I don't know where OP is, but technically if she's in the driver's seat, it's standing, not parking. There's a legal distinction between stopping (engine running, operator in driver's seat, but car not moving), standing (engine off, operator in driver's seat) and parking (engine off, no operator in the driver's seat), at least in my state. Parking might be illegal, but at least where I am, she's not parked. If she's standing, that could be legal depending on the road, and if she's within 6 inches of the curb (standing in the middle of the roadway is not legal, but within 6" of the curb is different since that's off to the side).

To summarize, this may not be illegal, it depends entirely on the laws where OP is located.

It depends. Is this a residential road? There's usually no marked lanes (at least not on most of the residential roads near me) and it's perfectly normal for cars to stop, stand, and even park on the sides of these roads. Is this that type of road? If so, and the person OP is talking about is within 6 inches of a curb, then yes it's legal. Hence why I framed my entire comment around, it depends on the laws where OP is.

It is not illegal to park on most public roadways in my area. Each municipality will have it's own laws here. So this will depend on each city/town.

BUT almost all that allow parking do not allow it within X feet of a stop sign/intersection for exactly this reason.

If she is just parked on the side of the road, she is doing nothing wrong and you are being what the young people call a "karen."

If you can think of a safer spot for her to park, be a decent person and talk to her yourself. For example, if you are really worried about the safety of the lady and others, why not let her park in your driveway for 20 minutes while she waits for her children?

What is with people now that their kids can't even walk to the damn bus stop? It's part of growing up and learning to do things. Kids that play sports don't even go to practice without parents anymore. Those were places where we learned how to socialize with other kids. Kids can't do that with a parent present 24/7. And if the parent is going to get in the car and take the kid ,what's the point of waiting for a bus? May as well go to the school at that point.

To be fair:

Some kids are meant to walk up to two miles to the bus. That adds a lot of time to their day which already starts very early. Even one mile adds a lot of time when the bus comes at 6:30 am.

Some of those 1-2 mile paths don't have any sidewalk and are high traffic.

Often it's pouring rain/freezing cold/ice. Probably not this month in the united states, but frequently enough during the year.

Plenty of parents work and need to see their kid made the bus and then they leave from there to drive to work.

Plenty of other reasons other than "precious princess can't walk for two minutes and then stand for six minutes until the bus comes" (which IS sometimes the reason, but you can't know what the reason is when you see it)

Generally, it's not legal to park or stand at a stop sign, except momentarily. Momentarily being the time it takes someone to get out of the car. Not 20 minutes, which is never a "short time" to be doing nothing in a car, regardless of the scenario.

It's a traffic infraction. One that creates a safety issue. You can either stop complaining about it or call the police. There's no one else to call.

You could talk to her, respectfully... without the immediate impulse to yell at a stranger... and calmly and politely let her know it's illegal to park there and it's creating a safety issue. A little kindness and backbone could be plenty enough to resolve it.

Look up your state's rules on parking near a stop sign - most have a minimum distance that must be maintained. Same with fire hydrants.

I’m not going to read all the comments, so forgive me if this is redundant, but in many states it’s illegal to park within X feet of an intersection or traffic control sign/device. (In Pennsylvania it’s 30 feet, and some municipalities paint the curb yellow as a courtesy). It’s usually not illegal to park on the side of the road in residential areas unless there’s a no parking sign. So the real issue is she’s parking too close to the intersection and needs to park further back.

Have you tried the friendly approach of “Hey, I know you’re just waiting for your kid’s bus, but parking so close to the intersection is dangerous. Would you mind parking a bit further back?” I find that some people are just ignorant/inconsiderate and don’t mean to inconvenience or endanger anyone, they just live in their own little world and don’t think about anybody else.

If that doesn’t work, call your municipal police or council and ask that the law be enforced (or no parking signs be put up.)

You can’t park there at all for any reason, much less at a stop sign. Doing it at a stop sign means you’re literally in the lane of traffic, and she’s obviously aware.

Depending on the size of your town, I’d either put a call in, or I would swing by the police station and let them know what’s happening. And that there have been a number of very close calls because of this woman. So could they maybe have someone there a couple of days to make sure she understand that that’s not something she should be doing

Is there a time the bus is there and unloading kids? We all know it shouldn’t happen. One of us is unloading kids, but we’ve also seen those cars that don’t stop when the buses unloading. Run right past the kids coming off the bus. Passed the bus when it’s unloading kids.

Partly depends on state/city laws as to how close you can park to an intersection, if there are parking spaces marked, presence of parking control signs, etc. Most places you're not allowed, but in a neighboring community where I live, they have parking spaces marked right up to the stop sign post.

I have a similar experience, I live in a nice trailer park and it’s a safe area and the bus drops off riiiight at the entrance of the trailer park

And literally at most it could be a 2 minute walk to wherever one they live in and it’s a kinda enclosed area (one entrance/exit)

And there’s always a parent who waits in their car riiight at the entrance, could they wait like 5 or 10ft back and still have clear vision of their kid? They sure could

But no they block the entrance/exit so when I have to go around them I have to hope nobody is gonna wanna turn into the trailer park at the same time

Some parents do have special arrangements with the school to have their kids picked up, and/or dropped off at more odd spots (provided that they, or another trusted adult will be there to meet with the kid(s) as they're getting off the bus). But that is just dangerously stupid! I'm honestly surprised that the bus driver themselves haven't said anything about it! I know standards have kind of dropped in the past few years due to school bus driver shortages, but damn....

The school should definitely NOT be allowing this, and a change in the drop off spot needs to be made asap!

It depends on local ordinance and how the street/curb is marked. It may be a "No Parking" zone but it's still OK for her to be stopped as long as she stays behind the wheel. Some places require that the car is running, but not all.

I agree with others that it's not safe and the police would probably make her move.

But also, she should understand that if she's waiting for the school bus, she could easily "wait" further from the intersection, and the pull up when she sees the bus.
