Isn't it also true that the Serbian "love affair" with Russia is one sided? From what I understand the Russians don't have the concept of some special connection, the orthodox slavic brotherhood or some such nonsense related to the Serbs at all. In fact most of them either don't care or literally don't know a thing about Serbia. They're barely aware that Serbia exists.

In any case, an interesting observation by you and there's probably truth in it. Still, a lot of it probably has to do with what other Serbs have been mentioning here, namely the fact that those Russians who arrived to Serbia, are those who could afford it, i.e. well off, snobby ones. The fact is: most Russians definitely cannot afford to completely uproot their lives.

In Croatia we have lots of Ukrainians and the situation is very different. Opposite even. Regardless of the fact that they're also east Slavs. They're actually very similar to us temperamentally and are almost craving connection with non-Ukrainians. They regularly find jobs - basically all of them are working, making an effort to learn the language, seem humble...etc. I'm also generalizing, but this seems to be the trend. Don't know what that's about, but I should mention that the vast majority of them are women, often with kids. They are likely more traumatized than those Russians are too. Something like that surely plays an important role in how one's gonna behave.

Well historically Russia has fed the same narrative in its political relations with Serbia and has both financed and politically/militarily supported Serbs independence movements from the Turks and Austrians. However, the Serbian people ascribe this to all Russian people, rather than viewing these instances as a calculated act from a political entity.

Also, keep in mind that a lot of this admiration for russia isn’t because of the specificities of who Russians are or what Russia actually behaves like. It’s because Serbia is a small country, and like all small countries, it doesn’t hold much weight globally and doesn’t have the luxury of working in its own interests to the same extent that great powers do. That’s why the idea of Russia is “romantic”, because it is currently the only Slavic country that is powerful enough to pursue its own independent foreign policy. It’s a shame they use this freedom to kill people and spread autocracy, but that’s a different conversation entirely.

I’m sure what you are experiencing with the Ukrainians is anecdotal. It’s just simply a matter of fact that they are also East Slavs and culturally similar to Russians. I find the same anachronistic tendencies in both. I think that the Ukrainians in Croatia and the Russians in Serbia are not good examples of the “typical” Russian or Ukrainian. A lot of the Russians that came to Serbia are very liberal, urban, and western. They have even opened some LGBT friendly venues, which is something that most Serbs and Croats aren’t even doing. I find them cold but also much more modern and forward thinking than even most of the Belgraders.

Well I could equally tell you that your experiences with Russians are anecdotal, right? It can even be seen empirically by comparing your experiences to the experiences of many other Serbians that have commented here. I however see some truth in both your experiences and the experiences of those other people. It depends on what specific Russians you and your circle of friends have had experiences with. And that's perfectly fine. I don't really like to essentialize people anyway. What even is a typical Russian? Regardless, even if we are generalizing I don't really disagree with what you're saying. In fact I do think that Russians and Ukrainians are more similar to each other than they are to us. A little bit tho. What I meant to say was that I don't see any significant difference between Ukrainians in Croatia and Croats. But then again I don't see the difference between Poles, Czechs, Slovaks on one side, and us on the other, either. Call it anecdotal if you will, but I actually find a lot of similarities between us. Even more so if we're talking about western Slavs, and this goes both in terms of positive as well as negative similarities.

I get that, but that's not it, at least for the majority. I am not expecting for them to go around and integrate and become 100% same as us, but the ones I have on my mind have a rather snobbish attitude, same feel you get from a rich guys kid who looks at you as a lower class.

Interesting topic… first, you need to be aware of the type of people who moved (mostly introverted IT people). Second, really depends what you compare them to: would they be closer to let’s say Brits or Germans? Definitely they will. Comparing to other Balkan countries makes 0 sense. 3rd - it’s a large country where historically people have been migrating and the culture that was dominating others, a very isolated culture, so now it must be tough for them to be adapting to another one. 4th - yes people are a bit arrogant but that’s an inferiority complex, due to point number 3

Reasons why:

They brought NIS (largest oil production in Serbia) for a very cheap price by corrupting Serbian politicians.
They took natural gas reserves of Serbia for almost a few dollars.
They keep their own people on board of directors in many government corporations.
They help the sky-rocket real estate prices (mostly explained by other comments but not the only reason!)
They are oil poisoning environments around cities like Zrenjanin where they use oil production processes the way they want (using the situation where Serbia has no eco standards like the EU)
Their secret services still provoke conflicts between Serbs and Albanians to keep the region unstable and always ready for the next potential war.
They lied years and decades after the 1999 war on Kosovo that they will make strong Russian military support to Serbs living there. Always failing them.

That's harsh, I wouldn't phrase it like that. For one, I feel for these Russians and hate the fact that the EU isn't actively working to let them all take refuge from the war. It's cool that Serbia is, now, that said they are kind of snobby and they are fucking the price of rent. Culturally, idk, they're not automatically integrating but if many of them do end up staying I don't think it's a gap that can't be bridged. And also I did have very little experience with Russians and imagined them more like Romanians or Hungarians on average, whereas these people seem Scandiavian-ish and thus have less in common with us, if that makes sense.

What the average Z nationalist thinks, I think it's fair to say they're ignoring the issue.

Why would I dislike them?

Most of them are well-behavioured people, normal and quite. Yes, they're closed as community for Balkan standard, but that doesn't hurt anyone. In these two and half years I've never seen them making any problems. On my previous job I worked with them a lot and numerous times they were much easier to work with. People would have think that we want stereotypical 24/7 drunk and loud Russians cuz they're probably "warmer".

Since they came here they opened shit tons of various businesses as IT companies, restaurants, coffee bars, small shops, all kind of service... they're paying taxes and spending their money here. I don't see anything bad here. People criticizes them for not learning a language. I don't know where these type of stories comes from, but while I was working I noticed that almost everyone know at least some basic of Serbian. Most of them understand Serbian and good piece of them know Serbian enough to have some short conversations. Could they put more effort in learning language. Probably, but it's really unfair to criticize them for something that is just not true.

Rents indeed went up. It's capital, it's also country where only possibly asset to invest money are apartments and houses. City center and other good locations are nowhere in world cheap. Belgrade is big enough that everyone can find something that is suitable with their pocket. Also it's not written that everyone have to live in capital city. I know examples where people came from smaller city just to work some shit job here in Belgrade and spent 50% of their salary on rent. Instead of staying in their own town or finding some other, where salary would be maybe 10% lesser but it would be much easier to find better and bigger apartment for less money.

Russians were numerous in Belgrade in 2022. Most of them returned to Russia or move to another country. Serbia has nothing to offer.

I think the mistake that Serbs are making is equating the Russians that came to Serbia with the average Russian. The Russians in Belgrade and Novi Sad are mostly young and (relatively) wealthy from big cities who have somewhat of a snobbish/pretentious attitude. This combined with how much they fucked up the real estate has resulted in some animosity.
