If you pass people in the “suicide lane” you are a bad driver.

All this just to turn left into Publix.

I don't understand why people call it a "suicide lane". It has a name. It's a turn lane. It's for turning. It's only for turning. The fact that people can get license and not know this is wild to me
MuckRaker83@reddit
I had a very unsatisfying discussion with a girl I know whose dad taught her to use it as a merging lane for left turns onto the street
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
How so? Turning into a street is a valid use of a turn lane. It is for turning off of, or on to, the street. They have them on busy roads so that drivers don't have to wait for both directions to be clear. It alleviates traffic congestion. This is one of their intended purposes.
justinh2@reddit
That's not a turn lane by definition, that's the center median. Used for turning yes, but also for entering a divided road for merging purposes. Not passing though. Never passing.
IamTroyOfTroy@reddit
That's illegal in Michigan. It's only for turning left.
justinh2@reddit
You're not allowed to cross two lanes to get to the center to wait for traffic to clear and join the direction you want to go? I honestly think you are mistaken, but I don't live there.
kevnuke@reddit
It isn't just Michigan. A lane marked that way is only for left turns everywhere I've ever been. If you're talking about using it to make a U-turn, it's probably illegal.
justinh2@reddit
No one said anything about a u-turn.
In OPs video there are no turn arrows in the center median to indicate its for turns only.
kevnuke@reddit
1) It's not a "center median." As someone else already pointed out, medians are areas separating opposing lanes of traffic that are not meant to be driven on under ANY circumstances, whether it's a physical barrier, such as a planter, or just painted solid lines on both sides. What's shown in the video is a LANE used to make a left turn from either direction.
2) No arrows are needed. It's implied that anyone with a drivers license should know what it is. Solid outside lines on both sides with dashed inner lines on both sides gives it away. I'm concerned that there are people out there with drivers licenses who don't know this.
justinh2@reddit
I'm concerned that you care so much
kevnuke@reddit
You're concerned that I care that I'm sharing the road with people who don't know the basic rules of driving? YOU'RE DAMNED RIGHT I CARE. Wtf is wrong with YOU that you don't care? Do you have no concern for your own safety?
justinh2@reddit
I don't care, no. Gonna keep doing it now just because I know it bothers you.
Bye now
kevnuke@reddit
It doesn't bother me? Endanger yourself and others out of spite all day.
LostDadLostHopes@reddit
Wait, are you sayin Michigan doesn't let you 'left turn into' it and accelerate to merge into traffic ?
Wow. Maybe I have been a dick driving forever.
justinh2@reddit
Seems to be the case, legal wise. I'm sure everyone does it though. Idk if the rule is that way everywhere.
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
A median divides a roadway but is not drivable terrain.
Pictured: https://masscrashreportmanual.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/8-2-1.jpeg
A Turn Lane on the other hand is a lane open to private vehicles going either direction for the purpose of turning off of or on to the road.
justinh2@reddit
You can have a painted center median
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
Sure, but it's still not drivable. If it's drivable by private cars, it is necessarily a lane
justinh2@reddit
The center painted median as shown in the video is perfectly and legally acceptable to use as a turn lane or an entrance point to opposite lanes/short merges. Hence, it is drivable. It is NOT to be used for passing.
Poi-s-en@reddit
I don’t understand why people call it “pop”. It has a name. It’s soda. It contains sodium bicarbonate. It doesn’t make light explosive sounds. The fact that people drink it and not know that is wild to me.
It’s regional dialect; slang. There are some regions that call it a “chicken lane”
LostDadLostHopes@reddit
It's a coke.
You want a coke? Ok. They got mt. dew, pepsi, etc....
Trust me I get it ;)
Mshawk71@reddit
After moving to the midwest, when someone says " you wanna pop?" it makes me laugh cause It makes me think of break dancing.😄 Like you trying to dance battle right now?
Jdoggcrash@reddit
Non ironically agree with your soda take.
LimOpp851@reddit
The fact people drink soda and don't know it's called sodium bicarbonate... reddit moments 🙄
deltajvliet@reddit
You guys don't call it sodium bicarbonate?
ForsakenBuilding6381@reddit
Read the comment they replied to. You're the reddit moment here lol
LimOpp851@reddit
Bitch I don't have time to read every single comment in this post I'm too busy giving my opinion in other posts.
