Prototype M38 Carcano with what appears to be a type I 5rd internal box magazine. Other than the picture I can't find any other reference to this model.

Interesting! Makes sense that they'd mess around with it for the M38. A Mauser type internal mag is much better than the en bloc. My guess is they didn't do anything with it cause it was too much change from the existing design that was already in service. Seems to be a common thing.

You're not wrong, but it is slightly hilarious to think that they thought it'd be acceptable to change their standard cartridge, but changing the magazines for their new rifles for their new cartridge was a step too far.

I mean yeah, I agree haha. But it seems like many militaries are afraid of changing things, even if the change is definitely for the better. I mean it's the whole reason magazine cut-offs exist.
