Virtchoo@reddit
I hate getting stuck behind concrete trucks because of how slow they are, how long do you think one with a 53’ trailer takes to get up to speed?
ursisterstoy@reddit
If the truck was loaded they might still be trying to get up to speed but I empty probably no slower than some Freighliner with a Detroit automated transmission assuming the driver knows how to drive. As others have said, they like to use old model trucks, sometimes old enough they might be twin sticks, and they are 70,000 pounds loaded. Throw a trailer on there, even an empty one, and they exceed 80,000 pounds easily. They’d basically require overweight and over length permits but at that point they’d just hook the trailer to a normal tractor without the big ass cement mixer weighing it down.
Beekatiebee@reddit
Not sure why you’re ragging on Detroits. Easily the best transmissions on the market.
I’ve driven every auto available at this point, a DD13/15 and a DT12 blows all of the competition out of the water.
Only Volvo even comes close.
Rzymatic@reddit
Volvo’s is superior in my opinion. I drive both for work and the Volvo’s transmission is very smart with its shift points and even adjusts it based on your weight. Freightliner seems to be the same shifting empty or loaded, and revs super high for no reason sometimes. Don’t get me started on how reversing a Freightliner while turning the wheel has the truck twerking while going slow, but I don’t know if that’s transmission related.
ursisterstoy@reddit
My Freightliner actually adjusts to different weights just fine. It’s governed at 65 which is dumb but if I’m bobtailing it shifts 5-7-8-9-10-11-12, if I’m pulling an empty trailer it’s 3-5-7-9-10-11-12 and a loaded trailer is 2-4-6-8-9-10-11-12. It only shifts all 12 if I’m climbing a steep hill or I’m stuck in traffic and it’s at least half assed loaded and maybe I can get up to 4 mph for 10 seconds and then up to 7 mph and so on. So long as I let off the accelerator it’ll use the gears it normally skips in traffic or it’ll use them when it about falls flat on its face trying to climb a steep hill. What does annoy me though is how it’s geared and when it decides to shift.
It’s geared to do ~2 mph at 600 rpms in first gear but it’ll skip first and ride the clutch if I’m going slower than 3 mph for whatever reason. It’ll hold 12th gear all the way to 56 mph when 1000 rpms is 57 mph when it’s struggling to climb a hill but at slower speeds it’ll push 1800 or even 2200 rpms in 8th gear rather than shift to 9th of struggling to hold 40 mph. Weak ass piece of shit but the transmission shifts okay and it does adjust for different conditions like going uphill, downhill, 80,000+ pound fully loaded, 50,000-75,000 half assed loaded, less than 50,000 pounds down empty trailer, and even no trailer at all. It slams through the gears bobtailing and it is in high range before my back tires leave the stop line but fully loaded I bet a person could run a 100 meter dash before I’m doing 65 mph.
Rzymatic@reddit
God damn son, you know your truck.
Beekatiebee@reddit
That’s fair! It probably comes down to use-case. Most of my time in FL’s was OTR, and all of my time in Volvos has been food service local.
They’re both leagues ahead of Eaton, though! We have those too. I’ve killed a few.
ursisterstoy@reddit
Eaton autos are pretty trash but I think all autos are terrible compared to having full control over exactly when the transmission shifts. The original Eaton autos were even worse than the new ones. Roll backwards and then do a burnout taking off, hold first gear through a turn, shift 6 times after the turn, grenade themselves on the highway. No thanks. The Detroit isn’t as trash as that and it does compensate for different load and terrain conditions but when it wants to shift it’s going to shift even if accompanied by a lovely crunching sound that can’t be good on the gears. Haven’t tried the Volvo autos but I hear they’re the best of the autos.
Rzymatic@reddit
Oh yeah I’m all local, so I run into a lot of traffic, red lights, and stop signs. Honestly though, no semi is smooth at low speeds haha but Volvo’s is just slightly better.
I don’t have much experience with Eaton, but I’ve only heard bad things about them.
ursisterstoy@reddit
I was mostly joking because they like to pair it with a weak ass engine and that’s what I drive. 20,000 pounds in the trailer hit a small hill governed at 65 and I’m doing 59 before I hit the top (weak engine) where the only actual problems I have with the transmission are when I’m coming to a dead stop at the bottom of a hill and it decides it’s downshifting even if it destroys itself and I get a lovely “crunch” sound and how it’s programmed to be in 12th gear at 50+ mph when it’s doing 57 mph at 1000 rpms so it falls flat on its face and then freaks out and shifts straight to 10th gear. The other problem I have with the transmission is that it doesn’t have a shifter sticking out of the floor with a black switch on the front and a gray switch on the side but that’s a problem with all autos.
