Which old car would be the most spectacular if it got a proper modern day reboot?
Posted by Crocodile_Banger@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 579 comments
So the idea would be to make a modern version of an old car but built with the same intentions as back then. For example I would love to see a modern version of the Mercedes 600. Back then this car was so much ahead of any competitor. The specs, the features, the luxury…..there hasn’t been any car since then that came close to what it was when it hit the market. I think the closest we got to this was the Maybach 62 and even this one wasn’t a proper equivalent car.
What other cars would make a serious impact nowadays for being just on a whole other level?

Maybe this’ll age like milk but I actually believe Mazda won’t name a car RX anything if it doesn’t carry a rotary. I’d believe they made the RX-9 and it’s a rotary powered crossover before they just slapped RX on a standard piston car

Emphasis on lightness, 50/50 cg and smooth power.
It's the little things the RX-7 did imo. Like having the front calipers rearward of the axle and the rear calipers forward of the rear axle to help keep the cg 50/50.
Think of an RX-7 like a Miata's bigger brother. There's an argument it could be 2+2 like in the FC generation. But I generally see it as a 2 seater with a proper hatchback.
So imagine a Miata with more power. Slightly bigger/heavier. Emphasis on slightly. No convertible but having some sort of hatchback that greatly increases storage and practicality.
Like if Mazda made a Mustang.
cilantno@reddit
So you ideally just want the FD?
AznTri4d@reddit
I mean yes. But updated.
But a more realistic or I guess tangible way of looking at it is a Miata designed with no convertible option in mind, slightly bigger and more powerful.
Think of how the NC and RX-8 shared platforms. A stretched ND essentially with the 3.3 inline 6. Keep it under or around 3k, ideally 2800-2900 range and I'm sold.
A 3k or ideally sub3k weight car with 340hp for ~48-55k is kind of what I want tbh.
I don't want 3500-3600lb 400hp cars like the Supra or Z. Less power is fine with less weight. I want a big miata.

