Tampa) and the University of Central Florida (in Orlando).
It's also a good name for the daily traffic situation there.
Crasino_Hunk@reddit
This is not hyperbole either. Legit the most bat shit crazy highway I’ve ever driven (Tampa to Orlando and back with regular frequency for a few years).
imbrickedup_@reddit
Yeah and then you cross into Georgia going that speed and get a 600 dollar ticket despite everyone else going that speed (yes I’m still mad)
misterlakatos@reddit
I really hate driving between the Bronx and New Haven on I-95 pretty much anytime. It's the worst part about driving up to New England.
Yesitmatches@reddit
What about I-70 through the Rockies, it's amazingly beautiful but so awful... granted, you did list 8+ lane parking lots for all but your last one.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I dont even go across I-70 in the Summer. Too many steep mountains! Also, no reason too if I'm going to Utah. I-80 is faster.
Yesitmatches@reddit
Yeah, you can literally hit SLC on I-80, and then just shoot down I-15 for St. George, let same-day or local overnight haulers handle everything else.
blackhawk905@reddit
As much as 285 around Atlanta sucks it is better than taking 75 or 85 and the connector through downtown
jurassicbond@reddit
85 north of 285 is often worse than even driving through the city
G00dSh0tJans0n@reddit
I remember trying to make it through Atlanta years back after that fire damaged and shut down I-85. Even more of a nightmare than usual.
DropTopEWop@reddit
True!
shits-n-gigs@reddit
I've seen so many flipped trucks in Wyoming. There's just nothing but wind.
DropTopEWop@reddit
Yea you gotta these little windows to drive through there IF the state even opens the highway.
tlonreddit@reddit
I second the motion that the Perimeter sucks
FARTBOSS420@reddit
Yeah. r/Truckers is probably the best place to ask this.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
The worst I drive on regularly is I-5, just because the drive between northern and southern california is so fucking boring. The last time I did the drive I took 101, which takes an hour longer but is so much more interesting, it's worth it.
Hell is probably driving Highway 5, looking off in the distance for the Grapevine for eternity, and you never see it. It's just infinite Kern County.
Osric250@reddit
The I-70 drive between Denver and Kansas City is the same. It's a 10 hour drive where there is absolutely nothing to see. It's just flat corn fields on either side and if you're more than an hour away from Denver you don't even have sight of the mountains anymore.
iHasMagyk@reddit
I did that one this summer as part of driving from SC to Vail and back. Holy shit I wasn’t tired but I felt like I… wasn’t awake if that makes sense. I don’t remember a single part of it except some random town that had halved its population since 1960 and most of the gas stations didn’t have anything above 87 octane. It felt like I hadn’t gone anywhere and half of a 28 hour drive is done
bubbajones5963@reddit
Normal Nebraskan experience
Osric250@reddit
Highway hypnosis is a very real problem on roads like that. There's nothing to really stimulate the brain at all and if you don't keep on guard against that it's easy to fall into real issues.
Stobley_meow@reddit
I - 80 through Iowa is the same but with rolling hills.
FlyUnder_TheRadar@reddit
Eh, there are chunks of I-80 through Iowa that feel like you are driving through a Windows screen saver. It can be very picturesque in spots.
TradeOk9210@reddit
I think it is pretty
whip_lash_2@reddit
I didn’t think anything could dip below Fort Worth to El Paso on 10 and 20, but 70 delivers.
DoinIt989@reddit
Lmfao, try driving I-70 or I-80 through Kansas or Nebraska.
Drew707@reddit
It's pretty much the same thing aside from you get Sacramento in the middle.
pirawalla22@reddit
I-5 has so many horrendous stretches.....The drive between Seattle and Portland, the drive through downtown Portland, the drive across the Oregon-California border, the whole awful boring stretch between Redding and Sacramento and again from Sacramento to Bakersfield, the grapevine, the part that goes through LA.... it's a really difficult road.
bowling_nun@reddit
Always take the 101...
ColossusOfChoads@reddit
What if you're going to Modesto?
mrtsapostle@reddit
God help you
OpportunityGold4597@reddit
The I-5 between Eugene and Portland is also really boring. Very similar to the I-5 in the Central Valley.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
I totally believe you but I just mapped it and it's only 1 hour and 45 minutes. just a blink of an eye in comparison!
OpportunityGold4597@reddit
Yeah, but it feels MUCH longer than that. Literally nothing to see except grass and the occasional sheep.
vintage2019@reddit
At least there’s grass. I-5 from LA to the Bay barely has that
eugenesbluegenes@reddit
More trees to look at in the Willamette Valley though.
McFlyOUTATIME@reddit
Hey! I live directly in the middle of there, and… you’re absolutely right.
Reasonable_Guess_175@reddit
There’s a short stretch of I-5 going over the Colombia River between Oregon and Washington that is only a few lane and backs up like crazy during rush hour. Not on my personal commute, but it can seriously add 2 hours to a drive that takes closer to 30 or even 20 minutes without traffic.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I take 99. Atleast there's shit to look at ya know.
