Well, I think it's similar to using the word genocide to refer to a particularly brutal war. It feels like it isn't emotive enough to catch what people are feeling about it, so they reach for the most emotionally impactful word they can find.
Ultimately, it's worrying, because then we have a gap left in the language. But hopefully a new word will be coined for what genocide used to mean?

Nothing has changed about the definition of genocide since the Convention on Genocide adopted Jewish lawyer and Nuremberg prosecutor Raphael Lemkin’s 5-part definition: .. any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such: (a) Killing members of the group; (b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group; (c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part; (d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group; (e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group. — Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, Article 2[8]
Israel has undeniably systematically committed all five offenses, which is why there is currently a war crimes trial going on at the ICJ concerning Bibi and Galant’s actions in furtherance of genocide. Interestingly, Lemkin’s initial motivation to develop a genocide definition was not the Holocaust, but the earlier Armenian Genocide. So, the definition is stable and internationally accepted. Only your head canon has invented exemptions that curiously conform to exactly the IDF’s hasbara about how their targeting of civilians is not genocide has changed. Work on that.

Nothing has changed in the wording of the summary, no. But laypeople often don't understand what it means. For example, "in part" means a specific subsection (e.g. an attempt, with intent, to kill all Sunni Muslims would be genocide even if one were not interested in killing Shias). It gets used by laypeople to mean "it doesn't matter if the intent isn't to destroy a whole people group".
I'm not saying that Lemkin's initial wording has changed, but rather that the term has entered the common parlance in a looser way than the legal definition had intent for. And maybe that is fine. Language shifts.

There is no plain text reading of the convention that does not cover Israel’s actions in Gaza. You’d be on stronger ground arguing that genocide itself covers a broader set of historic crimes than just the Holocaust itself. There have been at least 9 genocides in the 20th century. And some of them, like Suharto’s genocide in East Timor, were smaller affairs than brutal wars like the Iran-Iraq war. Genocide is not ‘more people died than in a war.’

The issue is definition, not scale. Genocide requires special intent to destroy a people, usually (by case law) requiring documents that show the intent and systemic nature, and such. What Israel is doing is, I think, incredibly uncaring to the point of coming under "reckless disregard for human life" in an attempt to make Hamas give up. That is not genocide, because the intention is to strongarm a political group to roll over. Nothing close to dolus specialis has been shown; instead, the opposite (a political intention) has been shown.
The members of the people in a genocide are deliberately targeted with the aim of wiping out the people group. Reckless disregard for life in pursuit of a political aim is war crime, not genocide.
I didn't answer because I don't get the impression you are even slightly interested in thinking in this situation.

Idk what ‘make Hamas give up’ is even intended to mean as a war aim, given how unrelated to that purpose are IDF actions and Israeli cabinet statements. Now that we’ve established that we’re discussing which war crime Bibi should be convicted of, and not whether he and Galant and many ordinary IDF soldiers belong in the dependent’s box at the ICJ, I’m curious what evidence you would cite to demonstrate that the war crimes committed by the IDF in Gaza are not genocide? I’m pretty sure every government that has committed genocide had some alternative explanation that could take the form ‘it was a brutal war and soldiers in this particular unit committed a massacre of civilians or other war crime, but there was no political level intent to destroy a specific named people group, so the political leaders who started this crime are not subject to genocide proceedings.’
In parallel, although I believe the legal criteria have been satisfied and await the ICJ’s ruling, I also have felt the ‘words fail’ sensation when confronted with the horrors in Gaza. What would you suggest persons who are not participants in the legal cases and just want to speak in public about the social and political meaning should say instead? I certainly want the consensus to be genocide not only because it’s accurate but because calling it that triggers human rights obligations for the US and other suppliers of weapons to Israel. There is significant talk in the UK that the government could itself be liable for war crimes if they don’t stop shipping weapons.

Even if Israel wanted the land, that wouldn't be intent to genocide. It is specifically the case that attempting to transfer people from a land is not considered genocide. The intention would have to be "kill all the Gazans in order to take their land" for it to qualify as genocide - in which case, we will need to see documentation to that effect.
To your question about how I would prove it is not genocide: you don't prove that something isn't genocide. The same way that you don't prove that a death wasn't murder, you prove that it was, and if it doesn't meet that, it gets prosecuted as something else (or, indeed, not at all). That being said, if there is proof that this was systematically planned in order to kill all the people of Gaza, and forcing a surrender or breakdown of Hamas was not the agenda, then I will have been wrong.
Soldiers typically are not the ones who commit genocide, by the way. The use of civilian forces in systematising death is a common marker of genocide. I think the WB is more primed towards a potential genocide than Gaza is for that reason (among others).
I see your point about wanting a more emotive word, but I feel like "war crimes" and "reckless disregard for human life" are already very serious and emotional. I don't need (for example) all institutional racism to be apartheid to feel like "institutionalised racism" is a bad thing, personally. And when we use terminology imprecisely in order to fulfill emotional needs, we cheapen those words. Maybe that's okay, though - maybe we will just come up with new words.

