What is everyone’s bed time & get up time?
Posted by no-puedo-encontrar@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 663 comments
I’m dubbed a ‘night owl’. Bed is usually 1am and I get up at 08:45am (wfh at 9am).
I’m slowly trying to learn that, regardless of being a night owl or a morning person, I still use my time productively but that’s a culture shift that we need to move on from about night owls being unproductive.
So just out of curiosity, what time does everyone go to bed and get up and why?
6000Doors_LilPeaches@reddit
3 or 4 am and sleep to 11 am on my nights off (I work graveyard shifts from 6:30 pm to 7 am.)
themissing10mm@reddit
Too late and too early
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
In bed by 9.30pm, usually up around 9am. I used to stay up for 5 days at a time due to insomnia so I'm just glad to finally have a normal sleeping pattern.
Extreme-Kangaroo-842@reddit
As someone who used to suffer from insomnia as well, most of these replies can go fuck themselves, the judging cunts, who have no idea what it's like.
Unless you've suffered from insomnia you have no idea how awful it is. A sleepless night we all have. Imagine having that night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night after night.
It's not that insomniacs don't sleep. They do. But it's pitiful. I used to dream I was awake - that was my insomnia.
Or dream i'm waking up. Then I would. Cue wide awake mode.
There's nothing worse for an insomniac than some cretin adding to your anxiety by being holier than thou.
Darkmoon_UK@reddit
Mate FWIW I don't underestimate it... Sounds like hell. Hope things are better now.
Extreme-Kangaroo-842@reddit
Thank you fellow Redditor, that means a lot. It is hell, and having a partner who can fall asleep, as I have, like flicking a light switch makes it much, much worse. It's the anxiety of it that's the true hell. Knowing that you're in for a bad night.
But, yes, things are much better now as I found various things over the decades to help me sleep.
I used to use booze but that's a short term fix that can lead to longer term problems. Never go that route.
I tried lavender, eating lettuce etc and nothing worked.
I had kids 20 years ago and, boy, that helped a lot. A bit of a reset switch in all honesty. The exhaustion of that, coupled with trying to grab minutes of sleep here and there, meant I probably slept better than I ever did before. But I wouldn't recommend having kids to solve insomnia :-)
But in my now later years I've found that a cup of Red Bush (Roobios) tea an hour before I go to sleep knocks me the hell out. It may be a placebo, it may not. I don't care as it works for me.
Praetalis@reddit
Then someone says, yeah I didn't get much sleep either. They had 7 and a half hours instead of 8.
You don't know the meaning of not much sleep until you've gone to work after 43 minutes of "sleep". A bad night's sleep isn't the same as insomnia.
shampoo_moustache@reddit
What tranquillisers are you on to go from no sleep to 9.30pm bedtime please? Asking for educational purposes
cornflakegirl658@reddit
Thc works, i have a prescription
Ecstatic_Ratio5997@reddit
Lozarepam helps and it’s not psychoactive.
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
I found smoking CBD flower really helps.
shampoo_moustache@reddit
Could one vape such a thing hypothetically and potentially obtain the same effect?
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
Definitely! I vape CBD too, but I found that actually smoking the bud (no THC) works a hell of a lot better!
Aggressive_Form7470@reddit
am i right in thinking that CBD is legal in england? does it affect your mood or behaviour in any way? I dont really understand it tbh but I’m interested
shampoo_moustache@reddit
Cheers I'll have to look into that

