What’s going on in the trucking industry? I’ve been driving for five years and it seems like pay has dropped. Has seen job postings for as low as $20 an hour in California, which is insane. Everything seems stagnant. Right now me and my wife team drive and we made $.82 a mile on a dedicated route. And I was looking for a way to come home, but I don’t see anything worth it, and we are fully certified Hazmat tanker doubles.

Why do you believe that they are a scam? If you think they are, I’d love to understand why you think they’re a scam and provide resources on why you’re likely incorrect.
The average union member earns 19% more than non-union members, has two to three times as much paid time off, better healthcare benefits packages with lower premiums the vast majority of the time, and worker protections for labor rights that including just cause terminations - you cannot be fired for pissing off the boss unlike non-union workers.
I can provide more information, but that’s what I recall off the top of my head. For $40 a month, that’s a helluva deal. $40 dues for $1,800 a month saved on healthcare insurance is a no-brainer. $40 dues for 2-3x the PTO is a no-brainer. $40 dues for OT after 40 hours a week or 8 hours a day is a no-brainer.
How is unionization a scam, in your opinion, when the inverse is 70 hour workweeks, paid 50¢ per mile, little to no vacation time, and fired if you don’t burn out your clock?

Well, I can say this . My union had a pension we could collect after 30 years of service. The union kept mailing us unfo that the pension was in the green(fully funded). We then got a notice that the leadership voluntarily put the pension in the red. We now have to work til 65 and companies payments went way up. There was no grandfathering in. There were guys that were 47 with one more year left told they got to work til 65. Total scam. Plus any time there was a problem they never did a damn thing to help , my shop Stewart handled most things by getting the state involved

The problem is that several hundred thousand drivers aren’t unionized, yet. Teamsters can only do so much when it represents less than a dozen companies and ~5-8% of the workforce.
If the Teamsters represented 50% or more of all drivers, they’d have greater abilities to change the market.

Contact a teamsters representative and ask them to speak with you. They’ll bring informational packets and guide you along the way.
A fair warning, if your company finds out they may fire you. There are actions they cannot legally terminate you for, but there are some they can. The union steward can guide you.

It's not blaming them. They will take that pay because that pay is probably better than anything they have ever gotten before. It's not their personal fault, but having a large supply of labor is going to drive wages down. To not recognize that is asinine.

Unfortunately he’s not wrong. A lot of people are hiring illegal immigrants for cheap labor on hotshot setups and this drives prices down across the board. Obviously thats not the only factor and the companies are to blame as well, but you cant deny that its the truth. If people didnt take poverty level wages, this wouldnt happen. Also it a little weird that you would automatically assume he meant brown people. I see a lot of russian and ukrainian immigrants that dont even speak english running in those shady hotshot setups.

I used to be on TOM. The most they may require after being hired but before onboarding is a DOT physical, but you are not required to have your permit or CDL. You’ll be learning the jockey trucks and the many computer tools utilized to manage the yard before getting your CDL.
When I left, though, T1’s who got their CDL through career choice were hired over those that didn’t, though.

Personally I think the entire highway infrastructure needs to be updated to accommodate self driving vehicles, as well as adding industry wide changes to the SAE standards before we can even think about realistic fully automated cars much less trucks. Anything less is likely unsafe.

I just got hired at a fuel hauling gig right now but of course theres a catch: we work every single holiday every year. Its load pay, and averages out to $26 an hour lol. I feel you man I got one last ride with me before I give it up! I have a mentor out here in Bakersfield, California who does pretty good he has 10 trucks and he’s a friend of my wife’s sister and he says that he’ll walk me through and show me what’s up and I got another buddy who hauls asphalt who ended up with his own company and he told me the same thing. If it doesn’t work out, I’m either looking into crane operator, plumbing or something that I can make over 100 grand a year with a union

$23/hr is just not gonna cut it. Especially in 2024 California. The In-N-Out burger in Bakersfield starts at $22. Entry level/low skill jobs are paying kids as much as commercial drivers? Pretty crazy. Well, you'll get the caliber of employees you're willing to pay for. I'm sure it's a bunch of real "pros" working there. Haha. There's exceptions I suppose. Maybe you have a really small outfit/start up or something. You can't always afford to pay top dollar but if you're not a piece of shit, you'll take care of your loyal employees as you grow. That's what happened at the company I used to work for. Long story short, started at $12/hr doing seasonal work and left after about 9 yrs making $36/hr with great benefits, bonuses and quite a few other perks. 🤷♂️

"New Canadians" buying a license with zero training and working under a TFW program that has the government subsidizing 75% of their pay. Union guys in my area mane $26.xx. I make $32 with the same benefits and perks as union guys, but that took a lot of searching to find a good company.

