Gen Z and I like Gen X more than my own generation

I'm 19 and browse this sub frequently and it made me realize how much I like Gen X more than my own. Everytime I browse the Gen Z subreddit it's always filled with nothing but shitty doomerism and ragebait. Whenever I look at this sub, I feel like I have so much more in common with Gen X and make me wish I was born one instead of Z (despite the fact I'm queer). You guys actually have fun and enjoy life, and your music and culture is just so much cooler and better.
I hate my own generation so much. I honestly think my Gen Z is objectively the worst generation to have existed and that we should just be annihilated from existance. There is nothing good about us.

Don't be too concerned with generational affiliation, focus on who you are and enjoy life.Ā
Kind of a side note but when a lot of GenX were teens they felt the same, wanted to associate with the previous generation in the 60s, the music and culture.

Appreciate the love. Ā Be sure to love your generation too. Ā You donāt want to alienate yourself. Ā As you get older, you will find your footing. Ā One thing we did was enjoy our fun in the moment. Ā
I like your generation. Ā You might be a little lacking in humor, but overall, I think yāall are alright. Donāt be too hard on yourselves and develop a āwhateverā attitude.Ā

Mix in some variations like "Holmes" or "Homeskillet", get some acid washed jeans and a cheap Winger T-Shirt purchased from a local carnival, a Swatch secured to your wrist, and a true Gen Xer shall you be!! Thanks for the kind words. Trust me, we were kind of idiots back when we were young, too. We were just lucky not to have a giant worldwide open forum to cry our eyes out on.
And this sub is incredibly welcoming and fun, and the more the merrier! Later, dude!

Honestly, a lot of the stuff they say about Gen Z they also said about Gen X. I remember back in the late '80s/ early '90s the general view of the older generations was that Gen X was a bunch cynical, , apathetic, pessimistic, depressed teenagers who were very tiresome to be around.
There's a Simpsons episode from 1996 "Homerpalooza" that kind of shows what the perception of Gen X was - a bunch of sour-faced teens https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0701127/

I like Gen Z. To me, it seems Gen X and Gen Z share an innate dislike of the establishment. Boomers and Millennials are more apt to buy into the establishment narrative, imo. Gen X and Gen Z grew up fast. Boomers and Millennials are forever children.
merianya@reddit
I think Gen Z has had something similar to Gen Xās childhood experience in that they have grown up online with not a lot of supervision, and have had to figure things out for themselves in much the same way we did. Just as we were given free rein to go explore outside or watch whatever we wanted on TV, exposing us to situations or content that were not really kid-appropriate, Gen Z has basically had the same thing with the Wild West of the internet. From this perspective, handing your kid a tablet and telling them to entertain themselves is not all that different from being told to go outside and play.
Because letās be honest, most adults still have little to no actual, applicable knowledge when it comes to internet security or protecting oneās identity. So Gen Z hasnāt had much in the way of adult guidance on the internet yet still given access to it from an extremely young age. They are the ones confronting new problems, too, like the mental health issues that can arise from social media use during crucial years when personal identity is being developed, that earlier generations didnāt have to deal with. They are having to grow up fast like we did, just in a different medium.