Kaioken64@reddit
You do not have a normal sleeping pattern. 11.5 hours is ridiculous.
deathbypuppies_@reddit
Hypersomnia is a thing.
Kaioken64@reddit
Yes it is. And it's not normal to have, hence me saying op doesn't have a normal sleeping pattern.
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
I don't sleep for that long, I just get in bed at that time. I sleep around 11.
flippertyflip@reddit
It's still incredibly long
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
I don't understand why people are making an issue out of this.
flippertyflip@reddit
No issue.
Just stating that your sleeping pattern isn't 'normal' as you claimed.
Whatever works for you though. I wish I slept so well.
Hideious@reddit
Thats the right amount for a woman
WilkosJumper2@reddit
Women do not require 11 hours of sleep
pinkylovesme@reddit
Ridiculous.Women need on average 11 more minutes sleep than men
Kaioken64@reddit
That's not as bad, but 10 hours still seems excessive. Glad you got over your insomnia though, sleeping 10 hours is a hell of a lot better than not sleeping for 5 days.
futurenotgiven@reddit
women need between 8-10 hours of sleep. the 8 hour idea is only a thing because when they were doing sleep studies they only did it on men. more recent studies have shown that women actually need longer, 10 hours is reasonable
MoonMouse5@reddit
Now my girlfriend falling asleep super early all the time makes perfect sense
Aggressive_Form7470@reddit
tbf I’m a grown adult and need at least 10 hours a night. with no alarm, I’d sleep 12 easily. some people just need a lot of sleep. any less than 9hrs in one night and I’m broken for two days straight!! it sucks but thats just how i’m built haha.
What-problem@reddit
Same, I go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 7.30am. If I stay awake beyond 9pm for more than a night, I need to make up for it by going to sleep at 8pm the following night and sleep in until 8am. Ideally, I'd have a longer lay in in the morning, but my kids and husband get up at 7am. Before I had kids, 12 hours was the daily norm and I've even slept 24 hours+ as a teen.
No health concerns, it's just the way I've always been. My husband has always been the opposite and needs hardly any sleep at all, which was ideal when we had babies. Because cutting down on sleep made me non-functional as a human being, whereas my husband could take it in his stride like he was built for it.
Hideious@reddit
I'm like this too, but I've recently noticed that people who say it's too much sleep spend the vast majority of their day sitting down and barely moving at all.
Steelhorse91@reddit
Work a heavy manual job. On my feet except for break times… I sleep 6 hours tops then wake up alarm or not. I can force myself back to sleep if I’m a bit physically exhausted, but I don’t really need it.
Technical-Elk-7002@reddit
Some people need more sleep than others. If you’re fine on 6h then that’s good for you
A900909@reddit
I need 10-11 hours tbh, people have different lives and different needs. Maybe this person has health conditions like me
Steelhorse91@reddit
Been solidly in that DSPD/night out camp since puberty. I get exhausted and sick all the time if I try to work anything other than afternoons or night shifts.
A900909@reddit
Me too ☹️ taken years to get over the guilt and shame. Only thing that ever worked 100% effectively is going camping for long periods with 0 electronics but not exactly sustainable.
oljackson99@reddit
Well to be fair it’s a lot more normal than his previous five days without sleep.
Phil1889Blades@reddit
That’s from one extreme to the other.
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
Well not really, I sleep about 8 hours, I just get in bed early.
SirPooleyX@reddit
Hmm. You've gone from 11.5 hours (9.30pm - 9am), then saying it was more like 10 hours (11pm - 9am) and now you've got it down to 8 hours.
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
A question was asked, I answered. I don't know what your problem is.
AvatarIII@reddit
You go to bed at 9:30 and fall asleep at 1am? What do you do for 3.5 hours? Just lay in bed waiting to fall asleep?
rocketscientology@reddit
did you miss the bit about insomnia? when i’m having a bad bout of it it can easily take me 2+ hours to fall asleep, and then i’ll often wake up for at least another hour or two around 3am.
AvatarIII@reddit
Sorry I thought the implication was you used to have insomnia but now you have a normal sleeping pattern.
It still sounds like you have insomnia you just go to bed early to mitigate it.
rocketscientology@reddit
i’m not the original commenter above - but even if they are managing to sleep for 8 hours, what i was suggesting was that the extra time spent in bed might be because it takes them 2+ hours to fall asleep, like it occasionally does for me. my insomnia is nowhere near as bad as it used to be and i generally manage 8 hours, but i sometimes have to spend a lot longer than 8 hours in bed to achieve that.
Phil1889Blades@reddit
Ok then. Not sure that’s the answer to the question though.
emjayeff-ranklin@reddit
The question was literally "what time does everyone go to bed".
Phil1889Blades@reddit
Do you think they meant that or go to bed and sleep?
Abladam89@reddit
You must only get about 3 hours to yourself on a work day 😱
bekijdr228@reddit
Same, my meds make me tired
_justagirl76_@reddit
Bed by 4am in the morning wake up by 11 and then short naps all day long. Its been worse for so long.
MagicMadejeski@reddit
An hour before midnight is worth 2 afterwards.
Apart_Supermarket441@reddit
Normally sleep around 11.15 or so in the week. First alarm goes off at 6.40, get up about 6.50.
I’m always exhausted when I wake up, and in the evenings after work, but this routine generally has me feeling ok in the work day.
At the weekend, I’ll go to sleep about half 12 and wake up around 9.
Shannoonuns@reddit
I go to bed from 10:00-10:30 depending on how interested i am in the news.
I then set my alarm for 5:50 if I need a shower or 6:15 if i don't need a shower. I will then struggle to stay awake until like 7:20 ish by which I'm finally dressed and im able to manage to shuffle downstairs for breakfast.
I then leave at 8:00 - 8:20 depending on traffic to get to work for 9.
I know I should probably just set my alarm for 7:20 ish but I think i will just keep falling either way.
shampoo_moustache@reddit
This thread has made me feel rather abnormal for sleeping beyond 10pm, is everyone on reddit secretly in their 80s?
Deep-Procrastinor@reddit
Well I can't speak for anyone else but I have this thing called a job which insists I arrive there at 6am and stay there until 6pm.
thecrius@reddit
12 hours shift? What job?
saccerzd@reddit
Lots of jobs have 12hr shifts. Often you do 4 days on 4 days off with these sort of shift pattern.
thecrius@reddit
I am aware, albeit I don't know anyone doing a 12-hour shift, which is why I asked.
saccerzd@reddit
Soz, I misunderstood
Kcufasu@reddit
Tbh that sounds kinda perfect. I'd rather work longer on days I'm focused on working and then get a full 4 days off 8-5:30 office days with just 2 days of weekend recovery sucks
ramxquake@reddit
It means you can't really do anything on your working days, you don't have time to wind down after work so you never sleep properly, you can't have any hobbies that require a routine or schedule. Can't get a workout routine that fits.
Deep-Procrastinor@reddit
I only do 3 on 4 off however that doesn't detract from the fact that I'm still knackered for 4 days of the week.
pinkylovesme@reddit
I wish
massdebate159@reddit
I've just changed my hours to a 4 night duty. 9.30pm-7.30am Monday to Thursday. It used to be 5 nights, til 6am. But Friday off now. Woo!
Canipaywithclaps@reddit

