A gap-closer is a driver that has a compulsion to close the gap regardless of speed, lane position, or perceived time-save on the commute. Their worst nightmare is an open freeway with no cars, because their compulsion goes unfulfilled. It isn't about speed to them, it is about getting people to move out of their way or to demonstrate that they must have free passage, at any cost on their wreckless drive to wherever they are going - this is all they care about.

yeah, it’s a fallacious counter argument. you literally created a fake person that is not what was being talked about and assumed that people who use cruise control do that via “people who depend on cruise control to not pay attention to driving”

Then you used that fake person to go against consensus and make the argument that cruise control is akin to giving up control of your vehicle and should be used rarely

the reason to use cruise control is that it gives you PERFECT CONTROL of your speed in a way, and helps make driving safer when used by a decent driver.

you’re logic is flawed, just be attentive and also use cruise control. the brakes still work, you still have control over the vehicle. you’re still expected to interact with other drivers.

driving would be so much better if we all adapted a single dogma around how we should act on the road, and every single time there’s a thread on here, there’s always someone defending some ill-thought out take that no one agrees with.

Wrong. I can show you a picture of my Freightliner Cascadia with cruise control on. It tells you that there will be fluctuations between +/- 4 mph. I don’t know if my car says anything like that since I never use it.

Just a few days ago on the interstate, I got stuck behind a left lane camper for a little bit till they finally moved over to the right and I overtook them. As I'm getting back in the right lane, I see in one of my rearview mirrors that this guy immediately gets back in the left lane even though there's no one going slow enough for him to even pass.....

I nearly got into an accident because of some dick that did this (but worse) a couple months ago.

I needed to get in the right turning lane, and tried to merge behind some guy, but he slowed down to get next to me. So I tried slowing down more first but so did he. So I sped up, and so did he. I finally got some distance between us, me slowing down again and tried to merge over and this dude slammed his brakes as I was mid merge and I almost crashed into him. The car behind me almost crashed into me.

When passing a semi go 5mph faster then you were and more if you have people behind you/feel safe doing so. If someone’s riding your ass and think they’ll cut over early, throw your blinker on as you’re passing the truck driver. Almost always buys you enough time to get some distance in front of the truck and safely getting over.

I don't give a fuck about any of that.

I feel like the only person in the world who doesn’t get upset at left lane campers or people who go the speed limit or under. I don’t block the left lane and I like to go 5-10 over but if I get behind someone going slow or blocking the left lane I just sit back and relax, continue listening to my podcast or a good song and enjoy the drive. No need to be angry all the time.

Something that helped me is hearing that everyone drives differently. If I come up on someone blocking the left lane instead of thinking “they should move over is the law”. I think to myself “ha I’m also breaking the law by going over the speed limit so eh I guess I get to listen to my podcast a little longer”. I don’t see why it’s such a huge deal to people tbh. You want them to follow the keep right rule (which they should) but you yourself are also breaking the law by speeding.

This complaint always makes me laugh. If you’re so close to the car in front, that there’s not enough room for someone to merge in, you’re either going really slow or you’re a tailgating asshole. If you’re going really slow, then someone squeezing into that space, shouldn’t result in you needing to “slam” your brakes. Also, if you’re going that slow then there’s no reason why you can’t just leave enough space for an impatient idiot to jump into. You’ll be able to recreate that space without slamming your brakes because in heavy traffic like that, it’s gonna be stop/start anyway. So you just make new space once traffic is moving again. This is easily anticipated behaviour, with a very simple way to prevent a collision without inconveniencing yourself.

I avoid driving in heavy traffic if I can because there’s so many impatient idiots who constantly switch lanes. So I understand the frustration of people constantly jumping in front. When I have to drive in heavy traffic, I stay in one lane and leave enough space for the idiots. I have never had to slam my brakes to avoid those idiots because I leave space in anticipation. Most of the time, I end up playing leap frog with them without ever leaving my lane.

If you’re going fast enough that you need to slam your brakes to avoid them, you’re both assholes. You shouldn’t be so close to the vehicle in front to begin with. In general, if you maintain a safe distance relative to your speed, you can drastically decrease your risk of a collision.

I never really understood the reason for speeding up when people pass. It seems to happen a lot on highways when, say... I'm behind someone going slow in the slow lane who I'm about to pass, I go to pass, then suddenly the person I'm passing is not only up to the speed limit but exceeding it. Nothing like someone with their blinkers on and skipping 5+ turns between Plaza and side right Roads. So you try to pull out and almost get hit, which would've been considered your fault for not yielding the right of way even though they had improper use of turn signals.

As for going under the speed limit. It is fine if it's like 5 under and they're on the rught lane. It's called a speed limit for a reason, it’s the limit (by law, anyways). That's why I hate I-4 in FL. Left lane campers.

On two lane roads, The ones that pull out in front of you when no one is behind you to immediately make a left turn and have to stop and wait for traffic to clear to complete the turn.