OokerDooker420@reddit
Phoenix has actual suicide lanes. Between like 6 AM to 10 AM and 4 PM to 8PM or something like that. The middle turn lane gets turned into an actual additional lane during those periods and you can't use it as a turn lane. If you do there's a good chance you will be hit head on at full speed.
azgli@reddit
I think they finally removed them a couple of years ago, but they are absolutely terrifying if you aren't used to them.
kevnuke@reddit
Some of the carpool lanes on the freeways going to/from LA to outlying areas are like this. It's a carpool lane in the morning going towards LA or in the evening on the way back, but any other time is just a normal lane for everyone.
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
I have never ever heard of this, but I've also never driven in Phoenix. That sounds absolutely insane if it's not made up.
OokerDooker420@reddit
It's absolutely real lol. And the lane switches one-way directions so in the morning It's a southbound lane and in the evenings It's a northbound lane (to help with rush hour traffic). It's only one two of our roads but they're the most heavily trafficked besides freeways.
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
aaaaah so it's not both directions at the same time. Ok. Yeah we have something like that here. The "Commuter Highway" is what they call it, and it's 4 lanes that flip northbound / southbound based on time of day, into and out of the city.
Parking_Chance_1905@reddit
We have roads like that as well and they are not marked well... I caused a massive traffic jam the first time I tried turning onto one during rush hour, only to find the lane I was turning onto was now going the opposite direction it had been a few hours before. Was driving an f-450 with a 36ft trailer and ended up stuck in the intersection because everyone was attempting to get as close as possible rather than let me back up and take the turn tighter.
fleetiebelle@reddit
I've never seen the term "suicide lane" until today.
kevnuke@reddit
Same
PragmaticTroll@reddit
The term comes from paramedics and cops, due to the high mortality rate of people dying in those lanes.
fearsyth@reddit
There used to be a thing called a shared passing lane. It was a lane in the middle of the road that both directions could use to pass (obviously not at the same time. Those were called suicide lanes, or chicken lanes.
The term now gets used for shared turn lanes.
ponyo_impact@reddit
Because both sides of traffic use it for turning. So there is a chance you can enter the same time as someone and headon collision if you cant get back out or stop. its rare but can happen.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
I think people know, they just don’t care.
Pristine_Paper_9095@reddit
I’m calling it, you’re gonna get flamed in this sub bc people don’t know the difference between an express highway and a commercial highway. if there’s two lanes on your side and you’re ever in the left and not driving like a maniac, Reddit will freak
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
It's not about driving like a maniac. It's about passing. OP wasn't passing. OP shouldn't remain in the passing lane(s).
MickiesMajikKingdom@reddit
That's not a passing lane.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
Every lane going the same way but to the left of another lane, and not an express lane / turning lane / other specially designated lane is a passing lane.
Original_Lord_Turtle@reddit
Again, in Tennessee, that is absolutely not true. Drivers may, and do drive in both lanes on roads like this. And regardless, there's excuse for passing in the center/turn lane.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
Everywhere in space and time, it is absolutely true. Drivers may and do all kinds of things, in many different jurisdictions, across space and time. That doesn't make it untrue.
This doesn't make sense. Assuming you meant no excuse, there is no excuse, and no excuse needed. It still doesn't make sense to say. It was arguably dangerous. Going slow in the passing lane for no reason is also dangerous. You're literally killing the people who are waiting on you to realize the truth and GTFO the passing lane.
Original_Lord_Turtle@reddit
The inside travel lane IS NOT a passing only lane, nor is it intended to to be, let alone used as one on a road like this in Tennessee. Dash cam driver was not in the wrong.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
doesn't exist. Stop using title case for regular sentences.
Do you mean legally? We both agree.
Do you mean morally/ethically? No. The point of getting in cars is to get to not-here (wherever each driver is going) as fast as possible, while trading that against the risk of death and injury at some reasonable rate.
I am one of them. They're both morons. They're both "at fault". I don't think the dash cam driver caused the other moron to make his move, but he did play a part. If he'd been driving correctly, then the other moron (probably) wouldn't have used the center/left turn lane to overtake him.