ramxquake@reddit
Some of us have to get up early for work.
ProtoplanetaryNebula@reddit
I feel tired around 6-7PM and get a second wind of energy and clarity around 9PM and go to sleep around 1AM.
I'm always tired in the mornings.
boudicas_shield@reddit
I’m the same. And it wouldn’t work to go to bed as early as 8 or 9 for me; I’d fall asleep and be up at 2am with zero chance of falling back asleep. I have always been this way, no matter what my work or school schedule was. I think it’s just how my body naturally functions.
ThickTadpole3742@reddit
Exactly the same as me!! After getting in from work I could easily go to bed / sleep. Come actual 'bed time' I'm wide awake. And I'm always tired too.
shampoo_moustache@reddit
Similar with me and we are both clearly doing something wrong. Thanks for the solidarity
ProtoplanetaryNebula@reddit
I don’t know that it’s wrong though, i prefer it this way. Being in bed before 10pm sounds miserable to me.
pyott20@reddit
So many fun things happen after 10pm
VolcanicBear@reddit
I find one of the benefits of being an adult is I can do pretty much what I want, when I want. "After 10pm" is relatively meaningless in terms of fun things happening.
pyott20@reddit
No doubt, but from personal experiences, lots of fun things have happened in my life during the twilight hours
Steelhorse91@reddit
Only sleeping once a night is development of the last few hundred years of industrialisation. Before that people would have a little sleep early evening, get up for a bit in the night, then go back to sleep again.
saccerzd@reddit
And 'second sleep' seems to have been such a normal, common thing that it's hardly mentioned in literature etc. people would get up, read, make love, chat to the neighbours etc for a few hours then go back to sleep. Fascinating that everybody did it and now basically nobody does it.
Speshal__@reddit
Bi-phasic sleep, I do this, bed about 9 up around 2 back to bed at 5, I'm running late/early today.
mark-smallboy@reddit
That sounds tortuous
thecrius@reddit
Same. Around 8pm I could just drop dead. But if I push through (and I have to, post dinner things to do), I get sleepy again only around midnight. I should wake up around 7AM, usually it's not until 7.20AM and I'm always tired.
I am testing for sleep disorder though. Wife says I am loud snoring so maybe the waking up tired is also that.
Publish_Lice@reddit
Do you look at screens a lot in the evening?
Massive-Plonker@reddit

mattoisacatto@reddit
normal start for work is 7AM so I'm normally up just after 6, always plan to be ready to switch everything off and sleep by midnight though I do drift over.
Works surprisingly well considering it only leaves me 6 hours at the best but through most of the year I'm lucky to get home from work by 9PM so going to bed earlier doesn't leave me much time for myself. works for me, maybe not for most I spose.
yearsofpractice@reddit
Hey OP. 48 year old married father of two here. I go to bed as early as possible to allow me to do the following - I get up at 6:30 to ensure there’s enough time to remind the kids that the following needs to be done before school. Every single day. Each step in this precise order.
PUT YOUR SHOES ON NOW
Then take them to school. Then start my working day.
EDIT - related video - https://vm.tiktok.com/ZGd15DcCv/

It appears a lot of your problems would be resolved by disconnecting the TV in the morning haha.
Apart from that, it sounds like your children are unusually challenging so you have my sympathies.
yearsofpractice@reddit
Ha! You’re right about the TV thing. I might just try that… (in reality, my kids are a nice pair of little rascals - I’m just playing up to my u/yearsofpractice persona… confused and frustrated is his normal state, whereas the real me is much more relaxed. But thank you for your kind words, they’re genuinely appreciated!)

