I 'member thinking Aiwa was a really fancy brand. Never had one :-(
6ring@reddit
Bet Ive thrown out 3 of those over the years.
dudeshoes44@reddit
This was my alarm for like 6-7 years. Blew my mind that I could set an alarm and pick the track I wanted it to play.
Absolutely loved this.
fullautophx@reddit
Yep, my brother had one and would blast the Lion King soundtrack for the alarm. Every single morning “NANTS INGONYAMA BAGITHI BABA”.
-DementedAvenger-@reddit
Thank you for spelling those lyrics right! Too many NAAA SABINYAAAs everywhere.
fullautophx@reddit
I used to think it was “Kniiiiiiights of Kenya…”
Infamous-Relative-24@reddit
Nine times out of 10 the shuffling of the disk woke me up before the song did 🤣
dudeshoes44@reddit
100%. I can actually still hear the spinning now. Haha.
-DementedAvenger-@reddit
I had one very similar (yes aiwa) and I used it to record songs from the radio onto mixtapes. Fucking loved doing that!
Had to press record before the song started playing, and then stop it if it was a song I didn’t want, rewind, and do it again hoping for a good one!
Stripes-McGillicuddy@reddit
Omggggggg!
OrganicAverage1@reddit
I had that same one
epicnding@reddit
Wow, I definitely had this exact model. Was so cool back in the day.
Living_Pie205@reddit
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
HorrorHorse4990@reddit
I still have this stereo. I have the model with the turntable or record player.
Ordinary_Aioli_7602@reddit
I never had one of those fancy glowing ones
paulconuk@reddit
Loved Aiwa stuff in the 90’s, they made ‘Walkmans’ as good if not better than Sony.
PhilosopherDismal191@reddit
Volume to the max
Luckypenny4683@reddit
I got rid of mine when the CD player stopped working, but let me tell you what, I adored that stereo
VacationLizLemon@reddit
I bought this stereo with my high school graduation money. My upstairs neighbors (during college) stole it. They were arrested but it was never returned (although everything else was).
BrutalBart@reddit
BASS BOOOOOOST
Cautious-String7076@reddit
Aiwa had the coolest stereos. Autoreverse tape decks. The remote volume control actually turned the volume knob. Cool colors. It’s not audiophile gear by a long shot but as a 13 year old I thought my cousin’s stereo was elite.
Dr-McLuvin@reddit
Ha it was audiophile to my 13 year old ears.
aureliusky@reddit
I blew my speakers so they flubbed when music played, had to switch to NIN so the distortion sounded like it could be part of the song. 😂
errornosignal@reddit
Head Like a Hole always sounded so good on my old Aiwa
tremblane@reddit
IIRC, there were green light segments around the volume knob that would light in sequence to make it look like it was turning with the knob. When you used the remote, the lights did the same to give the effect the knob was turning.
hotdogaholic@reddit
there were like a billion versions of the same deck but with slight modifications. they were like vegas slot machines! some had physically moving parts, others didnt. it was the wild wild west. car stereos head units were bonkers during that era too. motorized, etc.
OldJames47@reddit
Mine didn’t have lights, just an indicator notch. It physically moved when using the remote.
AlchemistMustang@reddit
Aiwa also made the absolute best portable CD players.
bikemandan@reddit
I had this 2002 Kenwood https://www.ebay.com/itm/186660476603 (Goodwill wants $290 !)
itsmestanard@reddit
Nice! I've got a slightly older one, had it since 99 and it still goes hard! (not my pic)
EchoFrost46@reddit
I had the one with a turntable and 3 disc changer
ChillWaveSurfer@reddit
My wife put mine on the curb for our local ‘junk day’ and I miss it. I hope someone is enjoying it right now.
PartyFactor583@reddit
I had the same one…My old roomie still has it! Great memories w/that thing…
NYCWriterOfAllThings@reddit
This low key had karaoke mode right?
mrrapacz@reddit
My aiwa was the first time I heard music from decent speakers even if they weren’t audiophile quality. They were way better than whatever was in our minivan or corsica. It was kinda profound. It was like getting glasses for the first time and I could see leaves on trees. I had no idea music could sound like that.
ajhe51@reddit
I had a very similar one but black. Brings back memories of dad yelling at me for playing Cypress Hill too loud.
AngelHeart-@reddit
I have the same one. I still have it. Works as it always has.
This_Cruel_Joke@reddit
My best friend found the perfect shitty 12s those 100 watts could be heard a few houses down. Spend a few hours on limewire then head to his house
taez555@reddit
I still use mine as a receiver for my record player. The tape decks and CD player stopped working more than a decade ago. Still sounds great though. :-)
Servilefunctions218@reddit
Does anyone remember the class action lawsuit for these back in 2002? I got over a hundred bucks for a faulty cd changer. Thanks Gramp for telling me to send in the warranty registration!
NotoriousNRO@reddit
This brought back some memories
WeirdObligation1002@reddit
I had a similar one to this and loved it
North-Director8717@reddit
Wow this brings back memories
Dr-Stocktopus@reddit
Oh man, had this same unit.
Instant flashback.
Genomac71@reddit
Aiwa stereo system!? That's why this sub is the best
Food_Library333@reddit
I think I had the same stereo. Thing cranked!