The things we did at 19 make me very happy 30 years later that cameras and social media weren't yet a thing. There were BBSes, Usenet and Fidonet, but the masses didn't even know what those were.
If I did a tenth now of what we got away with then, I'd be in jail for a very long time... or dead.
hauntile@reddit
Tbh a lot of the sensitivity around humour is more rooted in millennials. Gen z humour is kinda unhinged and confusing from an outside perspective, but it isn't lacking.
ProfessorCH@reddit
My teen son (Gen Z) and I (Gen X) talk about this a lot. He feels like OP, he often wishes he were raised in my era. I think a lot of Gen Z have Gen X parents. Gen Z humor is darker than I expected. Some of it is truly off the rails. My son is downright hilarious but sometimes pushes the envelope to the point I am secretly thinking heāll land in HR (due to Millennial bosses) on the daily. Heāll need to work for GenXers and with our generation or his generation to not be fired. Heās learning the appropriate times and whatnot but sometimes he throws a witty, sarcastic zinger out there that would make GenX proud and everyone else stare in disbelief that it came out of teen mouth. Wise beyond his years, still working in reading the room though.
hauntile@reddit
Ye I'm gen Z (18M) and its a pretty big misconception that gen z humour would be woke, esp younger gen z. There's a general trend that teens and young adults are becoming less woke and (for men) more right winged compared to the previous generation. I generally relate more to gen x than millennials in beliefs due to this factor. I also think I might land in HR one day š
Stigger32@reddit
Yeh donāt get down on young people. Weāre older and can laugh at ourselves now. But back when we were your age. We had our share of doom and gloom. - Berlin wall came down. No one knew how the USSR would react. - Challenger shuttle blowing up was epically shit. - We had mass famine in Africa. - China reared it head with Tiananmen Square massacre
The list goes on.
All I can say now at 50 is just live your best life. Be nice to people when possible. And donāt sweat the small stuff.
And stay off toxic social media!!!š¤
akillerofjoy@reddit
Oh man. Is anyone gonna tell him? No? I guess itās me thenā¦
Look, OP, the reason you arenāt seeing any of that doom and gloom around here is because we are too old, tired and lazy to keep that up. You, my friend, are complimenting a generation who literally dragged the permanent state of ennui around, anywhere we went. Itās our goddamn business card. It permeated everything we grew up with, from the Cure to Nirvana, from Bukowski to Vonnegut, from Greenaway to Boyle. We used to eat, breathe and sleep that shit.
Generations before ours, you know what they were called? The Great Generation. The Silent Generation. Those MFs kept their heads down and worked their asses off to build this country and provide for their families. They fought wars. Then the boomers showed up. Clueless as hell, unable to adapt to the massive changes that the 1980s brought. But they made us. The shapeshifters. Half analogue, half digital. So much potentialā¦ what did we do with it? Goth stuff.
So donāt be so hard on your gen. Itās called coming of age for a reason.
MonkeyKingCoffee@reddit
Adding to the above. GenX at your age:
I quite like both the Millennials and GenZ. They're much further along than we were at the same age. So I keep rooting for them. GenX isn't going to "take over." It's going straight from Boomers to Millennials. And that's fine. It's basically what we wanted.
akillerofjoy@reddit
I donāt interact much with gen Z, but I agree 100% on the millennials. Thereās that familiar lost vibe about them. Whereas we were ignored, and had to figure out literally everything, when we grew up and made our own babies, weāve overcompensated and helicoptered the shit out of them. As a result, they were just as woefully unprepared for the real world, now stumbling their way into their 30s. Come to think of it, most of my friends are probably millennials. And when I say āmostā, I mean, both. And when I say āfriendsā I mean colleagues. Because no one makes friends at my tender age ofā¦ pushing 50. Eh, they gave me my nickname for a reason
NackieNack@reddit
Dude, they're not stumbling into their 30s, the oldest Gen Z may be, but the oldest millennials are already hitting their mid-40s. They've started to hit middle age, only the youngest are 30 now. Heck, our cohort is starting to turn 60 already...

From my interactions with Z, they're the anti-Boomers when it comes to emotional maturity. Boomers don't have a thimbleful of empathy and don't give a shit. Zoomers have buckets full of empathy and have anxiety because they care about things so much.

I canāt take credit for this one. Thereās a dude on TikTok, I think, goes by DadBod Veteran. He had this whole thing about our generation being the only one able to move between the analogue and digital worlds, like shapeshifters.
philovax@reddit
I would like to make an argument for the children of the Industrial Revolution.
Ever notice that we started this whole generation nonsense around the time we started marketing firms? What is the generation of those raised in 1750 called? Gen Regicide?
im_dead_sirius@reddit
The locus is the Baby Boomers (and they'd like hearing that).
As you step back in generations, or forward, as we are doing, the generations start falling out of phase with neat time slices, partly because they are tied to noteworthy events and decades, and not something approximating generations.
But even the first named generations aren't very neat and tidy. For instance, actual Baby Booms started when individual nations left WWII, and that varied. For instance, The US after Sept 2, 1945, while Canada was pretty much out after V-E day in Europe, which was earlier in 1945. And of course, Europe itself didn't really have a baby boom because so much was destroyed, including economies.
They had a baby bust starting in about 1939, right up until the 1960s. Euro "Gen-X" might even be a bigger generation than their parents.
For the US, the baby boom ended with US entry into Vietnam. Canada never officially joined that conflict (though I know of people who signed up for the US military), so the Canadian Baby Boom started sooner and lasted longer. Other nations like Australia did take part in 'Nam.
For that reason, Gen-X has variable start times, and perhaps slightly varying social concepts, and Gen-X wasn't all born to the same generation of parents. For instance, my eldest aunt is a war baby, not a baby boomer, and her kids, Gen-X like me, are actually younger than I am, though she's older than my dad. Socially, of course, my aunt is a baby boomer, but not strictly speaking. And my youngest aunt is Gen-X, born in 1966. Born to parents born around 1920.
The millennials were born from either Baby Boomers or Gen-X. Gen-Z is split somewhat between Gen-X and Millennial parents. And yet, my Gen-X sister has a child who is Gen Alpha.
As time goes by, that will get messier, and that concept of social generations may become irrelevant.
akillerofjoy@reddit
Indeed, come to think of it, I donāt know of any generations prior to the Greatest. That might be the first one to be given a name

