What weapon would you advice when firearms are illegal?

“Prepping and forgetting a weapon is prepping for someone who didn’t forget” is something I’ve learned from this sub by now.
I understand the need for a weapon for self defense in case SHTF. Issue though, in the Netherlands most weapons are banned.
I could get an illegal firearm but the odds of me having to prep for jail would be pretty high. I’d rather not😂.
Since firearms are not that common here either it’s safe to assume most other people don’t have one either. And want to focus on the defense side of things: if it looks like it’s not worth it, move onto a more easy target. Same how a dog and cameras deter thieves; not worth the risk if there is some low hanging fruit elsewhere.
What weapons other than guns would you advise that don’t break the bank either? I thought about a catapult, air pressure gun, bow/crossbow.
Would love to hear your thoughts!
MonumentalArchaic@reddit
What are you talking about? You can own guns in the Netherlands for hunting. Get a hunting license and hunt once a year and then you can own a rifle.
Traditional-Leopard7@reddit
A modern crossbow is incredibly intimidating when pointed. Even unloaded. Also incredibly lethal when loaded. Unfortunately takes longer to reload of course.
Adol214@reddit
Second crossbow over bow.
Bow is a superior weapon for many reason. Mostly because faster.
But for defending a home: cross bow.
Easy to shoot even if you don't know about it. Your can keep it ready to fire without effort, so you can keep someone under supervison for a long time, let's say during a discussion.
And cross bow have higher penetration force on short range.
Agree about the speed factor, but few archer are able to shoot fast with a minimal accuracy. I would argue that if someone charged your from 10m distance, you will shoot only once regardless of the weapon. And that touching a moving target after 10m is tricky even for a skilled shooter.
The_Burnt_Bee_Smith@reddit
I mean, you only get one shot. If you're too weak to draw back quick enough, you better not miss
Adol214@reddit
Fast shooting with a bow is a skill which is rarely practiced. At least not in my area, as people shoot for sport, not hunting.
The technic is different. You typically hold your arrow in your bow hand. With practice you can shoot every few seconds. Also you don't have to fully draw the bow if you are in close quarters.
Once again, bow is better, but require skills not everyone have the time or dedication to get.
The_Burnt_Bee_Smith@reddit
I was talking about crossbows, takes longer to reload than a bow
Adol214@reddit
Sorry. I read too fast. Indeed crossbow is slower.
Regardless, I don't know if I could shoot twice on a charging aggressor from 10m using a bow.
The_Burnt_Bee_Smith@reddit
Shoot once and grab the axe!
Adol214@reddit
Indeed.
On a side note, I imagine a cross bow tie be a better blunt instrument than a bow.
tyboxer87@reddit
If anyone is interested in the finer point of bow fighting this instagram account is fantastic and super entertaining. https://www.instagram.com/blumineck/