Work days 1am-2am, wake up 8am. Weekends 2am wake up 11am.
Daggerbite@reddit
Mostly the same... its a good night if I get into bed by midnight, its usually just after. Then I will not go to sleep until 1-1.30 am. Alarm goes off at 7.45
Weekends tend to stay up a bit later but stay in bed till 9am
Vivid-Bill-4706@reddit
Finally someone else has the same sleep pattern as meet, midweek anyway. I'm asleep by 1-2am and wake midweek at 7:15-7:30am and at weekends I might make it to 8-8:30am.
Phil1889Blades@reddit
I’d be knackered all week with 6-7 hours.
PurpleEsskay@reddit
5-6 hours a night here, can confirm, permanently tired and massive brain fog most of the day. Not easy to get into a better routine.
Phil1889Blades@reddit
Do you struggle to get to sleep or wake up early or is that just what your body thinks works for you? My body would say no to that. I’d be afternoon napping etc
PurpleEsskay@reddit
Struggle to get to sleep, end up waking up pretty much the same time every day though.

shaneo632@reddit
I usually sleep about 6 hours a night. I just spent a week on holiday with no alarms and got 8-9 hours sleep every night, felt like my brain got a wash lmao, felt so refreshed. Gonna see if I can get 7 hours sleep a night now I'm back.
rafr0f@reddit
I'm usually in bed by 10 and have a scroll/read to get myself tired. Sleeping by 11 and the alarm goes off at 7am. Not as exciting as my freelance years and would frequently sleep at 3am and wake up around 10am. Thems were the days. Definitely a night owl and miss those days watching rubbish telly/Netflix until my eyes couldn't stay open
Beanruz@reddit
With a 10 day old baby. I only have get up time. And that's all fricking night.
killit@reddit
The number of people who told us that that's the easy time when they're little, and we'll look back on it fondly. It's best not to get into it with them, because most don't seem to understand that all babies are different.
Ours is 1, and those first few weeks, maybe running into a few months (can't quite remember, it was all a blur), were fucking brutal. Looked like I'd aged 10 years, no joke. But it did get better. It's still not ideal, I've just got her to sleep in my arms as I write this, it's midnight. Last night was 2am, but at least it's not 45min of sleep followed by 1:30hrs of trying to get them back to sleep, rinse and repeat from 4-5am though until 1pm every. Single. Day.
Now it's dream feeds. My other half handles that mostly herself, and since it's a sleeping feed, everyone's back down very quickly. Makes a MASSIVE difference.
Good luck, and get lots of videos, not just photos. Record all the noises they make. It's tough to remember when you're a walking zombie yourself, but it's worth it.
samejhr@reddit
Holy moly I don’t appreciate how easy we have it.
Ours is 8 months now and has a bedtime of 19:30. I take her up at 19:15, give her a bath, read a book, put her in her cot and just walk away, she’s asleep by the time I walk downstairs and check the monitor. Works like a charm every night!
She usually wakes up around 4pm but we just give her a quick top-up and she goes down again.
killit@reddit
That sounds like a dream come true lol
grey-zone@reddit
Who says that the first few months with a baby are easy? Are they insane?
To be fair I think many women are preprogrammed to forget the worst of it, otherwise it would be bad for the species!!
BrightonTownCrier@reddit
In my 2 child experience the first couple of weeks are easier because they sleep most of the time, are very light and haven't really found their voice yet. Then it all turns to shit and only starts to get better after a year or so.
grey-zone@reddit
Similar to my experience. The first couple of weeks there is more sleep, but it is all crazy new and scary first time it happens!
Realistic-Analyst-23@reddit
Some people are just blessed with easy babies. I know of two whose baby just constantly slept. Had to wake them to feed them.
heywhatwait@reddit
I once met a couple who had two boys. Because the first was such an ‘easy’ baby, they were happy to have a second. They said that if the second child had been born first, they would never have had another.
BrightonTownCrier@reddit
That's us, first one is now 7. He's never slept more than a couple of hours in our bed when he's been ill (he would take himself off back to his bed even when he was 3), was in his own room at 6 months and generally was/is a treat. Second one is now 14 months old, needed constant holding to sleep for the first 9 months ish, now only really sleeps properly in our bed, can hardly self soothe and really seems to relish destroying/moving everything he can.
We was tricked I tell ya.
heywhatwait@reddit
Ooh, you have my sympathies 😬 Still, got to love ‘em.
Pilbzz@reddit
Biology trap.
Pilbzz@reddit
2nd this. 1st baby was easy. He just slept all the time. 2nd baby though…she is awake all the time! She is not happy unless she is cuddled up next to you or carrying her around with you. And if you dare to sit down while carrying her, well it’s game over.
Emotional_Ad8259@reddit
We've got this T-shirt. We had to wake him up to feed and then he was sleep-feeding. He was a great baby, but has turned into a typical moody pre-teen.
bumblebeesanddaisies@reddit
I think there are aspects of newborns that are easier but also, the learning curve is a vertical line a mile high! 2nd time around the newborn stage is a bit easier when you know to some extent what you're doing (lol) although all babies are different. The biggest thing, and actually only example I can think of, where newborns are easy is if you put them down and go for a wee, you know they will be exactly where you left them when you come back lol
WilkosJumper2@reddit
They vary massively. I’ve experience both and the incredibly quiet ones can be just as concerning in their own way.
tiorzol@reddit
They're easier in the sense that there's no decisions to make, it's all fire fighting and reactive but it's pretty much the biggest culture shock a human can experience. Going from zero babies to one baby is never easy.
i_like_the_wine@reddit
The wisest of words right here. Ours turned 4 yesterday, and I'm glad I did the videos too because I was in such a sleep-deprived emotional daze that first year or two that I can hardly remember anything. The photos and videos are so lovely to look at now I'm through the hourly wake ups stage.
But wake up time for me now is on average 5.30am as our little boy comes into our bed most nights and he's definitely a lark! So I'm asleep as early as I can manage at night, I've got a helluva deficit to plug.
CiderDrinker2@reddit
Remember, not everyone has to be up: take it in turns. At least one of you gets all-night-in every other night.
Beanruz@reddit
Difficult to do with breast feeding.
CiderDrinker2@reddit
Maybe, my wife and I did it: she'd pump last thing at night to provide milk for the overnight feeds, and I would take the 2300 to 0700 watch; she'd then breastfeed again first thing in the morning. In between, she'd put earplugs in, and get an uninterrupted 8 hours.
HankLard@reddit
I've got another on the way, our current kid sleeps through the night and was doing so by 1yr old. Dreading going back to waking up 10 times a night, but it'll be worth it and it does get better. Hang in there!
Asaxii@reddit
I feel your pain. Our son was preprogrammed like an alarm clock that went off every 2 hours and 58 minutes for feeds. He stayed this way until 10 months old, then he started sleeping 5-8 hours without feeds and now he is on 12 hours sleep. It was rough, and because he would vomit a lot, even after being winded properly. It wasn’t nice.
We just had our first holiday with him, we went back to my wife’s home country, he never slept at good times and would be awake until 3am some nights, he just had very disturbed sleep for the entire time we were there. We think it was a combination of time difference, jet lag, heat difference. His sleep routine was completely destroyed. We have been back In the UK for 3 weeks now and it took me till now just to get him back to his old 12 hour sleep routine. But now he jumps around and is a bit crazy before settling down. But I get a good 4 hours down time to clean, do dishes, take out the rubbish, shower, reset the house for tomorrow and have some me time.
It doesn’t get easier; You get better at it.

