I remember she never once said “ I see (my name) when she looked through that mirror at the end. Not even an unusual name. It was one of the most popular names when I was born.
My Aunt was Miss Mary Anne for Romper Room in the SF Bay Area out of Oakland from 67 to 80. My sister was on it, I was supposed to, and I got the name in the mirror a couple times. Inside connection. Lol
My sister was one of the kids on Romper Room. They went into NY bc a family friends son was supposed to be on it. Moment of truth: he cried and cried… My sister was backstage, plucked from obscurity and went on Romper Room! (…and then went right back into obscurity after it.)
I remember having the little metal pedal powered fire engine when I was 4/5 years old. I rode it so much that for years there was a bare track around the trees in the front yard a trail to the back yard and around the trees in the back yard. Even when I was 14 you could still see where it was.
I had a little school friend who lived in a house so large it didn’t seem real. She and I liked the same kind of gum (Fruit Stripe) and the same pattycake songs and that seemed to be the basis for our friendship. She had all these new dolls and toys, including a pedal car. It was so fancy I almost cried when I climbed into it during a play date at her house. Drove it around her patio for what seemed like hours while she jumped rope until her mom made us come inside for sandwiches and tea (also fancy). Her house felt safe. Her mom never yelled and nothing smelled like pot or cigarettes.
That’s kind of you. It was rough. I had other friends who had it much worse. But it’s true, a child should be able to thrive. They shouldn’t have to survive their childhood.
We had to draw the tires and details on our ~~cardboard box~~ car. Pot pie tin on a nail was the steering wheel. Couch cushions were the seats until we got in trouble and had to put them back, then we used our bed pillows. Then it was a matter of getting someone to push you in it so you could go for a drive. Parents were busy smoking and ignoring us, so we were had to convince our friends to push us, and if there was a disagreement, that car usually went down the stairs at some point, with one of us in it.
I loved these so much. (I didn't have one but I sure wanted one.) I've seen a number of Romper Room nostalgia posts, but this is the first one with my favorite thing!
Romper Room was a big deal in America. My husband talks about the Romper Room record he had when he was little.
"Thus began my music odyssey, U2, The Cars, Bauhaus, KMFDM, The Chemical Brothers....and it all began with my Romper Room record." *he smooths his beard*
I have hunted for that music and I can't find it. Since I'm from Spain I had something different.

That sounds like a rough way to grow up. Glad you at least had a good friend.

I also had a cardboard box for my first car when I was a child but it didn’t have a fancy image on the side. Plain cardboard for us poors!