P3nnyw1s420@reddit
Yeah bro haven’t you ever played Zelda?
zultan_chivay@reddit
Good post. I use both vertical and cross bows. The vert bow has a much longer learning curve.
The cobra adder is a 5 to 7 round repeating crossbow that is plenty fast to reload and it's easy to learn. Good for close quarters and can quickly be reloaded with a clip. I put a NV monocle on mine. I wouldn't exactly want to fight a rifleman with it, but you could do worse. Especially at night
RealTeaToe@reddit
A physically weak person can shoot a crossbow with the correct attachments or if someone has loaded it for them
They're semantics, but if we're talking SHTF semantics are v important.
Adol214@reddit
I did said "shoot", not arm.
I assume it was clear, but thanks to specifying, as we never know who is reading...
Indeed, some accessories allow a weaker person to arm a cross bow. Some are damn slow too....
RealTeaToe@reddit
Y'know, if I had an ounce of reading comprehension I might have picked up on that.
Seems pretty clear now.
The cranks 🫠 so useful, but so, so, so slow..
mmmmpisghetti@reddit
This is why it's important to put level up skill points into crossbows...
RealTeaToe@reddit
I've been doing that. It's tough as a 110-115LB dude drawing my 160LB crossbow.
mmmmpisghetti@reddit
I know nothing about crossbows outside of D&D, but that sounds like a Big Damn Crossbow.
KitsuneKas@reddit
Crossbows can easily go into the multiple hundreds of pounds of draw weights, especially medieval crossbows that were much less efficient. Some historical windlass crossbows could exceed 1000 lbs of draw force. And I'm not talking about mounted siege weapons/ballistae either. They didn't actually produce that much projectile energy because the stiffness of the metal limbs wouldn't allow for an efficient release, but you get the point.
Modern compound hunting crossbows generally fall within the 350-550 lb range. An 160lb bow is geared toward faster, easier loading for primarily target use, potentially self defense, but crossbows are generally not designed or marketed for that purpose these days.
mmmmpisghetti@reddit
TIL some cool things about crossbows! Thanks!
RealTeaToe@reddit
It's not even a big damn crossbow! It's quite average size for a below-average size person. It probably looks like a big ass crossbow when I hold it though 🤣 until you realize it's just a short ass dude holding it.
phantumjosh@reddit
A bow is very quick to reload, very accurate (there’s a reason we have 3D competitions).
I would be more scared breaking into a house with someone pointing a bow at me than a gun. (The bow users are more likely to be accurate)
Hitting moving targets isn’t as hard as you think it is, and after firing you have a long range club, or you drop your bow and finish them off with a knife/bat/sword.
Adol214@reddit
Agree.
It is just more difficult than a cross bow.
If you know how to use a bow. Take the bow.
If you have to hand over something to your untrained SO, pick the crossbow.
phantumjosh@reddit
Exactly
Eryeahmaybeok@reddit
Arrows don't need to be shot to be a short range weapon jabbing motion
Adol214@reddit
Google "ham knifes"
It is basically a one edge short sword. blade around 30cm/12" long.
I pick that over a carbon arrows any day.
agent_flounder@reddit
😳 I had no idea. Lol one of the ones listed is made to look like a Japanese sword. Hmm.
"But, but it's for slicing ham, officer!"
Adol214@reddit
Just buy the ham holder as well. And keep them together.
Aeropro@reddit
Just like the ol’ baseball bat and mitt combo
LunchboxBandit66@reddit
Disagree. Ham is food. You’re really set with the ham combo 😂
DaGreatPenguini@reddit
An entire aged prosciutto can be a devastating weapon, as well as a delectable appetizer.
HoiPolloi2023@reddit
A canned ham would be a solution to the rancidity problem
Aeropro@reddit
I was just imagining being questioned by police:
“Sir, you’re saying that you don’t keep the ham knife as a weapon?”
“Yes, I was going to use it to carve my ham tonight, there’s one I. The trunk!”
“Yeah, we found the ham. It’s 6 months expired and rancid.”
“🤷♂️”
Terrato37@reddit
Can I shoot the ham knife out of my crossbow?
Adol214@reddit
Worth trying....
My cross bow is too small. So let's ask reddit and see if someone here have both a long cross bow and an ham knife.
Callmekanyo@reddit
Wait! It really is a “ham” knife?! 😂😂😂
Adol214@reddit
Google "Spanish ham".... And you will understand what it is for.
Eryeahmaybeok@reddit
Id use target aluminium arrows - ham knives normally have a rounded end. But I guess anything can be a weapon in the situation (just like anything can be a dildo if one's brave enough)
Adol214@reddit
Some have pointy end.
Callmekanyo@reddit
All I’m getting is prosciutto knives 😂
Cronewithneedles@reddit
Dude! I did google it and I’m going straight to Amazon. Thank you.
Helassaid@reddit
It’s just a much more fragile, mini-spear
BrandonMarshall2021@reddit
Yes plus you have to factor in draw time, and holding it. Imagine trying to negotiate while holding a fully drawn bow. Like, the intruder finally explains he was there to borrow a cup of sugar and you accidently loose the arrow because you were too tired to hold it anymore.
hx87@reddit
If you have a compound bow that isn't much of an issue. You can set up a bow with 60 lb draw so that at full extension the holding force is 1 lb or less.
OffshoreScalloper@reddit
This is why instinctive shooting is important. I can fire half a dozen well aimed shots from a recurve before a crossbow can be back into battery. Crossbow is definitely better for people who didn’t grow up shooting bows
BrandonMarshall2021@reddit
As soon as he sees that draw he's gonna duck.
thesauciest-tea@reddit
And you can continue holding the draw. As soon as he sees the crossbow pointed hes going to duck as well
BrandonMarshall2021@reddit
Yeah but aim and shoot with a crossbow is faster than aim, draw, and loose for a bow.
agent_flounder@reddit
How? Teach me your ways. How fast does it take you grab arrow, nock, and draw?
I'm terrible with bow and arrow although the house is small. Even I can hit a dinner plate at three paces lol.
For home defense I am trying to imagine how I would carry the quiver... Get up, grab bow, throw quiver over shoulder I guess
"Hold on criminals, just ... one sec... almost... Ok, come at me mfers!" 🤣
Fit_Acanthisitta_475@reddit
There is different between bow and compound bow. Small bow only draw 20lb, compound is 50lb, crossbow is over 100lb. Sounds like your rarely practice archery.
Adol214@reddit
Maybe you should refrain from making assumptions which sound like an attack, and focus on the topic at hand.
It seem to me you missed the point.
Shooting bow is more difficult, from a strength and techniques perspective.
You seem knowledgeable, so remember the lastest beginner which show up at your range....
In my experience, it take hours before they consistently hit the 10m target.
But I am fairly confident anyone with 15-30min training at the crossbow could hit a target.
I dont have much experience training novice with good crossbow, so I may be wrong here.
Anyhow, my main point was than shooting a crossbow is simpler for people without training or weak.
While I agree the number you gave are close to typical value, theses are not hard limit. Nor am I sur how they are relevant to the conversation.
I made a crossbow once. You can make it as weak as you want. It is not difficult to find tradicional bow pulling 40lbs. It was not uncommon for historical bow to be over 120lbs. Some historical crossbow go over 800lbs.
About the strength of bow vs crossbow, it is often misunderstood. Pull strength is not all that matter. Projectile weight is important. As well as other factors.
Here are two very good video if you want to educate yourself on the topic.
Bow vs crossbow theory https://youtu.be/dO_8ZQ37D4Y?feature=shared
Ted workshop 160lbs bow vs 860lbs crossbow practical test https://youtu.be/1w8yHeF4KRk?feature=shared
Fit_Acanthisitta_475@reddit
That’s problem Nowdays, people got offended for now reason. Theory and practices make huge difference. The average crossbow is hard to hold and shoot than a rifle, and much hard harder to shot accurately.
Average people can’t even draw the 40lb bow, that why people need start with 20lb. But both as lethal with good arrows head.
Nowdays Nobody can draw those 120lb bows.
IGnuGnat@reddit
lol
there is a bolt called the "gobbler guillotine" it's basically a set of small razor sharpened spinning helicopter blades
lil__squeaky@reddit
you have to be able to cock the crossbow, a weak person can’t do that.
Adol214@reddit
Correct. But they can shoot it.
For arming the cross bow, some mechanisms exist. But they are super slow.
Which is why historically, cross bow where mostly used for defending fortified position, ambush, and against armored soldiers.
lil__squeaky@reddit
you know a pretty good setup would be a crossbow with a crank cocker, my dad has one so he can still take advantage of bow season. the thing is super easy to crank a child could do it.
Peace_Hopeful@reddit
You can also make a crossbow out of a 2x4 with just a crappy ofla knife and hack saw. The better the tools and materials the better the bow naturally
Adol214@reddit
https://youtu.be/wWiZpenRGx8?feature=shared
"Dark age crossbow" and similar tutorial have interesting trigger. For home made cross bow, the trigger and how to hold the projectile are the main issues
Hngrybflo@reddit
could imagine getting with a mechanical broad head
tehdamonkey@reddit
I have used both. The modern crossbow looks good on paper... but just isn't effective. You have to be practiced with a bow. A good sport to train you on shooting a bow, carrying one, and being fast is bow fishing. It really teaches you the dynamic of the snap shot and the quick aim.
fatmanstan123@reddit
Crossbows can be hard to load though. And you got shot. And needs to be discharged. You can't leave a crossbow loaded for days on end. And I'm trying to imagine someone protecting their house from an intruder as they grab their crossbow and that hook tool and try to load it in real time demand. Of you have the strength for a bow, it's superior. And what does penetrative force matter anyways? A deer can be killed from a very low poundage recurve bow.
Wilder_Beasts@reddit
Moving targets (human sized) at 10m with a crossbow is not a challenge at all. They are much more accurate and easy to fire than you’re assuming.
Adol214@reddit
Agree.
For bow, 10m is somehow a limit for fast shooting and hit a 20cm target. At least for me.
threewhitelights@reddit
A physically weak person isn't prepped for anything. I'd argue that's a bigger concern than what weapon to use.
Adol214@reddit
Let me elaborate.
Many people cannot get fit to the point of pulling a heavy bow or lifting a lot of weight. Kids, elderly, people with health issue, arthritis, etc.
Compensate for these limitations IS prepping.
Also, you won't be at the top of your game during crises.
Picking a weapon anyone in your household can use easly is relevant.
Sames goes for fire arm by the way. If only you can fire your shotgun because of it weight or recoil, that is an issue.
Also, you need to be trained to handle a weapon. Cross bow training is faster and easier than bow. You could train a new joiner quickly. (Ofc your household should be trained in advance).
One example I like is the manual operation of air filter for bunker. It is quite easy and require little strength. A 7yr old can do it. (At least the model I had access to)
This is important, you cannot be the only one which can use some pieces of equipment.
But of course, being in good health is an important part of prepping. Just understand this has limits.
JASHIKO_@reddit
They are usually banned with firearms so rarely an option as a substitute.
Remarkable-Opening69@reddit
WHEN SHTF laws go out the window. Grab the AR.
JASHIKO_@reddit
Pretty much impossible in most parts of the world.
Laws or no laws.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
People with access to a machine shop can manufacture most parts. Even barrels are doable. Back when the Internet was still fun, some guy famously made an AK receiver out of an old shovel. Others have melted aluminum cans, and manufactured AR-15 lower receivers for funsies.
Basically, with access to tools, materials, and some knowledge, you can make your own guns. Do it enough, and you can refine your designs to be reliable.
Whether or not it's worth it to build up the tool set, skills, and materials is another matter, but it's not out of reach in most countries.
JASHIKO_@reddit
You've still got to get bullets which are just as regulated as guns in most places. Though it's probably a bit easier to convince someone to sell you a few on the side as bullets aren't linked yo your name just sale restricted.
But I do agree with your logic especially the tool set but its quite a bit of a commitment.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
There are certainly other barriers, and it's not like here where I can just get a case of ammunition shipped to my doorstep. I haven't looked into manufacturing brass casings, but precise dimensions are pretty important. Existing casings can be reloaded. Primers would probably be the most difficult things to manufacture, though you can reload existing primers. Smokeless powder can be manufactured, though I wouldn't want to do it, as I enjoy having all my fingers. Bullets themselves can be cast relatively easily. Doing all of that, and producing ammunition in any meaningful quantity sounds tedious. I can't see myself every having the patience for it.
I also can't imagine the reliability issues that would come with 100% home made ammunition. Smuggling and an illicit market is probably the way to go.
IntroductionWise8031@reddit
Unfortunately, making your own ammo is more of an activity for a large and organized group, especially if you have more than one caliber.
This-Rutabaga6382@reddit
But I mean from where ? In a region where that weapon or similar is generally not in the publics hands where are you going to source one ?
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
Issue though that until SHTF, the laws are still “in” the window.
Particular-Try5584@reddit
And getting one, and holding onto it during law windows is hard… if they are banned.
You need to practice with the banned weapon, get it through customs to your house undetected, and all the accoutrements that might be needed (ammo etc) as well.
And like any weapon, it’s only useful if it’s in your hand at the right time.
My MIL goes and gets the shot gun to kill snakes… she loses about half of them.
My husband grabs the long handled shovel by the back door… he kills most of them.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
Yeah but again, right now the laws still apply and it’s not worth losing my house and career and freedom over the potential need to defend myself in case a SHTF happens.
RISOvonVODKA@reddit
As a fellow European, most countries allow their citizens more freedom regarding firearms than in U.S. The chairman of NATO is Dutch, and he said that citizens across Europe should prepare for an open conflict. And if your own damm country does not allow you to train with guns and has no respect for your life... just pick a new home somewhere else and move. You have ONE life, and when people that have access to everything tell you that you don't need something... then you need it.
ArmouredArmadillo@reddit
The best thing Europe can do is to send back all the "doctors & engineers". Removing the problem is the answer, not looking for ways to defend yourself.
Remarkable-Opening69@reddit
When the problem is ignored?
capt-bob@reddit
Yes the shovel is easier not have at hand. Something with a sharpened edge and reach, or even as a bludgeon.
Particular-Try5584@reddit
Oh I agree. I live in a part of the world with VERY strict gun control. Being caught with an unlicensed weapon here just isn’t worth it.… during good times.
And then how do you magically fart one out when the going gets tough? (You don’t).
We are farmers, so we can have guns (hence MIL and her trying to shoot snakes), but it’s something my husband and I have discussed… having a gun won’t be the difference here if SHTF
jammin_jalapeno27@reddit
You can get a semi auto rifle. The FGC9 MK2 was created just for you. You just need a 3D printer and VPN. You can also create ammo by reloading it yourself. The weapon was created by a guy in Germany and a decentralized team specially for countries with tight gun regulations, and it’s designed to be impossible to regulate. People have even made it in Japan. It’ll take a few days to make the weapon and cost maybe $500 USD. You’ll have to research how to get the right parts and ammo components.
Basically, if you’re smart about sourcing, use a VPN, and shut up about it, it’s impossible for the government or anyone to know you have the weapon.
LordNyssa@reddit
Except in this case. While owning firearms are in most cases illegal in The Netherlands, bows, crossbows and PCP rifles (any caliber). Are completely legal.
JASHIKO_@reddit
Germany is the same. Yet Poland next door is fully banned.
LordNyssa@reddit
Hungary too, my father lives there. European laws are honestly a nightmare with how different it can be from one place to the next.
Terrato37@reddit

