F-5E SSBD

This heavily modified F-5E was designed to reduce the sound produced by sonic booms by employing a distinctive “duck bill” nose, in a similar way to the later X-59 QUESST. I saw this at the Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum in Titusville, FL while I was in the area to watch the goes-u launch.

Similar logic to the British Handley Page Victor?
Foreign_Athlete_7693@reddit
Nah the nose was just shaped like that to fit the radar and electronics etc underneath the cabin
DaveB44@reddit
The Victor was not supersonic, although one did exceed Mach 1 in a somewhat uncontrolled dive:

I remember seeing this jet parked near my work on a base one night. It was just the silhouette, and it looked like a chef's knife with a tail. When the sun rose, I grabbed the tail number and found out this was a thing! When I see Boom! in the news, I always go back to that night!

I know the F-5 is the ancestor of the F/A-18
I didn't know the the ancestor of the F-5 was a Habsburg.

Well, I guess since one of their descendants is an F1 driver…

This fucker looks amphibious somehow and it pisses me off that it isn’t!
James_TF2@reddit
Looks like I need to make a kitbash now that you’ve planted that idea in my head.

Glad that I could inspire someone, lol.
patrickthunnus@reddit
Does that mean that conventional cockpit windshields contribute strongly to sonic boom formation?
LockPickingPilot@reddit
They did it. They finally cross bred a fighter jet and a kayak
graytotoro@reddit
Did you also look at the XP-82 and dream of buying it?

I can’t help but read “SSBD” as anything but “Super Slow But Deadly” /s

Valiant air command museum!
RevolutionaryGur5932@reddit
It almost looks like the hull of a boat.
I doubt this thing is amphibious though.
Ian1231100@reddit
That's a pelican
PhoenixFox@reddit
Oh, they've moved it! It was tucked away beside the restoration workshop when I was there last year.