McFlyOUTATIME@reddit
This guy drives.
DropTopEWop@reddit
Very familiar.
yabbobay@reddit
So much of US driving is boring.
Mine was I 80 from Chicago to Des Moines. Soy beans on one side, corn on the other.
stirwhip@reddit
The grapevine itself is quite beautiful right now though, unusually lush after a couple of wet winters.
WarrenMulaney@reddit
To be fair I-5 wasn’t built to be scenic. It’s pretty nice that you can take one freeway from the Mexican border to the Canadian border and never have to change routes.
anneofgraygardens@reddit
yes but it's still interminable.
the_owl_syndicate@reddit
I-10 between El Paso and Tuscon. Nothing and I do mean nothing. I got excited every time I saw a car. I think it happened twice.
Aquatic_Platinum78@reddit
And construction is never fully finished.
ferrisbuellerymh@reddit
80 is truck chess the whole way
nasadowsk@reddit
PA is the worst for it. I-80 needs to be three lanes. Nothing worse than 10 miles of two truckers playing "my 65 mph governed truck is faster than your 65 mph governed truck!". And they bunch up, so once one moves out of the way, another takes up the challenge.
bubbajones5963@reddit
Nebraska all the way across
gmwdim@reddit
Especially the part in Illinois where it’s 4 lanes and trucks are not allowed in the two leftmost lanes but truckers don’t give a fuck and hog all the lanes.
Rabidschnautzu@reddit
Where I-80 and I-94 combine 😭
Neracca@reddit
695 in Maryland sure freakin' sucks!
BjornAltenburg@reddit
In terms of traffic like shear danger? Either Atlanta or Milwuakee. Milwuakee is the only place we're drivers don't even seem to care for their own lives, people driving stolen Kia like there is literally no tomorrow.
shelwood46@reddit
75 around Detroit, I swear Detroit drivers treat all other cars as NPCs.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I-43 in Milwaukee is nuts
BjornAltenburg@reddit
Oh God ya
ImaTurtle6@reddit
Milwaukee is safer on the freeway. Just don’t want to be on the north side streets because they run red lights and drive 100 mph in a 30.
BjornAltenburg@reddit
I guess having driven from Glendale to Waukesha on a daily basis for about 3 months, the amount of stupidly reckless driving I saw was only comparable to maybe Atlanta from when I drove there.
The low numbers on Burleigh and MLk are a whole other level of horrifying to deal with. I've never seen a person torpedo themselves into a poll like I had a few months ago when working there.
JayFenty@reddit
Miami too
BjornAltenburg@reddit
Why did I forget Miami and most of southern Florida.
Regular_Ad_6362@reddit
The entirety of 95, except for the portion up in Maine it becomes a 75mph zone.
betsyrosstothestage@reddit
😂 you’d get rear ended doing 75mph on 95 in Jersey.
Regular_Ad_6362@reddit
The speed limit isn’t what makes the portion of northern Maine nice. It’s the tranquility, something 95 on New Jersey would never know about.
shelwood46@reddit
Aw, I love that bit of 95N/295S that passes the Grounds for Sculpture around Trenton with the giant heads sculpture, and I've gotten some nice sunset pics at the Scenic Overlook.
nasadowsk@reddit
The NJ Turnpike is one of the nicest highways once you get out of the immediate NYC area. Especially off hours.
Xyzzydude@reddit
That northern Maine stretch of I-95 is sweet
benjpolacek@reddit
Interstate 80 between Omaha and Lincoln NE is crazy. Granted its probably normal in most places.
sammysbud@reddit
Road quality wise, 85 between GA and NC… SC, you should be ashamed of yourselves.
RyouIshtar@reddit
They spent like 10 years working on 385 here in the GSP area XD. But you know, if our crappy roads means cheap gas, then im not gonna be mad
Intrepid_Isopod_1524@reddit
I95 in SC is the worst imo.
404Dawg@reddit
I was gonna say! That road has been under construction since 90s. Like wtf is South Carolina doing? 🤣
hybridck@reddit
SC has the cheapest gas in the country because it has the lowest taxes on it. Usually, gasoline taxes are what pays for the majority of road maintenance, and in SC, it's a case of 'you get what you pay for'
Zaidswith@reddit
85 between ATL and Montgomery might be the best flowing interstate in GA these days.
DropTopEWop@reddit
Georgia is gonna eventually widen 85 all the way to the SC state line but its like...it doesnt matter.
Fellatination@reddit
Why did you settle in Maryland of all places?
sammysbud@reddit
“Baltimore: actually I like it”
(Got offered a job here and I actually like it)
Fellatination@reddit
I'm a Baltimore native who fled to the mountains of.. Maryland. I love hearing people move to where I chose to come from. It's fascinating.
okamzikprosim@reddit
This is the answer I was looking for. South Carolina roads are absolutely ridiculous.
sammysbud@reddit
Hit an out of nowhere pothole the size of my car (a Prius, but still) at 70mph and then fully understood the “Jesus Saves” billboard I saw five seconds later
Building_a_life@reddit
95 turns to crap at the SC border, too.
tsefardayah@reddit
We are.
unintentionalfat@reddit
Uh, whichever ones run through Utah
nvkylebrown@reddit
I'll nominate I-5 through Portland OR. Goes through the middle of downtown, crosses two large rivers, many curves, way way too many on/off ramps, some left-hand exits and with a major freeway intersection in the middle of it...