Original_Lord_Turtle@reddit
According to who? I don't know any other way to say it:
In Tennessee, on a road such as the one shown in the video, there is no "passing lane". In other words: BOTH LANES ARE USED FOR NORMAL TRAVEL. THERE IS ZERO EXPECTATION BY REASONABLE DRIVERS THAT SLOWER TRAFFIC ON SUCH A ROAD STAYS TO THE RIGHT.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
No person. The principles of good driving.
On every road, such as the one shown in the video, every lane not designated for "express", "carpool", "turning across the midline (left in the US)", etc is a passing lane.
Correct. And NORMAL TRAVEL means STAYING THE FUCK TO THE RIGHT EXCEPT TO TURN LEFT (IMMEDIATELY) OR OVERTAKE SOMEONE.
Please stop typing in caps. It's not English.
SO YOU'RE CALLING ME AN UNREASONABLE DRIVER? I DON'T CARE HOW YOU DEFINE REASONABLE, OR WHETHER YOU PLACE ME OUTSIDE THAT CATEGORY IN YOUR SEMANTICS. SAY SOMETHING MEANINGFUL OF STFU!
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
On dual-lane arterial roads (like this appears to be), the left lane is used for passing - not travel.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
In Tennessee, when there are left turn lanes along the road, the “stay right” law does not apply.
Original_Lord_Turtle@reddit
In Tennessee - where OP is - no, they are not. Ask me how I know.
SOTG_Duncan_Idaho@reddit
You called it. Gotta love drivers whose idea of sharing the road is "if you aren't speeding as much as me, GTFO the road!"
SeawardFriend@reddit
It’s also common courtesy to move to the right lane if someone is driving faster than you. Heck, not ever really a courtesy, more of a way of defensive driving and keeping yourself safe from idiots like in the clip.
SOTG_Duncan_Idaho@reddit
It's not just common courtesy, but the law in most places. But not on all roads! Typically only on limited access highways or on highways that are above a certain speed limit.
It would be a terrible idea to require "keep right except to pass" on roads like OP posted, because it is not a limited access highway and left turns are abundant. It's a city street!
No, it is not the law nor common courtesy to "keep right except to pass" on a city street. As usual, people get an idea in their heads "keep right except to pass" and don't bother to actually understand that law/rule/courtesy and assume it's always the case.
While defensive driving is always a good idea, you take it into victim blaming territory with what you say. The maniac in OPs video is driving is a completely reckless way, and is the only one in the video that did anything wrong at all (unlawful or even just rude).
VampArcher@reddit
Yep.
It's not even just being polite, it's being smart. People are way too competitive on the road, not wanting people to pass. If someone wants to go fast, let them, change lanes let them to overtake if possible. Problem solved. People too stubborn to get over and complaining people are tailing them when they are the one blocking the flow of traffic are the people who get into accidents.
lets_just_n0t@reddit
Not true at all. Stop gatekeeping a legitimate issue.
There’s a huge difference between an actual highway, and surface streets. Keep right except to pass doesn’t apply here.
It would however apply to a highway, which is what you’ll see people bitching about. And is a legit issue that needs as much attention as it can get.
But you say the comment in the tone of a real world left lane camper, so I don’t expect a constructive response here.
elephantbloom8@reddit
This is very region specific and definitely not a universal rule.
Some "highways" look exactly like this and still have the "keep right except to pass" signs in NJ. Look at Route 30, 38, 70, etc
cryptolyme@reddit
People still got turn left
elephantbloom8@reddit
Correct. But they need to stay to the right until it's time to turn. Staying in the left for miles isn't legal in my state.
AgentUnknown821@reddit
I take Reddit hates Slow Highway Drivers
ponyo_impact@reddit
I think everyone except slow highway drivers hate slow highway drivers.
I have yet to meet someone irl that doesnt bitch about them
Man0fGreenGables@reddit
They hate people that don’t speed.
Ok_Pen9437@reddit
No - people hate those who are inconsiderate to other road users.
A good example is a car traveling at exactly the speed limit on a busy road with a queue of cars behind them, but does not pull over to let them pass. The reverse of this applies too, if you are tailgating despite having room to pass you’re a rude person.
Another example is a bike riding in the middle of the automobile lane when a bike lane has been provided.