Well as a FD owner? Pride, sadness, money.
SheepherderDue1342@reddit
You didn't ask me, but in the recent past Mazda worked with Fiat/Alfa Romeo, and I had dreams that in return for the Fiat spider under pinnings, Mazda would get the Alfa 4c CF tub to drop a rotary into.
cilantno@reddit
A rear engine Mazda product would be bonkers
SheepherderDue1342@reddit
I thought so, and gives it a little more special appeal beyond the rotary. I imagine a bit of a nightmare to manage temps in that packaging, but you wouldn't need crazy power in that chassis. I think the actual 4c only has like 240 or so and it's quick.
dL_EVO@reddit
Isn’t that a RX8?
Ru4pigsizedelephants@reddit
No, that wasn't an evolution of the FD, it was a completely different approach to a sports car, and it sucked.
dL_EVO@reddit
I could argue that it's a very similar approach.
50/50 weight distribution
High revving rotary engine
Great inputs and dynamics
I feel the only thing that was really different is that the RX8 is naturally aspirated vs. the RX7 turbo variants. Both cars weren't exactly reliable.
shadysnorlax@reddit
Rx7 is a 2 seat couple and the rx8 had 4 seats and suicide doors.
Ru4pigsizedelephants@reddit
Haha, no I wouldn't call either reliable. I'll never understand why they didn't turbocharge the RX8. I just don't think they were quite sure what they wanted it to be.
RiftHunter4@reddit
I think they made exactly what they wanted, but didn't get the response they hoped for. The RX8 was a rotary for the masses. In todays money, it would be a $38k car, which is pretty reasonable.
The reason the car kinda flopped was because regular people don't understand how to care for a rotary, even if you tell them. From what I've heard, the Renesis engine was easy to maintain if you cared for it, but if you tuned it or didn't know what you were doing, it was easy to pop. And it's hard to sell that during a time when every Japanese sports coupe is getting tuned into a fire-breathing track beast.
Top_Repair6670@reddit
The Renesis will go at some point no matter how well you properly take care of it. Considering maybe 5% of owners knew how to care for it anyway, seems like onus falls on Mazda to better communicate how to own a rotary if they couldn’t make it reliable.
StraY_WolF@reddit
It was rotary for the masses with a high revving engine that you CAN'T baby it and eat fuel (and oil) for breakfast.
As far as car for the masses go, it's pretty bad.
Wiggles69@reddit
Emissions, and Ford fucking around with the design.
https://www.reddit.com/r/RX8/comments/12g3x6m/why_did_mazda_keep_the_rx8_na_what_was_the_reason/jfiwrjn/
dL_EVO@reddit
Yeah, I agree there. I don't understand their approach to not turbocharge the RX8 when all the Japanese sports cars of that era were going to turbocharging (EVO, WRX, STI, Mazdaspeed Protege, Mazdaspeed3, etc etc).
It wasn't exactly a radical idea, so yeah they were nuts to not do it.
Zappiticas@reddit
Because rotaries already suffer from reliability issues and adding a turbocharger makes it even worse. RX7’s, especially FD’s were far from reliable vehicles even when meticulously maintained
ExplosiveMachine@reddit
I know I'm biased, but seriously, go drive one. I didn't think much of it until I drove one, and then I bought one myself. Not because it's some halo car, but because you can get it for ridiculously cheap and it blows any over-hyped RWD japanese car like the S13/14 out of the water, and is a much better value than a GT86 or any supra or anything like that.
It handles amazingly well. The rotary in it is the most reliable one yet (still not particularly long lasting, but the FD engines rarely managed 60k miles), it has excellent road handling, excellent ergonomics inside (the FD has about as much interior room as a Miata), is actually a usable 2+2 coupe with power seats and auto AC and all that, and a spectacular GT tourer if you leave it stock, or you can drop it a bit and put on great tires and that's about all it needs. The rest is already there, front mid engine, limited slip diff, double wishbones up front, multilink in the rear, short gears, big brakes, oil coolers, everything.
srsbsnssss@reddit
trust me if they sold it new, i'd get it
it's cheap for a reason, it requires very delicate ownership and there's no telling what the previous owner did
i also hate catless street cars, sure they sound good but my life is literally being reduced behind one
ExplosiveMachine@reddit
I totally get the catless hate, but it's not for the sound, i only run it catless so I can premix two stroke oil in the fuel without grenading the 2500€ catalyst, but it's also a weekend only car that I use to bomb around good B roads and such, it stinks to me too, I daily drive a quiet fuel efficient honda hatchback (with a cat).
ILikeLimericksALot@reddit
You can get proper premix oil for rotaries that doesn't kill the cat. Idemitsu Rotary Premix oil. Burns completely cleanly.
srsbsnssss@reddit
yeah i get it like i said ive looked in to rx8 so know about premix
goes back to why they're so cheap, they weren't designed well for the average user on the street
kokopelli73@reddit
Sadly, despite all the great things about this car, it's really hard to justify it due to the MPG.
ExplosiveMachine@reddit
It's reall bad, that's true. But it's a weekend car for me, so whatever
dL_EVO@reddit
Why did you choose a S1 over a S2?
I’ve driven S1’s and I agree with all your statements. I was thinking of getting one but wanted a S2 because of reliability. But, is it really that much more reliable than S1?
ExplosiveMachine@reddit
There's just no S2s for sale where I am. I've only ever seen 2004 and 2005 model years, actually, idk id they stopped selling them after that or what. S3 didn't make it to Europe at all.
When buying one make sure it was driven right (moderately hard and not city driven) and serviced right and it should be ok. Mine is currently at 70K miles and going just fine
thiskillstheredditor@reddit
This guy gets it. Damn I need to go buy another one.
ice445@reddit
I can understand saying the engine sucked but that chassis was good. It was later used for the NC miata
Ru4pigsizedelephants@reddit
That's really what I meant. I know they're nice handling cars, but the decision to not turbocharge it made it completely gutless. Street cars need torque because you can't just go around wringing them out everywhere.
Track_Rat_@reddit
“You can’t just go around wringing them out everywhere.”
Me once my 86 hits optional operation temperatures: “Challenge accepted.”
Zappiticas@reddit
Have you driven one? I wouldn’t say they were gutless. Sure they weren’t super powerful, but they were light and nimble and fun as hell to take to the limiter.
thiskillstheredditor@reddit
As someone who owned one, I fully disagree. The RX-8 was awesome. It was like a 4 seater Miata because it shared a lot of the same underpinnings with the MX-5, plus an NA rotary with a 9500 rpm redline. RWD, a super smooth manual, limited slip differential.
Honestly I get it’s not an RX-7 but you have to hate sports cars to think the RX-8 sucks. I own a Boxster GTS currently and it’s the only car I’ve had that I liked more than my RX-8.
srsbsnssss@reddit
it was just Ford-era Mazda and shaped kinda awkwardly, but otherwise it's cool that it's N/A
i hope the new rotary-powered hybrid is a 2+2, love that it looks like a stretched ND with FD rear window
zillapecker@reddit
I think the rx8 was an attempt to be the successor to the rx7 the problem wasn’t the idea or evolution but stricter regulations. The chassis had to be heavy to meet safety standards. And they had to make the engine meet emissions standards which in turn killed the engines performance and longevity bc wankels want to burn oil. I think the rx8 might be the best we could get given the circumstances and unfortunately we will probably never see a return or a Mazda rotary powered sports car.
ExplosiveMachine@reddit
I mean the RX8 is hardly new at 20 years old.
pablxo@reddit
The RX Vision Concept from Gran Turismo 7 is probably a glimpse into what that could potentially look like.
that thing is gorgeous and really makes me think if Mazda were to bring back the RX name, it would be for some sort of halo car.

