1 day itinerary in NYC. What to do?

Will be in NYC from Wednesday to Saturday due to concert on Friday that I'll be attending. I don't have anything planned for Thursday and is totally free what to do. I rented a place few blocks from MSG and would like to know what would be fully worthy of my time. I visited in 2017 and was able to check Central Park, Greenwich Village and WTS memorial site. I actually want to spend the day in either Metropolitan Museum of Art or Natural History but I wanna know what are other great and cheap options.

For cheap food NYC has pretty good options for those apps that help restaurants get rid of old food. Got many delicious pizzas and bagels at closing time.

There’s pay what you want/can days at lots of museums..the met is one. check which day, I believe it’s wednesday though. it’s so easy to spend an entire day in there
the highline is beautiful and a great free option. get a sandwich or a slice of pizza and hang out. russ and daughters isn’t necessarily cheap but a great place to get some new york-y food. they have babka ice cream sandwiches, bagels, noshy things. it’s been around for over 100 years.

Most pay what you wish options are only available to residents of NY, NJ, and CT, in my experience places do check ID to verify.

I easily spend an entire day at the museum of natural history. I probably could do a full two days because I'm a nerd like that.
The Met was an easy full day too. Its just huge and full of such variety (Egypt and Roman exhibits were my favorite)
If you like art-art then MoMa is cool. A lot of it wasn't my thing but seeing Van Gogh in person was cool and completely different than seeing prints.
If you just did the 9/11 site but not the museum...I'd consider doing the museum too. The 9/11 museum was deeply deeply impactful for me and I'm sure it'd be the same for anyone who was alive then.
$30 is pretty much the average cost and all the ones I listed are very popular but also very good and worth $30.

Thanks for giving time to elaborate on these places. I've been seeing photos of AMNH in encyclopedias during my childhood and got so invested for a bit when it got featured in Parasite Eve 2 in PS1. Hence the exciment. It will probably be my number 1 option after how you explained things. I just wonder if it's better for me to add an extra ticketed exhibition rather than just general admission since I can only spare 1 day.

I did the hayden planetarium just because it was historic and only $6.
It was very cool. Bonus points if you like planetariums and neil degrass tyson riffing on space.
I liked the planetarium since it was a chance to sit and watch something for 30 minutes which was a nice respite from all the 7 hours I was walking around.

Thank you! It's actually the one I'm looking forward to see.

amnh is the way to go. :)

Either of those museums is worthy and you can spend many hours at either one. You could do a museum, then lunch, then walk through Central Park or down one of the avenues. You can walk to 57th Street from either museum and then walk west or east.

Saw how accessible both are from each other too.

True. They’re just across the park. Personally I can’t do that much museum on one day, i get overloaded and prefer to just watch people, walk, and have some time to explore. But that’s just me!

I'm supposed to meet a local couple but they're in Maine until next week. So I just wanna experience something unique by myself. MET and Natural History are some of my priorities. Also food places nearby that don't need advance bookings. Lol

If you visit the MET midtown you can go with the same ticket to the MET at the Cloisters. Just the views make it worth it.

That's something I'll surely take note. Appreciate the recommendations.