I'm cool with Gen Z. Gen X just wants to be left alone, pretty much how we spent our childhoods doing crazy unsupervised things for hours and hours. Survivors who figure shit out because we had to. No coddling. Shit, some of us never ever got hugged by our parents and no verbal I love yous. Crazy isn't it. Gen Z through the power of the internet just discovered how fucking rigged everything is including jobs, pay, insurance and pretty much everything else on this shit show of a planet. The Boomers or silent generation just told us to work hard and then work even fucking harder. Gen Z just asked the question WHY more as they see the shit show underneath. Many of us Gen X you better the fuck have around when the zombie uprising start. We will be the hardcore survivors working behind the scenes 16 hours a day to kill them so all you other fucking generations can argue amongst yourselves. Gen X here holding down 3 jobs at 60 to 80 hours work weeks. We get shit done and take risks because that was our childhoods.

Nah, don't hate your generation. GenZ has some pretty great things going on about them. GenX now is a bit different than when we were your age-- we've done a lot of growing up in that interim. We weren't nearly as accepting of gay teens when we were adolescents as GenZ is now, for example. Bullying was a bigger problem back then too.
StormFinch@reddit
Depended on location I guess. I was born and raised in Arkansas, the town at the time had less than 75,000 souls. Although they would have never said anything about it for obvious reasons, it was common knowledge amongst my peers and I that one of our male teachers in middle school was gay and would sometimes perform in cross-dressing events on the weekends. He was also one of the most well-loved teachers, and there was no way in hell any of us would breathe a word about knowing to any adult. Later in high school, everyone knew who was gay and who was straight, we just really didn't care. On a related note, the school district was almost exclusively white, though there was one poc enrolled. Everyone would say hi to them and they were extremely popular. Again, it just wasn't a thing as far as we were concerned.
Kodiak01@reddit
Went to high school and worked in Northampton, MA in the early-mid 90s. Being intolerant to gays wasn't even a thought back then as long as their side respected the boundaries of straight people as well.
Hell, the things I saw working the weekend graveyard shift at the parking garage back around 93-94...