Ah, I should have added the qualifier ‘with no plans for resettlement.’ As in, sure Galant and others have proposed Egypt take the people of Gaza, but as Egypt has declined and Israel still went ahead and ordered everyone out of Northern Gaza while posting snipers along the evacuation route, this isn’t a population transfer. And if Israel didn’t want the land, why does Bibi show maps at the UN with Gaza and the West Bank marked ‘Israel’? And as clause C points out, the goal doesn’t have to be to kill all Palestinians to qualify as genocide. Merely that conditions of life are intentionally deteriorated to cause physical destruction of the people group in whole or part. Likely the blocking of food shipments into Gaza by the IDF prior to 10/7 already fulfills that criteria.

Since 32 countries have already provided a detailed accusation which the ICJ finds sufficiently credible to move to trial, someone in Israel must be preparing a defense to take to the ICJ. You have suggested that war crimes other than genocide have taken place, so presumably you have some evidentiary basis for that claim. I’m interested in what that basis is, and more expansively which defenses the Israeli government will most likely deploy at trial. If you want to demur on the latter question, that’s fine but it undermines your credibility as someone who confidently says genocide did not take place for you not even to defend that claim. Tell us why you think the ICJ case will fail on its evidentiary merits.
Agreed that involving civilians is a common indication that genocide rather than other war crimes are taking place. I mentioned soldiers as an example of a government agreeing to other war crimes charges, and scapegoating some ordinary soldiers in order to do it. As for IDF soldiers that belong in the defendant’s box at the ICJ, the bulk deserve to be there for war crimes other than genocide. Probably just some of the pilots who blew apartment buildings full of civilians and the soldiers who killed aid workers to prevent food from getting into Gaza are liable for participation in genocide.
I don’t want a more ‘emotive’ word. I want organizing slogans. Statements that should be on a sign at a demonstration, in the prompt for a petition, turned into a chant at an encampment. Getting ordinary Americans to apply pressure to all the institutions in the US that are complicit in the broader military occupation and specifically in the attacks on civilian Palestinians in Gaza is the strongest leverage we have to end these atrocities. I want to sharpen our speech so more people will get activated to end this.

We are back to that issue of you not understanding clause c. "In whole or in part" doesn't mean that Group A only have to want to do a certain amount of killing, it means that a specific subsection of Group B can be the ones targeted for extermination instead of the entirety of Group B. Geography is an acceptable subgroup, so "the Palestinians of Gaza" can be the "in part" of a genocide of Palestinians. "Sunni Muslims" can be the "in part" of a Muslim genocide, etc. It's not a descriptor of scale.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the case. I do not think anything that has been available has shown anything close to intent, which is absolutely reqquired. I think when Israel is very happy killing whoever is in its path (Gazan, Israeli hostage, foreign journalist, trafficking victim), that reads as brutality in war that needs to be stopped and prosecuted, but not as genocide, because genocide definitionally requires the group (here, Palestinians) to be targeted specifically. I think Israel doesn't care whether it gets Gazan kids in its bombs the same way it doesn't care if it gets the hostages in it's bombs. The idea that this isn't bad is absurd, but "genocide" is not just a scaled-up version of "bad", it's a specific crime.

I apologize for the ambiguity of my invocation of clause C. The part demonstrated by the Israeli policy of blocking most food shipments to Gaza and uprooting agricultural land is indeed Palestinians in Gaza, not just ‘those aid workers and Palestinians who were involved with this one convoy of trucks.’ Just as there must be intent to destroy a targeted people group, there is no requirement that the aggressor was fully successful in their attempt to qualify as genocide.
That’s an interesting line, invoking an ‘indiscriminateness’ defense. Killing Journalists doesn’t provide much protection, since they are few in number of it would be easy to argue that killing them was in furtherance of a genocide because silencing witnesses to it with access to large global audiences. Israeli hostages the IDF absolutely assigns higher value to protecting than for Palestinians. Clearly not enough to overcome the political, personal, and geo-strategic motivations for Bibi’s war cabinet to continue the attacks at the cost of killing many hostages. I wonder what percentage of the hostages need to die, and whether those deaths need to be directly from Israeli missiles and munitions, for their deaths to act as a defense against charges of targeting Palestinians in Gaza as a people group? As to trafficking victims, what’s the latest on the scale of that? I’ve only come across a couple of high profile but isolated examples. Anyway, I think the Israelis are on stronger ground with your first take, that they’re brutally accepting higher volumes and rates of civilian casualties on strikes they assert were targeted at a specific enemy combatant or their firing positions. Easier to generate a giant paper trail with whatever intelligence they can fashion and hope to bog down proceedings than just claim they couldn’t be accused of targeting Palestinians in Gaza because they tried to kill everyone in Gaza when Gaza is >99% Palestinian.

