Build a Wall across the Gulf of Mexico to Stop Hurricanes
Posted by TheGreatJohnQuixote@reddit | CrazyIdeas | View on Reddit | 38 comments
Too much wind and current comes up the Gulf and makes a big mess of storms that are always such an ado to deal with. What if we just stopped the wind with a big hecking wall and then no more hurricanes?
Also it'd be cool to have a bridge from Florida to like... the Yucatan or something.

All around ecologically a bad idea
TheGreatJohnQuixote@reddit (OP)
Ecological worse than the weather? I mean the wind is like really loud and REALLY wet...a wall is neither!
If you ask me, a wall across the entire Gulf of Mexico is exactly what FDR would have wanted with the New Deal
ivthreadp110@reddit
When does not loud when it whispers.... You do have a point if we put a wall all around the Gulf of Mexico if there was like an oil spill we could just use it like a giant oil reserve. Like just have a oily sea.. as long as nobody smokes cigarettes in the State of Florida and flicks it into the crude oil. Yes I'm a work crude oil does not light instantly from cigarette but my point still remains

And make Neptune pay for it!

Go to bed, Donald.
Seriously, the thing is in the sky, what is a wall going to do?
TheGreatJohnQuixote@reddit (OP)
It's windy outside, but then you go behind a wall and it's not windy anymore. So big enough wall will stop big wind. Easy peasy
BobTheInept@reddit
Ahh, I see. My mistake
cosmicloafer@reddit
Make it a wall of windmills, free energy!
Nuclear_Geek@reddit
Or you could run them in reverse to blow the hurricanes away.
Turbulent-Name-8349@reddit
This is a better idea than the original. Wind turbines extract more wind energy from an extreme wind than a solid wall. And you'd only need to build them where the water is shallow, such on coral reefs, because only shallow water fuels the power of hurricanes. As a result of the wind turbines being built in shallow water, they would not interfere with shipping.
TheGreatJohnQuixote@reddit (OP)
Yeah but what if the wind turbines turn evil and make the wind more faster and then the hurricanes get angier at us??
SmokeyGiraffe420@reddit
It’s less crazy than shooting the hurricane, which people have apparently been actually doing for like a decade now
Tongue4aBidet@reddit
A bridge to the Yucatan isn't stopping much. Safe to say almost all hurricanes start in the Atlantic Ocean so you are trying to break some of them up with a wall / bridge? Did you forget about the entire East Coast?
ThamusWitwill@reddit
I think dropping bombs in the eye of the storm would be more effective and cheaper
gc3@reddit
Youre-In-Trouble@reddit
Gotcha, build more nukes.
Johnnycarroll@reddit
Can we try injecting it with bleach? Get someone on that.
TheGreatJohnQuixote@reddit (OP)
Yeah but bombs don't let me drive to Yucatan
RatCatSlim@reddit
that road trip would go hard🔥
Thneed1@reddit
If you timed them correctly, perhaps they could:
band-of-horses@reddit
It worked for Sharknados, so I can't see why it wouldn't work for a hurricane.

...and make the gulf pay for it.
hogman09@reddit
It will be the greatest and most grand wall and the hurricane will pay for it!
jeffroavs@reddit
We could use the materials from the millions of damaged structures! It’s recycling at its finest.
foolishdrunk211@reddit
A wall of windmills to blow it back the other way!
Yundadi@reddit
if you can harvest that energy and store it somewhere, you will have a good reserve of energy and energy prices will be cheap
CarlJustCarl@reddit
And make the fish pay for it
AdditionalCheetah354@reddit
I think a huge wall of jello! I think you’re onto something!!
HeathrJarrod@reddit
They would have to be like 50000 m tall
Fireproofspider@reddit
50km is 5x higher than the tallest mountain on earth and literally halfway to space.
HeathrJarrod@reddit
My bad it’s feet not m. 50000 ft. That’s like 9 1/2 miles