AndysBrotherDan@reddit

jimmywilsonsdance@reddit

AIDS_Pizza@reddit
Pointing an uploaded weapon and pretending it loaded is an extremely bad idea. You're giving the other person license to escalate to lethal force and don't actually have the ability to back it up on your end. Don't ever do this unless you want to die.
Traditional-Leopard7@reddit
Very true. I am thinking about a situation happening faster than you can grab the crossbow hook your loading rope and pull it back then drop in your bolt and then open the door. If you quickly raise your scary weapon it may deter some people. BUT you are absolutely right it may set them off and escalate or they may see it’s not loaded and escalate.
Penny_Wise-@reddit
The crossbow is not considered a firearm?
MEXIC075@reddit
Not yet, but there is legislation being considered to make them one, especially when it was pointed out they have more muzzle energy than some section 1 firearms.
thesauciest-tea@reddit
Goddamn give them an inch and they take it all. Thats why I'm against "common sense" gun control, it never ends
MEXIC075@reddit
Yeah, although the fact there have been two high profile crossbow murders during the consultation probably hasn't helped.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Two? During the span between the two, how many people have been stabbed to death?
MEXIC075@reddit
You can't completely ban knives or force people to get a knife license though as everyone uses knives every day. There is no real reason for anyone to own a crossbow, crossbow hunting is illegal and crossbow target shooting is so niche it's almost non existent. I'm against a ban personally but can see why the government can get away with it.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
My fondest memories are of my grandfather carving the Christmas ham with his beloved crossbow. A sacred family tradition.
I'd argue self defense is a good enough reason to own most personal weapons, but there are surprising number of governments to take a dim view on self defense.
Away-Map-8428@reddit
the cops currently say a bike lock purchased at the school bookstore is a weapon and will say you have malicious intent for possessing it but 2A people are silent because they dont because, well ya know.
No_Hope_Here_@reddit
"Common sense gun control" is common sense using gun control to control law-abiding citizens. If a criminal wants to get their hands on a gun, the written law won't prevent them from getting a gun. Gun control only controls the law-abiding citizens. It has no effect on criminals who really want to get their hands on a gun.
VitalRMS@reddit
Yes this… new crossbows are deadly and you can get small tactical ones that will still shoot a bolt 350-400 feet per second. That will handle any situation you need it to from self defense to hunting and it will do it pretty quietly.
jitasquatter2@reddit
Google instant legolas. There's a mad German guy who invented a fast reloading system for cross bows and normal bows. It's not as fast as a modern firearm, but it's pretty fast. It's really neat.

You’ll have to modify the nail gun, they have safeties where you can’t shoot them unless they are pressed up against something, presumably a board
Immediate-Scheme-288@reddit
They barely break skin if you’re not very very close to the target. It’s not like a cartoon where the nails fly straight and go into what you’re aiming at and stick in. They spin and slow very fast. At best you can deter someone that doesn’t know this by not shooting nails at them so they can’t see how ineffective it is. I’d confidently combat someone with a piece of lumber or metal if all they were trying to attack me with a nail gun. The lethal range of a handheld weapon is much greater than a nailgun. If you want range a slingshot and a bag of steel ball bearings can be accurate and lethal up to the 50-100 meter range or more with practice and it would be more more stealthy than a nailgun

I'm in Canada and you can get firearms with difficulty. It's also expensive to practice shooting, which is 100% skill based.
I bought a pistol crossbow, which I'm able to practice with in my backyard. I also have a baseball bat, and I always know where my hatchet is.
No_Character_5315@reddit
It's a 1 day course to get a fire arms license that I don't know anyone that's failed cost is under 200. You can get a maverick 88 shotgun brand new for around 200- 300 bucks brand new or used the same or less than a decent crossbow. Training 12 Guage rounds are less than 50 cents a shell I have no idea. For 500 bucks Canadian 400 usd. You can be licensed and armed with a shotgun not sure what your talking about.
JoeCabron@reddit
Shotguns are illegal in the Netherlands? That’s bizarre. In my opinion, shotgun and birdshot is the best home defense solution. The sound of a pump shotgun, being cocked, is recognized all around the world.

AndysBrotherDan@reddit
I'm at a time in my life where a free weekend is hard to come by. You also have to keep it in a safe afaik. I bought my crossbow for 100$, I'd be spending much much more money and time getting a firearm.

This will probably get lost because the post is a few days old, but if you're still reading responses you should consider two things:
Stopping power: how fast will using the weapon put an immediate stop to a threat
Range: can you defend yourself at a range where the attacker cannot successfully attack, or is much less likely to be dangerous.
For example, bows satisfy the range requirement in many cases, but your typical recurve bow has fairly limited stopping power and is unwieldily to use in a tight space. Without good shot placement, it won't stop the attack immediately. A crossbow has slightly better stopping power, but still nowhere near that of a firearm. On the contrary an axe has excellent stopping power, but it's such a close range weapon that using it will put you in substantial danger. Parse through the suggestions here with these things in mind.

Kind of pointless to ask this question without also giving us a list of illegal weapons?
Now of course I looked it up and you can own a firearm in the Netherlands it's just more difficult and only allowed for specific purposes.
So maybe do your research and get one legally?
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)

tooserioustoosilly@reddit
If you think having a lot of people comment means any intelligence was used then you are mistaken.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
I never said that.
tooserioustoosilly@reddit
No you equated people giving comments as them giving good advice.
It's simple if you want real advice on any subject or issue you have to set parameters and limitations and expectations.
But it's obvious that your country actually does have firearms and you if not a criminal and not mentally ill can go and apply to own a firearm. Just have to join a target shooting sport or go get your license to buy and sell firearms in your country.
See there are no countries that fully restrict firearms, just a lot that only allow the rich and powerful to own them. Your country is one that allows those with more money the ability to own firearms.
So of course listen to some of these comments go learn to use a halberd or something like a garden tool so that if a shtf event happens you can go out and pretend you are in a video game or something.
You also could do what the majority of the prepping community fails to do. You could move to a place that has much better laws and weather conditions to be more likely to survive if a shtf event happens.
But of course if you are just counting the number of comments like most in these groups actually do then carry on.

Otherwise, take some true self-defense classes and learn how to use a short stick or other improvised weapons. Knifes are amazing tools to be proficient with in close quarters but don't bring a knife to a gun fight... Dogs (not the little ankle bitters), cameras, and signs indicating the property is under surveillance work wonders. I hear a baseball bat wrapped with some barbed wire works pretty good. You can even name it
Alright_Art@reddit
Gotta be careful with that. The addition of barbed wire transforms it from a blunt object, which could be used for sports or non-lethal purposes, into something designed to cause serious harm or injury. This modification would classify it as a dangerous weapon in most legal and practical contexts.
Plastic-Collar-4936@reddit
If someone has taken an action that has caused me to raise and strike a blow with such an object, we are already in tenuous legal territory all around. In the context of prepper-grade societal downfall, the legality of a protective instrument is far outweighed by its lethality.

There are several good Dutch forums on air rifles, check them out. Enough hunters and preppers there.