And it's a road that is still sized for 1965 traffic. Yeah really, 1965, they can't enlarge it because the city is right there. They did a bypass but it's also packed. Only two ways to cross the Columbia, I-5 and 205. No other options within 30 miles.
NoAnnual3259@reddit
Honestly, I’ve always thought that I-5 should just be where 205 is, there’s no reason for people headed to Seattle or Vancouver BC from further south to be driving thorough the middle of city traffic whereas from my commute from NE Portland I have to take I-84 to I-5 to 405 to 26 to get to work. There’s actually would be room to add a lane or two to I-205. The real issue with traffic on I-5 or 205 through Portland is just that Clark County, Washington expanded so much.
nvkylebrown@reddit
Yeah, relabeling the two would make a certain kind of sense, and adjusting the signage to push through traffic to the east side.
At midnight, I-5 is faster. Rush hour, go around.
agsieg@reddit
80/94 in Northwest Indiana. Used to have to drive to visit my parents before they moved. It was more surprising when it wasn’t backed up for miles. Doesn’t matter the time of day. It will snare up at 2 pm on a Thursday because fuck you.
Drgonmite@reddit
Anything going through Atlanta.
Zaidswith@reddit
285 is a wild west no man's land. 20 going to Birmingham is always terrible and backed up. 75 is just bad in general. There's never a downtime anymore. 85 is probably the best flowing one now.
I remember when inside the perimeter was worse than outside. It's always worse outside these days. I still prefer driving that than any of the bullshit around Nashville or 65 between Birmingham and Montgomery.
It's just that the traffic has gotten so bad.
jurassicbond@reddit
In my experience, 85 north of 285 is usually awful.
Zaidswith@reddit
Everything around 285 is awful.
nine_of_swords@reddit
It's crazy that 65's gotten so bad between Bham and the Gump. It's not the cities, it's the rural bit. While nowhere near as bad, Cullman county/south of Decatur on the rural bit between Bham and Hville is getting notably more annoying, too. (That said, those bits aren't in contention for worst)
Zaidswith@reddit
I agree.
Most of mine and everyone else's complaints in this thread are around cities (or the congested NE corridor) but 65 is bad in the rural section. It's absurd.
GreenSkittlez@reddit
20, 65, and 85 are all actively in the process of being widened from 4 to 6 lanes all throughout the Southeast to accommodate all of the explosive increases in truck traffic.
And before some FuckCars brainiac comes in with a “just one more lane bro!!”” joke, there’s a huge difference between expanding urban highways already 6-8 lanes in width vs. rural/suburban highways that are often only 4 lanes (2 lanes in each direction). This results in a “passing truck” problem when one truck tries to pass another at a snail’s pace thereby severely slowing everyone behind them. A third lane in each direction solves this since you can just ban trucks from that lane.
Zaidswith@reddit
Yeah, the interstates should be three. The other problem is anytime there's construction, an accident or some sort of other incident all traffic comes to a halt because there's no extra space to create a free flowing lane. With three you can usually divert to one side or the other.
I can't count the number of times I've been brought to a stop in the middle of nowhere.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I call it the 285 Superspeedway. Absolute NUTS.
Zaidswith@reddit
My favorite is when they've used their fancy digital speed limit signs to lower the limit to something cute like 50 mph like you could even go below 75 without dying.
And what insane police officer would even try to pull you over? They don't want to get out of their car and neither of you would ever manage to merge back into traffic.
Marcudemus@reddit
Funny, that's what 465 around Indianapolis feels like. At least on 294 in Chicago, they don't even pretend to impose a speed limit. 😆
DropTopEWop@reddit
I've never even seen highway patrol out there. Too scared probably. Don't blame them.
Zaidswith@reddit
They park empty cruisers on the lines at the exits when they need people to slow down. It takes about 10 off the top speed.
SteveCastGames@reddit
Funnily enough imo it’s the one that goes around Atlanta that’s the worst. Fuuuuuck the 285. Especially the bit from the 85 to the 20.
I’d drive through Atlanta before taking the 285 easily.
squidwardsdicksucker@reddit
I-84 or I-95 through Connecticut. Always heavy traffic, construction, and trucks. It always seems like driving through CT takes forever
justarandomguy07@reddit
84 sucks. Just 2 lanes each way with slow trucks and slow cars invading both lanes.
Maxpowr9@reddit (OP)
Stamford to the NY border is the worst stretch.
InterPunct@reddit
I've spent my whole life driving from NYC to Boston for every other holiday, for business, etc. As bad as I-95 is, it's no competition for the Merritt.