SuchMatter1884@reddit
Man just seeing this pic gives me a dopamine hit
DarkwingDuckHunt@reddit
I wanna listen to the radio all night to make a mix tape
TalkingBBQ@reddit
Just had a flashback to younger me wishing I could record Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden but always getting a bit of the commercial or the DJ started talking too early
SoupySailsAway@reddit
Still have mine and about 30 cassette tapes. Got it as a birthday present when I was 13, I’m 42 now.
FidgitForgotHisL-P@reddit
Mine works great for cds, but I’ve lost a speaker! Which shouldn’t be something you can misplace but here we are, absolutely o idea where one speaker is.
The house I bought had speakers built into the ceiling in the lounge, I’ve tried it with those plugged in the bass ports, didn’t sound great but it was a neat feeling having all that extra base popping down from the ceiling on me lol.
xadz1981x@reddit
I put a pair of Jamo 266 speakers on mine lasted about a year the first big bass line on Faithless god is a DJ killed it 🤣
pee_nut_ninja@reddit
With genuine love:
r/blackplasticcrap
Unable-Head-1232@reddit
I did not realize how common these were.
ResistanceRebel@reddit
Mine played 5 CD's. I thought that was so cool.
pzemmet@reddit
Teenage me was so jealous of anyone who had an Aiwa back in the day
tersegirl@reddit
Held onto mine for so long, planning to somehow fix the laser for CD#2. Finally let kiddo dismantle it for fun:/
holesofdoubt@reddit
Wish i still has mine. Gave it to my stupid ass brother.
RetroSchat@reddit
I spent my entire first college job paycheck on this my sophomore year. We got so many sound violations that year from the cops lol. The apartment I was in did not let us renew our lease. Still one of my favorite purchases memories.
innercosmicexplorer@reddit
Those orange a green lights are iconic.
brokedownbusted@reddit
Lol i still use mine, blasting it yesterday, a slightly earlier model I think. All about that T-bass
CD's stopped playing over a decade ago, one of the tape decks is busted but it still sounds great I use a bluetooth aux adapter these days.
RetroSchat@reddit
lol same. Mine from college lives on the patio deck. Cd changer is busted, tape deck busted but it still thumps for pool parties lol. I have it hooked up to a Bluetooth aux as well and/or with a 3.5 mm adapter for the Alexa out there.
Negative-Wrap95@reddit
I use a JSAUX USB to 3.5mm adapter with fast charging going to a 3.5mm to RCA into the Aux input on mine. It lives in the garage right now and having the phone out of my pocket when I'm working there is a good thing.
brokedownbusted@reddit
yeah similar setup with rca cable going in, also hook up a record player from time to time; even played a guitar through it a couple times, I'm lucky the speakers survived the feedback
innercosmicexplorer@reddit
I gad a 7 disc changer
therealpopkiller@reddit
I still have mine. I can’t bear to get rid of it even though I don’t use it
wanna_be_green8@reddit
Just sold ours when we moved across country in 2021. Thought "I'll just pick up another at a thrift or yard sale." It's been three years and I've yet to come across one... Shouldn't have let her go so easily.
Cashewkaas@reddit
I think I had this exact set!
jasonhackwith@reddit
* Ours is still going after all these years!
Netipoo@reddit
Use it almost every day.. since 1998
SendInYourSkeleton@reddit
I worked at Best Buy from 1995-2002 and recommended these all the time. Great sound, superior price.
If you bought one from me, you're welcome.
beland-photomedia@reddit
That’s the one I had 😂
Consistent-Soil-1818@reddit
I swear I had the same model. It definitely made me one of the cool kids in the early 2000s. My mom donated it last year, still fully functioning
SweetJesusLady@reddit
I ate acid in high school and enjoyed flashbacks during the night for months looking at lights shoot from the display.
Mine was black. I got it for Christmas in approximately 1995. But I pushed the nipple part of the speaker inside when I was doing drugs. Good times.
Kern4lMustard@reddit
I loved playing the slot machine game on mine. I think I still have it
pissjugman@reddit
Had 3 or so of these aiwa cd changers and the cd changer always failed
Acceptable_Result488@reddit
I left mine behind in a move. I had it as a basement system for years . Looked good but the cd player was always janky, the tape deck warped, decent cool looking radio.
OriginalBad@reddit
Loved my AIWA. Blasted music out of it for 5 years.
JJHall_ID@reddit
I miss Aiwa. It wasn’t top of the line, but it sounded amazing for the price. I had a very similar model to the one pictured and it lasted me probably 15 years of daily use both for mosaic and for watching movies and even with playing computer games. I wish it didn’t die on me, I’d still be using it today I’m sure.
riotstopper@reddit
My speaker fell and hit me in the head once.
FirehawkLS1@reddit
I remember my first AIWA home stereo, also had my first car CD player of that brand. The cd lasers crapped the bed and were pretty unreliable in my experience.
Flux_My_Capacitor@reddit
I picked up a similar Aiwa at a church rummage sale last year for $20 and it has 4 speakers.
I do laugh at the subs that worship Sonys and ignore the time when Aiwa was supreme. I also have an Aiwa cassette boom box and it’s my favorite.
chigga21@reddit