For the bow work at getting skilled in the 10 to 20 meter range. Learn fast shoot vs olympic target shooting. You are goung to want to get several shots off fast if someone comes at you.
Practice axe throwing. Stick to under 10 meter. Probably best for around 5 meters. Practice a fast draw and throw. Best part of a hatchet is it has enough mass to hurt no matter how the strike lands.
Classes and practice. The best weapons is the one you know how to use. The best fighting style is whatever you can get a class for.

So I know absolutely nothing about Dutch “weapons” laws and honestly just don’t feel like doing any research on the subject. That said Cold Steel makes a few different spearheads that can be installed relatively easily on something as simple as a broom stick. Poll arms were a standard weapon for most armies across the world for millennia. I would also recommend joining a historical reenactment group to get some kind of training in how to use poll arms. Again, Iv don’t zero research into the laws or availability of these items I just know they exist. Good luck

I'm also in a place where firearms are not an option.
Archery is a legitimate sport, and it is possible here to get equipment for yourself. Crossbows are harder to get but you can track them down through the right channels. Hunting slingshots can also be procured through similar sources, shoot steel ball bearings.
Historical medieval arms and armour are used in sports like Buhurt and HMB, and you can usually get very battle worthy equipment from chainmail to brigandines to plate armour, and various medieval weaponry. Armour-wise, I can outfit two men to the level of a reasonable mid-range man-at-arms/knight of the 14th century. That's actually a lot of protection. These can also be worn over ballistic vests which I've also found available and have a handful of. Arms-wise, I could field two spearmen, four swordsmen, and four archers of varying types.

Looking at fishing bats too, bc they have a loop so youre less likely to hand it over accidentally. And slingshots. Possibly blow darts.
This is in australia, and strictly for the collapse of civil order.

America here. When I was married my wife had hornet spray in her nightstand. We kept out bedroom on the second floor of an extremely defensible stairway. I used a solid core door on our bedroom with locks that were rated for 1500#/pressure.
If I was home the issue was more of how we’d clean up the mess afterwards :)

Crossbows are great single shot weapons. Have a spear for backup.

Slingshot wirh plenty of spare bands, steel balls etc. You can get them on Amazon. My younger self would never believe me today.

I would second a lot of replies here saying air guns, bows, or any garden implement that’s roughly comparable to a spear.
But also consider non lethal weapons. A paintball gun loaded with pepper spray balls would be an extremely effective deterrent

madpiratebippy@reddit
Depends on you. Ranged weapons? Get a crossbow. Otherwise my favorite weapon is a 14-15th c style war hammer. My blacksmith made a bunch for the seals team that went into the caves looking for Bin Laden (he’s a super cool dude) because they’re mostly silent, never jam or run out of ammo, and they were designed to peel knights out of their armor like tin cans so they are still VERY effective against helmets and body armor.
However you have to learn how to use one and not a lot of people will. Still my favorite weapon.

Frankly guns work best as deterrents so you don't need real ones, especially if real ones are scarce in your area. You just need something that looks like a gun from enough distance (paint a semi-realistic water gun or BB gun if possible and confront people from an upstairs window or the roof or something).
Just to get ahead of the hate I'll say even real guns work best as deterrents, but of course a real one is preferable to a fake one. But for OPs situation this may work well enough. Otherwise I'd suggest long-handled tools or a cricket bat (baseball bat for us Yanks I think works better but whatever you can get). Or you can go full medieval and have a pot of boiling oil going next to your window.
chalor182@reddit
I didn't look at all the comments but one thing I didn't see (not sure about Netherlands legality) is a good old fashioned spear. It's the oldest weapon next to rocks and clubs for a reason. Something sharp on a 5 to 10 foot pole, depending on use case, is good defense and intimidating to both animals and people.

It would require you to be an active member of a club to continue your license. As in, you need to go every X week, need to do trainings, comply to checks at your home etc. Not really feasible for me.
chalor182@reddit
None of those are bad things unless you don't have the time or money, but it's understandable that you don't want to
unalive-robot@reddit
Can I ask why those things aren't feasible? Money? Locality?
Seruati@reddit
If you don't live near a club and have the free time/money to dedicate to keeping up with it, it's impossible. We wanted to get into shooting but our nearest shooting club is well over an hour away and we're not allowed to shoot at home, despite living on a 5 hectare farm.
U-47@reddit
Shooting guns without training is useless, those clubs can offer you courses, support, friendship, acces to all kinds of extra knowledge or second hand weapons but most importantly training.
Seruati@reddit
I am happy to do the training - we have even done two courses at said club and I did some shooting in the country I grew up in as well. I know how to shoot... What I would like now is to be able to peacefully and responsibly practice shooting as hobby, on my own terms, on my own property...
I don't want to be forced to socialise as part of this... and I am not looking for shooting to be a source of friendship or a support system. I can get that much closer to home and from other activities. I certainly don't need that sort of thing from a gun club that the law would force me to join that is a total pain in the arse to get to, not to mention expensive...
We have existing friends and contacts who would be happy to help us improve and there is even a gun shop in our nearest town that sells second hand guns of all types. But for some reason, even if we are licensed to have a gun, we are not allowed to use it or practice the hobby unless we drive two hours or so up to the nearest club (or, for some reason, if we want to 'practice' by shooting at living things for sport, which I don't trust myself to do without more practice).
I can't go to the club realistically because I have livestock to care for and dairy animals that need milking twice a day and we can't take long days away from the farm to do that sort of thing. Just not practical at all.
Laws like that make it unrealistic, if not actually impossible, for people like us who have a sensible interest in the hobby, and just want to quietly and introvertedly enjoy things on our own terms, without being forced to socialise and pay for the privilege.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
I shoot competitive action pistol. It's really at your own pace. If you want to wear athletic shoes, run fast, hose the targets down, and focus on shaving microseconds off your time, you can do that. If you want instead to focus on wearing what you would anyway, going slow, and pitting yourself against yourself, you can do that too. The general structure of IPSC, USPSA, IDPA, and other similar sports is that you shoot a set of stages at a match, and at the end, your overall time is calculated. The person with the lowest time places first, and so on. Generally at tier 1 matches, there no award ceremony or anything like that. You go home with the satisfaction of having spent the day shooting. You wouldn't generally be competing directly against other people in a tiered elimination system. Very few shooting sports are structured that way.
Another thing that competition provides is perspective. You get to see how other people solve a stage, how they shoot more efficiently, and so you get to pick up things from them which you can incorporate in your own training. For example, if you watch someone who has really good footwork, you'll start to understand how you should be pushing off when leaving a position, the position of your feet when landing in a position, when to take shorter steps, when to slow down, etc. Perhaps something that seems more applicable to shooting is how to transition from target to target, when to break your grip, and when to reload. All of this happens at your own pace.
Seruati@reddit
I can see your point, but I think what you're interested in is really different to what I'm interested in, and that's okay. The only issue is that what I like is just illegal in the country I live in...
All I want to do is sit up in my woodland on a nice day, by myself or with my partner, with a picnic maybe, and shoot some tin cans off a log and try and hit some paper targets. Literally just shoot the shit. It's relaxing.
I'm not interested in the 'sporting' aspect to the extent that what we're talking about are like two totally different activities. I do fencing as well, at a social club, where I worry about stuff like footwork and winning points. I don't want to do shooting in that kind of setting, in that kind of style. For me it's about being in nature and quiet enjoyment of a basic level of skill. But I think realistically I'm gonna have to look into archery instead as bows are legal for anyone.
ee-5e-ae-fb-f6-3c@reddit
Got it. We do have different goals. While the competitive settings I'm in are relaxed, it's not a lazy Sunday afternoon plinking by yourself. There is some structure, because structure is required to keep a squad/group running during a match.
ngyeunjally@reddit

U-47@reddit
Not in the Netherlands you can't.
ngyeunjally@reddit
You can do it, are capable of. You may not do it, are disallowed from.
SodamessNCO@reddit
You'll need to try to make that feasible, because all those other weapons you listed won't do you any good in a self defence scenario. The people you'll be defending yourself against will all have guns, even in NL.
Joining a club is much better than simply having a gun, defence in a SHTF scenario is a team effort. The Dutch Resistance operated in teams of like-minded people who coordinated with each other and the allies to undermine the occupying Germans. being in a club of other shooters and enthusiasts means that you'll have a network of people you can rely on should the worst happens.
It's also a good way for you to get structured training. Lots of Americans own guns, and many of us have infinite places to shoot them. It doesn't do a whole lot of good because most people don't train with them. Most just go out to the desert or the woods and shoot a pile of trash from 15ft away and don't even clean it up. Vast majority of them can't hit a target at 300m, most of the rifles aren't even zeroed.
You absolutely should get involved in a shooting club, get a license so you can legally own a gun and not go to prison or rely on some 15th century alternative.