2-3am until anywhere between 10am and 1pm depending on the season and how I’m feeling. There comes a random day in about April that I can suddenly get up easier and earlier and then a random day in October where I’m fatigued all the time and getting up later.

Peri-menopausal woman and sleep is vital
notmyworld76@reddit
Why do pre menopausal women need more sleep
siblingrevelryagain@reddit
Because lack of sleep is problematic for everyone, but more so for women in peri/menopause/middle age; sleep is so disrupted by hormone fluctuations that good sleep hygiene can really help;
Cool/temperature controlled room & bedding Regular sleep times Off devices/blue-blocker glasses No alcohol 🥴
For me anecdotally (and other women I’ve talked to), everything in menopause is so much harder without good sleep.
It is also lovely getting up before everyone else and getting outside early, even in bad weather

This is something I'm trying to get more control over. I'm definitely not morning person. I try to be in bed by 10pm but I get distracted easily and have no awareness of time passing so it can suddenly be 11pm before I know it. My alarm goes off at 6am during the week and I try to either go swimming or to the gym before coming back home for breakfast and my medication. I need to leave the house by 8:15am to get to work on time. I'm not hugely successful at any of it yet. I have succeeded in not staying in bed until 10 or 11 am at the weekend, much as I would like to. The alarm is set for 7am on a weekend and I've usually forced myself out of bed by 8am. Still knackered in the mornings though.