Anything a person wants can be built with enough money. The real trick is to build something that people can afford. The Beetle, the 2CV, Fiat 500, Mini, etc. All these cars of yore that made a huge impact we haven't seen in some time. 90% of what makes that car special is the engine & short gearing, neither of which would be possible under current emissions regs
I’d love if honda could refurbish/restomod s2000s but I’d rather they leave it dead than revive it as a turbo-4 or automatic-only hybrid/ev
I don’t see how they could do better value than the nd3 miata, that is a spectacular car. k20c1 is a better engine, but the S2000 was expensive at release, can’t see myself paying a hypothetical 10-20k over a miata today.

X_wing195@reddit
It’s only a four cylinder compact sports car. I wouldn’t think that the emissions or gas mileage would be that bad to begin with.
Track_Rat_@reddit
It’s an absolutely strung out 4 cylinder pushing over 100hp per liter that’s notorious for burning oil. Don’t lie to yourself. My 86 is only a 4 cylinder and I get like 18MPG which is objectively pretty awful even considering I drive it like a sports car.
TrptJim@reddit
I didn't realize the MPG can get that bad for the 86, yikes. Makes me appreciate the 27mpg the ND Miata gets while driving it like it's stolen.
Track_Rat_@reddit
I drive either exclusively in traffic or backroads @ 5000+ RPM so it’s pretty atrocious 😭😂
bemenaker@reddit
It wouldn't. Statement was so incredibly wrong. Easy to remake that car, and be even more powerful with direct injection now.
TheLoveKraken@reddit
VED in the uk, which everybody refers to as road tax, is based on emissions, and I’ve just had a look at the s2000 and it’s in the second highest bracket possible. It’s actually worse on emissions than something of the time like a 3.2l busso v6 Alfa 147.
X_wing195@reddit
A modern one could be engineered better to meet emissions standards. Could add a long overdrive gear to help with highway fuel efficiency and design the engine to be more efficient.
WendysChiliAndPepsi@reddit
Exactly they just can't make those kinds of cars anymore. I wanted a modern S2000 so I tried an ND2 for a few years. Didn't really like it. Tried a bunch of other recent stuff sub 60K and it was so-so. Ended up buying an AP1 because nothing currently is as good. And probably never will be again.
FancyFerrari@reddit
Funny that you got downvoted but you’re so correct. Not much near that price point that gets you a similar driving experience.

