What happens if you're not home for the 7 days you have to respond to a jury summons?

Apparently you have 7 days to respond to a jury summons when it arrives in your post. This may be fine for the most part, but what if you're on holiday, or simply temporarily away from home during this time and so have no clue you've been mailed a jury summons? Do they seriously not email, or phone as well to make sure you KNOW that you have a jury summons? It would be incredibly unfair to pay a fine and have a record for simply being on holiday during the time you happen to receive a summons in your letter box.