7DollarsOfHoobastanq@reddit
I had a similar unit from another brand and when I took it to college we had it hooked to our TV. I still remember my roommate commenting: “wow, I never realized this Pillsbury commercial has such a hard bass track…”. That thing thumped like crazy.
BundleOfJoysticks@reddit
Holy shit I had that exact same one <3 until the CD deck belt broke :(
NachoNachoDan@reddit
The EQ visualizations on that screen were the fucking coolest shit going at the time
HotgunColdheart@reddit
Fell asleep to those things dancing so many times.
GarnerPerson@reddit
This was the white noise machine before there were white noise machines.
petit_cochon@reddit
Oh that brings back memories.
look_ima_frog@reddit
I felt so cool when I got mine. I LOVED the weirdo 3-disc carousel and how it had that eccentric orbit so it would fit all three in the narrow space of the top. I especially loved the rainbow light that shined down on top of the disc while it was playing.
Having the T-bass AND BBE (trebel) made me feel like a boss. Especially loved that the power button and the volume was at the bottom of the remote where your thumb would naturally go. Like, why the hell didn't anyone else think of that? Even still, nobody does it like that.
Mine slowly died over many years of use. My mom still has one in her basement that works perfectly fine.
I bought an Aiwa bluetooth speaker recently for the name alone. It's ok, but those shelf systems were a very special treat.
HotgunColdheart@reddit
I forgot how perfect the remote was!
dontletyourcrownslip@reddit
Agreed! I loved mine!!
night-swimming704@reddit
I used to have the volume off and try to guess the song based on the beat and frequencies of the EQ. Don’t think I ever got one right.
GarnerPerson@reddit
OMFG I’ve barely followed this subreddit but this was such a major part of my life. It was all R&B for me. But I went to bed most nights watching the CDs shuffle.
suavaleesko@reddit
Dosia - who got the bomb. I swear it had to have been mastered on one of these
Starbreiz@reddit
I saved up all my babysitting money for one of these from Circuit City. The dual cassette and cd meant I could make hella mix tapes. It's still in my parents basement!
crewchiefguy@reddit
I had a technics because I couldn’t afford the aiwa. It was not as cool.
APlayer2BeNamedLater@reddit
I have this exact same one! But the CD player is scratchy now and one of the tape decks won’t shut.
Kooky_Donkey_166@reddit
Were you Bass Boosting that puppy!?
Trauma-Dolll@reddit
I remember having one that had a built in cd burner in it with a three disc changer. Shit was banger.
reverends3rvo@reddit
I miss when electronics had personality. Lol
the_cats_pajamas12@reddit
I lost mine in 2010, sad story!
MaxAmperage@reddit
Hooked mine up to the tv in my bedroom. Good sound system all around!
micholob@reddit
Still have mine but the one of the channels quit years ago so it's mono now. Good enough for the garage though.
Over-Geologist-581@reddit
I just redecorated a couple of weeks ago and decided to get rid of my stereo. It's not the exact model, but close (the manufactured date on the back is February 1998). If anyone lives in the DC area, I'll give it to them for free.
kitisimilikiti@reddit
Just how on earth we have the same model 😂
Head_Introduction_89@reddit
I had one of these. The dial on the left played different drum beats.
YourMidwestMama@reddit
I still have mine. It lives in the garage and I blast it when I do woodworking. Still love that system.
Happycat5300@reddit
Mine had a little drawer for the remote control. It's where I kept my weed and pipe in HS.
tjdux@reddit
That reminds me of the hidden compartment on the back of PS2s.
"You can put ur weed in dare"
pinkocatgirl@reddit