LadyChatterteeth@reddit
Yes, this was my experience too in the 1990s. I came of age in Southern California. My two best friends were gay and were extremely well-liked and popular. I also knew a handful of bi people who didnāt have any problems fitting in. It would never have occurred to me not to accept someone because of their sexual orientation.
I also knew gay people who died of AIDS, and they were widely mourned. To this day, theyāre not forgotten. š My gay besties are still my most favorite people of my entire life. š
Worst-Panda@reddit
Yeah, like anyone, I'm just drawing on my own experiences. When I was a kid, we moved from CA to CO and I spent my teen years in a small town north of Denver (also at the time pop. was about 70 K) and bullying was definitely a problem. I had a friend who was gay, but didn't come out of the closet until after HS. It didn't seem to matter though because, despite being very much in the closet, he still got mercilessly bullied every day for being gay by our student body. My other friends and I stuck up for him, but that just meant we were gay too and thus also targets for bullying.
But I think you're right-- location makes a difference. After HS I moved back to CA and noticed the difference in attitudes amongst our generation. I also noticed attitudes shifting further as we all got older and more mature.
My GenZ kids both are way more tolerant than my peers where when we were their age. My daughter was an active member of the Gay-Straight Alliance club in her middle school. I'm sure kids in CO (which has since become a liberal bastion) are more tolerant now. I'm proud of them and their peers for not being the douchebags some of us were back then.
I know OP feels disaffected and detached from his generation, but they're a generation with a better outlook on the world than I think we had. It's kind of a shame that we haven't been able to fix the problems we inherited and now have to pass those problems down to them. I have faith in them, though. I think we all should.
ChillaRoo@reddit
Yeah, huuuuge difference in Denver from the 90s to now. Itās never been the same since Boulder won the Great Range War of 2013.
StormFinch@reddit
Sorry about what your friend, and you by association, had to go through.
I think part of the problem Op is running into can be at least partially attributed to the vocal minority. There are certain portions of Reddit that you just really don't want to wander into, and I've seen it happen with things like fandoms groups as well. Groups where the ones yelling are all negative, but there's a lot more under the surface that you never even hear from.
farmerben02@reddit
This was my experience too, the bullying was of nerds like me, and once I started lifting weights and throwing hands, and stuck up for my friends, they left us alone. Fight every three months and it was fine. No one bullied the lbgtq or poc's. We had different words then but no one really cared.
My junior and senior year in highschool everyone got along and it was pretty great. I didn't have to hit anyone and I had a great time. Shared some drink with people who hit me before and it was all good. I don't have any bullies I want to get back at, I did that when I was young.
OrbAndSceptre@reddit
GenX has definitely grown up. Every second word in the locker room or corridor was fag this and fag that. If there were iPhones back in the day weād be all cancelled.
Now, all of my friends and I believe equality is equality and weāve left that stage of our lives far behind.
GenZ might be more intolerant of differing thoughts but at least they grew up in an environment thatās much more supportive of everyone.
peptide2@reddit
Yes the one thing I like about Gen X is they we always had the ability to grow as an individual with open minds, it helped me raise the coolest 26 year old daughter. She is in Total control her life lives far from me and when I visit we have a blast . Her and her peers give me hope for the future of this planet and you guys will have the opportunity to do it as well. Not bashing anyone but we found all the doors locked for us upon graduation and most still managed to open them for themselves, a fuck it attitude helps as well. Many of us graduated into a recession a gulf war and high interest rates . For 250,000 you could have a house on the water in the Golden Horseshoe of Ontario but for me my first mortgage was for 96,000 and I was just getting by so itās all relevant. We have to do something about home ownership for you guys . Please donāt correct me on the pronoun thing. Guys to us means everyone. LIKE āAWW YOU GUYS!!!!
Tommythegunn23@reddit
Those type of words were always weird for me. I used words like that all the time when I was young, and still catch myself calling something gay that I think is weird. Here's the thing though...I've never had a problem with gay people my entire life, even have some I consider friends now. I think even as a kid using those words, I never thought anything of it.

My kids are 22 and 24 (genZ) with college degrees (real ones) now and they are completely normal. I personally think GenZ is better then the millinials since genX raised them and boomers raised many of the millinials. Sure their are bad ones and like society now, they are still a very small and very LOUD percent of the population, mostly those who get indocrinated in college while taking gender studies class's.
I always felt the millinials just live in a fantisy world mix of Harry Potter and all these damned cartoon movies with animals talking that they seem to like so much.

As an Xer, lemme tell ya, I like you genZ kids so much more than the junior boomers that are millenials.
Y'all seem much more genuinely willing to care for each others mental health. Much more present emotionally than we are, and more willing to speak up when people treat others poorly.
My only real complaint is, 'why so many edgelord nazi guys?' but the answer to that has a lot more to do with shitty parenting and billionaire sociopath's algorithms than anything else.

That, and a lot of people never grew out their 4chan middleschool edgelord days and still think that saying racist shit is funny for some reason.

Ya know, I would disagree. I actually think that X and Z could be world changing. Many X had been quietly doing various low and high key activism on and off for most of our lives, and Z grew up with the innate ability to garner attention.
I think if everyone just tosses the generational competition nonsense aside, we could really focus the message and change stuff. There's a reason we've been pitted against each other.
I admire how Z is like, nope, not taking that corporate crap. Yes, we should be an inclusive society. Hmmm, maybe I should be self-aware and consume my media consciously.

Well, being around people older than you, you can pick up some nuggets of wisdom that are more enduring than fleeting social approval that is the be all, end all when weāre young.
Everyone is different in some way including GenX-ers. Weāre just more closeted! lol. Well, me for example, it took me until I was 54 to really accept I am bisexual and I still havenāt had the courage to chat up a woman.
You my friend, accepting yourself at a young age when society is giving you B.S. about it- you are so far ahead of the game. Keep that in mind. I say hang around people you feel comfortable and supported by.