SpermicidalManiac666@reddit
But when the Merritt is clear (as rare as that is) it’s one of the best.
squidwardsdicksucker@reddit
I’d argue the whole stretch from New Haven to the NY border is pretty trash, but even east of New Haven you can get some pretty bad traffic and it’s overcrowded for a four lane road
Alex_2259@reddit
Driving through that state is the biggest dog shit ever. And then there's that horrible state highway that always has endless road work that never progresses at all.
nasadowsk@reddit
IIRC, there was a time when the entrance ramps to I-95 had permanent signs saying the road was "legally closed". Someone noticed it one day, and the feds got wind of it and asked the stare why a closed road was getting federal highway funding.
The signs came down shortly after...
SkiingAway@reddit
You know it's bad when it's usually faster to opt for the insane slot-car track of Route 15 (Wilbur Cross/Merritt/Hutchinson) instead of the interstate.
For those that haven't had the joy:
50-55mph speed limit, traffic's doing 75 if it's not stopped, 2 narrow lanes with zero shoulder that, and the on/off ramps are outright non-existent in spots (just merge into that from a stop sign with no acceleration space) so you'd better be decisive about what you're doing.
nasadowsk@reddit
And the exits are like 15mph, at best.
CT has the worst highways in all of the northeastern US, hands down.
And don't get gas in Greenwhich, unless you like being followed by the cops from the exit ramp, to the gas station, and back onto the highway. Note that this applies to anyone not from the area. It is do bad, that when I went to a pre-con meeting at their sewer plant, the workers apologized for it before they even said hello. I can't think of a snobbier area in the US...
Different_Ad7655@reddit
No no no no no and that has all been so beautifully resurfaced That's really easy just drove it tonight. I don't know the route number but this heavy traffic that flows from somewhere near Toledo Ohio Gary Indiana going toward Chicago, holy shit. And I am a very seasoned driver plenty of snow in New England plenty of snow plowing in a large rig and that road scared the shit out of me. Here I was in my Subaru surrounded by it seemed like a hundred big big trucks and countless lanes. That was a scary road. I've driven cross country from Southern California all across the south back and forth at least 17 times and that was the only road that really freaked me out
Chaos_Primaris@reddit
real
yabbobay@reddit
I grew up on LI. My dad was from Milford CT. No one ever came to us because NYC and LI traffic. (70s-80s)
Now I don't want to ever drive in CT. I'm relieved when I get to the Bronx!
N661US@reddit
I-84 needs to be three lanes all thru Connecticut.
And I love sitting in miles of traffic at the route 7 exit in Danbury because dumbasses down know how to merge
squarerootofapplepie@reddit
It’s really sucks being from north or east of CT and having to drive all the way through to get literally anywhere outside of New England unless you take 90.
cjheadley@reddit
I-95 through Connecticut should be a form of torture used in interrogations
imuniqueaf@reddit
I've been to like 30 states. Connecticut can definitely suck it.
An_Awesome_Name@reddit
I-84 in CT is the worst stretch of highway I have ever driven.
squidwardsdicksucker@reddit
It’s really bad once you get Hartford and West
Curmudgy@reddit
I-84 is fine north of Hartford, plus it has Rein’s.
MainiacJoe@reddit
I'll go through Albany and take the MA Turnpike to avoid I-84 in CT.
ashsolomon1@reddit
I’m from the Hartford area, it’s part horrible design, part heavy congestion from NY/Boston people going back and forth as well as CT commuters, part the state trying to upkeep the roads but scheduling it at bad timing. It’s all bad
SufficientZucchini21@reddit
It is hell.
Aggressive_Onion_655@reddit
I-35
SEmpls@reddit
I feel like you are going to have a wildly different experience on I-35 depending on where you are on it. For example I-35 through Iowa is a breeze, but if you are in one of the metros where it splits into 35W and 35E as it continues north/south, you're more likely to have a bad experience.
Aggressive_Onion_655@reddit
Fair enough, I’m specifically referring to I35 in Texas and more specifically between Waco and San Antonio. DFW is also a nightmare
lindz2205@reddit
I'd say between DFW and Austin, I've never not experienced major construction on that road.
howdiedoodie66@reddit
Yup that was going to be my choice as well. SATX and ATX are going to merge at some point
Head_Razzmatazz7174@reddit
I 35 is in a constant state of construction. This goes back at least 45 years, as I can remember riding with my mom, my aunt and uncle and a couple of cousins when I was just 14. (I'm 61 now ) We had gone to Love Field to pick up my cousin and his new wife and head back to Waco, and it was nothing but orange barrels until we got to Abbott.
SEmpls@reddit
I see. I-35 in the Twin Cities can get pretty bad too. I remember when the I-35W bridge collapsed during rush hour in Minneapolis. That was bad.
Kind of funny where it ends going Northbound in Duluth. There's just a sign that says "End I-35" very unceremoniously and the road narrows and continues along Lake Superior. Ha.
VoluptuousValeera@reddit
That's true of EVERY interstate. I35 has metro traffic in multiple states, unlike some other people's suggestions. Not arguing it's the worst, just that none of them have traffic throughout.