ECAR2000@reddit
I reckon tight gearing for 6 gears would be great than a ridiculously long 7th. But unfortunately there's no working around the Engine requirements
joelk111@reddit
Honestly though, I've been wanting to see a hybrid with a manual transmission. In my head it'd have a flat foot shifting mode that drops the revs of the engine when you clutch in while keeping the hybrid power going, as well as a conventional manual mode. It sounds like a lot of fun to me.
soapboxhonda@reddit
I believe the Honda Cr-Z hybrid actually came with a manual transmission for some years. To my knowledge, it's the only hybrid car before or since with one.
Aaaaand after a quick google search, I was shown that im wrong. Both the Honda Insight and crz were both hybrids that offer manuals here in the U.S.
However, the rest of the world have more options for manual hybrids such as the ford puma, ford fiesta, fiat 500, fiat panda, etc.
Not a fan of hybrids myself, but there would be a higher chance of me owning one if it came with a 5 or 6 mt for sure
hi_im_bored13@reddit
The issue is most quicker/powerful hybrids are going to implement the electric motor as part of the transmission housing (replacing your torque converter & starter - e.g. the short lived ILX sport hybrid), or the e-motor is used at low/mid speeds and the manufacturer uses a planetary gear-set or direct drive system for the ICE to get rid of the transmission altogether (planetary in the toyota eCVT, and direct-drive in the new honda hybrids)
Honda made manual hybrids (CR-Z, Insight) for a short time on their IMA system, which was essentially a very powerful starter motor, and they were good fun and quite convenient (very hard to stall, very easy to start, low end torque & smooth start/stop when you put the trans into neutral)
However that system was less efficient and refined than toyota eCVT automatics (e.g. prius), and the vast, vast, majority of your sales are going to be automatic so thats what you sadly have to develop platforms for.
joelk111@reddit
You're very correct, but I still want it. Maybe I'll have to pine after a manual CR-Z to try it out.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I tried a modified one with a boosted electric powertrain & supercharged engine once (honda/HPD used to offer the supercharger + exhaust as a dealer-installed option), that was an absolute hoot.
The standard CR-Z's are interesting cars but very slow. More fun than a prius for sure, but I just want to set your expectations low.
Benjammin172@reddit
I agree with you. If they tried to remake the S2000, I think they’d end up losing the things that made people love it in the first place. That, or it’ll become a 4500 pound EV.
With all of that said, I’d still be feverishly hammering f5 until a spy shot dropped if they announced a new one.

Ford Maverick is the only thing that’ll come close to what you’re looking for in the modern age. US Crash Safety Standards pretty much make any small car like that no longer possible.
Gunslingermomo@reddit
I do miss the old smaler trucks. But for most people, if you're just using it for space/cargo, why not a CUV/SUV? The enclosed space makes it more aero than a wind sucking truck bed.
I had a 2008 CR-V that worked great for most things, when I had to move I put a u-haul trailer on it. When I had to move a fridge I put an open u-haul trailer on it, $20/day unlimited miles. I don't think most people have use cases for trucks smaller than a Maverick when there are so many CUVs out there.