I can't continue to respond in depth because it is past midnight where I am. I just wanted to add that I certainly wouldn't suggest "we don't care who we kill as long as we get a surrender" as a defense because, presumably, they don't want to just swap genocide with another crime. But it struck me in your response that this is similar to the bombing of Dresden - which was also a crime and absolutely awful, and done to try to force surrender at the expense of up to 25,000 lives in two days.
But bombing campaigns don't usually get understood as genocide precisely because they are so broad (and I am unsure there has ever been a bombing campaign without a "surrender now" kind of intention). You don't just get your intended victims, you get anyone in the vicinity, which is going to include non-Germans and non-Palestinians. If this does get prosecuted as genocide, we should really look back to the bombing of Dresden and wonder if we should start referring to it as a genocide of the Germans, too.

Given Bibi and Galant’s belief that they’ve done nothing wrong, I agree that they’ll go for a defense that evades any consequences, not just the most severe. It would take something sufficiently catastrophic that it’s Benny Gantz or Yair Lapid making that call for a guilty pleading to a lesser charge is considered.
Have you listened to Blowback’s season on the Korean War? It changed my perspective on bombing as the primary means to carry out a genocide. That was certainly the case in the northern portions of the Korean peninsula.
As to Dresden, I would think that would depend on whether people in and around Dresden counts as a distinct people group apart from other kinds of Germans. As a partially successful genocide of the broader German people, I’m open to a reading where most sustained bombing campaigns of civilian areas are genocides, but I’m confident the UN and ICJ would not. Which mitigating circumstance, such as having credibly offered terms for surrender and been rejected or most large modern cities being at least somewhat cosmopolitan in population composition, they would cite to deny a claim of genocide brought by the people of Dresden or some regional sub-group of Germans is beyond my knowledge. Maybe there should be two levels of genocide? Otherwise, I’m not convinced simple war crimes charges suffice for acts that were almost but not quite genocide. Anyway, good night.

Burning people alive was still considered a huge no no in the Middle Ages. It was still done, but almost solely to send a message to their enemy which only worked because it was a huge no no. Medieval times are also generally considered to be a period where humanity’s morals were at a low (albeit we won’t know much about the Bronze Age). Mix that in with the fact that they’re innocent children at a hospital and you’re not winning brownie points in the moral department in any period of history.

Looks like Israel decided they wanted revenge for that training camp bombing, this conflict has basically just become a vehicle for the extremists on both sides to justify bloody acts of revenge against their hated enemies while trying to spin the story for the news media so your side can be seen as the goodies and not the baddies.
Chances of either side coming to a compromise and peace finally coming about gets more dead with each new attack and each passing month, Hamas and Hezbollah are happy enough to let others face the firing squad for their actions (or in most cases the bombing squad) while Israel becomes increasingly more bloodthirsty and their goal of saving their hostages keeps getting set to the side in favour of teaching their enemies a lesson, it certainly doesn't help things either that the US, UK, and Germany are willing to write all of the blank cheques that the Israeli government could ever want. I personally can't see any peace coming about while these parties continue to finance Israel's war of extermination, as long as Israel believes that they're invincible in the region they will never be willing to back down, this is probably their greatest and only chance at accomplishing all of their goals in the Middle East and establishing complete dominance over the region, and I doubt they'll be willing to give up that chance over things like morality or a conscience, they'll have to instead be forced into it by having their sugar daddies step away from the situation and stick to only helping in the defence of Israel, not funding and arming them for actual conquests across the region.

As part of their evidence, they published pictures that failed to show what they allege. Imaging shows bullets in the brain, with no entry hole, no deformation of the bullets, and no gruesome exit wound that would happen if they were shot with IDF 5.56.

I hope I'm not insulting your intelligence too much when I tell you that concrete is pretty rock-like and it can absorb water and explode, sounding really similar to a gunshot. I hope it's not insulting to say that different sizes of rocks and concrete with different amounts of trapped moisture leads to different noises when they explode, crazy huh!
Holding concrete (or any porous rock with moisture inside) at temperatures > 100ºC causes steam buildup. The fire in the video was huge. The higher the temperature, the faster this happens and the higher the chances of explosive spalling are. If there's rebar inside, chance goes up even more because it expands and is also a better conductor of heat than the concrete.

I did. Nothing in it proves ammunition. Lots of tents in the area. Each tent could contain items held by a family including Gas Stoves, wood/coal for heating and bunch of other shit. The tents themselves could be made from poppable materials and have strings that could pop due to heat. This is without mentioning that this is on hospital grounds and lots of possible hospital materials are flammable. But let's say for argument sake that these are bullets popping; you'd have to be sick in the brain to think this justifies burning dozens of people including kids.

At this point, the biggest german-speaking subreddit is even worse than the german state media which, by international standards, tries it's very best to shine the best light possible on Isreal, or the worst light on Palestinians and Lebanese People by repeating Knesset Propaganda.

The school Israel striked here had victims that fled to the hospital in this post where they were bombed by Israel. Israel double tapped innocent victims. Israel wanted to punish them and targeted humanitarian sites.

They've stopped caring about reports a while back. Once they realized that killing Un personnel and debating raping prisoners on state TV isn't impacting their military support and financing, they barely even bother caring.