Night owls often have often been seen as less productive, I don't know where this culture of sleeping late is lazy. If you're awake the same ammount of time there is no difference.
I also don't judge people who want to actually prioritise sleep. It's so important for your health.
I highly recommend reading why we sleep by Matthew walker.
I used to wake up at 8 and asleep at 12:30 on work nights and weekends 10am with a bed time of 2 or 3.
I am trying to adapt more to my partner who cannot even with late nightssleep past 5:30 - 6.
Currently I do 7am and 11pm
Depth-New@reddit
Night owls are viewed as lazy because, by the time they've gotten out of bed, others have already made significant progress with their day.
Plus, many night owls are forced into sleep routines that don't work for them, which means they're often going to be sleep-deprived and less productive.
Travelliv@reddit
I'm reading that book at the moment and it's incredibly eye-opening, I really don't think we prioritise sleep like we do exercise and healthy eating. But I find it's so hard to make a good routine especially if work hours change and you have to fit in a partner's routine.
My weekday sleep varies as sometimes I get up early depending if I'm in the office or not and I don't think the inconsistency helps (wake up time can go from 6.20am to 8am). personally find it hard to go to bed any earlier than 10.30pm. Weekends I tend to stay up later but I can't lie in anymore and usually wake between 7-8.

The_Real_Macnabbs@reddit
I like to be in bed by 9:30, but in bed does not mean asleep, it means relaxing with a book (no screens) for a while before turning out the light. Wake up time depends on the season and the weather. If it's raining, then time to turn over and snuggle down while running a mental calculation of when I have to be at my desk and working backwards. In the summer, tend to rise earlier to make the most of the light, bright, glorious mornings. In the past, I would regularly stay up to three in the morning reading (while on holiday/weekend).

OK so I'm many years past the early years ages (my kids are 7 and 6 now) but "sleep breeds sleep" isn't as far fetched as you think. If you look up sleep science and sleep hormones it all makes sense. I won't go into the whole science behind it but mostly it's to do with waking and sleeping hormones. If you try and keep your baby, they're brain fires "keep awake" hormones that make it harder to settle. I used to put my baby down for a nap at 4 and she would still go to sleep at normal at 7pm

Bed at 11 up at 6 is my usual routine. I'm quite a heavy sleeper so 7 hours is plenty for me. I usually get in to bed around 10.45 and i'm asleep very quickly. I don't have an alarm or anything and naturally wake up between 5.30 and 6.

I'm awful with going to bed and getting up on time - combination of being a night owl on a daytime schedule and revenge bedtime procrastination! Last night I stayed up reading until 2, and woke up at 7:30 to take my daughter to school.
I once did an experiment when I wasn't working - if I ignore clocks and daylight hours, my body seems happiest with bedtime at 4am and waking up at midday. Sadly this isn't compatible with my job and family life!
bigdaddyeb@reddit
Same as you roughly, 1am to 9am, always have been. Absolutely hated school and any 9-5 jobs I used to have for this reason. I’m a chef now and don’t have to start till 10am so I’m much happier. I think it’s good to tailor your job and life around your own physiological needs, it certainly worked for me.

As a night owl it's so alien to me that people do stuff before work in the morning. I wish I was more of a morning person, I'd love to be able to workout in the morning. I'm in my 30s now so doubt I'll ever be.
Beebeeseebee@reddit
Same here, although with winter coming there won't be much opportunity to do anything after work either - not if I want it to be daylight, anyway. Every year around this time I promise myself I'll try to get up a bit earlier and do stuff in the mornings... maybe this is going to be the year...

On a weeknight I'll often get into bed about 9.30 and read for an hour, then lights out. Alarm is set for 7am, but I usually get woken up by the kids around 6.30. I might have a few drinks on the weekend and stretch it out till midnight. The kids will usually wake me up at the same time regardless.
anonoaw@reddit
Go up to bed at 9pm, asleep at 10pm, up at 530am.
The 530 wake up is because I have a small child who is an early bird, thus the early bedtime is to make me marginally less furious every morning when I’m woken up at 530am. If I consistently get less than 7-8 hours of sleep a night, I am an extremely unpleasant person to be around.
In an ideal world, I’d be asleep at 11-12 and up at 730/8ish.
pointsofellie@reddit
Yeah same. I go to sleep by about half 9 because my toddler wakes up at 6. Menopause is also kicking my arse so I sleep way too much. If I didn't have a child or job I'd probably sleep 11-8.

Naturally? 3-4am sleep, wake up around 10-11am.
However, work dictates otherwise, so I usually go to bed between midnight-1am, wake up 7-8am. Whether I fall asleep is up to chance, sadly. I could go up at 10pm but I won't fall asleep until later unless I'm unwell.