It absolutely is until you drive it. I secured financing and walked into dealership ready to buy with no haggling based on Internet reviews and stats. It has an extraordinary delay on acceleration to the point that I think it's a safety issue. Hit accelerator, have a conversation, then it starts to roll.
Everything else about it is great. I test drove turbo and lower model, then tried again with my spouse to make sure it wasn't in my head. We're not talking about a 4 cylinder taking time to get up to speed, but a serious delay in response at all.
If they came out with a version that had pickup comparable to anything similar, I'd trade in, but maverick and trucks 2x the size just do what you ask them to.
the_mustard_king@reddit
Except it’s literally ugly as all hell :(
I say that as someone who drives a Subaru Baja and would kill for a modern version, on paper the SC is great but my god I hate looking at it
1PistnRng2RuleThmAll@reddit
Well, most trucks (and sedans, really) have four doors now. It makes sense that a modern day el Camino would too.
Stone_The_Rock@reddit
Fourth generation Lincoln continental.
Exact same body. Same doors. Same proportions. Magnetic Ride. Electric drivetrain.
It’s a car that’s meant to be seen, not heard. The epitome of money talks, wealth whispers.
BagBoiJoe@reddit
Dig it. The return of the personal luxury car.
a_sensible_guy@reddit
I’ve long felt that it’s a very simple thing for Chevy. Take a Camaro. Cut it up. Add a bed. Call it the El Camino. Offer the SS trim. Profit.
BagBoiJoe@reddit
I can see why you don't work for GM, then.
ChuckoRuckus@reddit
I’m all for the Camino. I own a 68.
However, I could see the S10 or LUV being more successful. Separate bed/cab is more economical and easier to make regular, ext, and crew cab versions. Make engine options the turbo 2.0L, turbo 2.7L, and the 5.3L (maybe a 3.6 TT for a Xtreme, though I prefer the V8). Keep the weight down, close to 3000 lbs and a payload of 1000. Possibly a EV variant. Thing would sell like mad.
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Those two will never happen due to any trucklet having a transverse layout in order to meet emissions and fuel economy targets.
And no fucking way GM revives the LS4 just for that.
mantenner@reddit
Ford falcon existed until recently.
rob_s_458@reddit
GM's Aussie sub also made the Ute/Maloo until 2017. They even planned to import them as a Pontiac G8 ST but cancelled the project (and then folded Pontiac) before ever doing so.
mantenner@reddit
Indeed. Americans weren't interested in the Commodore for the same reason Aussies slowly lost interest in them and sales declined. Too much money and too little features compared to competitors for the same price.
Charming-Loan-1924@reddit
We had no idea the Chevrolet SS was a thing because they did not fucking advertise it at all. Otherwise, instead of buying my C5 Corvette, I would’ve bought an SS .
velociraptorfarmer@reddit
Chevy didn't want to sell the SS. The only reason they brought that thing over was to satisfy a contract to produce X number (I can't remember if it was overall, or X number that they agreed to import to the states) of vehicles.
Alternative_Ask364@reddit
The SS was only brought to America to fulfill a contractual obligation with Holden. As far as I know basically the only advertising they did was making Chevy's NASCAR cup cars the Chevy SS.
Notably the manual variants literally haven't depreciated since they were new. The automatic variants are also holding value well, with only high mileage models dipping below $25k. Not bad at all for a car that was $45k when it was new more than a decade ago
Stevedaveken@reddit
I LOVED my SS until a valve dropped into cylinder 5 and grenaded the engine. :(
Charming-Loan-1924@reddit
Why did you not keep it and have the engine rebuilt?
Granddy01@reddit
Aluminum 6.2 expensive....
Same thing with rect port ls heads....
OMGpawned@reddit
I have a neighbor who has a fleet of those things they are ex cop cars from I don’t know where because I know here in SoCal they never used the SS as police vehicles. He got them at an auction for pennies on the dollar years ago and he has like three or four of them in his front yard still black and white and with the pillar spot lights.
RichardNixon345@reddit
That sounds more like the Caprice which were reworked VE Commodores (G8)
Granddy01@reddit
Caprices are their own thing from Commodores.
They are based on the WM Statemen thou both do use the exact same Zeta platform.
OMGpawned@reddit
Yeah, that might be it. I do know they have an LS V8 in them. I don’t know what iteration but it’s kind of cool that he got them for very cheap and they are actually pretty fast cars with robust drive trains. He has plans to make one of them into a Ute but I don’t think it ever got off the ground. lol
Granddy01@reddit
Common misconception of the Chevy SS.
It was marketed heavily in the Nascar scene for Chevy/GM of being the body design of choice for their team in the mid 2010s since surely Americans LOVE to watch Nascar. Didn't really work out.
Also SS is borderline C7 Corvette money outside of 150k+ mile examples.
rob_s_458@reddit
I would love to import a Maloo once it becomes legal to do so (see also my current mini-truck). But last time I checked prices were already going up on them. Once Americans can import them, they might be asking $100k on BaT
_2ndclasscitizen_@reddit