If the cement truck is empty it’ll take off like my truck takes off loaded probably and if it’s loaded and pulling a loaded trailer I suspect it to not have enough power to get up to speed being how those older trucks may have gotten by on ~350 hp and they either tried to run 10 gears or they ran extra gears and two shifter sticks. I suspect it’d struggle to pull itself out of a wet paper bag if it weighed out at 135,000 pounds.
CobraWasTaken@reddit
He's probably not loaded with concrete in the truck and a loaded trailer. And the trailer may not be loaded either. This seems like a "I really need to move this trailer across town RIGHT NOW" type of deal.
Virtchoo@reddit
I get that. I hauled cement in a pneumatic for years, I know how these trucks work. The question remains though. How long do you think it took him to get to that speed lol.
1ftintherave@reddit
Love it
CobraWasTaken@reddit
I mean it still probably would be pretty slow even with an empty truck and trailer actually lol
Ornery_Ads@reddit
I think it's a "we bought these 3 things at auction" here's your plane ticket, go pick them up.

Texas_hvac_tech@reddit

rugerscout308@reddit
My truck has literally no power. Got stuck on a hill yesterday and had to go in low gear to get up it. Mixers breath in so much concrete dust lol
Objective-Outcome811@reddit
Well I'm pretty sure that dudes not hauling both 10 yards of crete and a trailer so at least there's that.
abubahzer@reddit
last week I went to West Virginia and there is two lane for almost 50 mile and there is a lot of slow truck driving in the left line and Their speed was 40 mph and the road speed at 70 mph . and they don’t use emergency light because there is a sign if you are under 50 turn on emergency light
AdventurousLawyer646@reddit
I mean as long as he got combination on his cdl I don't see y not!
Ok_Length7872@reddit
Depending on the state though, might have to worry about a length permit
NumberPlastic2911@reddit
Maybe in FL or CA, but even then, I don't think this would need it because the trailer itself isn't big
Ok_Length7872@reddit
We know Canada wouldn’t tolerate it they don’t even allow super sleepers in the country
imakepoorchoices2020@reddit
I thought Canada had all the super B trains and stuff like that?
Ok_Length7872@reddit
Doubles are allowed, but when it comes to tractors you’re limited to a maximum 244inch wheelbase
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Guess my truck isn't Cali legal. Which is odd cause I thought I saw decent wheelbases on Canadian trucks. Is it regional?
Ok_Length7872@reddit
I think if you have a 53’ footer and one of those massive sleeper trucks it goes over their length limit
bobmonkeyclown@reddit
Ah, makes sense.
Ok_Length7872@reddit
Not too sure, I do show tours and I’ve always had to hop the border to swap out trailers with super sleeper trucks who said they can’t go into Canada
letgomyleghoee@reddit
You may be thinking of Canadias southern inbred brethren, Australia.
1morepl8@reddit
There is just a length limit of 77'.
Bowtieguy_76@reddit
Which this would be over. That is a 53' van trailer & that cement mixer is gonna be atleast 30' long + the dolly between the 2
1morepl8@reddit
Obviously, yes. Just saying the actual rule VS Canada doesn't allow super sleepers.
NumberPlastic2911@reddit
I wonder what's the reason 🤔 I feel that most of these laws are made because of terrible drivers/companies pressing their luck and causing major incidents
Xcon1vcr@reddit
FL is good
cavehill_kkotmvitm@reddit
I'm not even sure that would strictly require combination, since it's a single trailer and bogie
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Combination literally means vehicle + trailer.
You are thinking of a doubles endorsement which allows 2 trailers.
BigPPDaddy@reddit
I'm a bit removed from all of this, but since a dolly is a point of pivot and then the attached trailer is another one... does that count as a double?