Personally, I think blades are overrated as a “simple” defense weapon. The need for a sharp cutting edge (maintenance) and blade alignment (technique) mean that an average person picking up a machete for the first time is not as much of a threat as they would want to be in a self defense situation. There’s also the immediate lethality of a blade in terms of what happens if you do get a good cut or stab in. Without medical help, you’re very likely to kill the person you only meant to ward off if you catch them in the right spot, and the same goes for them to you if you were to be disarmed, which is a good chance if you’re not trained with the weapon and it devolves into a grapple. A blade is also undeniably a weapon meant to harm or kill if you’re in a situation where you might have to deal with legality after the fact.
For all these reasons, I like the idea more of blunt instruments for people as a prepped weapon. IMO they still can carry the same amount of intimidation factor, but have the benefits of being less lethal (which is a benefit for anyone who’s untrained and looking to only ward off attack from other people), more readily available, and a bit more plausibly deniable in court if you ever had to defend your actions. You should be able to fulfill all these benefits with something like a hammer, wrench, or tire iron. Less deniable, but you could also get the same results with a bat or length of pipe.

Bow and arrows for longer to mid range invaders. Takes practice but is fairly easy to master. I have both long bow and several recurve and plan to get a small compound.

Atlatl- mid to long range and very deadly once you can master it.
Sling shot- easy to learn, works for any thing from 5ft to 50ft with decent accuracy. They also have some sling shot metal bolts with a whisker attachment that are deadly. Basically cross bow bolts modified for sling shots. They also have arrows for fishing. For practice they have biodegradable mud balls then you get steel shot for when you really need it

You need something with range. Bow and arrow since you can't get a gun. As for close range get a machete and pry bar. Both are tools so get dual functions out of them. Good luck in the zombie apocalypse.
If you want it for home defense get the longest melee weapon you can reasonably wield in your house.. do you have an open layout, lots of hallways, etc.
Personal defense would be a knife, if that's legal. If knives are illegal get the most legal stabby pokey thing you can legally carry.
If you're a criminal you already know what to get.
For your own safety, avoid conflict if possible. When you can't avoid conflict, use the minimum force needed to end the conflict. Or legally you might become the bad guy, depends on where you live.

Fun-Brilliant2909@reddit
That's a great idea! A layered defense system like old castles, and construction tools. Excellent!
Ell_Jefe@reddit
My plan FWIW.
I have barricades on all my outside doors. They’re not impossible to get through, but the average burglar with no tools has almost no chance. It will slow them down enough to increase my reaction time and give me a huge tactical advantage.
I have 2 purebred German Shepards. The male has a bark that will shake your soul. The second someone knocks on my door or starts trying to break it down, the dogs run towards the door and go apeshit. That’s my Que to retreat to my bedroom.
I have a latch on my bedroom door that can be locked in a second and it’s rated for 1700 lbs of force. I also replaced all the screws with long deck screws. Without tools I don’t think anyone is getting through.
I keep an old cell phone plugged in to the wall where nobody would think to look for it. For calling 911. I have a Mossberg 590 and a Glock 22 but you could just replace that with a bat. I’m also lucky that I have perfect angles, cover, and concealment in my bedroom. If by some miracle they were able to get through the barricade, they wouldn’t see me until it was time for me to act.
One more thing I’d add is that I keep tools hidden in my room for getting free from most types of restraints, in case someone is able to get the drop on me. I have a (legally owned) handcuff key. Wire cutters in case they use zip ties. And a knife for cutting duct tape and defense. I also keep a last ditch handgun secured in a case, and keep the key hidden where nobody will think to look for it. You could replace that with a claw hammer.
I also practice and run practical scenarios through my head of things that could realistically happen. During a stressful home invasion, you don’t have time to formulate a plan in your head. You have to be able to act decisively in a split second.
Evade. Barricade. Arm yourself. Call 911. Be prepared to act.
Practice. Often. Practice some more.

Crossbow is an option, but the true deadlines of crossbowsamd bows in the Netherlands is diminished because only very basic arrowheads are legal.
PCP airguns are an option. The Netherlands has no powerlimits on airguns. Anyone over 18 can order it online. AEA zeus is a beast that has 2000 joule of muzzle energy (little more than ar 15 depending on cartridges), but its not practical for ad hoc defense.
A spear is a good option if no one else has a gun, but if they do its a sure way to get killed.
No good options for personal defense in the Netherlands. Build trust and friendship with your local community. Together you could stand strong and defend even against the odd asshole with a gun, Crossbow or a frigging spear. 😜

According Google, there is a hunting license exception to the ban on firearms in the Netherlands.
One of the main things I think about is if SHTF than access to food will be severely limited. In the right locations, hunting and preserving meat could be a life saving skill. Of course, owning, and knowing how to care for and use a firearm responsibly is also something that could be beneficial. It can be expensive to start making your own ammunition, but it's very do-able and costs a fraction of factory made ammunition. Of course, exercise lots of diligence and care. Don't get arrested or harm others unless you or your family's lives are in danger.
If I absolutely had to do something other than firearms, I'd recommend a strong door and locks, secure windows, and your own personal health and training. Just physical competence is something I see a lot of people lacking. After that, a bow can be deadly and silent. Maybe everyone in your family can practice target shooting with bows? Another thing is just self defense training that includes sparing. If done correctly, it can instill self discipline, character, as well as physical competency.
Cheers and let's hope/pray for generations of peace.

You make too many assumptions about self defense situations. Since we're in a sub for prepping, let's think about scenario where someone is trying to steal your stockpile. Even if they are armed, they're gonna try to take your stuff without a fight, because no one wants to actually fight for their food. If you set up your security we'll, you'll be able to see them coming and get yourself in a position to do something about it. Gaining the upper hand gives you the opportunity to prevent them from being able to kill you with their opening shots, giving you the opportunity to shoot back and end the threat. Guns aren't some magical "kill everything" stick. They are mechanic objects bound by the laws of physics, which mean they can be countered in many ways.

In my honest opinion the worse mass attack of all time was a knife attack in China.

You can use almost any tool as a weapon. However, any weapon is useless if the person wielding it doesn’t know what they’re doing. An average person can’t use a knife effectively, and knives are ubiquitous. So, my two cents - training. You can learn all kinds of things on the internet, but there is no substitute for actual experience and practice. If you know how to use a knife effectively, you will be able to use other sharp things. If you know how to move your body in a defensive and offensive ways, anything becomes a weapon. But honestly, I would put forth whatever effort necessary to obtain a firearm. Most things are illegal, but not all. Be the owner of the exception. A firearm is an exponential force multiplier, especially against someone who has nothing to lose.

Warrior post society and many others on YouTube discuss this. First, you should be the weapon, everything else is a tool. Second regarding home and property. Zones radiating from the most important with layers of security. The exterior is a hard barrier, with anti personal properties (ie buckthorn bushes with a ditch and hard fence). A large/ imposing gate/entrance (phycological factor that defines an area being separate from the rest. Distance and clear sight from fence to home. (No where to hide) Orderly and organized, plus signs of defensive positions and holds. These alone should deter 99.9% of threats. If it feels well planned and executed most people will avoid it.

Sharp tin shears - (exc) use? Cutting metal for a project or some sort of diy assembly. _- alongside the tin shears have the (usually one) tool to remove the center screw so now you have a pair of twin blades.
Lighter and a flammable aerosol can - (exc)use? Lighter for your smokes/campfire, axe body spray cuz I stink big dawg.
Just think long and hard and youll get creative. Anything, everything, is a weapon. You just have to put more work into some. Dont forget about blunt objects.

Bear spray as a primary and a long blunt object as a secondary(baseball bat, etc.). Don't get into a physical altercation. Prevent it. As a hunter, you get one one shot with a bow or crossbow before its useless. Also, sharp objects get stuck in soft tissue and become useless. This is survival, not combat. Plan for multiple attackers who also have weapons.