omg nostalgia!! Absolutely bought the hard drive for this reason.

I bought it because you could copy games onto it lol
Eeeeeeeeehwhatsup@reddit
Woooow one of my sisters had this. Was so jealous bc it was so cool.
Revolutionary_Lab203@reddit
Oh man. I forgot this existed. So many memories just popped into my head!
gjcij2203@reddit
Had a Phillips just like this. To this day, it was the best stereo I have ever had! Lasted 20 years of almost everyday use. Great sound quality, and the bass was amazing.
jws926@reddit
I remember my dad taking me to Circuit City in the 90s and getting me my Aiwa stereo , I was so happy that day, I loved it, had till well into the '10s , it was only useful for the radio on using the AUX input.
KittenaSmittena@reddit
Had this exact one! Man… what a blast from the past!
GandalfsSexyNuts@reddit
Awwww I had if not the exact same model or a generation before it (Y2K baby). I loved rocking out to all my fav boy bands pop2k songs. Thanks for the nostalgia!!

Mine has surround sound features. Hooked it up to my TV. Was amazing
batsofburden@reddit
so many good memories.
ChrisCooper2022@reddit
have had mine since 99, stoll works
VibrantViolet@reddit
I used mine as my alarm clock, it would shuffle the cd’s and start playing. One of those cd’s was always Silverchair “Neon Ballroom”, so through most of high school there was a 1/3 chance I’d be woken up to “Emotion Sickness”.
I don’t think I’ve listened to that song since high school, because now I associate it with being an alarm.
WarmasterCain55@reddit
I had something similar. Loved using it.
Soatch@reddit
I had a Panasonic 5 CD changer and cassette deck. The thing lasted 15 years and was still kicking when I just decided to leave it in the basement of a place I rented when I moved. I had a newer Sony stereo at that point.
iamapeahen@reddit
My graduation present. 😭
Sharessa84@reddit
I had a Sony system that was extremely similar to this. I got it in 98, and it only really crapped out on me around 2015. I still kind of miss it. I used it as computer speakers for over a decade.
BUNNIES_ARE_FOOD@reddit
Had an Aiwa system with surround speakers. Fuck I loved that thing. Lasted 4 years of college. Had an alarm clock feature too. Woke up to Pantera for a long time.
bflatwasmyname@reddit
Wish I still had mine
northernking8@reddit
I hid my weed in the cassette slot
nalliesmommie@reddit
Aiwa had great sound but mine always ended up having issues. I had to sent it in 3 or 4 times to be fixed.
My dad still has this down in his barn/workshop. Still sounds good.