While I love my generation, there are things I appreciate about Gen Z more than Gen X. Example: you guys are actually willing to stand up for yourselves and not silently eat the shit shoveled to you, particularly in work situations. That kind of IDGAF attitude is healthier than Gen Xās apathy and cynicism.
Sorry about the state of the world previous generations (including my own) have left for you. Good luck out there.
godleymama@reddit
I love my GenX brethren, but i love GenZ as well! I have 2 sons, 25 and 20. I'm assuming they are GenZ. My younger one is more 'doom and gloom' and it makes me sad. I would give my life for those GenZers!

Mean_Fae@reddit
I gotta tell you...Gen X loves the hell outta Gen Z. Here's why: 1. You have excellent taste in music, and know as much about our own shit as we do. We are happy to share. 2. Is it possible that you are more savage than we are. Not in the drinking from the garden hose kinda way, but I have hung out in your sub a bit and you all give zero fucks. I like that. 3. You're skeptical. I told my Z niece some shit about the World Economic Forum and she was just like...you got a source? 4. You don't tolerate bullying. 5. You're our kids, and we're proud of you. Don't say you're the worst when the Millennial sub is whinier and far less entertaining than y'alls sub. I can't even open that thing.
One last thing, I saw a TikTok where some Z's were talking about going to war with Gen X (like boomers vs Millennials?) And I was like...we just want to hug you like our parents never hugged us.
Or whatever.
MeNotYouDammit@reddit
The concept of going to war with Gen X on social media is laughable. One of two things would happen
1) We ignore them , mostly, and don't even fight because you can't hurt Gen X with words and we couldn't care enough to get offended.
2)We fight. Now this scenario is dangerous because again you can not offend us but the shit grenades we can hurl at you is devastating to anyone who can be offended. Once we commit to a fight we would be relentless and no mercy would be shown.
I really hope no one tries to pick a fight with Gen X.

r33c3d@reddit
Honestly, I find the Gen Z interactions Iāve had to be similar to when I was a young Gen Xer. However, I do think Gen Z ā despite being more empathetic ā is much quicker to anger, negativity and hella anxiety than we were. Iām assuming itās because they were never left by themselves to just āfigure it outā and thus theyāre prone to extreme frustration and helplessness. Iām a little concerned about it, ācause they seem to be missing the humor and resilience side we added to our apathy and anger.
I also think theyāre very pissed about shitty work culture ā just like we were ā but way more aggressive, defiant and utterly humorless about it. And thatās probably my biggest warning I give to Gen Zers: Donāt shoot yourself in the foot about work. I know you donāt want to take any bullshit and be vocal about. But thereās also something to be said about just rolling your eyes, not taking it personally, laughing it off, and keeping your head down. A little Zen-like acceptance that life just sucks, suffering canāt be avoided, and capitalism is a steamroller that canāt be stopped might give you some opportunity to focus on other things in life ā like socializing, developing niche personal interests, and enjoying some self-affirming hobbies.
Donāt sweat it so much; life will get better as you gain more experience and perspective. Donāt give up. Choose life when surrounded by evil, not despair.

There's obviously a lot of generalization here, but I'm damn proud of how your generation stands up for yourselves and your peers. It's an ethos I like to think we instilled in our kids.

WishieWashie12@reddit
Gen Z gives me hope for our future. There are always a few examples on the extreme, but the vast majority of Z i have interacted with are more socially conscience and willing to stand up for themselves and the rights of others. From school shootings to lgbt rights to the environment. I saw Maxwell Frost's DNC speech and hope for the day more Zs push the boomers out of political offices. Your generation has the numbers to make real changes if they remain politically active, vote, and run for more offices.
The public education you were provided may be shit, but those who want to learn have online resources I could have only dreamed of as a kid. The amount of creativity I see coming out amazes me. Indi music and games, art, and other forms of expression are not limited by corporate studio overlords. Platforms to self-publish and share your creativity with the world are easily accessable.
I jokingly tell my kid that gen Z is the Minecraft generation. Cooperation and working together to build something beautiful.