Duct taping kitchen knives to the end of broom handles would make a formidable spear.
An axe would be a decent option.
ShinigamiOverlord@reddit
Very close range, a hammer like 🔨 not ⚒️. Since the first type has a sharp edge one way. Inflicts more damage and makes you look crazy enough.
If lethal, crossbow is a decent choice. If you don't live alone then you can have 2 crossbows, one for you one for someone else to reload while you shoot. Bow needs a lot more work to handle proficiently.
Non lethal projectile, maybe?, is a modern slingshot with metal balls. They can do a lot of damage.
A lethal option hand held close range is an axe 🪓 or a hatchet. Something with a longer handle, but not too long. Good that you can handle with one hand and two hands.
Otherwise look into maximum legal knife size you can carry. Get that.
You can 3D print guns, but only one shots. Those were considered the "safer" option among the choices. I'd advise not to do so since there have been cases of gun blowing up if made incorrectly. Or so I've read.
You can make an IED, don't do that.
I recommend once again, slingshot with metal bearings.
You could probably carry a duty knife/builders knife/wood crafting knife by size.
Whatever you are gonna buy, buy it from a reputable source and make a deep dive into any possible problems they have.
Also any ranged weapon. Practice. Same goes for close ones too, but fbsg are hard to practice on.

PCP Airguns? I'm fairly certain they're legal in the Netherlands as long as you're over 18. They can be very deadly and good for home defense (hatsan blitz) or hunting (benjamin bulldog or a .50cal sniper rifle) only issues are they need charging with compressed air from a cannister, compressor or handpump aand limited on shots before you need to recharge. I did see they would ship to my country from NL but checking the local laws, PCP guns are not legal here :(

Based on your comment that illegal firearms are available, I guess it is safe to assume that some criminals are armed. The problem will never be the large majority - they will likely not be a problem for you. People who lack boundaries or easily foregoes them will be your biggest threat. Criminals, socio- och psychopaths hidden among us and the large number of people who have committed horrific things to survive before - in war, in abject poverty or while fleeing from their home. The last category can be good people that had to do bad things, but their threshold to act is still lower than someone who has been living all their lives in safety. The police have a high rate of psychopaths compared to most other groups in society and are armed as well. To summarize - all criminals and some police will be dangerous for you. Refugees from war torn countries will be quicker to react, and willing to act more decisive - which is often good and sometimes bad - for you.
Furthermore, freedom of movement in the EU will make it dangerous for you to assume everyone has the same preconditions as you, as people from other countries may move across borders or you be forced to move to another country. There are plenty of countries that allow AR15s, handguns etc. for sport and/or hunting within the EU, and as soon as the war in Ukraine ends - military hardware will flood the black market.
So, either get a firearm even if it is a hassle, or some running shoes and a bottle of lube. Shooting sports and hunting are great fun, so that gets my vote. Failing to run away from marauding war criminals aren't.
If you won't get a gun - go grey man and make sure you can hide any melee weapons on your person. Keep them small and deadly. Remember - a knife doesn't kill immediately, and an attacker might well off you before the effects of the wounds they suffered take effect.
And this is my last advice: Cooperate with friends and neighbors, keep a low profile, don't expose yourself to danger unnecessarily and help people if you can do it safely. This will help you a lot more than any weapon ever will.

I think the idea that preppers will need to fend off roving groups of bandits is an Americanized myth.
Case in point: look at the southeastern part of the US. They were just devastated by two once-in-a-century hurricanes a week apart. Whole blocks of home and businesses are just gone.
If that isn’t SHTF, nothing is.
Yet every story coming out of there is of communities coming together and everyone helping out.
If SHTF comes to you, that is what you will see. Unless you’re the selfish prick.
Get weapons to hunt with. They can double as self defense tools if needed, but understand they probably won’t.
actualsysadmin@reddit
There’s a big difference between a temporary displacement and a permanent one
No-Professional-1884@reddit
Are you suggesting that an entire building simply being gone isn’t permanent? Sure you can rebuild, but you can do that in any scenario you want to come up with. So is nothing permanent?
actualsysadmin@reddit
A building being gone or a city being gone is a localized disaster. Not a wide spread one (country wide).
The national guard generally upholds peace in these scenarios and establishes a curfew
No-Professional-1884@reddit
What is the difference to the person who just lost everything? Respectfully I feel like this is splitting hairs.
Also, the National Guard was not in many (any that I know of) of these communities and they all worked together fine.
There will always be bad actors. But what major disaster in the past 50 years has taken place and we also had a widespread security issue?
I can’t think of one.
IMO this myth of Mad Max roving bands after any SHTF issue is only perpetuated by people that benefit from people believing it. The gun sellers and tactical trainers and others.
If you see what everyday people do during these situations then you see that it’s all just smoke and mirrors.

In the UK we never, ever carry a weapon or item for self-defence. Police will use weasel words to try to get people to admit to that crime and carrying anything that looks like a gun, or weapon of any kind can result in unwanted attention from armed police. Having said that they won't usually come in all guns blazing but you will be lying face down in the mud whilst they shout at you.
We can however have tools and sporting equipment. And sensible reasons for owning these items.
I joined an archery club and have two bows and a large selection of interesting arrow heads.
My ex-wife and I used to play baseball together. I still have a selection of bats. I also have photos of us playing together, mitts and balls.
I have a very nice air-rifle and loads of pellets. I bought an air-pistol so I could give a rat a second shot, just to be kind. I bought a second air-pistol that turned out to be an American one that may fire at a much higher velocity than a UK legal one. Of course i will surrender it if I ever find the information I need on that. I find that these can be carried discretly in fishing tackle bags.
I was into gardening and have several machetes and knives
I also have protective clothing against bullets but mostly against thrown objects and close-contact bladed weapons. I have two sets of everything a UK police officer would be equipped with for a riot, including a full-length riot shield from the Netherlands. These are not illegal to own but most of my protective clothing would be worn under loose clothing to hide it in public. The best defence is don't be where the trouble is happening and don't draw unwanted attention to yourself or your property.
Things would be extremely bad if I was leaving home with this equipment but some items could be used for lesser troubles. I do have other items beyond what is mentioned here.
I am a political activist and do get practice with defensive items. The local police know where I live and I am on hate lists on social media.
The approaches and entrances to my home are defended and secure. Six police officers with a metal ram failed to get into my home. They would have got in eventually but lesser equipped baddies would do no better.

What are your antique laws? Sometimes you can still own firearms as long as it was produced before a certain date or is a muzzle loader. So if antique rifles are allowed in your area you could get a 1874 fusil gras and get a 410 shotgun slug sub caliber conversion or the same thing with a vetterelli 1870/87 with a sub caliber converter for 44 magnum, you could also just get a antique revolver because 6 outdated shots are better than none. But if none of that is achievable i suggest a bow/crossbow for range. Molotovs and thermite are childs play to make and for melee a good knife for defence and a tool is irreplaceable. As for a main melee weapon for legal reasons a tool like a fireman axe, sledgehammer, shovel, garden spike. I prefer a well made sword of quality steal or a durable blunt weapon like a baseball bat.

There are still plenty of options such as directly under firearms would be high pressure air guns, then compound/crossbow/bows under that then you dip into slingshots and slings (if you have the skill for that)
Then after you run out of ranged weapons that's where you get into simple melee weapons. The most historically common weapon would be a spear/pike but they are generally only used outdoors.
Sword would be cool but there are far too many poor quality wall hangers available today and takes far more training to use effectively than most people realize.
After than you got axes, machetes and large fixed blades. Axes are intimidating but harder to hit a moving target with so I'll always recommend the most blade length like a machete.

Bows and Arrows (35 to 45 lbs.), great for hunting and self-defense as long as you see them coming and in that case knives or long knives for close in hand-to-hand combat if need be.
The best thing to do if not in a direct conflict is to simply fade into the background unless they are really a clear and present danger, injuries that can be treated properly are just as deadly, and a slow death from them is very painful.

Think of the environment you may be fighting in, and gear towards distance and manoeuvrability. Slingshot or bow for longer range but be prepared to learn to string bow, reload slingshot quickly and under pressure. Pepper spray for short to medium range or other irritant if pepper is illegal, although if you can get it who cares. Close range think knives, hatchets, but always appear unassuming so you don't look as though you may be armed. Also carry a first aid kit, apart from being extremely useful they help to explain away cutting implements.

It’s very sad to hear everyone talking about how they are not allowed to own real firearms. Your governments don’t give or take these rights from you, they are natural rights given to you at birth. Now with the flood of illegals, It’s important to be able to defend your family. Some countries are already in SHTF, especially from what I see happening in France and England.

This is an excellent argument for things like the 2nd amendment though , without it people are forced to imagine scenarios where they are defending themselves with medieval weapons or kitchen knives or garden tools … much more gruesome and frankly dangerous than simple safe firearms. Good luck friend.