Depends which shift I’m working as I work at a gym, usually on the opening shift so I’ll wake up around 4:30-4:45am to get there for a 5:30am start. I’ll also workout when I’m there after my shifting so I’m usually shattered by 8:30-9pm lol
If I’m on the closing shift (rare) I’ll get up at around 9, have a slow breakfast then go workout before I start. Fucks my sleep up as I finish at 10:30pm when I’d usually be sound asleep, even by the time I’m home, had a lil snack, showered etc, my mind is still going 100mph after being in such a stimulating environment and interacting so much with people (personal training, teaching classes, hopping behind the front desk etc) so I can’t get to sleep until 2am. I'm pretty strict about going to bed at 23:00 nowadays, only because my two year old will wake me up between 04:30 and 05:30. Currently he's trending the right side of 05:00 which is good. Having to parent yourself to bed is one of the less cool parts of being a parent.
Before that I'd usually go to bed between 23:00 and 00:00 and get up just the other side of 07:30. A regular 7.5 to 8.5 hours was pretty great.

About 2-4am til 9-10am atm. Have let the schedule go a bit in favour of late nights and long workdays in the summer. I need to bring it back to midnight - 8am. I’m a bit of a night owl but I feel like getting to sleep before the days end and actually waking up in a new day just feels kinda right. Plus I’m on that balance where a long lay in still has me up at 10am and an early start at 6am isn’t too much of a push. Just feels balanced

It seems like early birds are not the norm on Reddit. I'm up around 6:30 regardless of the time I went to bed! It's why I appreciate my work Let me have flextime. I can start at 7:30 and finish at 3:30 then you get the whole afternoon off!
If it were a normal 9-5 what are you supposed to do in 2.5 hours, before when you're always stressing about getting to work for 9!

I sleep at 6/7am and wake at 2/3pm.
I am tired of people assuming that waking up and that time means I’m lazy. I’m not. I work more than full time and take care of my house, my pets, my plants, myself, my partner etc. It’s like, what time would you like me to get up? 7? Some days if I’ve had a ‘late night’ that would involve me getting up before I go to sleep, and as talented as I am I cannot bend time. I also cannot go about my life on 4 hours of sleep. 2pm is just fine for me.

So for work I’m up at 2:30, ideally I’d be in bed by 7:30/8:30 but my partner doesn’t finish work until 8 and she can’t drive so I give her a lift so by the time we are back and have eaten it’s usually 10:30 before we get to bed and then it probably takes me about an hour before I can fall asleep so a shitty 3 hours sleep on a work night followed by almost falling asleep on my commute home and a nap in the afternoon.
On my days off if I’m off my medication I sleep in until 12-2 ish, if I’m on my medication I’m forced to take it early so have to set an alarm for 6 to take it and then usually I’ll get an hour and a half of sleep before it wakes me up, so work day or not I’d always be up at 7:30/8 which fucking sucks. I hate it

Soon as puberty hit, I couldn’t get to sleep before 3am. First few lessons at school, I’d be half asleep… Still a night owl. I do night shifts because it messes me up less than getting up at 5am for 6am starts when I can’t get to sleep before 2am (regardless of exhaustion from a previous days shift).
PsychologicalNote612@reddit
Bed between half twelve and half one. Wake when I have to, preferably never before ten, even if I've gone to bed early. If I sleep for less than ten hours for more than a couple of days, it takes me a couple of weeks to recover, and I get cold type symptoms. A very early start or busy day knocks me for days too, no matter how much sleep I've had. I need 11 or 12 hours at least once a week ideally.
I used to be quite happy with four or five hours most nights and a catch up on a weekend, but I couldn't do that now.

I work 12 hour shifts, 4 days, 4 off, 4 nights, 4 off, repeat. 6am start on days, 6pm start on nights.
When on day shift I try to sleep by midnight and wake up at 4am, leave for work at 5am.
When on night shift I go to bed at 9am and wake up at 3pm, leave for work at 5pm.
On days off go to bed between 4am and 6am and wake up at noon, sometimes later.
I am also a night owl, I tell people I am naturally nocturnal, and I am a lot more productive at night than I am in the day, I also sleep much better during the day than during the night.
One of the things I often wonder about is how a lot of things aren't accessible at night, there are a lot of shops/supermarkets and garages that are 24/7, but other things, like getting a haircut, aren't available during the night and whether it would be a viable option to see if there are night owl hairdressers would be up for working through the night rather than through the day.