I’m in Phoenix and when I was looking for a new gig this year, the average local pay was $24-25 which is ridiculous. If you want better pay you have to find an LTL. XPO was offering $34 for night shift local PD driver.

Not job searching anymore but I was seeing a lot of positions earlier this year less than $20 per hour. Even some regional and OTR paying less than $60k. It seems like there is a coordinated effort to reduce driver compensation across the industry. I know times are tough and you gotta do what you gotta do, but nobody should be even applying to these positions.
We need to start having more serious conversations about unionizing. These companies don't care about us and will try to take everything they can.

Yes there are good paying jobs and decent runs up here still but they are getting farther and fewer between. I talk to some drivers and they tell me they wish they never came here. You can't blame the rich for everything. Our gov started out because of religious oppression and taxation so it is designed to allow for religious freedom and low taxes. The fact that it is different from where it started should alarm everyone. If we want to lower taxes understand that means low taxes for everyone not just poor people but rich people too.
With that said, the issue is how people have perverted the law and changed it to suit their agendas. When we stop doing that it will benefit everyone.
The system we have always had is one that rewards entrepreneurs. The money people give them isn't ours to use. It's what they earned on their own. Why are people so mentally fixated on killing Capitalism when u can just move to a country that already has no Capitalism? I'm genuinely asking.

I had a local job once. Pay stated 11 an hour. This was years ago. But I got an interview and the offer was 20. Maybe it's different once they know your experience. I'm from CA too

Pay what the job is worth or raise the amount of experience someone needs before letting them in. That whole pay based on experience is a slippery slope that business use to cut corners! You are not wrong. I was 19 just got my class A. So it was doing double bottom dumps out of hanford. I ended up taking it. Only place that would hire me. It was a super chill gig. But went otr once I turned 21. Some of the seniors were making 30. But I was bottom of the barrel. This was when minimum wage was 7.50. So 20 was balling to my young dumb ass. Lol

We all got raises at local jobs during covid, at least in my area (NJ). Even the shitty LTL’s went from $25 up to $35-37. I think the problems are two things: too many people ran out and got a CDL, and then the freight market stabilized somewhat.
I have a steady Teamster job. It was tempting to jump ship during covid and make bank as an owner operator or OTR. My job couldn’t hire anyone with a pulse for $35/hr and a great benefit package 3-4 years ago. The young drivers in particular didn’t want to handle freight (“I didn’t get a CDL to do warehouse work!”) and some couldn’t drive a manual. Now, we have experienced drivers applying because they lost their jobs.
This is one of many reasons why a good job is hard to leave. They told us yeah you could go somewhere else thinking you’ll get rich, but when the inevitable slump or crash comes, you’ll be out of luck while we’ll still be here. I played the long game.
But yeah fuck that job listing, you can literally make that in fast food.

I think it’s that along with a lack of enforcement. Some of these bottom feeder carriers shouldn’t be in business, and I hate to say there are drivers out there who shouldn’t have even been given a CDL. They’re also doing everything they can to de-professionalize our profession. Standards should higher.

I feel like everyone forgets that hourly means you get overtime after 40 hours. And you get paid for everything. Pretrip, posttrip, your 30, that stop at loves to grab a burrito, the stop at the rest area 20 miles later bc you ate a loves burrito.

Seems like it's hit or miss. I worked for a contractor that serviced the post office and we did not get OT. I wish I had knew that before applying. Now I ask. IMO, there's no reason why any hourly job shouldn't pay OT, especially with the long hours of trucking. If you work 60hrs a week and get paid $26/hr that's like $1,000 a week you would be missing out on.

Abusing the working class has always been in style with the government and its cronies. It won’t change until we either shut down the country by striking en masse, which won’t happen because there are several thousand drivers that would gladly scab and make 20¢ per mile if it meant they had a job while the rest were on strike. I run from the claims of safety or performance bonuses. I worked for amazon for a little bit. Youll never see a safety bonus because a different driver didn’t stop 5 feet in front of a stop sign so the whole location misses out for that week. There’s always some poor excuse.