I’m not sure which id rather defend myself from. Maybe a gun here and there but mostly medieval weapons if SHTF, or high powered guns that can take me out from far away - if SHTF or right now when I go to school lol
This-Rutabaga6382@reddit
Have you fought with medieval weapons before ? Have you fought with any weapon that takes you standing toe to toe with someone and bashing them ? It’s brutal and a huge drain on energy to say the least. That’s basically my only point in SHTF you don’t want to be fighting at all let alone hand to hand combat. And something like a small 22lr can be a simple game changer that whether you want it or not should be easily accessible to people of any country.

And I admit I am talking out my ass....
Spears and pole arms were popular with armies for a long time.
Easy to make. You can even sharpen a long stick.
For a better point, find a fixed blade knife, kitchen knife, or make one with some good steel (e.g., leaf spring from car, woodworking chisel) or even crappy mild steel.
Then affix it to the end of a suitable pole with, idk, epoxy and wrapped with Paracord or using hose clamps?
The pole could be a mop, broom, garden tool handle, window washing pole, whatever.
A trench shovel is already narrow and can be sharpened.
Even better a dandelion weeding tool. Tip is small and pointy already. Five or ten minutes with an angle grinder to sharpen et voila, you got an insta-spear.
Any clublike thing. Baseball bat or equivalent. Your spear or any long pole can be a staff. (Of course everything I learned about quarterstaffs I learned from Daffy Duck...)

The best weapon in your arsenal is your mind. Practice mindfulness of your surroundings and knowing when a situation is likely to occur is more valuable than packing heat. In places where guns are legal it’s still such a risk to be involved in a dangerous situation that it is way better to simply not be in it to begin with. I have my concealed carry permit (not that I really need it in my location but it’ll be nice if I leave the state) and I only really carry if I’m walking late at night or going to Walmart

Firearms. Turns out, DIY guns aren't as challenging as you may think. The real challenge is DIY ammo. If you can access potassium nitrate or sodium nitrate, it won't be too difficult; just tedious. Too tedious for my taste, really.
Option number B: airguns. Exactly what you think it is. Guns powered by compressed air.
https://youtu.be/LY8_L-QMw74?feature=shared
https://youtu.be/9ZNJZwTqzvA?feature=shared
These you can also build yourself. Which is something I'm working on. In fact, I'm trying to figure out a trigger mechanism right now as we speak. (It's kinda working). Ironically, building an air gun is harder than building an actual gun.
Next up: repeating crossbow:

https://youtu.be/IyVBJo3POGQ?feature=shared
https://youtu.be/CSwDvoGZElk?feature=shared
https://youtu.be/QWFtFKFZfzY?feature=shared
Yeah; there's a whole lot of options out there and there's no bloody way I could include even a fraction of them so I strongly recommend you do you own little deep-dive into this topic. The long story short on repeating crossbows is that many can be home made, especially with a 3d printer. Many can use both rubber or actual crossbow limbs. Plenty are quick firing. And if you've got sharp broad-heads, it takes very little power to do some damage.

https://www.justis.nl/producten/wet-wapens-en-munitie/wapenverlof-of-jachtakte-aanvragen
You can become a member of a gun club (recommended if you own firearms), go shooting regularly (recommended when you own a firearm), learn about the weapon and the legislation (also recommended) and then you can own a gun legally at home.
Or you can become a hunter officially. Do some research or contact your polics, just never say you want the gun for self defence just sport shooting.

A bow of some sort. Before the invention of the lever action rifle native americans still preferred to use their short bows as they could get more shots off. In general, you will need something for hunting as well. Depending on skills, I would suggest a compound bow or crossbow. That at least gives you some self-defense capabilities.
And remember that, in a societal collapse scenario, what is legal and illegal will quickly become irrelevant. A crossbow, while limited, can be used for the step up to the next level, once those less law abiding individuals start coming out to play.

20 years in a career related industry has taught me one thing. Anything can be a weapon if you dream with it under that pretext
Ymareth@reddit
What would the purpose of the weapon be? Hunting? Killing people? Would you be willing to take on the practice needed to be proficient in any weapon you choose? If you are going to hunt in a SHTF scenario you'd want to hunt efficiently for example. If you see the need of killing people, in what circumstances would that be an option? Maybe have a chat with some soldiers who have actually been in life or death situations before you do down that route. Are you even fit enough to actually do what those soldiers did? Also, what killing could you actually avoid simply by working actively for a more tight knit community where you live? Before you actually get a weapon to tote around, you should consider these parts.
Personally I'm much better off building community than attempting some sort of vigilate shtick.

A lot of people probably undervalue training and fitnes as well as other important tools, provisions and skills ... but firearms are incredibly valuable

muxxy3102@reddit
Great point on undervaluing training. That’s the one thing I’d add to this discussion, great to have something, but if you don’t train it and train in a stressful way with the fitness to do so ( do 30 second of jumping jacks, etc before you take a shot or fire a bow) it’s easy to be a liability.
jammin_jalapeno27@reddit
You can get a semi auto rifle. The FGC9 MK2 was created just for you. You just need a 3D printer and VPN. You can also create ammo by reloading it yourself (a same team designed the process for ammo).
Obviously you might not be comfortable doing something so illegal, there’s always a risk you’ll get caught, but the risk is only in you breaking operational security. But it’s an option.

I say go for it. It’s a fun hobby and sport. I’m not in the Netherlands anymore but I fell in love with the hobby and ended up prepping as a result.
I’m in 3 clubs, 1 federation, I compete in 4 categories. Pistols aside I hunt, compete in clays and reload my own rounds. It’s a wonderful world where you can constantly improve a skill. Well worthwhile in Europe, the sooner the better as the laws get tighter constantly but most of the time they’ll grandfather stuff in.
If it’s not for you, spear or cross bow, but you’ll be defenseless against anyone who has a firearm or if you find yourself out numbered. I don’t know about blackpowder laws in Nl, over here they’re pretty lax and a 6 shot cap and ball is better is than most alternatives.

A co worker was outraged a local cop shot someone coming towards him with a sharpened stick once. I said a lot of people have been killed with those over the years... She's says oh I must have missed that( sarcastically), who? I said like Greeks, Romans... And got a laugh, but seriously, a big Sharp edge blade on a stick gives you reach before they get to you and is proven over millennia. Cold steel makes a zulu spear I think that would be useful indoors I think, for jabbing and slashing two handed. If you get the crossbow, it would be a good backup. If you have nothing else, what about a big sharp chef knife maybe taped onto a piece of mop handle?
Maybe an axe or garden tool with a long sharp blade to have reach and not be as easy to take away from you.
Do you have sports that use a bat like cricket or baseball?.
You could try and find some martial arts classes for armed and/or unarmed arts, but remember basically you are the weapon, the tools are just an extension. You must be prepared to fight or they'll just take it away from you.
Sorry, if that sounds too dramatic lol, I feel kinda corny now, but it's true.

You'll just need to know your local laws and what their intended to encompass. As far as I know, self-defense of all kinds is illegal in the Netherlands, and if something isn't specifically banned, it might still be a felony to use in defense
What you need is usually the equalvielent of anything that might be used against you when the people are generally peaceful. You need more if people generally aren't and less the more peaceful people are, but at the same time, the more peaceful people are, the more likely something lesser will be more trouble until it's been bad for awhile

Honestly? I personally would get into historical collecting. A crossbow is great, slow to reload, but you can have it cocked. A mace hits just as hard as they used to. Or if you want to be fancy, you could learn to use a sword.
The_TesserekT@reddit
For some reason in The Netherlands, catapults are illegal, but crossbows are not. Crossbows nowadays are no longer slow to reload perse. There are fast repeating pistol crossbows like the EKArchery Revo7. You can do 7 powerful shots in under 4 seconds.
However keep in mind that certain type of arrow heads (like broadheads etc.) that are illegal.

I'm keeping my firearms
mementosmoritn@reddit
A firearm that can't be tracked back to you.
If you mean legally, then a bow, crossbow, or sling.
CartoonistRelevant72@reddit
Firearms still. Obviously criminals don't care. Why should I?
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
Because chances I’ll end up in jail are considerable bigger than that that firearm would be the thing to save me in case when SHTF.
CartoonistRelevant72@reddit
I'm thinking also that jail and/or law enforcement officers will be sorely pressed with other matters in a shtf scenario.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
Yes most likely so, but right now that isn’t the case. So if I get an illegal firearm at this moment, it would potentially do more harm than it could potentially do good.
tyrenanig@reddit
Like what’s prepping for if it lands you in prison first lol
Rvplace@reddit
Obeying the laws become less important when government takes away law abiding citizens right to protect themselves. It’s comical to me that the govt would choose this pathway to their destruction. If you know anything about history, governments disarm its people prior to mass actions against its very own citizens. Stop paying taxes is the first action against the govt

Big bore air rifle.
Everyone should have a few air rifles regardless. They don’t need gunpowder, and .22 caliber can be more powerful than a .22lr. Cheap as hell ammo to stock up on for an emergency firearm.
And then a .357-.45 air rifle is good for taking big game.
No different than a regular rifle, except no regulations. Buy em up before they get regulated out of existence!