Eloquent2714@reddit
Yes, they should pull over to let them speed because that's super considerate and totally normal thing to do. /s
SeawardFriend@reddit
Well if you’re not going to speed, literally 90% of other people are so stay in the right lane and you can go the speed limit while people use the passing lane to you know, pass you?
Kennys-Chicken@reddit
Nope, I don’t give a shit if you want your drive to take you an extra hour as you piddle around at 10 mph under the speed limit. Just get the fuck out of the passing lane so that the rest of us can go around you and get on with our days.
Sh4wnSm1th@reddit
To add on to this. You can piddle and look at the wildlife all you want. But if there are people behind you off of a highway, pull over & let them pass you or speed up and move through. There are too many out there that don't understand not everyone driving out there is just driving to drive. Many of us have places to be or things to do. It's not enjoyable waiting behind you to piddle about and to be oblivious or worse wave and say stupid shit, if you just want to take your time, do so without impeding others.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
No, just left lane losers.
Pristine_Paper_9095@reddit
Not a left lane camper, just pointing out the bias of this sub. Did I hit a nerve?
TVsKevin@reddit
You're just dealing with a lot of new drivers that only think in absolutes.
Pristine_Paper_9095@reddit
I’m appalled at how many people don’t know what a commercial highway is, or zoning laws in general tbh. I think also it’s a lot of new drivers
blakeh95@reddit
I mean, it's immediately obvious that you don't know the actual laws. Highway means any public right of way. Surface streets are highways, and "keep right" does apply.
TVsKevin@reddit
Oh please, do tell the laws in all 56 states, district and inhabited territories in the US since you know the actual "law"(s).

Part 3.
blakeh95@reddit
Part 2. (remaining parts in progress).
blakeh95@reddit
Here's Part 1.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
So in my state the “stay right except to pass” laws have exceptions. Section 5b. This road fits that description therefore the law does not apply. https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/title-55/chapter-8/part-2/section-55-8-204/
blakeh95@reddit
Oh sure, there can be exceptions to specific roads in specific conditions.
So if OP had said they were turning left and therefore that's why they needed to be in the left lane, I would agree that TCA 55-8-204(b)(5) applied. Also, by its own terms, TCA 55-8-204 itself only applies on "interstate and multilane divided highways."
But that's not the only law that applies. See also TCA 55-8-115(b), which applies "upon all roadways":
Again, this law permits drivers to be in the left lane even if they are slower when they are already passing another vehicle or preparing to turn left.
My complaint with the above comment is that it is trying to say that the "slower traffic keep right" law doesn't apply if a road isn't a "highway," using some definition of highway that they have in their head. That is simply not true. All public roads are highways in Tennessee. In fact, Tennessee explicitly defines "highway" and "street" as meaning the same thing! See TCA 55-1-116:
RedditUserSnap@reddit
The situation is pretty pedantic but I think what you're saying is generally true.
If this were a two lane two way highway, it's pretty unambiguous. If it were a 2 lane one way road or a freeway it'd also be unambiguous. But when there's a middle turn lane or a 3rd lane added to a highway a lot of times people feel the rules should change a bit.
I think those laws you and OP posted even say that you should be in the right lane unless you're going to be passing or using the left lane to turn soon. (Or if traffic volume is so high that it's not possible to get over)
ximyr@reddit
It is true. I can immediately scroll down and find comments that justify his prediction.
ponyo_impact@reddit
Yup. My area has tons of these kinda roads. 55 with 2-3 lanes but tons of stop lights. You have people in the left lane going slow as fuck cuz they are turning left at the next intersection. Its not like the real Expressway where that happens less often.
SeawardFriend@reddit
You mean a freeway and a highway? A highway is a major road that connects cities or other locations. A freeway is a highway with controlled access, no traffic signals, and multiple lanes for traffic.
Pristine_Paper_9095@reddit
Look up commercial highway. It’s related to zoning. I chose those words for a reason
teajay530@reddit
most people wouldn’t call this a highway to begin with even though it can be called one. with that being said, on a high speed highway, lane discipline is very important. lane discipline doesn’t matter here.
Equivalent_Dig_5059@reddit
No people very well know the difference
Just move over bro, it’s not that real, let them go
furthestpoint@reddit
What's a commercial highway?