BannedFromPanera@reddit
I-4 is the single worst one I’ve been on, but the downtown Nashville highway loop (which is 3 interstates) is the lowest rung of hell. Atlanta highways are bad too, but i’ll take them over Nashville every day and twice on Sundays.
Petitels@reddit
I 20 when in Mississippi
DrScarecrow@reddit
And Shreveport
They're finally doing work on the Bossier side or I'd include it, too
QuietObserver75@reddit
I-287 through NYC absolutely sucks.
GuzzyRawks@reddit
Probably the worst of the worst interstates I’ve ever driven on, at least while driving through the Bronx. I was driving home once after work and was stuck on it near the intersection by Hunts Point Ave for about 1.5 to 2 hours. Cross Bronx Expressway is a close 2nd. I avoid both of those areas at all costs.
QuietObserver75@reddit
I mean, anything through NYC is going to be terrible.
000111000000111000@reddit
Schuykill Expressway (I76 in Philly) LIE in New York DC/Baltimore Beltway
Streamjumper@reddit
Whichever one you're on at the moment or the one you drive on the most. Even if you're having a great ride... because that's just a "fluke right now" so "it doesn't count" because "usually this place is just bumper-to-bumper assholes".
Ct-5736-Bladez@reddit
I81 can be a death trap
eatchickendaily@reddit
Amongst the roads I've driven on:
Worst surfacing: I-94 in Michigan Worst traffic: I-75 in Cincinnati
Most hostile: I-270 around Columbus or I-215 in San Bernardino
Most boring: I-70 in Illinois
I avoid driving in very large cities at all costs 😬
Honorable mention: Ontario Highway 401. That monstrosity puts everything in the US to shame
JimBones31@reddit

I-80 across Nebraska and eastern Colorado is an unending purgatory
PenguinTheYeti@reddit
I90 through North Dakota.
NativityCrimeScene@reddit
I-90 goes through South Dakota. It's I-94 that goes through North Dakota.
PenguinTheYeti@reddit
Ah, you are correct, I guess I didn't notice much switching off in Billings
FishingWorth3068@reddit
That is a bleak ass drive
ShelbyDriver@reddit
Not because of traffic but because of the state of the road, I20 in Shreveport. Your vehicle needs to practically be off road ready!
slatz1970@reddit
Also, I 10 in a good portion of Louisiana. Haven't went that way in a while but the condition of that road has always been horrible.
sullivan80@reddit
405 (CA) is the worst I've ever been on in terms of traffic, seemingly round the clock.
44 (MO) and 40 (TN) are terrible in terms of semi truck volume and speeding semis.
davidm2232@reddit
I-88 in central NY has to be the worst for construction. But it makes up for it in lack of traffic
No-Entertainment242@reddit
I-5 from Marysville to Lacy.
JimBeam823@reddit
I-26 between Columbia and Charleston is pretty terrible.
ButtSexington3rd@reddit
95 in Philly is split into the Good Part and the Bad Part. Anything north of the city is the Bad Part. South is smooth sailing as long as the Phillies or Eagles don't have a game.
moneyman74@reddit
If you just go with a 2 number they all are ok...95 around the NYC/Connecticut area is probably the most congested. When you get into 3 digit numbers, almost every metro area has a loop that is clogged at any given time of the day.
mklinger23@reddit
I have driven all through the northeast corridor. DC, Philly, NYC, Boston. I think NYC wins for having a lot of traffic and crazy drivers. But I will say Atlanta is the worst to drive in. It's long, monotonous chunks of 10 lane highway that lasts for hours. NYC at least has some entertainment with the crazy drivers and scenery. So NYC has the "worst" traffic, but Atlanta has the least pleasurable traffic. I haven't been to LA tho so they might win.
nasadowsk@reddit
The Sure-Kill is fun, too. Especially with the variable speed limit signs. 25 to 40 to 30 to 55 in a mile...
wooper346@reddit
I've never been on a more miserable stretch of road than the interstates and highways that follow along the Acela Corridor.
I know every state claims they have the worst drivers, but this is an entire region of bullshit. Almost every driver has main character syndrome and believes the rules simply don't apply to them. Whatever someone could do wrong, they would do: speeding, lane switches with no signal, cutting people off, checking brakes, aggressive honking, using the shoulder to pass when there was no need to, and so on.
I would call myself a defensive driver, but I've never white knuckled to the extent that I did going through there. I hope I never have to do it again, and I pray for those that do every day.
nasadowsk@reddit
Acela Corridor? Never heard that before. Usually just the "Northeast Corridor", or just "The Corridor".
Dealing with traffic there is easy. Don't signal at all. This is doubly important on Long island, where signaling to change lanes ensures the asshole next to you will block.
Yankee_chef_nen@reddit
285 in Atlanta is like real life Mad Max at times.
The worst road surface however is I-85 in South Carolina between the Georgia State Line and Greenville.
RanjuMaric@reddit
Nah, south of Richmond VA to Jacksonville FL is a breeze. North of Richmond though? Trash.
ARatOnATrain@reddit
I-95 between Richmond and Washington in Virginia, especially through Prince William County.