Slingshot/Bow and arrow
Particular-Try5584@reddit
Are slingshots illegal? Cross bow? Bow? Some of these are illegal (as well as unregistered guns) where I live…
I’m getting pretty nasty with a stick… if someone is close enough for me to whack them I am pretty confident I have more chance of hitting them hard enough to break something with some degree of accuracy… than they do of hitting my dodging moving body with a tiny bullet.
Stick vs gun is not a fight I want to be in, but I live in a part of the world where most people won’t have guns if SHTF, so I thought I’d learn a few improvised weapons too… and a good whack with a stick can really do some damage if it’s in the right place. As can a good tackle, and some well placed kicks and blows.
If I am wanting to do damage at a distance I’m looking at it being much harder, most projectile weapons here are illegal. I can have a bow if I am learning it as a sport (do not have to be part of a club). But compound bows are regulated largely. I can’t do throwing knives, nunchucks, spear fishing/gidgees, slingshots, crossbows etc. It’s a challenge, but having a hobby is a good start ;)
UnfinishedThings@reddit
Im in the UK, so again no firearms. I have a slingshot and steel ball bearings. Light, quick and easy to reload and can do a hell of a lot of damage. Its quite intimidating as well Downside is that you do need to practice and the rubber straps do degrade after a while
dirtyoldbastard77@reddit
Just join a sports shooting club and get a lisence to buy a gun?
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
It would require you to be an active member of a club to continue your license. As in, you need to go every X week, need to do trainings, comply to checks at your home etc. Not really feasible for me.
dirtyoldbastard77@reddit
Well, that its not feasible for you right now doesnt mean its not an option. How about guns for hunting?
Fun-Brilliant2909@reddit
It's a good idea to prep for the range (0m to 1000m), and non-lethal to lethal.
If firearms are not allowed, not even hunting shotguns and rifles, than perhaps weapons, like: pre-charged pneumatic (PCP) rifles, atl atls, slingshots, crossbows and compound bows and traditional bows, shepherds sling, throwing sticks/rocks and boomerangs, catapults, pneumatic cannons, and pellet/BB guns.
Handheld weapons with range, like polearms: spears, staffs, halberds, poleaxes.
Flexible weapons, like chains, ropes, scarfs.
Short-range weapons, like: brass knuckles, sticks, rocks, knives/machetes/swords/daggers, bats/canes/pipes, flails, ink pens, magazines, tire thumpers, stun guns, pepper spray (bear spray is a weaker formula), cats eyes self-defense, monkey fist, duct spun into rope/string.
Remote and passive weapons: sensors, drones, lights, cameras, traps (deadfall, windsor, figure-4, covered pit), and remote explosives (firecrackers, pressure bottles).
Deterrents, like dogs, mules, emus, breeding bull/sire/stud.
Early warning, like dogs, mules, sheep, goats.
leisurechef@reddit
Crossbow is definitely a good choice but they don’t like being stowed in the “cocked” position as it damages the limbs.
Thus you will need to factor cocking & fitting the bolt before discharge.
ThisOneTimeAtKDK@reddit
Berna, Pepperball, or Taser. They’re the police’s “less lethal” stuff here. It all hurts like hell and will disable someone with the quickness but that’s just it. Disables and allows them to arrest or you to get away.
Icy-Ad-7767@reddit
Are bows/cross bows considered firearms? If not get one. Then there is the illegal options, i mention this in passing not suggesting it.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
No I can get bows! So that might be a good option. Illegal firearms wouldn’t be an issue to obtain for me, but the risk of acquiring and keeping them would be not worth it. Could ruin my whole future, house and career wise.
Icy-Ad-7767@reddit
I know a broad head on hunting arrow/bolt will punch through many “bullet proof” vests it will take steel or ceramic plates to stop them. Shocked the heck out of the police officers as well. Story, I guy I went to school with and I had a debate on would an arrow penetrate a vest, I said yes he said no, so he found one and I took a shot with my 80lb pull cross bow from 50 o so meters and punched through the vest 🤣
Gizm082@reddit
I live in Sweden. As soon i step into the wild, aka the houses and residents are gone and it's just me and nature, i put on my hunting knife and onehanded wildlife axe.
I can't carry any kind of firearm/weapon just because i am in nature. IF i was a hunter, i need to stay on my pass/tower and can walk back and forth my rifle.
But as a civilian the only protection is hikingmaterial/gear. A fixed blade knife, no Dundee/Rambo style, and an axe. But to use those as a weapon against another human being would result in severe prisontime unless i can prove selfdefense. Same goes for being in my home. Even if i had a licens for huntingrifles, i can't just use them even if someone breaks in. So live off-grid and waaaaaaaaaay out from villages/cities.

Bow and knives. I have a long bow that I can take down a deer with one good shot. Easy to move with and easy to reload as long as you have arrows. In a World without firearms, the Bow will be the weapon to be worried about.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)
Thanks for your advice! A long bow, or pretty much any bow other than a crossbow, take quite some practice to master though, right? Is it something you practice with regularly to keep your skill on a decent enough level?
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
Yes and no. Hear me out.
The hardest part was building up the strength and muscle memory for the weight of the bow. Unlike a compound bow or crossbow, YOU are holding all that weight in your hand. So you need to build that. Thankfully, in the modern world that we live in, you can easily get a Bow Resistance Trainer. I picked that link so you could easily see what I am talking about since I bought mine from the US based Amazon site.
Once you have the strength and muscle memory, you obviously need to practice aim and accuracy. I originally started by practicing for 20-30 minutes a day with a little longer on the weekends. I started getting pretty good after a few weeks. Then I started with some basic drills and running and shooting. Good alright with that.
Now I practice about 20-30 minutes a couple of times a week just to keep up the skill. Last Fall I got a Raccoon right through the head. It was an instant death with an arrow right through the skull. I was pretty happy with it.
BoerZoektVeuve@reddit (OP)

CXavier4545@reddit
what would you say is an effective distance for a deer with a bow?
TheSensiblePrepper@reddit
A lot of factors are involved but I wouldn't take a shot at more than 40 yards. 30 yards is pushing it for me.
JASHIKO_@reddit
Yes you need to practice a lot and regularly. You also need to know how to make arrows correctly.
It's not as easy as a firearm but a lot more rewarding of a hobby as well. I would suggest a take down recurve though to be honest.

Consider having the material to make a weapon instead.
A good bloom stick, a sharp kitchen knife and some duck tape can make a nice spike.
Test the process and weapon durability, then unbuild it.

Can't go wrong with a good Kukri blade. They're big and more menacing than just a machete.
Shoukd go without saying, but learning to use it is paramount to it's effectiveness as a self defense weapon. You're as likely to cut yourself as your opponent just wielding it all willy nilly.

I just took a quick Look at Netherlands gun laws, and it looks like it’s possible to get a gun for hunting if you pass some sort of exam.
The second best weapon would be a bow and arrow. In many ways this is better than a gun in SHTF, since you can make your own arrows.

If tasers weren't generally illegal for normal people there, I would habe just recommended a taser and learning how to do grapple because you can handle even disproportionate threats if you know how to deny someone the use of force and have a way to drop someone bigger than you
I don't know if I'd want to use a bow or improvised weaponry if I'm ever in a situation I can't handle with cheap shots/punts or wrestling for control. Hunting guns are made for quick, clean kills that won't give anyone nightmares if you use vitals/catch a nerve, and self-defense cartridges are made for quick clean knockdowns most people can easily recover if their given immediate help when you don't go for a vital

A quick look at the Dutch laws, and what a mess.
Honestly I would have to dig up a good cane/walking stick. Maybe go over to Ireland and get a decent blackthorn cane. Cause of my bad knee.
Then start studying Bartitsu. For the “historical purposes”.
On top of that, I would want a decent folding knife with a locking blade. That covers the day to day.
Are there any historical reenactment groups near you? These would give you a valid reason to have a mace, a flail, a falchion, all sorts of medieval weapons.
