Going through a divorce. Need song suggestions for a playlist.

Hey y'all.
Was forced to file on my wife of 20 years a couple of months ago. As I'm working through this process, I find that music is really helping manage my emotions on a day to day basis.
I'm looking for songs of a certain tenor: hopeful, confident, un-broken, un-defeated, not necessarily angry but that's ok, too.
Any era or genre is in play.
Here's a few I have right now:
Juice WRLD, The Light.
Fun., Carry On.
Paula Cole, I Don't Wanna Wait.
Adam Cohen, Cry Opehlia.
The Clash, Train in Vain.
TIA.

Last Day of Our Acquaintance- Sinead O’Connor
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
This one or Emperor's New Clothes.
meahern_por@reddit
Yeah, for sure. And while we’re talking about Sinead…she also shares vocals on a song by The The called Kingdom of Rain. I think it’s a perfect fit for this list.
Really sorry you’re going through this. Glad that music helps you deal.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I appreciate you.
eventualguide0@reddit
I used to get this song stuck in my head the last day of every semester when my students were turning final research papers in.
hdufort@reddit
Neil Halstead, "Two Stones in my Pocket".
It is a delicate, very helpful song about traveling the world to mend your heart.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Great one. It's on.
Tacos_143@reddit
“The Bottom Line” by Big Audio Dynamite Lyrics excerpt: When you reach the bottom line The only thing to do is climb Pick yourself up of the floor
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Perfect. Thanks.
colt86@reddit
Stupid Girl by Garbage?
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Perfect.
docsiege@reddit
for my divorce there was lots of Elliott Smith for the sad, and lots of NIN for the mad.
big hugs to you. divorce is hard, no matter what the circumstances. make sure to protect yourself and not give up things you don't have to just to be nice.
drinks and/or commiseration with friends or acquaintances can also be very healing.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thank you!
blueflame7810@reddit
The song that helped me the most was Joy to You Baby by Josh Ritter
Whatever resentment or hurt or anger or regret you have will still be there, but this song reminded me not to cling to the negatives
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Nice one. It's on.
DMmeDuckPics@reddit
Poe - Hello (full album) 1995 - it's the full breakup album. Has your rage songs, grief and in the end hope.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
New band to me. Fly Away might be the last song on the play list.
Thank you.
jeneh17@reddit
This is a GREAT album.
t00zday@reddit
FREEDOM 90 George Michael
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
That's going on. Thanks.
Substantial_Leg6852@reddit
That whole album really.
Some good reflective songs, but overall a very content vibe.
JoeMillersHat@reddit
She fucking hates me -Puddle of Mud
You're always gonna be a ho - Steel Panther
GnR Anything from Appetite except SCOM, I used to love her, Pretty Tied Up, Coma Hanoi Rocks -Blvd of Broken dreams, Mystery City
Motley Crüe - Don't go away mad, Shout at the Devil
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
She Hates Me is a no-brainer. Thanks.
JoeyHandsomeJoe@reddit
I just want to say as a fellow member of the minority (husbands who file on their wives)
Don't get long-term involved with someone two months after you move out, no matter how attracted you are. Your sense of perspective is injured right now, and way too many single women our age are single through ~~no~~ fault of their own (I mean, your ex-wife is now part of that population). Avoid committing at all costs until you get to the point where you are comfortable enough being single that you don't need a playlist's help.
That said, Morcheeba - Undress Me Now. Manifest a moment of perfection in the future (remember, FAR future) instead of combating the flawed present.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thanks , my friend. I appreciate it.
slmansfield@reddit
I like high energy fighting songs, with lyrics to match. Genre and language less important.
Not Today - BTS (listen to song with English translation) Non, je ne regretted rien - Edith Piaf (again…English translation) We”re not gonna take it - Twisted Sister Killing in the name - RATM (explicit version so you can practice your new mantra 17 times) I won’t back down - Tom Petty Seven Nation Army - White Stripes We will rock you / We are the champions (just like the 45) - Queen I will survive - Gloria Gayner I”m still standing - Elton John The Pretender - Foo Fighers Ha Ha You’re Dead - Green Day Wherever I may Roam - Metallica I’m coming out - Diana Ross IDOL - BTS (again, English lyrics) WIN - ATEEZ (again, English lyrics)
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Nice. Rage is getting on there.
Hustle787878@reddit
My friend, you’ll get through this. One day it’ll just be a shitty memory, and you’ll find your happy. Until then, these helped get me through:
“No More Drama” — Mary J. Bilge “What Can I Do if the Fire Goes Out” — Gang of Youths “Blue Water” — George Strait “Hurricane” — I Prevail “Gfy” — Dennis Lloyd “I Wish I Wasn’t” — Heather Hadley
That list is eclectic as fuck, so hopefully you’ll find something in your genre.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thanks. I appreciate it.
BooBeans71@reddit
Unstoppable by Sia is one of the songs on my playlist. My husband left after his dad passed and isn’t coming back. I’m absolutely wrecked, so you probably don’t want anything else from my playlist.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
I am so sorry.
I am with you.
LLL-cubed-@reddit
Stevie Nicks - Landslide (appropriate since you’re 20 yrs into a marriage)…it helped me a ton while going thru a 20+ year marital dissolution.
Best wishes and warm regards as you navigate this new chapter.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thank you. It's in the mix.
TruCarMa@reddit
Salt in My Tears by Martin Brinley
No More ‘I Love Yous’ by Annie Lennox
Santa Monica by Everclear
Some Nights by Fun.
the 1 - Taylor Swift
Truth Hurts - Lizzo
-justkeepswimming-@reddit
I'd also say We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift.
Also All Will be well by the Gabe Dixon Band.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
TS has to make it on there somewhere. I've quoted that song multiple times during this process.......
ImHereForThePies@reddit
Lizzo! Yes! Truth Hurts then Good As Hell!
And Dua Lipa, Don't Start
I'm gping through a divorce now, it should be coming to an end soon, so BIG changes are coming too! I'm excited and terrified!
Best of luck, OP! It hurts and it sucks but it might be a good thing too. As scared and uncomfortable as I am, I'm looking forward to all the changes too.
Stay hydrated and take care of yourself!
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Thanks, Friend.
AnitaPeaDance@reddit
One More Minute, Weird Al
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Holy Fuck. That is fucking perfect.
wmnoe@reddit
I forgot about that, it's so good.
"I'd rather clean all the bathrooms at grand central station then spend one more minute with you"
"I'd rather die in a swimming pool filled with doubled edged razor blades...."
Absotivly_Posolutly@reddit
My heart is broken for you tonight, brother.
I managed to live though a divorce 13 years ago that was 100% my fault. But, 12 years ago I managed to salvage what I thought was irreparably broken, and I have never had more love and joy in my life.
Every situation is different and I have no idea what you've been through. I wish I had a song to share as it is truly the medicine that heals me, but I don't.
Just keep it positive and stay away from the dark places, will ya?
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Doing my best, my Friend.
Thank you!
fitbit10k@reddit
This is gonna sound cheesy, but after getting my heart totally crushed by my son's dad, listening to Elton John's I'm Still Standing helped me through the breakup. The further I got away from the relationship, and the more I accomplished on my own while being a single parent, the more meaningful the song became.
It's been 30 years since the break up and I still credit that song for getting me on the path of happiness.
UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
It's going on the list. TY.