Justin_inc@reddit
Well, I40 sucks in East TN and West NC right now.
EvaisAchu@reddit
I can only speak on what I know.
I-25 through Denver will always be my answer. Jesus christ, its terrible. I will pay to use the toll.
DropTopEWop@reddit
E-470 is where its at for sure.
wormbreath@reddit
I know I’m biased, but Denver drivers are the worst. Zipper merge? Never heard of her. Yield sign? Who cares. Driving slow in the left lane, passing on the shoulder. Just make up your own rules! No one cares! Everyone drives like a jerk. I’ll pay for e470 everyime.
Also I swear it’s always those all black plates driving like maniacs.
EvaisAchu@reddit
In Colorado, I find the following information always correct:
Texas plates camp in the left lane and go 15 miles per hour lower than everyone else
Wyoming plates are little speedsters that don't understand roundabouts or stopping for crosswalks (no offense just an observation living in Fort Collins).
Black Colorado plates are always assholes. They all drive like they own Nissans
Denver drivers will try to kill you every 10 minutes. Always be observant. Red, Blue or Black vehicles specifically (its a really weird pattern, but everytime its one of those colors).
Fossil_Finder88@reddit
Currently living in Wyoming, can confirm roundabouts scare me.
Seriously though, I think the problem with Denver driving is that everyone drives like they live in a small town, but the roads are designed for the city.
EvaisAchu@reddit
I am from a small town and I feel small towners drive better unless they drive a truck. My theory is Denver drivers all have main character syndrome with no idea that anyone else exists. Or they are all perpetually late. Or both.
Fossil_Finder88@reddit
Oh I meant less quality of driving and more style. Perpetually late fits too though
EvaisAchu@reddit
Nah nah nah I got what you were saying. I was specifically talking about the drivers themselves! They all seem to be unaware of people around them. I get almost hit daily by people trying to merge into me. My B for causing confusion!
HarveyMushman72@reddit
These are all affirmative. Roundabouts are a novelty up here. There are only a handful of them. Most don't understand them.
AnotherPint@reddit
I-65 in Indiana is just terrible: narrow, fast, choked with trucks, regular speed traps, pavement cratered and crumbling, Jesus is Real signs everywhere.
marklikeadawg@reddit
I-5 through southern California. It was horrible in the 80s. I can't imagine how bad it is now.
ColossusOfChoads@reddit
I-70 through southern IL and IN.
Man that was boring. And then Ohio. I'd never seen so many leafy trees, but you can't see over them and you can't see through them. It was like the Death Star trench run.
alfrednugent@reddit
71 through south Kansas City after a big night like after a super bowl win or just a nice night when everyone is drunk driving racing home or whatever in challengers and chargers
_pamelab@reddit
I-40 between Memphis and Little Rock. I take the frontage road as long as I can.
-AznNinja-@reddit
Don’t forget the state troopers camping on both sides of I-40 to pull over out of state cars
DropTopEWop@reddit
How Arkansas hasn't widened it to three lanes each way is criminal.
paxcolt@reddit
Scrolled way too far to find this.
Guy2700@reddit
I-77 through Charlotte
InitialKoala@reddit
I-17 in Arizona. It's a short stretch that runs only between Flagstaff and Phoenix. It's such a hilly drive that traffic goes up and down extreme elevations, from saguaro to pine trees, and it can get narrow at some spots. Because of that, accidents are fairly common, and there aren't many alternatives since traffic is essentially running through mountains. Worse when hitting delays at lower elevation. And it doesn't help when there's construction, which I'm not sure will improve once completed. It's kind of a dangerous drive.
MaddVentures_YT@reddit
5 and 405 in SoCal specifically
DonkeyKong694NE1@reddit
95 between Boston and DC
RunningFromPBS@reddit
880 in the Bay Area. No rules at all at breakneck speeds. Countless people will do 95-100 weaving in and out. If you can deal with 880 you can deal with anything.
sanka@reddit
I-80 through most of Nebraska and eastern CO.
MoreCowsThanPeople@reddit
Is it worse than the section of highway between Reno and SLC?
DropTopEWop@reddit
I-94 between Fargo and Billings.
MoreCowsThanPeople@reddit
Wish me luck. I'm actually going to be driving there tomorrow.
DropTopEWop@reddit
Get plenty of sleep because you dont wanna fall asleep driving that stretch at all. BORING.
PFunk_Redds@reddit
If you're trying to merge from 35W S to 94 W in Minneapolis, you are taking a large part of the freeway traffic of people entering the city and funneling them onto a 1 lane exit, and then straight into a tunnel. The entirety of 35W S then proceeds to get backed up all the way until the end of the tunnel, because of people trying to cheat their way to the front of the mass of people merging into one exit, and the other group of people deciding not to wait and getting out and continuing on 35W. I have spent 35 minutes to travel 3 miles in that section, and sometimes at seemingly random times (2PM on a Sunday???)
Rabidschnautzu@reddit
None of the roads from Ohio would make this list... But I swear to God, I-75 through Dayton has been under construction my whole life.
