Best hand gun for mom?
Posted by itzAspen@reddit | Firearms | View on Reddit | 44 comments
My mom lives on her own now, and we both want her to have a gun to keep at home. I had her try my G2C, and she thinks it’s too compact. I was thinking a G17 but wanted to hear from guys who know more than me. What would you recommend for your mom? Thanks for the help!

Big ole classic S&W 38 k frame revolver
DontBelieveTheirHype@reddit
Terrible recommendation in 2024.

Wrong!
robertva1@reddit
Get her a nice 38. Easy point and shoot. No racking a slide allways ready to go

My parents are in their late 60s. I got them a Ruger Security 380. Just something to check out. It’s a larger size 380 so easier to shoot for them.
Elijah1978@reddit
Maybe something chambered in . 38 would be great. Glock or SW or Sig.
Darksept@reddit
Consider a rifle in 9mm maybe? More velocity and easy to aim.

So this is coming from my wife who is 5'2'' and tiny hands. Her first carry pistol was a S&W 9mm EZ with the thumb safety. She wasnt comfortable at first carrying without having the external safety. As she gained experience she wanted a carry gun that had full size capacity with a red dot and got comfortable with the idea of carrying a gun without an external safety. This year she switched to the Sig Sauer p365 Fuse. Its technically a full size frame but VERY thin grip so its very easy to conceal carry and easy to get her hands around. But this might not be for newer shooters as there's no external safety.

I know many moms who don’t have the strength to rack a slide, even the S&W shield ez -.- And they always forget the controls after like a week.
I would say a short barreled, double action revolver that holds as many rounds as possible would be a good choice. No limp wrists, no slide racking, just pull the DA trigger.
BluesFan43@reddit
My wife likes my P365, she likes my Walther PDP-F so much that it is now hers.
That said, help her try lots of things. This is an intensely personal decision.
Drchomo-47@reddit
If she’s going to practice with it enough to be adept, than the possibilities are really wide open. But if it’s a situation like my wife’s, where getting her out to the range is like pulling teeth, you need something thats going to be easy to control. If my wife has to use her pistol in a life or death situation she is not going to lock her wrist. She had a G42 and it had a failure to feed once every mag. So I limp wristed 5 pistols; G19, MP shield, Hellcat pro, a sig (I don’t recall the model) and one more I don’t remember at the moment. The only one that cycled reliably was the hellcat pro. I actually really like it, and enjoy CC it over my daily carry. Another great option would be a revolver. Less moving parts. Not going to fail to cycle because she doesn’t have proper form.
SixGunSlingerManSam@reddit
Revolvers actually have more moving parts than a semi auto, but they are more forgiving of mishandling for sure.
Drchomo-47@reddit
I guess what I meant was less moving mass. You don’t have a small battering ram slamming back and forth.
SixGunSlingerManSam@reddit
Yes, that is true for sure.
hikehikebaby@reddit
Does it have to be a handgun? Is she open to an AR-15?
For handguns - Glock 17, Walther pdp-F, sig p365 macro, & m&p 2.0 are good for small hands and have a short trigger reach but are large and easy to shoot. She needs to decide herself but I think those are solid options.
HWKII@reddit
I would add the Smith and Wesson Ladysmith to that list, because revolvers need love too. My wife loves two pistols - the Ladysmith and the Shield EZ. She doesn’t have great hard dexterity but S&W nailed it with these two.

Dude this is a perfect set for her to try out. I appreciate it
hikehikebaby@reddit
I'm a woman with small hands lol.
Check out the p365 fuse too.
Puzzleheaded_Fix3135@reddit
What did you think about the p365 rose/rose comp if you have shot it? How does it compare to the other p365’s?
hikehikebaby@reddit
I haven't shot either.
The rose comp us just a comped xL with a different pattern on the grip, and I love the XL. I think it's a great option for concealed carry. The longer slide makes a huge difference for me.
The rose is a special edition of the p365 in .380. I haven't shot that either but I've heard good things. I'm sure it's easier to handle than the 9mm version.
Puzzleheaded_Fix3135@reddit
Ah ok, I’ve shot the XL and liked it. Thought the rose might have more differences there, thank you for clarifying. I’ve also heard good things about the other rose as well, but never shot it. Thanks for the info!
hikehikebaby@reddit
Well, both of the rose guns have a thumb safety and I think they come with a small safe. I think otherwise it's just a rebranded spectre comp.

Sorry I usually call girls and guys dude lol. I really appreciate your help!!

Don't discount the new s&w j frame in 32 h&R magnum. I think it is the 432 uc

Let. Her. Choose.
Find a range that rents or find some friends with a good variety for her to try and make her own choice.
itzAspen@reddit (OP)
Good point. Definitely going to do that, do you have any recommendations to give her a basic idea?
fordag@reddit
Make sure she tries autos and revolvers, no ultra lights.
SniperSRSRecon@reddit
I second this. As a recommendation to try, the 509/509c/503. The 503 is just the small singlestack of the 509.
joelfarris@reddit
Start everyone with the easiest pistol caliber to be successful with: The .22.
Once she's smiling with that one, run one mag through another 5, 6, or even 7 other options, until she's no longer smiling. Now you've got a conversation to have.
joelfarris@reddit
Is she a shorter barrel .38 special mom, or a longer barrel Smith & Wesson .357 mom?
Let's find out!
spinonesarethebest@reddit
Was going to post this.
Apprehensive_Cook911@reddit
Take her to a class. John McPhee SOBTactical taught my friends mom and they became best friends. They still talk. He's a great dude. He was also on Shawn Ryan's show.
zakary1291@reddit
S&W shield EZ.
Next-Investment-9434@reddit
The one SHE can handle and shoot accurately. Take her to the range let her try as many as possible and let her decide.
SixGunSlingerManSam@reddit
Step 1: Find range with guns to rent. Step 2: Pick up mom in car. Step 3: Drive to said range. Step 4: Let mom shoot many guns Step 5: Let mom pick gun she likes Step 6: Buy gun. Step 7: Buy gun training. Step 8: Profit.
Hopeful_Tea_8940@reddit
We're all different ages here so my mom is probably older than yours. So, how old is your mum? Does she suffer from something like arthritis in her hands like my mum does??? Because that's gonna make a difference in what you consider...
itzAspen@reddit (OP)
Thanks douchebag! I’m looking for recommendations for her to try out. I figured this sub had people that knew more than me, so I wanted an opinion. Cheers bud
Freash_air_plz@reddit
could always get something in 380 if shes more small. a hole is going to hurt no matter how big, and once it goes off, people tend to run away.
itzAspen@reddit (OP)
She feels like she needs something bigger, I guess. I think its more of a comfort thing
logonbump@reddit
Consider something cheap, light and full size; reliable like a Ruger P345. Can be found new still.
Freash_air_plz@reddit
G49 came out. g17 slide on a g19 frame. full size slide with smaller grip. wont know until she goes and trys them all tho
what-name-is-it@reddit
Find a range that lets her rent them to try out. Then rent her a S&W EZ 380.