UnimportantOutcome67@reddit (OP)
Yaaas.
CHRIS7OS@reddit
Underrated comment here. I went through divorce 4 years ago and SOOO many songs trigger tough memories. I can’t or won’t listen to some bands anymore. Doesn’t impact me like it used to but yeah, music and memory are very strongly linked.
virrk@reddit
Music I chose to listen is fine.
Stuff introduced to me by them? Couldn't listen to it then, certain artists I just don't really enjoy anymore, and certain songs decades later still don't enjoy.

I have that with Spice Girl songs. Mind, they’re not seemingly due for a revival, so might be worth trying?

Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head, BJ Thomas. I had a FP windup thing that would play it when I was really little and my mom would sing it to me. It's always been my get up, brush myself off, and keep going song ever since, because "it won't be long till happiness steps up to greet me." It can't rain forever, internet stranger friend.

The Fragile is good too but some of it might be a bit angry for what you are looking for.
Somewhat Damaged captured that sense of betrayal for me decades ago. I had both this and Pretty Hate Machine in rotation A LOT at the time.

When I went through a heartache, Train Drops of Jupiter was a good one. I can’t even tell you what any other song is outside of Drops of Jupiter, but I listened to that album so much. I don’t even know why I chose it lol. It’s light, even, uses notes with positive vibes and tones. It helped shape my mood to be pleasant and even, instead of bouncing to extremes.

It’s not specifically Gen X but when I was going through my divorce (I was the initiator) around 2015-2016 I listened to the shit out of Jason Isbell “Southeastern”. For some reason it had popped up on my Spotify discover and I spend many a fall night staring into space by my fire pit listening to it. It hit on a lot of levels, full of pain and beauty and yearning and regret
branigan_aurora@reddit
Pink "So What"

Beyoncé "Ave Maria"
Taylor Swift "Blank Space" & "All Too Well"

SplashiestMonk@reddit
My divorce playlist was almost exclusively angry grrl music - several of the artists you mentioned plus Halsey (“You Should Be Sad”), Demi Lovato (“Really Don’t Care”), and a few others. Taylor Swift’s “I Forgot that You Existed” is another great one to include.
catrules618@reddit
I'm often surprised Taylor Swift can find guys who will date her. Because you absolutely know that whenever you break up, she will lyrically drag you to hell and back, and every one of those songs will chart top 40.
I'm lying. Of course there are a gazillion men who think it would never happen to them. And they risk it.

Eddie Vedder and Neil Finn “Throw your arms around me”. Holy HELL those harmonies. Plan some time to finish that squinch of bourbon you’ve been holding onto and then to cry real good. And then get off the floor and hit the gym you daisy.
That Adele song. You know the one. My choice is the 5th hole of a golf course, preferably with one gram of shrooms onboard, plus wine. Usually a par 5, no one around. Let it out. Fuck her. Sing it fully, hammer. You’re no daisy.
The Sword, “Night City” on repeat in the morning. Coffee, healthy breakfast, shit, shower and shave. Read the lyrics for one round before you leave the house. Storm the castle, champ. Positive mental attitude.
Descendents, “Coolidge” on your way to work. you can only be a victim if you… admit defeat” The definition of YOU is yours, and yours alone.
I’m sad as fuck this has happened to you, and would wave a magic wand if I could. But the fact of the matter is this: just as we all have all DAY to be on-time and only one minute to be late, our lives are in OUR hands.
I was at where you are now, back in 2008. I wallowed in ALL of the emotions until I got up and got back at it. Music helped me IMMENSELY. I hope my handful here helps you, too. You’re no daisy. PITTER PATTER GET AT ‘ER.

These are nominally for women, but I don't know why men can't take these lessons to heart! Miley Cyrus's "Flowers" -- you can cook yourself pancakes!
Also, "Thank You, Next" by Ariana Grande. There's a modicum of gratitude to each ex for the lessons you learned, but most importantly, a looking-forward to better relationships in the future.
And, David Bowie's "Strangers When We Meet." I like the Buddha of Suburbia version slightly better, but they both are great.