I still have mine. But only the radio works lol
Sad_Regular_3365@reddit
I still have my Sony Boombox that I got from Christmas of 1999. It's a great radio, but the remote doesn't work any more. I will never forget listening to WWL 870 out of New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina.
Mobile_Aioli_6252@reddit
Is this the model that had the "slot machine" game incorporated into the LED display?
lemonylol@reddit
My friend's family had this specific one. We used to play this weird slot machine game on the equalizer lol
martin519@reddit
My JVC MX-G56 from 2001 is still going strong.
PuzzleheadedFee7184@reddit
That thing was so loud. There is literauly nothing like it for the price now.
NYK-94@reddit
I had a similar stereo. When my last older sister moved out of the house when I was like 12, she left her turntable and a great vinyl collection (New Order, 1980s/early 1990s punk, Pet Shop Boys, and classics by Elton John, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, and such. I hooked up all of it. I was given headphones for my next birthday because my dad hated the punk stuff.
grizuna3795@reddit
Oh wow, my parents had exact same one. We threw it out several years ago even though it was working just fine.
QueenTrashPanda816@reddit
Oh man....I loved that thing!
Junke00@reddit
I was still using the speakers of mine up until 4 weeks ago. Still work just fine but wife wanted wireless bluetooth soundbar. I like my cords, adapters and receivers. 😪
postinganxiety@reddit
Oh my fucking god. I never knew what people meant on this sub when they said “unlocked a memory”…. now I get it. That thing was my lifeline.
sneeria@reddit
Mine too, I didn't have it plugged into a surge protector D: RIP
skippytannenbaum@reddit
I still have mine. Bought a Bluetooth receiver for it and going strong!
Chronic_Overthink3r@reddit
I used to sell those at Circuit City. Those had awesome markup. I would demo it with my Macarena CD (everyone loathed it). Typically they would say “I’ll buy it if you do the Macarena”. Then I would close the deal with the service plan. Oh yeah!
pjdraper@reddit
I won this exact thing from a raffle at our grocery store. I was so excited!!
Devilimportluvr@reddit
Hey I had that one. It was a piece of shit after about a yr

DarkwingDuckHunt@reddit
OMFG!!!!
where's the 2 matching shitty speakers ?
Erasemenu@reddit
I never realized how ubiquitous this radio was until this sub lol
I cannibalized mine, built the electronics and speakers into a Jansport backpack powered by rc car batteries and a power supply I made. While I enjoyed a stereo that carried text books, most of the high school staff did not lol it was a great radio
dumpstersquirrel19@reddit
Omg! I miss mine! Sat on my skateboard I got for Christmas and never used. Had a Check Your Head sticker on it. 😎