Specific_Ad_97@reddit
You'll be fine. You guys have a ton of advantages that we could only dream about. We didn't have access to instant information. If we wanted to learn something, how to make something, or how to do something.
We had to find someone who knew the answer, good luck with that. Or, we had to read about it. One thing I can tell you about Gen X is that a majority of us read a lot of Books. It was the only real way to escape, explore, engage, & expand our consciousness without using drugs or alcohol.
Trust me, we had more than our fair share. All we did was Party.
The early 90s was like the late 60s turned upside. Non-conformity was a big part of our nature. Selling out was for losers. No one wanted to become famous or have their picture in magazines. We made Art for Us.
We lived in the moment & we loved it. We didn't take selfies or feel the need to photograph our food or clothes. We remembered everything, & we still do.
Our experiences were unique because we cherished all the good times with our family & friends. We dealt with the bad times through inner strength & resilience.
If we made mistakes, we owned them. We learned from our mistakes & made sure everyone else did too. We held people accountable for doing something wrong, we looked out for others, & we stood up for ourselves. We still do.
We just don't like to talk about it, because we've got better things to do.
You said you were Queer. I'm not, but I'm proud of the fact that you OP are Gen Z & you can say that out loud without being afraid. I had plenty of Gay friends over the years who really struggled with their identity growing up in the 80s & 90s.
Being openly Gay 35 years ago wasn't easy. Aids was a real epidemic & homophobia was rampant throughout society. My mom was a nurse at one of the 1st Aids Hospice & Healthcare Centers in Chicago.
All of her patients knew there wasn't a cure & nobody was going to come & save them. The entire Aids crisis was a real lesson of unconditional Love.
Being able to accept another human being for who they were without judgment or fear was so hard for so many people to do back then because there were so many opposing forces that fought against them. "It was all types of fucked up."
Also, Crime was a thousand times worse, & people were much more prone to Violence. We can save those horror stories for a later date.
My advice is. Fuck everybody else. Go out & live your life the way you want to! Walk Tall with dignity & grace. Look out for the down trodden, & look out for your friends, make sure they're looking out for you as well. Read more! Talk more! Learn more!

Donāt hate your generation. You guys are cool. The things that piss you off are important, and I respect that. Our parents generation gets all upset about bad words and wrong words like happy holidays or no problem instead of merry Christmas or youāre welcome. I just can't stand stand the self absorbed, self agrandizing generation. Bad parenting did that. GenX grew up with far less advanced tech, Walkman, Atari and a phone that had a cord, dial up modems so I think our experiences were more about being present in that moment. Whatever it was. Millennials and Gen Z have grown up with iPhones and social media, a capture and share experience culture rather than just experiencing them. There was no fear of missing out. We raised ourselves. For most of us we were latchkey kids where both parents worked. Self reliant and resilient may have contributed to our unbothered attitude. Iām starting to see my nephew and nieces not care so much about being on their tech and see them rarely take out for the occasional picture. So thereās that. Anyway, just a thought.

I thought the same about millennials for a while until I realized they're responsible for opening our minds and being more compassionate and accepting. Gen x was well on our way and likely taught it to our children.
The menendez murder case is one example. The older Gen then was like yeah I got beat too but I didn't murder my parents. Gen x was believing them until the media changed our minds. We still didn't feel good about it. But millennials changed everyone's perspective and the brothers get a chance at freedom.

This is how it's SUPPOSED to be. All this doomerism and rage bating is NEW and didn't used to be mainstream.
Part of it is just a product of the times. Y started this shit where they've greatly expanded judgemental ism to the point where nobody is safe anymore.
It doesn't have to be like this, and it's eventually going to end. It just a matter of when. The boomers started the whole work-a-holic thing, and X was the one to put an end to that shit. Z can be the generation that puts an end to the Y's doom and judge pattern.

You are aware that technology is both beneficial and detrimental for yourselves and for society. You don't sacrifice life for careers and you don't put up with bad jobs. Gen Z wants purpose in life. But you're also figuring out life, and life right now is weird.
Gen Z gives me hope for the future. And having hope for the future is a new feeling for me.
PuzzleheadedWeird402@reddit
Have faith! As a parent of two awesome Gen Zers there are some great people out there in your generation. There are also some that just need some growing up to do. Once more and more of you get out on your own and start families perspectives begin to change because now you have to be the grown up in the room. š

Gen X here. We like you too, youāre like us with motivation.
Big-On-Mars@reddit
And see, I like GenZ more than I like current GenX. Your music is vaguely reminiscent of the 80s/90s with a fresh twist. You have an energy that you use to change the world for the better. You treat each other with respect. Our generation is old and turning into boomers. Most of us weren't cool. Just watch any 80s movie and you'll see that the preppies and jocks ruled, and the weirdos had to make their own space.
Sorry to say, but you would have had a horrible time growing up GenX. Maybe the people you're around now are shits, but if you grew up queer in our generation, you would have lived in fear anyone would find out. You would have been bullied and tortured if it was even suspected you were LGBTQ+. You would have to keep your mouth shut as people made AIDS jokes and said blatantly racist shit. And adults would look on and say oh that's just how kids are. I suggest you seek out the misfits in your generation. We had to.