A highway concerned with or engaged in commerce?
Pristine_Paper_9095@reddit
A highway built in a commercial zone. As defined by local zoning laws
playnmt@reddit (OP)
I know it, but left turns happen 🤷♀️
Ok-Serve415@reddit
Mhm
Psych0matt@reddit
This has happened twice in the last few days, for people only to get two cars ahead, still in the long line of traffic 🤷♂️
Battlecat3714@reddit
The douche noodle are the two cars pacing each other driving side by side when nobody is in front of them yet people are behind them trying to go….left lane camper needs to either pass & get over or slow down & get over. The left lane is for crime & if you can’t hang then know your place otherwise get used to being tailgated or passed in the suicide lane….
Same_Revolution4666@reddit
everyone hating ur comment because they drive slow cars and are jealous of ppl with better cars tryna pass
MikeWANN@reddit
This is your video? GTFO of the passing lane, then you can complain about the person going around you. Move over so faster traffic can pass.
foamy_da_skwirrel@reddit
I have literally never heard this terminology before
Same_Revolution4666@reddit
ur also going 30mph in the left lane
Aromatic-Rhubarb-676@reddit
If it’s late at night and you’re going 5-10 below in an area I’m familiar with, I will be illegally passing you. Everything is situational. Rules are meant to be broken
knockatize@reddit
That stunod in the left lane in front of you is camping, and is also a bad driver.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
This is a side street in town with left turn lanes, so “camping” doesn’t really apply.
knockatize@reddit
It still does. I have roads like this too, and scared drivers who need to make a left turn…eventually… glom onto the left lane as soon as they can, as if their lives depended on it, even if the left they need is ten miles down the road.
Asking them to keep right until they need to turn left is like expecting Tom Waits to hit a Freddie Mercury high note.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
People tend to stick to left on these roads to avoid those people turning right into driveways and parking lots. And in heavy traffic, it can be near impossible to get over when needed.
mellywheats@reddit
this - i like being in the lane i need to be in ASAP bc i hate the stress of needing to get into the other lane and not being able to do it in time. So as soon as i can get into the lane i need to be in, i’ll go. it’s not “camping in the left lane” if i need to turn left lmao.
Mr_Candlestick@reddit
That's fine if you actually drive like you're in the left lane and don't hold up cars behind you. If you're in the left lane taking your sweet time and pacing the cars in the right lane then you're a bad driver.
notomatostoday@reddit
“You’re a bad driver”
Man, fuck your time and your pleasantries. Why are those my responsibility? Go through me and face the legal consequences or enjoy staring at my ass
mellywheats@reddit
i just go speed of traffic most of the time 🤷🏻♀️
Man0fGreenGables@reddit
“Too bad, I’m in a rush to be parked in front of you at the next red light.”
---Imperator---@reddit
But you're not in heavy traffic in this video, so why didn't you move over to the right lane briefly to allow the other car to pass?
lets_just_n0t@reddit
Yeah, so “left lane is for passing” doesn’t apply on surface streets like this. If you think it does, then you’re the bad driver.
That being said, it’s common courtesy to not ride beside someone like a moron.
Diligent-Version8283@reddit
God there's so much shit I don't understand about driving beacuse I was never taught. Are you telling me on regular street roads that are not highway related, there is no such thing as camping left lane?
mellywheats@reddit
this is what we’re saying. if it’s not a highway and there’s no “keep right except to pass” signs then it’s not camping
Diligent-Version8283@reddit
Except now I know that's not true. Surface streets are legally considered highways.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
In my state, the “slow poke” law or sometimes known as the “stay right except to pass” law doesn’t apply to this street. Every state has their laws written differently, so this may not apply everywhere. Section 5b clearly states that roads designed to exit or to be turned left off of are exempt from the law. https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/title-55/chapter-8/part-2/section-55-8-204/
mellywheats@reddit
residential/city areas are not considered highways.