The brake happy people, instead of just putting their energy into turning the steering wheel to go around a gradual curve they feel the need to slow way down to make it.

The all or nothing's, they either have the accelerator to the floor or the brake. No sense of coasting to slow down.

Also to add to the list..

People who can't go a consistent speed are ridiculous.

Those that drive 5 under until you go to pass, then speed up and try to keep you from passing.

People that drive 5 under until you pass them, then they speed up and ride your ass, even though you're doing 10-15 over.

People who tailgate when you're driving over the speed limit. I can see if the person you're behind is driving slow..if you can't keep speed then move over or get off the road..but if I'm going 60 in a 50 and you come up on my ass, I'm gonna test your brakes for you..

I get tailgated even when I got 10 over (the max I will do). Some people are just assholes and despite tapping my brakes to at least activate the lights nothing works. I live in an area where deer are a huge issue especially at night which is when people like to tailgate me and if I had to slam my brakes cus of a deer, I’d probably end up in the hospital cus of the idiot tailgating me and not the deer.

Driving has mutual respect. Don't fuck with road respect and give way when it's appropriate and safe. Also mind everyone's space. If you want to speed and someone ahead of you, tough shit.

Also a blinker is an indicator of "I want to turn or change lanes." It's not a "I'm changing lanes at this second."

Too often people use it as part of their lane change only as they're changing and not before. We can see you're changing lanes. A blinker is an indicator that you intend to change lanes before you change lanes.

I've heard almost everyone I've even spoken to call it the "fast lane". That has a way different meaning than if people were to even call it the passing lane. I have no recollection of anyone really saying "stay on the right side of the road" in terms of highway driving until actually exploring online communities.

I feel like it's not a logical leap to think, "This is the lane you go in when you're going as fast as you're supposed to go" or... "I'm going 5 over the speed limit so it makes sense to default to being in the left most lane as it is the fast lane".

When I'm driving on certain toll roads that have a lot of signs about staying right except to pass, 99% of people seem to actually follow it. I'd be surprised though if there weren't logical reasons why the signs and such aren't in busier areas, could just be an issue with the state I live in.

Unless otherwise marked the speed limit is the same for all lanes of traffic. You don't get to drive faster just cuz you're in the left lane. It's only the "fast lane" because you have to go faster to pass/people who drive fast tend to be in that lane alot (passing other people).

When the lane is empty, someone can get in that lane, speed up as fast as they need to, pass, return to the right lane and cruising speed. By camping in the left lane you are limiting how fast the next person can accelerate, limiting their aplbikity to pass, resulting in then being unable to pass and that causes a backup resulting in the "fast" lane going essentially the same speed as the "slow" lane.

We are talking about a divided highway, with 2 lanes going one way and 2 lanes going the other. Idk if I'd call that a "4lane" because a 4 lane highway is very different than a divided highway. You tend to only see 4 lane highways in huge cities, and in that case you'd actually want to drive in the middle lane as the right lane is for people merging.

If you'd call a divided highway a 4lane then would you call a regular road a 2lane? And if so then you definitely shouldn't be in the left lane cuz that's where the opposing traffic is supposed to go!

Road and/or traffic conditions can make driving below the highway speed limit prudent.
Electric vehicles will often drive under the speed limit due to a lack of charging infrastructure, sometimes compounded by head winds or extreme temperatures.

All I'm saying is if people paid attention while driving and are capable of handling a vehicle at a high rate of speed there wouldn't be as many issues. Speeding kills is the worst slogan ever because it says driving slow is safe. It's just as dangerous if not more when others are driving faster..... difference in speed kills.honestly all the fucking time wasted by slow drivers every single day for every single person's travel. Even if it's an average of 1 minute per person per day on average that's 170,000 years of life wasted each year in the US alone. Take into account an average life expectancy of 70 and you waste the equivalent of 2500 lives each year. And I know the average time wasted per person is NOT 1 minute. It's about 5-10 mins minimum per day.

And I've tried but the public schools (that I partially fund) would rather give the money to the teachers and push their failing curriculum. Don't even get me started with that.

Young adults today don't know how to cook, don't know how to drive, don't know how to get a mortgage and then get taken advantage of by lenders. Don't know finances or how to live in the real world... focus with schools on passing sub-standard standardized testing. Where you can't even fail anymore, it's ridiculous.

I would LOVE to see my tax dollars spent on people learning how to actually drive properly. And to fund DUI punishment for texting and driving. That one would work wonders.

As for Uber. No they can spend their own money they would have spent on a car or whatever. Uber drivers will have had to pass the proper driving course, maybe an additional course since it's a driving job like trucking. You take your life and others and the responsibility when you get on the road same applies when you get in an Uber. If they can't handle one, they get a shot at the other.

I'm cool with speed limit drivers. I do beach drives at the speed limit with the top down on the car all the time, and I enjoy the heck out of every minute of it.

Just follow lane etiquette, and nobody's gonna mess with you.