Donāt despair, let us do that for you. Like many have said here, Gen Z gives us Gen Xers much hope. Many of us donāt believe millennials can be saved (from their own self-entitlement and over-sheltering). See their mistakes on social media and donāt follow them. Put away your phones and computers and live your life - by all means see what Gen x did for hobbies and such.
I can tell you surely that millennials conflate boomers (whom we also detest) with Gen X and thus refuse to take our well-meaning advice. Increasingly, I for one have stopped giving millennials advice, but I frequently find Gen Zs wiling to hear us out. Maybe weāre biased because you are our children, but if that means we want to save this world for you, thatās the best motivation. Come to us anytime you need.
waaaghboyz@reddit
Well luckily, everything Gen X is readily available for you to discover and enjoy. You donāt have to watch skibidi toilet or tiktok stunts, you can watch Pee-weeās Playhouse for extremely stupid nonsense thatās actually funny.
LocalInactivist@reddit
I think the core differences between Boomers and GenX are that we havenāt forgotten what itās like to be young and we really hate it when old people ignore or denigrate our stuff just because they donāt like it. I donāt get a lot of your music but why should I? Itās not made for people in their 50s. If you enjoy it, great! I donāt see any reason to try to co-opt your stuff by claiming we paved the way. It was galling when the Boomers tried to pander to us by comparing Lollapalooza to Woodstock.
If you like our old bands and our cynical style, awesome! Let it inform what you do. Just try to learn from our mistakes. Looking at you, acid-washed jeans.
Oh, but check out Iggy Pop and Neil Young while you still have a chance to see them live. They were already old when we were kids and they wonāt keep touring forever. Well, maybe Iggy. Heās 77 and he could probably take Gojira.
emmsmum@reddit
A lot of Gen Zāers I know, including my kids, really like Gen X and I think itās because we are young at heart still. To us it seems like yesterday that we were young so we can still see the points young people make.
OverGas3958@reddit
You just need to find your people. I was able to work with some Gen z kids and found them to be quite charming, hilarious, and hard working. Half of us canāt stand our own generation because they act like boomers. We all go through it. Just find your people. Theyāre out there but some of us take longer to find who weāre meant to spend our time with.

My two gen Z kids amaze me every day. Empathetic and aware of the world, able to see things from other perspectives in a way I never could when I was a teenager. They also live under a type of social pressure that I never experienced until I was old enough to realize that stuff is all bullshit. I have an enormous amount of respect and hope for Gen z. It also doesnāt hurt that my oldest is obsessed with Elliot smith, nirvana and the cure so not only do I love her but I like her
catrules618@reddit
I dont imagine reddit is a good way to evaluate any gen. Also, it's just a means of classification. You can do, and like, and be anyone you want.
In my opinion, it's apples and oranges. Y'all have never known a world without social media, smart phones and TV programs with no commercials. Most of you endured covid shutdowns in the time of your life when socializing is a huge need. That complicates a lot for you guys. I dont know that having constant screen access is good for anyone.
Y'all have so much more knowledge and access to people unlike you that is super cool. But you do need to come together at some point, and sort yourselves out. Because you are facing challenges that are nothing like we ran up against.
The doomerism makes a bit of sense I think. I like that term by the way. Maybe we should call you doomers rather than zoomers. š
Hang in there. But I dont think that meeting and interacting with other gens is a bad idea. Older, and in a few years, those younger than you.
You've got this. How about injecting some joy or silliness into your sub? I'm no toxic positivity gal, but its never good for anyone to take themselves too seriously.