Diligent-Version8283@reddit
Every State defines "highway" as some version of "every way that is publicly maintained and open to vehicular travel." Unless you live in an HOA or private roadway, the street outside your house is a "highway" for legal purposes, even if you wouldn't call it that.
blakeh95@reddit
Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
It's not common courtesy, it's the entire principle of safety and speed, the only two goals that make sense for people trying to get somewhere they aren't.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
In my state, the “slow poke” law does not apply to this road. Section B5. https://law.justia.com/codes/tennessee/title-55/chapter-8/part-2/section-55-8-204/
Syandris@reddit
No it doesn't. Your precious autobahn left lane doesn't work in these situations. You aren't on a freeway or interstate. Calm down. Your analogy is as stupid as your reasoning. It's pricks like you that use shoulders and turn lanes because your driving feelings got hurt.
violentfelon@reddit
The tailgaters and left lane gatekeepers force some of us to get into the left lane a few miles before our destination so we can still have the option of merging into the turn lane. If we didn’t move to the passing lane early the tailgaters will always block us into the right lane constantly pacing us because they don’t want anyone in front of them.
MickiesMajikKingdom@reddit
That's not justification for passing in the center turn lane.
violentfelon@reddit
but it is. When other motorists drive and behave a certain way (gatekeeping passing lane for example) the rest of us are forced to adapt or literally be forced off the road and into the ditch.
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
Can you be more articulate? Take the OP video, there are 5 lanes. A right lane and left lane in each direction, and a turn lane in the center.
When you say "left lane" do you actually mean the left lane or do you mean the turn lane?
If you're turning left, you stay in the left lane until your turn, then you get into the turn lane and wait for an opportunity to turn without risking a collision with oncoming traffic. It's not rocket surgery.
violentfelon@reddit
"left lane" is referring to the passing lane. "turn lane" in reference to the suicide lane as it's called on the internet. There is a suicide lane on a major highway right in front of my work. I have heard outside my office some really bad head on collisions out there! Drivers are literally playing chicken in the turn lane to see who can get there first or whatever and really messing each other up. Medians would help! Further up the road that same suicide lane is directly in front of the busiest walmart in the city. You can only imagine the absolute chaos that occurs in that lane!
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
Again, this isn't a real traffic term (it's as slang as "suicide lane"), but I do believe I understand what you mean.
Then yeah, I think you're just fine. There is nothing wrong with driving in the left lane if you plan on eventually turning left. There are literally no restrictions on that. The issue comes from people who enter the turn lane and then merge back into the left lane without turning. That is both illegal and dangerous.
violentfelon@reddit
oh yeah that sounds horrifying lol
ryanoc3rus@reddit
that's what you were seemingly justifying earlier -- moving into the center turn lane in order to just pass and move back over - aka NOT turn.
SeawardFriend@reddit
What do you mean? The passing lane is definitely a thing! The leftmost lane on a multiple lane road is considered the passing lane and slower traffic needs to keep to the right whenever possible.
Generated-Nouns-257@reddit
It's not a technical traffic term. It's absolutely a colloquial term people often use. It just doesn't have a single uniform definition. Some people mean only the left most lane. Some people mean any lane to the left of where you're driving. That's all. I absolutely don't mean to imply it's some weird term I've never heard before, it's just not great for communication because people from different regions mean different things when they say it.
ReverseFez@reddit
It absolutely is a technical traffic term, and is mentioned in laws:
https://dds.georgia.gov/section-5-continued-keep-right-except-pass
PyleanCow06@reddit
Most passing lane laws are only applicable on highways with high speed limits. Not city streets where people are turning into and out of businesses.
MickiesMajikKingdom@reddit
I specifically said center turn lane to avoid ambiguity.
MickiesMajikKingdom@reddit
You're arguing that people not driving the way you like is justification for you breaking the law.
VampArcher@reddit
I work in a city that is almost entirely old people who are 40+ and I know this pain.
The right lane is usually the fastest lane on the road, everyone passes on the right, there's always this long line grandmas going 5 under in the left lane for 10+ miles who refuse to get over every single day, no matter where you are. By the time I get within 3 miles of the left turn to my job, there is this parade of 30+ cars going 15 under the limit in the left lane nobody can pass, basically forcing me to get over a few intersections early because not one of them will let me over.
PalpitationFine@reddit
You're not forced to do anything if your goal is saving time. Good drivers miss exits and turn around, bad drivers do dumb shit
K_Linkmaster@reddit
I get what you are saying. Offensive driving is looked down on though. Even when offense is the best defense, you will get shit on for not hitting the brakes and just stopping behind nutjobs/clueless drivers.
longtimerlance@reddit
I always make ample use of the horn when people do this.