I done a very short stint, about a year, of Monday to Friday 9 to 5, it was the worst thing ever. I don't find going to sleep earlier helps me wake up earlier (I need a cacophony of alarms to get me up for work), so if I'm not tired then I will just stay up later to make the most of the evening.
Badlydressedgirl@reddit
In bed by 10, usually asleep by 12. I generally get up at 9am, since my shifts start at 11am and it takes me a little while to get to work. Earliest I ever wake up is 8am but that’s probably only once a fortnight. I am not a morning person
Hyperion2023@reddit
A mildly dysfunctional 11.30-12pm bedtime, knowing full well I’ll be up between 5am and 6am. 6.30am if I’m lucky, once a week or so. So the best case scenario is usually less than 7hr, typical is 6hr. I’ve usually forgotten how tired I am by the afternoon and just barrel on regardless. I feel fairly energetic day to day, but I know it’s shite for my skin and it’ll catch up on me
marthamagic@reddit
Go up to bed around 10pm, usually fall asleep by 11pm, wake up at 6:15am.
Weekends I usually go to bed at midnight and wake up around 9/10am.
School holidays I revert to my natural pattern of 1/2am bedtime waking up at 9/10am
Itchy3lf@reddit
Get up between 5.30 and 6.30, 7.30 at weekends. Bed, between 11.30 and 12.30. I would like to go to bed earlier but I enjoy the peace of the night.

Try and be in bed by midnight, wake up at about 8, I struggle to fall asleep straight away though, my best method is listening to a podcast or some other speaking only thing at the limit of hearing.

I fully wfm. Go to bed at 10 pm and sleep between 10.30 to 10.45 pm and wake up at 7 to 7.30 pm. Start work at 10 am. I'm a morning person and like to have things done and plan for the day at a slow pace.

I'd love to go to bed around midnight and wake up at 8. That window between about 10 and 12 once everyone has gone to bed is just glorious, calm, restorative time to experience
Unfortunately kiddo doesn't sleep in much past 6, so... I'm just tired instead
HankHippopopolous@reddit
I’m a night owl but start work at 8 so I normally go to bed between 11 and 12 and wake up at 7. Fortunately my commute is only a 10 minute drive so I leave at 7:50.
Weekends aren’t long enough but if I have a few days off and don’t have to be up early I quickly revert to my natural state of being up into the wee hours of the morning and waking up very late. These times happen rarely but it’s still enough to shock me that I haven’t grown out of it like I thought I would when I was a teenager with this pattern. I’m now in my 30s and it’s only responsibilities that stop it and not me actually changing at all.

WFH days bed at 12:30 up at 8:45, in the office days bed at 11:30 up at 6:30. Weekend mark been at like 3am and up like 11:00 lol which feels natural to me, I absolutely hate waking early for work 😭

When I worked in London years ago same bedtime but up at 5 everyday.

I'm pretty much the same, bed at 11ish, sleep at maybe 1 ish. Then up at 8.45 for work.
Tho I feel like I'm a slow starter and get into my groove from lunch time onwards.
BoopingBurrito@reddit
My absolute ideal would be a gradually rotating schedule of 10 hours of sleep, 16 hours of being awake. Its what I always gravitated towards during uni, especially on the holidays. That just seems to be my nature (very weird and unhelpful) cycle.
My more realistic perfect schedule would be bed at about 1am, get up about 11am.
My real world, I have a job and don't get that much of a choice schedule is bed around 11, get up at around 8.30.

I don’t understand how people on this thread who survive on 4-5 hours sleep long term aren’t dead. A couple of nights like that for me and I’m having near misses driving the car (amongst other stupid shit)
Karazhan@reddit
Fall asleep at 11, wake up at 7. Weekdays and weekends. I went through a bad time years ago with mental health and anxiety, my doc told me to keep track of my sleep and I was gaming until 2am then getting up at 7am for work. So I had to teach myself to sleep properly. Took lots of routine and lavender spray but I got there and now I just naturally fall asleep early.

10pm, read for a bit in bed then up at 6am. I leave for work at 7am, handover from the night shift is at 8.15 so I make good time getting in even if the traffic is bad. 10pm gives me about 7-8 hours sleep so I'm sharp(-ish) even on a Monday.

Usually around 1:30am alarm at 7:05am effectively. Have never slept well ever so I'll take 5 to 6 hours coma level sleep as things give out. Occasionally at weekends it let's me have 7 to 8 but broadly I'm a 5 to 6 person.

Go to bed about 6/6:30am and wake up around 12pm. I work permanent nights. On the weekend I try and get up earlier on a Saturday so i can do things with the family. Sometimes get up earlier on a Monday too and take my boy to school. If I have a couple of weeks off work I’m still in bed about 2am and up about 10am. I never have a nap. I think I’m going to die younger than necessary in all honesty.

I am not a morning person. I am, by nature, a night owl but have unwillingly accepted that my insomnia is eased by a very strict bedtime. I am now a cranky not-morning-person whose body has decided it thinks a lie in is until 8/8.30am and resents this massively.