External_Class_9456@reddit
Any interstate running through Atlanta
Zaidswith@reddit
Well they merge into one in Atlanta. That's part of the problem they tried to fix with the bypass (of hell aka 285).
I don't know why someone thought 75 and 85 should merge together, but that was a choice.
yosefsbeard@reddit
I-24 and I-75 has standstill traffic almost daily through Chattanooga, Tn
Zaidswith@reddit
I really appreciate how the mountains really make you alert though on 75 in TN.
I might die, but it's not boring.
DropTopEWop@reddit
I-287 in Jersey sucks too. Good lord.
the_owl_syndicate@reddit
I-10 through west Texas, southern New Mexico and into Arizona. At least the speed limit is 75+ so you get through it quickly, but at the same time, there's nothing to look at except an occasional sign that either says "Have you seen the THING??" and "This is a federal penitentiary area, do not stop for hitchhikers."
(The THING in Arizona is surprisingly good, 5/5 recommend. Not so much the penitentiary.)
DropTopEWop@reddit
"Dust storm area" "Pull over, lights off, foot off the brake"
DrBlankslate@reddit
You've never been on I-5, I see.
McFlyOUTATIME@reddit
I find it funny that the top comment is in Connecticut. I’m sure the traffic is horrendous, but it’s got to take such a ridiculously short period of time compared to driving I-5 through California. Sometimes gridlock isn’t the worst thing on the freeway. Sometimes it’s the sheer distance.
quirkney@reddit
For now, I’m pretty sure it’s I-40. But once the recent disaster damage gets fixed it will probably not continue to hold that spot
RioTheLeoo@reddit
It’s gotta be the 405 with an honorable mention going to the 110
notapunk@reddit
The 405 is simply a very long parking lot masquerading as a freeway.
tsefardayah@reddit
Why do we call those interstates when they stay in one state? And also, upon looking at Wikipedia, why do we have 4 different I-110s in 4 different states?
yabbobay@reddit
Under 99 are actual interstates.
3 digit numbers are loops (even) and bypasses?/spurs? (Odd) off the 2 digit interstate
Maxpowr9@reddit (OP)
See how many 495s there are.
dsramsey@reddit
In short, they’re still part of the overall interstate system, and still conform to the standards specified for interstate highways, so they get numbered as I-whatever.
RioTheLeoo@reddit
I read too that’s it’s because interstates are federally funded, so like all states pitch in for them to some degree
dsramsey@reddit
Yeah, that’s part of it too. Hawaii, Alaska, and Puerto Rico have highways that are “interstate highways” because they’re federally funded and part of the system, even if there’s obviously not an interstate connection happening for them.
stirwhip@reddit
I drive nearly the length of it about once a month. It’s grown on me. Each segment has its own flavor: the valley, the pass, the airport, the big bend, Long Beach, north OC, John Wayne airport, south OC. It’s like every few minutes it transitions to something that feels completely new.
guyuteharpua@reddit
Fun fact, the 110 is the oldest freeway in the US.

I 70 from Denver to Kansas City. No traffic.. because no one lives there because there's nothing out there. At all.
NCLAXMOM26@reddit
I -95 is rage inducing
Hendersenpai@reddit
I’ve lived on both coasts. The I-5 is rough, but not bad enough to make me want to commit sin like the I-95.
yabbobay@reddit
I've lived on both coasts as well and if I never go back to LA bc of the traffic, I will be ok.
Illustrious-Lead-960@reddit
H1 in Oahu.
MesopotamiaSong@reddit
i70 between columbus and indianapolis. always a crash or construction or some other BS. traffic at the weirdest times of day. nothing to see or do.
Otherwise-OhWell@reddit
I-290 aka: the Eisenhower Expressway, or the Ike.
The part between the Hillside Strangler and Harlem Ave is nothing but misery. The rest is only agony.
I_Left_Already@reddit
Is this a new development? I lived in Chicago until about 5 years ago and the Kennedy was much worse than the Eisenhower back then. Neither had anything on I-75 / I-85 in Atlanta, though.
Rampant16@reddit
Kennedy is definitely worse right now considering about half the highway is closed for construction for the next few years.
Otherwise-OhWell@reddit
The Kennedy sucks ass, no doubt. But I live in the western burbs and crawling the Ike has prbly consumed months of my life? But, I used to work in Avondale so I'm unfortunately familiar with both the Ike and I-90 (the Kennedy), up until Diversey-ish.
The Ike sucks worse for me, I guess. I dread it.
TheRealDudeMitch@reddit
In my opinion the Kennedy is worse overall but the Ike is fucking terrible near the hillside strangler
GBPack52@reddit
There are no laws on I-290 EB. Any gap is considered a lane.
kwikileaks@reddit
I swear it’s like mad max at times. Scary as hell
Red_Beard_Rising@reddit
I-65 from Gary to Indianapolis is notorious. I never believed it until I spent 3 hours at a stand-still.
I guess some idiot took his Corvette out in a snow storm and got it lodged under a truck. Another truck got jack-knifed as a result.