mantenner@reddit
Prices are already pretty insane here let alone to import one for you guys.
Alternative_Ask364@reddit
There are a handful of converted G8s and SSs in the states that are a sight to behold. I know there's one lime green SS conversion lurking around the Twin Cities in Minnesota that I've seen a few times.

A few options that immediately come to mind:
Ford RS200
Toyota Celica GT4 (AWD with the 3-cylinder and a coupe body style)
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 (could potentially be the comeback of the century)
Porsche 944 or 968 (Porsche's investment into front-engine development with the Panamera could translate well to a small-wheelbase grand tourer-style coupe)
BMW M1 (to make up for the i8)
event_horizon_@reddit
+1 for the RS200, one of my favorite cars
axelguntherc@reddit
The 3000 GT Cross would fit nicely between the Eclipse Cross and Outlander.
probsdriving@reddit
Upvote for 944. With the 718 leaving soon Porsche needs something in the sub-$100k sports car bracket that isn’t just a CPO 911.
A 944 revival would be really interesting. Maybe even throw the 2.5L up front and make the BRZ that Subaru never could.
CameronsTheName@reddit
Toyota missed the perfect golden opportunity to call the 4 cylinder A90 Supra a "Celica," they could have slapped a slightly less aggressive body kit and two back seats in it to make it more user friendly.
spacefret@reddit
I would love a modern 944. I feel like the current GR86/BRZ are the closest thing, being small 4-cylinder coupes.
Turbox39@reddit
944 also popped into my head, curious to how they’d price a reboot these days
uchigaytana@reddit
I'd hope it'd be closer to GR86 prices, but it's far more likely that it'd be priced near a Supra or M2. Something tells me modern Porsche would see a low-priced car as "devaluing the brand"
Thomas_633_Mk2@reddit
Surely the easier path with the Panamera that already has a V8 is to shorten it slightly, chop off two doors and call it the 928?
uchigaytana@reddit
It would be easiest to do that, but it'd also be cool to see some kind of collaboration with VW (like with the original 924) to put the EA888 into a RWD platform.
rudyrudes15@reddit
I was looking for someone to say the 3000GT!
Tuxedo_Muffin@reddit
I believe that any 2 of these could exist if the respective companies co-developed a platform. Except an M1, that would 100% have to be a limited production halo. But I could see Ford/Mitsubishi, Toyota/Porsche, or any combination teaming up.
uchigaytana@reddit
That makes sense - I think Toyota/Mitsubishi could be cool, since they'd both be AWD coupes. Especially if they primarily collaborated on chassis development and put their own respective engines in to differentiate the two products, similar to how the Supra/Z4 are similar platforms with different bodywork and transmissions.
I really can't imagine Ford/Mitsubishi working out, though, since Mitsubishi has never worked on a mid-engined model to my knowledge.
Amate087@reddit
I would like the Celica GT4, hehehehe. I have an ST185 and it would be nice to see what Toyota would do today with those aggressive designs they sell now.
uchigaytana@reddit
I like to imagine the front end would be something of a cross between the new Prius and the GR Corolla, since the Celica has always had more playful styling than its contemporaries. However, I feel like there's a good chance they'd go the same direction as the TT and end up making the latest front end way too aggressive to appeal to the modern buyer.
Amate087@reddit
I also imagine that design line of the current Prius although they don't sell it here, in photos it looks nice!
Muscled body type GR86/GR Supra and with some carbon parts (it is what is popular today, like the GR Yaris) is just a guess.