JabbaTheHutt12345@reddit
Once did that and they ended up brake checking me which proves they weren't in a rush at all... they just want control and think they are more superior than others.
ponyo_impact@reddit
its somewhat common in my area for people making lefts to use the "suicide lane" as like a temporary place while waiting for the lane to open. Havent seen an accident yet but it will happen one day im sure.
RubberBabyBuggyBmprs@reddit
That's because there's no such thing as a "suicide lane" it's called a "turning lane" and exists entirely so that people can make turns from it.
You haven't seen an accident yet because drivers are using it for it's intended purpose.
It's a bit disconcerting to not know this if you have a drivers license
Gentleman-vinny@reddit
Actually they are a reckless driver. License should be revoked asap.
TVsKevin@reddit
Yeah, they got a lot more issues than just passing in the left turn lane going there.
JabbaTheHutt12345@reddit
Almost everyone in NY drives like this. It's a pain to deal with them everyday
Parking-Ideal-7195@reddit
What in the name of sainted fuck is a 'suicide lane'?
playnmt@reddit (OP)
It’s a turn lane that can be used by cars going in either direction. So if two people enter it at the same time going opposite directions, head-on collision will commence.
Parking-Ideal-7195@reddit
Wow! What a stupid way to design a road, with overlapping turn zones instead of being clearly marked 😯😑
That explains the AI idiots in driving games though. Thank fuck we don't have that sort of system operating here...
douche-canoe71@reddit
I approve of labeling the other driver as a Douche Noodle. Solid.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
GTFO of the left lane. You're not passing.
mellywheats@reddit
it isn’t a highway
blakeh95@reddit
Yes, it is. "Highway" and "street" are synonymous and interchangeable.
Name a state and I'll cite their code.
TVsKevin@reddit
All of them. Walk the walk.
blakeh95@reddit
Done.
AL to DC
FL to KS
KY to MO
MT to ND
OH to TN
TX to WY
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
So what? The whole point of multiple lanes is to flow. The only way to flow is to designate one direction faster / more-passing than the other. It makes sense in drive-on-the-right places to make the rightmost the slowest, and the leftmost the fastest / most-passy.
mellywheats@reddit
if you’re turning left, you’re gonna be in the left lane
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
On this road, you're gonna be in the "suicide" lane, the leftmost lane. Not the lane OP was hogging.
mellywheats@reddit
if you were turning left at that exact spot, if you’re turning left up the road, you’re also gonna be in the left lane.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
I don't know what your sentence means. If OP was going to turn left, they can wait til 3-5seconds before their turn, then get in the "suicide" lane (from the rightmost lane). They could have spent AT LEAST 35seconds that we saw in the rightmost lane, letting faster traffic overtake them in the passing lane.
---Imperator---@reddit
"But there's always a risk when turning lanes!" seem to be a common argument for many here. Honestly, if you're not confident about changing lanes in perfect driving conditions, while on a road with low traffic like the one in this video, then you shouldn't be driving at all.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
100%
playnmt@reddit (OP)
No, but I was approaching my turn.
Medical-Effective-30@reddit
For minutes... GTFO of the left lane. You're not turning for >42 seconds.
SeawardFriend@reddit
2 things… First off. Dude could’ve easily passed you on the right so idk what they were thinking there. Second off, if you’re going to drive slower than the majority of traffic and leave 10 cars worth of space, I suggest you avoid the left lane because that’s the place these kinds of crazy drivers want to be. While it’s unacceptable behavior to pass like that, I do understand the frustration because the supposed passing lane was moving quite slow.
IamTroyOfTroy@reddit
Wth is a suicide lane?
Anteater-Inner@reddit
You’re not passing anyone. Why are you in the left lane? Perhaps if you weren’t in the way, this person might not have chosen the dangerous option.
TVsKevin@reddit
You're getting downvoted but you are correct. If you drive defensively and keep the other driver in mind, even if what they're doing isn't the correct or safest course of action, you'll have a much more stress-free trip.
playnmt@reddit (OP)
First, this is not a passing lane, second, I was about to go around the two cars to my right, when the white car moved over and I backed off to give this guy some room. Three my turn was coming up, why would I move to the right for a few seconds only to move back to the left for invisible traffic? There was nobody else behind me.
