American Xers: What was your favorite Canadian thing growing up?

I never missed an episode of You Can’t Do That on Television and Kids in the Hall. Dug me some Rush and Alanis Morisette. One of my favorite absurdist comedies is the Mackenzie brothers Strange Brew. What did I miss?

Red green show
RoninRobot@reddit (OP)
Is Red Green Canadian? I always thought it was Minnesotan but I guess they left it vague for a reason.
FatGuyOnAMoped@reddit
Minnesotan here. Red Green is definitely Canadian. However, a lot of Minnesotans (especially those from Up North) have very strong Canadian tendencies.
MaudeFindlay72-78@reddit
Minnesotans are probably more Canadian than us British Columbians.
FatGuyOnAMoped@reddit
Well, Minneapolis/St Paul is actually farther north than Toronto, the weather is brutal 3 months a year, and kids learn how to ice skate at soon as they can stand. Unfortunately we don't have Tim Horton's and can't get decent poutine anywhere.
MaudeFindlay72-78@reddit
Not having a Tim's is a blessing. Just trust me on this.
Perenially_behind@reddit
My Canadian relatives agree with you. They are always appalled when I make a point of finding a Tim's whenever we venture into the Great White North for a visit. Which is why I do it of course.
RoninRobot@reddit (OP)
I think what gave it away is the nerd character guy. Sure, he’s nerdy but in a non-American uncanny valley sort of way. Imitating an American nerd stereotype but not getting it.

PS: Happy Thanksgiving, Canadian friends!

Degrassi is GenX? Never watched it
evilJaze@reddit
Are you thinking of the Degrassi: the Next Generation? That was for the millenials. The original Degrassi in all its incarnations was very much for us. I was the same age and in the same grade as all the kids so it resonates especially for me.
bcpirate@reddit
What year were you born?
OccamsYoyo@reddit
Same here! I graduated the same year as the Degrassi kids. Man was that movie-length finale ever depressing — it was like the “Goodbye, Farewell and Amen” of teen shows.
evilJaze@reddit
Right? It was the "goodbye to care-free high school life and hello to punishing university curriculum". I had a blast that summer. The last summer I felt truly free.

Living outside of Detroit, crossing the border and visiting Canada was always an amazing time. The beach at Grand bend, Camping at the Pinery, seeing Shakespeare in Stratford, dim sum in Windsor and going to Wheels inn in Chatham was a great experience growing up.
EvilDan69@reddit
I live 30 minutes away from all that. Still love it.
Sinfourah@reddit
+1 the border. I didn't expect everything to be entertainment lists in this post, but I guess crossing the border is technically entertainment!
gt0163c@reddit
I grew up outside of Detroit as well. I have lot of fun memories of going out to Canada. My junior high did a field trip to the science center in Toronto in 7th grade. My church youth group would go to Windsor for Five Pin Bowling an pizza (Mama's?) a couple of times a year. And in elementary school I remember my family going to Windsor for an afternoon to fill up our Ford Econoline van (with dual tanks!) when gas was significantly cheaper there. We'd get ice cream or walk along the waterfront or find a fun park to play in.
countess-petofi@reddit
When I was growing up, you didn't even have to show ID to cross the border. We had out high school senior trip at Canada's Wonderland, and our summer theater class went to Stratford and Shaw Festivals every year.

Loved all the people, but the show just had a weird early video look to it I couldn’t get comfortable with. Music-wise, loved Dig by I Mother Earth. Our Lady Peace had that one good song, Starseed. Ashley Macissac’s record, Hi, How Are You? is still a phenomenal listen. Not a sports fan, so I don’t care about the Leafs or the Expos or when Gretzky came to LA. Rush…sure. They are Irish, but they emigrated to Canada and formed the band in Toronto. That's all TV shows, but we lived on the border, the border was open, and I had extended family there, so simply going to Canada was a favorite thing. Back then, Sarnia had the local mall and the good restaurants and the cheap gasoline and the store where they sold Commodore stuff. They had the best doughnut shops before Timmys came in and Walmarted the local shops. Mothers Pizza was a special treat, but Swiss Chalet was a nice alternative to, well, any fast food on our side.

For some stupid reason it was illegal at the time (1980s) to bring it across the border. So he smuggled it into the US using the ruse that he didn’t say anything and they didn’t ask. My brother and I thought he was practically James Bond!

If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. Duct tape. The handyman's secret weapon.
I attended one of the last taping so the show (they were always taped live before a studio audience) in the early 2000s in Hamilton. It was great. They had a Maple Leaf Flag made of red and white duct tape. There was a busload of Americans from Ohio, in the audience. Steve Smith (Red Green) took questions from the audience.
American from Ohio: "Red, what do you mean by 'Keep Your Stick On The Ice'"
Red: "It's a Canadian thing. I'll let you figure it out."
<>
American from Ohio: "Red, where is Possum Lodge?"
Red: "Well, Harold and I got in the car and measured it. It is 250 beer stores north of Toronto"
He never went out of character the whole evening.

Since we lived close enough to go there frequently, my favorite thing was Toronto: The Ontario Science Center, Ontario Place with its concrete waterslides that you rode down on a foam mat which if you were lucky would stay underneath you the whole way to the bottom, this big fountain that they actually let you wade in, and the CN Tower, with its incredible views and the glass cutouts in the floor and the open platform where you were out in the wind with just a bunch of metal bars to protect you and the weird little funzone it had in its base, with stuff such as, if I remember correctly, this lengthy contraption you could crawl through with like a rope bridge and rollers you could slide down. I think most of that is either gone now or very, very different.
Strange-Ad1387@reddit
In fact they are about to start dismantling Ontario Place and turn it into a spa and a new water park. Toronto in the 80's/90's was the best place on earth, now....just a carboard condo wasteland. Oh well...

I mean wasn't much of the great Gen X comedy from SCTV, as in many of the original SNL folks including Lorne Michaels were either from Canada or worked there before SNL (actual Canadians include Akroyd, Hartman, Myers, Candy, Macdonald, Short, Shaffer, Jim Carrey and Jim Henson - not all on SNL I realize).
Otherwise, I grew up visiting Toronto in H.S. taking the train from Michigan and spending a week most summers in Cape Breton always stopping at Frenchy's to try to find some cool and super cheap clothing.

I tried telling my teacher Strange Brew was based on Hamlet so I could write a paper about it. She thought I was making it up. Always hated that teacher.
RoninRobot@reddit (OP)
Gender swapped Hamlet told by Rosencrance and Gildenstern. Rosey is even sniffing flowers pierside before he “drowns.” That teacher should remove that stick in their ass.

Kids In The Hall remains my favorite comedy group of all time. I've gotten to see Bruce and Kevin doing solo performances in recent years, which was also a treat.
It wasn't just that they were funny, but also incredibly endearing. They made me feel understood in a way that's difficult to quantify, but that I am incredibly grateful for.