Chrysler Turbine Car but make it a hybrid and run it on biodiesel. A modern version of that powerplant as a 100kw range extender/generator would be godlike in a hybrid. It'd only need around a 50-mile nominal range on pure electric, it'd barely be as loud as a vacuum cleaner, and it'd have low emissions and low heat (the exhaust of the original was cooler than a piston engine since it had a heat exchanger)
It'd have significantly lower maintenance costs all around on account of having less than a dozen moving parts. Plus a much cheaper, smaller, lighter battery whose creation, recycling, and replacement would all have much less combined impact on the environment and slave labor /horrid mining conditions involved in cobalt mining.
Combine that with tailfin styling and a premium interior (hopefully full of nice analog or pseudo-analog gauges and chrome/wood trim) and it'd be a smash hit.
vantageviewpoint@reddit
Modern cars are a lot quieter than vacuum cleaners.
Drunken_Hamster@reddit
Maybe purely at the exhaust, but not including all the engine noise and whatnot. I also didn't specify whether that volume was exterior (heard by the world) or interior (by occupants), though I do mean exterior. Additionally, not all vacuum cleaners are the same loudness, and lastly, with modern upgrades, it'd likely be even quieter than whatever might count as an average vacuum cleaner.

How's this one for a long shot:
I would love to see a Lincoln Mark VIIII
Mustang chassis, the H/O 3.5 Ecoboost that isn't currently sold in a RWD Car plus the 10 speed, revive that air spring function that lowers the car at speed combined with modern magnetic shocks and Navigator level nice interior. Little smaller than a Challenger, about BMW 8 series size. Or have the 2.7 as the base engine and the 3.5 HO as the LSC. Do some ridiculous special edition with the GT500 powertrain.
I wouldn't sell worth a shit but it'd be so damn cool. Maybe even add a battery and some motors to power the front wheels for traction on launch and lightening up the MPG for city driving to pass EPA if you have to.
thunderun53@reddit
Mark IX. Lincoln shit the bed once they gave up on an American GT car in the Mark VIII. I had one. It was an absolute cruise missile that rode on a cloud. It didn't turn for crap and was useless if the pavement was even damp, but it was so fun.
sohcgt96@reddit
Damn I failed on the Roman Numerals there. So I actually put a 1998 Mark VIII engine in my 1996 Mustang GT, everyone wanted way too much money for Cobra engines. Would absolutely still roll in a clean Mark VIII today. How you like the 850i? That's on my "If everything goes really well in the next few years" possibility list.
thunderun53@reddit
The 850 is an absolute dream. I went from a Jaguar F Type R to the 850 so the engine performance was pretty similar. Everything else was better in the BMW. It's smooth and quiet when I want to be an old man, but it can get loud and wild when I want to be a teenager. I drove the M8 also. It was great for a pure sports feel but it is a one trick pony. It's just always punchy and ready to race. The 850i is multi dimensional. And the M8 seats were murder after 3 miles of driving.
The only downside I've found so far is people used to stand around and take pictures of the Jag. It was a magnet for all kinds of attention. The only people who want to see my BMW are other BMW 8 series owners so that eliminates the pretty blonde woman segment entirely.

Enthusiasts have been crying out for Toyota to turbocharge the 86. Why? Because that would pretty much turn it into a modern interpretation of the Nissan Silvia. And it would make a lot of sense from a marketing perspective - the GTR is a bit long in the tooth. The 400Z is cool but well beyond what most enthusiasts can afford. Nissan's entry level offerings? Pathetic. Fix that with a Silvia S16.
And I put my money where my mouth is on this one by buying a BMW 230i, the closest thing you can get to the Silvia's formula today, and retrofitting it with a proper LSD to fix its biggest weakness. Now its a spectacular car that's unfortunately overshadowed by the more powerful M240i & M2 siblings.
Infinite-Potato-9605@reddit
I totally get the longing for a turbocharged 86, but retrofitting can really be the way to personalize a ride. Your BMW 230i project sounds like a perfect example of tuning a car to fit the Silvia spirit. I recently saw someone on Reddit who retrofitted an LSD into a car similar to yours, and it seemed like a game changer for handling and performance. It’s fascinating to see how enthusiasts are bridging the gap between classic inspirations and modern tech. Platforms like Reddit are awesome for sharing and finding ideas for mods. I’ve found it quite useful to also check out sites like Jalopnik for reviews or connect with fellow enthusiasts using services that provide tailored automotive insights. UsePulse, for instance, can even help you monitor Reddit mentions or discussions about modifications and cars, connecting you with more retrofit ideas or market trends to follow. It’s like having a heads up on what everyone else is loving or working on.