Anteater-Inner@reddit
First, yes it is. Others have posted the laws from your area that define the left lane as a passing one.
You were passing the red vehicle that was going faster than you?
You should stay in the right lane until your turn is coming up. You said yourself there was no one else behind you, so there’d have been no one in your way when you needed to change lanes.
YTA.
cryptolyme@reddit
YTA!
Anteater-Inner@reddit
Thanks for noticing. 🤗
cryptolyme@reddit
To turn left
eastsidejamaican@reddit
you drive slow stay in the right lane
fitfulbrain@reddit
Too slow on the left lane. Fair game.
Tychonoir@reddit
Did you miss that there was a car in front of him? At the time of the pass, he was 1 second behind the car in front - how would he go faster?
fitfulbrain@reddit
A car did got right in front of op. This car is faster and has space to insert. If it were on the freeway, cars will keep getting in front of op.
RedditUserSnap@reddit
I think your response is a bit extreme.
If there were no left lane, I'd see what OP's doing as creating an acceptable amount of space between him and the vehicle in front of him.
I see the problem where on the freeway in an equivalent situation, he's going slower than the vehicle in the right lane, so it'd make sense for the driver to switch back to the right hand side and leave the left lane available for passing.
fitfulbrain@reddit
I did not comment on anybody's driving. I'm saying some drivers are like that, getting ahead is the only command in their heads. It's dangerous. It's illegal. But they can't help. If there's no suicide lane, they will tailgate the cars in each lane until they speed up or slow down so they can pass. Or they drive in the wrong side of the road.
RustfootII@reddit
If you ain't first you're last.
xczechr@reddit
Yeah, that's a dumb move considering how well traffic is flowing.
jlysc@reddit
The person just driving along in the left lane (not passing) when there is no one in the right lane, is the real problem. Have you never noticed signs saying, “keep right, pass left”? That’s what they mean.
UAmAnMoreOn@reddit
You’re a bad driver for camping in the left lane
Amphernee@reddit
Just move over and let people pass. My dad does the same thing then calls people bad drivers. The excuse of not wanting to travel in the right lane is bogus. You could’ve moved over and moved right back to the left after they passed.
LingeringHumanity@reddit
Why are all the drivers on the left lane and only one on the right. And why is everyone one on the left driving like a slug? Lol
Jealous-Associate-41@reddit
Ok, who's the douch noodle, the driver with the dash cam?
---Imperator---@reddit
I understand that you might want to camp in the left lane to avoid right turning vehicles on the right lane, or if you're approaching your left turn soon.
But if you see a fast-moving vehicle tailing you on the left lane, then just move over to the right for a few seconds, allowing that car to pass you, then move back to the left lane afterwards.
thebigbossyboss@reddit
Why is you in the fast lane
AtYiE45MAs78@reddit
It's are not is.
FrostWyrm98@reddit
I had a minor stroke from the first comment and an even larger one from this thank you lmfao
floppydisk2-0@reddit
yep, some kid drove two blocks down the suicide lane to cut in line past the traffic so they could turn left. Ended up crashing into my dad head on as he was turning left from a parking lot and completely totaled his car. Luckily, my dad wasn't hurt, but if he were angled a little different, it easily could have been way worse. Don't be a dick and wait in traffic like everyone else.
QLDZDR@reddit
I think we saw that in Capa-la-ba Queensland
floppydisk2-0@reddit
this was in LA, but I guess that only adds to my point 😅
FamiliarRadio9275@reddit
I’m confused those two in front of you are pacing each other which is pointless when the white car got over, from my view you’re not passing, and that grey car is wild. Moral of the story, YTA the other cars are the AH too and the tree on the right is also an AH
WorkingDogAddict1@reddit
Why is everyone going like 4 mph?
playnmt@reddit (OP)
We had just come off a stoplight. The white car, who seemed lost, was speeding up when the douche came flying around laying on his horn, I backed off to give the guy room, as I didn’t want any part of what he was selling.
Diligent-Version8283@reddit
Why are you camping left lane?