I have seen so many variations of the silver Aiwa stereo, but I still have never seen the exact one I had. My wife had one and there is one at my work, none are the same.
SoFlaBarbie@reddit
Got one in high school, took it to college with me, it moved to TN after college then onto three different cities in FL over the course of an additional 18 years. Pretty incredible stereo.
jessejamesvan111@reddit
That thing was the greatest! I got it for Christmas and was on top of the world.
palmerisademon@reddit
Oh fuck yeah, this is taking me back. Had a built in clock with alarm function, allowing you to wake up to music of your choosing, unlike the plebs with a clock/radio alarm. Only problem was all my CDs were punk and metal so I'd just be scared awake every single day before school.
justsumguy@reddit
My part have and still use this in their living room. The display is starting to give out though.
silentsinner-@reddit
I left mine with my parents when I moved out. They have had it on their front porch for the past 20+ years and it is just starting to fail. When I visit them for Christmas this year I am going to have to find a model number so I can buy another one for them on ebay.
GratefulSteveNFA@reddit
Wow
gaiusjozka@reddit
Mine was stolen from my room in the co-op I lived in in college, probably around 2000. The couple that stole it went on to get arrested robbing a convenience store and spent some time in jail.
I'm still mad. Loved that stereo.
Shen1076@reddit
I still have one
LMurch13@reddit
I had a Magnavox D8300 with dual cassette, yellow and black. I loved that thing. I don't know if they all did this, but while playing a tape, you could apply pressure to the FF button and speed ahead a bit, release and keep playing. Just skip ahead 20 seconds. I wish I still had it (though who knows if it would be useful these days. I don't have any tapes.)

That one there would have been one of the mac daddy units. 80 watts per channel. I had one that I thought was 5 disc but might have been a 3 disc, they look a lot more common, and I think it was 20 wpc, but looked nearly identical to that one.

warpathatwork@reddit
I'm literally using mine at this exact moment. It has a few tricks to using it now, but it is still going strong. They were a different kind of radio then. Damn i sound old.
fireforge1979@reddit
Still have mine in the garage, the cd tray won't close, but it works good on am/fm!

I had a similar Aiwa one. I used it from 1998-2014 when it finally died from wear and tear. The speakers had some crazy bass for their size. I remember my neighbors screaming at me through their window that was right across from my bedroom 😅 Good times.

This takes me back to every dorm room I both lived in and visited. Somehow both cool and not too expensive iirc

3 CD carousel?
Pretty sure it's had this same one in black :)

Mine still works, It has the powered subwoofer and I use it for my computer sound system; and still sounds awesome.

I remember getting one like this for my college dorm room. I made sure to get one with a shitty record player on the top. That thing made Crosleys look like audiophile gear.
I eventually got a better record player. But the stereo unit with tape decks lasted forever.
RoyalZeal@reddit
Mine died on me around '01, just an all around good piece of equipment.
Notchersfireroad@reddit
I still have this exact one. Had an even better Aiwa but after one of my many cross country moves it just wouldn't power up one time.
LeperFriend@reddit
I left mine in my last apartment by mistake
1DrinkAnd1KnowThings@reddit
I definitely had one of these.
WhatDoYouWantorNeed@reddit
I loved mine! It was an aiwa too.

My wife still has this

I totally forgot I owned one of these until now

Used to RUN home to get that afternoon DJ show on this bad boy. Some of the best times dancing in my room

I had this for my college dorm. The center console is long gone (can’t remember when or how it met its demise), but the speakers are still going almost 30 years later as the main R/L in my home theater.
Bird_Herder@reddit
I spent my first paycheck on an Aiwa stereo.
ChaucersDuchess@reddit
I had the same one!! Man I miss having my little stereo systems - my parents had the late 70’s floor units in a glass cabinet - but I am getting the same sound from my Echos of all things 😂
poofandmook@reddit
I had ALMOST that exact one. my dial on the left and the middle part was slightly different but everything else looks basically the same. The last time my dad came to visit me he surprised me and brought it with him. It was perfect except the volume didn't work and the remote was done for. I was somehow able to order a replacement remote and it works great!
mrseand@reddit
I had this exact stereo and I loved it!
Maanzacorian@reddit
I still say these are aesthetically relevant. I love the look of a shelf system like this, or a rack system with huge speakers.

Basically a gateway drug for my 14 year old ass
HermaeusMajora@reddit
I believe I had this exact model or one close to it. I purchased it on Hifi.com in like 97. It only lasted until maybe 2008 or 2009.

Aiwa…I hear ya….aiwa Aiwa…I hear ya 🎶