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
No. A semi trailer with a dolly under it is legally called a trailer. Trailers evolved from wagons which have a front axle and pivot. Semi trailers are exempt from "trailer" length laws. Therefore in many states you cannot turn a semi trailer back into a "full trailer" because it is too long which is why it's rare to see a semi trailer, trailer.
cavehill_kkotmvitm@reddit
You would be correct
66bronco28@reddit
I think it would be too long bumper to bumper probably 80ft
colleensdoormat@reddit
I wouldnt think the pintle hook is up to the task
HowlingWolven@reddit
Then explain pike trains.
colleensdoormat@reddit
There are different sized pintle hooks on the tractor and trailers. Tractor is only rated to pull dolly by itself
HowlingWolven@reddit
Yeah, but that’s not a tractor. It’s more akin to a dump truck which do have the big heavy pintles.
colleensdoormat@reddit
You're right. I don't know why I envisioned a light pintle on that. It wouldn't make any sense
MachStyle@reddit
if it has the right pintle hook, those things are rated for some serious weight. I have a 50 ton pintle on my truck and my last one had a 30 ton. That hitch isnt going any where and with a converter dolly, theres next to no tongue Wight on it so its barely getting a work out.
Now that old R model mack pulling it? shes getting a work out even if empty lol
Born4thJuly@reddit
The pintle hook says rated for no more than 5k lbs. LOL
MachStyle@reddit
Where the hell did you pull that information from lmao. We arnt talking farmer browns 2 inch receiver ball and pintle combo here.
Born4thJuly@reddit
Volvo semi. And I pull doubles. Literally has a huge sticker that says "Warning" haha.
MachStyle@reddit
No way. I'm not saying I don't believe you but damn I'd like to see that. Wonder why the rating is so low for you guys? And is that on the pintle hitch it's self or the draw bar and ring of the dolly?
rvlifestyle74@reddit
That's a first for me. I'd never even considered the fact that a concrete truck could tow a trailer.
Chrisfindlay@reddit
That truck is just a regular conventional truck. If it had any other body on the back almost no would bat an eye at it. The reason concrete mixers rarely tow is they are heavy. It's nearly impossible for them to stay within weight with an added trailer. A common 10 cubic yard mixer is around 70k when loaded.
66bronco28@reddit
Most mixers also dont have trailer brakes
Electronic_Macaron_9@reddit
Those brakes are caged and you know it.
66bronco28@reddit
Probably
jokiethejackman922@reddit
Mixer driver here. We’re permitted it put 10 yards on our 10 wheelers.
66bronco28@reddit
Ok our 10 yarders had 1 pusher and a tag axle
Beekatiebee@reddit
I mean if it has a pintle hook it’s probably got air line hookups.
No idea why it would have had them though lmao.

randomkeystrike@reddit
How does that work in terms of the towing rig? What do they hook up to the concrete truck to allow it to hook up the trailer? (Not a trucker, and this scenario isn’t covered in the ATS game)
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
Same way as you pull any semi trailer without a 5th wheel. A converter dolly. Used to be really common, but in 70s? when the length laws started coming out it went away. Here in IL I could do something similar but I have to be under 40' trailer with the dolly (so 35' trailer) and then a 25' tow vehicke. It's not practical to use, but is possible to do. Other states allow much longer combinations.
Turbooggyboy@reddit
Fun fact: using a dolly to hook a trailer to a rigid-body truck is really common in Scandinavia allowing for a length of 82 feet (25.25 meters).
I used to do air cargo hauling from Finland to the Netherlands and with that combination you could just drop the trailer when reaching the south of Sweden allowing the trailer to be pulled by a semi down through continental Europe (with it's tighter length restrictions) without having to unload the cargo onto a different type of vehicle combination,

dumpyboat@reddit
It could be that the truck and trailer are both empty and this is a totally legit way to move them from point A to point B. Like from an auction site to the buyer.
Chrisfindlay@reddit
He would have to be to stay with weight. Concrete truck are super heavy when loaded.
ValuableShoulder5059@reddit
But you max out a semi truck in a lot of states based on bridge law. Throw another 4 axles and 60' into play, you can haul a lot more! I guarantee that's a legal combo to 80k!
Chrisfindlay@reddit
Yep if you don't have enough length between your axles it's difficult to stay within bridge weight.
yodas_sidekick@reddit
But it’s not loaded
Chrisfindlay@reddit
Yes that's what i said.
If the truck was loaded with concrete he would be too heavy to be within legal weight. The truck behaves like it unloaded aswell sonit safe to assume the truck is empty.