Regardless, that stretch of interstate was always a guessing game. Several times it was one lane for miles because snow drifted into the right lane off the fields. Yes, even the traffic did not stop the snow drifts from forming.
7yearlurkernowposter@reddit
I-70 In North St. Louis City is my least favourite by far.
JayFenty@reddit
I-95 in south Florida

that would be my answer no question. south Florida drivers are just frightening
Ok-Parfait2413@reddit
The I 10 going either way traffic and get run off the road and how many lanes. Take a tranquilizer driving it lol
whip_lash_2@reddit
For boredom, I-70 from KC to Denver.
For suicide-inducing traffic, I-95 between Boston and Miami.
That_Weird_Mom81@reddit
I80. Not because of traffic but because you will get stuck behind two tractor trailers trying to pass each other on a hill for miles.

I-70 in the Colorado mountains

I-94 Benton Harbor to Detroit. It's the main through road between the two sides of the state and no amount of construction can combat the amount of traffic wearing down the pavement.
ScorpioMagnus@reddit
Seconded. It may be an inaccurate perception, but I feel like the number of semis is always abnormally high.
DoinIt989@reddit
Gotta be I-93.
Clementinecutie13@reddit
I-80 in any part of Illinois. Fucking Trainwreck getting cockblocked by semis the whole way
happyburger25@reddit
Probably I-83/Jones Falls Expressway/JFX (Harrisburg, PA to Baltimore, MD)
sammysbud@reddit
Recent Baltimore transplant and every time I hit those bumps on 83-S into the city, i feel like my car is done for 😭
emmy_lou_harrisburg@reddit
Heard. Potholes, cattle shutes, and neverending constructions. I blew many a tire on that road.

Phil_ODendron@reddit
95 through NJ is a breeze compared to 95 in CT or DC.
Confetticandi@reddit
Oh, I was gonna say I-55 in Illinois for its ice, potholes, extremely tedious scenery, and endless road construction.
Wageslave645@reddit
The sad thing is, the Illinois part of I-55 is arguably the nicer part of it. The farther south you go, the higher the likelihood that you get to be the victim of a crime.
rolyoh@reddit
I don't think there's an absolute worst, but I-880 in the SF Bay Area is awful.
virtual_human@reddit
I70, it goes through Ohio.
Tommy_Wisseau_burner@reddit
I-95 or I-4 or I-35
EspressoOverdose@reddit
I’d imagine the 95 in Florida because it had the highest number of fatalities
kippersforbreakfast@reddit
30/40 through Arkansas from Texarkana to Memphis is terrible. There are 10X as many heavy trucks as there are regular cars. It's hilly, so the trucks are always speeding up/slowing down. You pass a truck because they're going 45 in a 70, and then a few minutes later, they're riding your bumper because you're doing the speed limit.
Stay_Beautiful_@reddit
95 through literally anywhere
Scrappy_The_Crow@reddit
I-20 in Louisiana and Mississippi in terms of road condition.
rhb4n8@reddit
95 specifically the part in Connecticut but the whole thing sucks balls
Some_Loan@reddit
From Bridgeport to the NY border is more a parking lot than a highway.
rhb4n8@reddit
Honestly it's bad from the RI border to the NY border a lot of the time which is crazy because it's somehow much better in NY even with the bridge
Maxpowr9@reddit (OP)
It's the 2-lane stretch from Westerly to New Haven. Get double-dicked by trucks there and it's torture.
VoluptuousValeera@reddit
Honestly, everyone's personal anecdotes and feelings aside: Probably Interstate H-1 in Hawaii (O'ahu). It is literally always packed and its short in distance unlike many who have rural areas bringing down the average.
Sowf_Paw@reddit
Personally? I-345 is the worst interstate highway, and maybe the worst highway I have ever had the displeasure of driving on.
It's fairly short and doesn't even go outside of downtown Dallas. It's just a viaduct between I-45 and US 75 and doesn't even have its own signage.
Its a few miles of chaos is what it is. Driving it is the worst, you have to constantly change lanes because every lane keeps turning into an exit only lane.
HoyAIAG@reddit
480
TehWildMan_@reddit
I-4 in Orlando. I've spent many years in Atlanta, but our level of highway chaos is nothing compared to the rush hour construction zone shenanigans I've seen there
PM_ME_YOUR_KALE@reddit
The I95 corridor from like DC to somewhere north of NYC sucks ass
paka96819@reddit
H1, H2 and H3. It doesn’t connect to another state.

Has to be the 405 Parking lot.
who_peed_in_my_soup@reddit
I-90 from just outside Chicago to Badlands NP. Mind numbingly boring.
smapdiagesix@reddit
In terms of traffic, 95 between Petersburg VA and Jacksonville FL is fine.
It's godawful boring and big chunks smell like dirty diapers because of the pulp mills, but the traffic is fine.
RsonW@reddit
That I at least somewhat occasionally drive?
80 between Roseville and San Francisco.
TheArgonianBoi77@reddit
I been everywhere and I-4 is still the worst for me. So many accidents and a lot of jackass drivers.

I-5 or some off-branch in LA.