Yep, the gay kid always got picked on. So did the girls, the fat kid, the weird kid, the tall kid, the short kid, ... And me, the redheaded kid. Well, they tried anyway š« definitely helped make us tougher but many ran home crying. Like my oldest brother... redheaded, freckle faced(I didn't get this as bad) bucktoothed, and coke bottle glasses. He was born in '62('77 for me) and got shit on by other kids way worse.
lazygerm@reddit
I always got picked on for thick glasses and for being the weird and gay kid.
JakkSplatt@reddit
My brother's friends confessed later that they always thought I was going to be gay when I grew up. Little did they know I'd end up marrying a woman in their own age group š¤£ my closest brother in age was born in '68. My wife in '69.
lazygerm@reddit
I wish I knew at that time!

I worked with a group of teens about 8 yrs ago (I volunteered at a camp for a week) -- now they are all in their early-mid 20's and despite me being about 30 yrs older they had lots in common with Gen X. They knew most of the 80s songs that I grew up with and at the same time we still had the "what was life like when you were 16" conversations
Mean_Fae@reddit
Theyre also hilarious.
FoxIndependent5789@reddit
As a genxāer, i appreciate the love but know that our formative decade, the 1980s, wasnāt all happy memories for a lot of people (including queer people). It could really suck. What you describe as the shittiness of Gen Z, I kinda think this is a result of you being the first social media generation. And honestly I think social media will fuck up every generation if/until we as a society decide how to manage it.
LVMom@reddit
My kids are zoomers and they are pretty cool. People may say they have no work ethic but the truth is they have a more balanced work home life than we ever had. My daughterās a bartender and works all the hours she needs to have the things she wants and then she goes home. She takes sick leave when she needs it - unlike me who was taught to never miss a day at work.
Mean_Fae@reddit
They learned it by watching us.

LVMom@reddit
It took me waaay too long to realize āthe manā doesnāt care about me or my well-being. It sounds gross now, but I was taught to go to work and being in the hospital was no excuse - āthey have an internet connection, donāt they?ā The only excuse to miss work was to attend my own funeral. Gen Z donāt give a fuck in the best possible way
ItsPumpkinSpiceTime@reddit
We had a lot of growing up to do. You know where I lived if you announced to even your best friend that you were queer back in our "good ol' days" you could be run out of town. We had a girl expelled from the entire district for writing a love note to another girl in high school. Queer folk had to walk through the fire! We had a lot of doom and gloom too with the constant threats of nuclear war. Living in TN we had to do regular drills for nuclear attacks like it would have made a difference to hide under a desk. And there was so much open racism back then. People where i lived were soooo scared of "race mixing".
It blows my mind to think how different it is now, but we are all stills subject to that same doom and gloom and bigotry.
You probably like it here because we might be dorky as heck but we're still more mature in our world views.
Well... some of us!

jRok57@reddit
I appreciate your words, and I do think that we had it pretty good. But Gen Z has got it going on too.
One of the things that I think our generation did right was going outside with other people. Find a mall, if you can, and take a few friends and walk around the mall for a day. Go to a party, and have everyone leave their phones at the door.
My nieces and nephews are gen Z, and I think they're pretty awesome. I'm sure you are too.
JT-Shelter@reddit
Interesting that you say this. I met a few Gen Zerās recently, and I was impressed at how nice they were. Just very nice people.
Vegetable_Storm_6045@reddit
Thereās a lot good about you Gen Z (Iām Gen X). You all have gone through a lot because of Covid shut downs etc. it really affected the growth and maturity of your group. We have a lot in common with Gen Z because us too have gone through a lot being that most were latch key kids etc. We also get ignored alot thus feel like you do in a way! Gen Z will change and grow as they mature.
NVJAC@reddit
To be faiiiiiiir, I don't envy Gen Z. You kids have grown up with social media making you feel like you're in a fishbowl 24/7, and the algorithms pushing doomerism and ragebait on you because it gets more "engagement" than "Hey, look at this cool shirt I got at a thrift shop."
Yeah, sometimes you're a bit too "I already know everything, grandpa", but that's common to every generation. We were the same way with our Boomer parents. Your kids will be the same way with you.
The more Gen Z (and tbh, every other generation as well) is able to disconnect from social media, the better off we'll all be. (Reddit has its problems too, but it's more like an old-school bulletin board from the early days of the Internet).
As far as the music and culture ... well, I don't see much improvement coming as AI is used more to make movies and music.
1000thusername@reddit

Thereās just a good cross-section on Reddit that were mostly outcasts and weirdos in their youth (if I had to guess), and theyāre curious and social. Those people exist in your generation, thereās just a larger overall percentage of them online, so youāre getting more wankers too.