Yeah, basically. The best effort is Acura's Integra. The type-s is a good car but really overpriced and not as pretty as the old integra's/RSXs. And I'd take a less powerful NA engine over the turbo.
axelguntherc@reddit
I'll be completely honest, it looks very RSX-y. The old four eye integras looked so damn good though.
Gunslingermomo@reddit
I think the back does. The front is not through, it's got a big flat front face that would messes up the shape. It's like two separate cars put together, the front is boxy and stout, the back is sleek and small. If the front was wedge shaped and aero, and had headlights that complimented the tail lights, it would have been beautiful. It's a small lightweight car and the front end doesn't match that vibe.

The S2000 and MR2 Turbo both could be revived together.
Both brands don't want to spend as much on a single 1 off vehicle that's meh volume.
They could share a mid engined chassis engineered to work with their turbo engines.
The GR 3 Cyl for the Toyota could be their top dog in the MR2 and the CTR engine in the S2000.
Both a small removable roof (targa) style coupe. Initially offering both in just manual with an Automatic in year 2 for both (S2K getting Accord 2.0T + Honda 10 speed).
No hybrid system in either but having the top removable and placable behind the seats or at the top of the trunk like the C7-C8 Coupes would be preferable.
What would be great is if they could do the MR2 as a more long geared version and the S2K gets a shorter 1-5 gearing than the CTR while getting the same or taller 6th.

It would need a special power train unless they used the ct4v and it couldn't be more expensive than the ct4v. Buick has had a GS version that was a sportier version of the regal for a while now and you rarely see them because they're rebadged opels and not competitive.

ThenaJuno@reddit
The Solstice is a wonderful car, and it's a convertible!
But it's not a mid engine, Ferrari knock-off, that sold for $10-15K in 1984-88.
I've had 2 of them (I now have a Miata), and the only thing I wished for back then was 200 hp.
THEBESTMAN95@reddit
Fair enough you got a good point. The front engine dynamics are interesting but i would die for it to be mid engine.

The original MSRP for a 1987 Pontiac Fiero GT 2 Door Coupe was $13,489, which is about $23,000 in today's dollars.

First mid engine development for the Corvette began in 1958 under Duntov. It’s a reason why they saved the Zora name as a top performance trim for a mid engine version.

The semi-reboot of the quattro was the TT RS. The drivetrain layout of the ur-quattro prevents it from handling well enough to compete with the 911, while the TT RS's drivetrain prevents it from having any true RWD bias in its handling characteristics. The RS/S5 are closer, but don't have the right look. Maybe it could reboot as an EV with 3 or 4 motors, but then you lose the iconic sound. Overall, I wouldn't have faith in them to get this one right.

Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. The old car was rock solid reliable, super robust and reliable, and comfortable and spacious for everything you can throw at it.
It had the 4.6L SOHC V8 putting out 250bhp, 4 speed automatic with overdrive, fixed rear axle, and weighed about 4,400 pounds.
The panther platform which also is used for the Mercury Marauder and Lincoln Town Car, is super popular because of its reliability, predictable handling, and solid performance.
The platform was discontinued in 2012 to the dismay of its many fans and to this day, many panther cars are still on the road.
Ford can simply update it by giving it its ubiquitous 3.7 V6 Ecotec that puts out 300bhp in its various cars and SUVs, along with the current 6 speed automatic transmission, and fully independent suspension.
That's all it needs, keep the roomy interior and huge trunk and it's good to go for another 25 years easy.
