Is this the only time on TNG that someone unzips their uniform’s zipper?

From S1E2 “The Naked Now”. I can’t recall another time where someone is partially out-of-uniform.
henryeaterofpies@reddit
Janeway has some action sports bra with a big gun moments in Voyager
spatula-tattoo@reddit
There was that time Ro unzipped the front of the uniform top that, moments before, didn’t have a zipper
Theborgiseverywhere@reddit (OP)
Yeah and her communicator magically appeared on the tank top she had on underneath! I went back and watched and they edited it weird so you never see it unzip

Gene was opposed to clothing having visible fasteners. So they did everything they could to conceal them if they were in use. That’s part of why civilian clothing in that era was inconsistent.
I don’t think we see fasteners on screen until we get to Picard. You’ll also notice that the civilian wear looks a lot better in that series too.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
Picard had that sweet suede jacket in the late seasons of TNG.
And this no visible fastener thing led to some major moose knuckles.
Abject_Buy3587@reddit
Ever notice picard always pull downward on his suit empatically....in damn near every episode? The wasnt picard, that was patrick steward hating how uncompfortable the amish space uniforms were
katharsister@reddit
Yeah I always got the sense that the uniforms/costumes fit terribly and were not super comfortable
Glacier2011@reddit
The ones from the first two seasons were he’ll. That’s why the change to the collared ones in season 3
rockdash@reddit
And that was if it was made for you in the first place, never mind if you were getting somebody else's secondhand uniform.
Previously_a_robot@reddit
Amish uniforms got me. 😆

I always wondered why Troi was the only one not in uniform or had a uniform completely different from everyone else’s. They all had dual color but she was either wearing that lavender thing or the blue suit/dress thing (which I liked but it didn’t seem “regulation”.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
They mentioned at some point that she was given permission to wear civilian clothes and it helped her role as counselor. In the episode with Jelico (where Picard is captured by the Cardassians), Jelico insists that she wear the standard uniform. After he leaves she decided to confine continue wearing the standard uniform.

I (personally) don't like the jacket, but I LOVE the later DS9/TNG Film uniform and believe with no evidence that the design process literally goes TNG uniform -> Picards Jacket -> DS9 2.0

My favorite thing about this is in the episode Masterpiece Society the colonists who've been isolated from the Federation for generations have bulky obvious fasteners on their clothing.
brachus12@reddit
sounds like Lucas’ aversion to underwear

A 1990s television can only take so much intense sapphic vibe before the tube explodes

Malnurtured_Snay@reddit
That's because clothing technology has changed too
CaptainHunt@reddit
Yeah, they switch between her normal rear-zip uniform and the upper half of one of the old jumpsuit uniforms.
gwhh@reddit
As far as I can remember. Yes.
pgm123@reddit
I don't remember this. That's great. Is there a clip online?

Fascinating
TheHYPO@reddit
Moments before, it was a one-piece jumpsuit.
Regono2@reddit
Wow I literally just finished watching this episode 10 minutes ago 😂
Max_Danage@reddit
I’m note sure if that was a moment of show don’t tell for their uniforms being high tech or a production goof that nerds like me retconned into being a moment of show don’t tell.
Zealousideal-Solid88@reddit
In their defense, they made like 30 episodes a season.

One of Gene’s rules for costume design on his shows was that the future wouldn’t have visible fasteners. No buttons, zippers, snaps, etc. could be visible. That’s why so many costumes from that era were actually one pieces and could be quite complicated to put on and take off.
BigConstruction4247@reddit
He sure had some weird expectations of the future.
Everyone will be fed, and no one will be petty.
"Sounds good"
Clothing will have no visible fasteners.
"OK. That seems odd."
ElectroMagnetsYo@reddit
Everyone in the future wears pull-over hoodies and sweatpants all day :)
BigConstruction4247@reddit
Except it's unitards that are three sizes to small.
HandsomePaddyMint@reddit
Yeah, I’m trying to puzzle out the possible philosophy behind that. I’m guessing it was just that it was visual shorthand for “future clothes” to reinforce the idea that the setting was very different from modernity and lacked utilitarianism. Similar to how leather and fur was often used to denote brutish, violent, and animalistic people and species, belts, buckles, and other such functional items were predominantly seen on non-Federation individuals.
whatsbobgonnado@reddit
velcro all day!
International-Bed453@reddit
No pockets either.
owlpellet@reddit
Did they even have zippers after they switched to two-pieces? The season one Space Onesie was, uh, special.
AllThingsSmitty@reddit
There are some examples of front-zipping uniforms with the Eisenhower collars. Like...a lot! https://startrekcostumeguide.com/tng-uniforms/tng-jumpsuit/costume-analysis/season-3-onward/zipper-closures/
lukethe@reddit
Holy shit. The guy who wrote that UNIFORMS.
TheHYPO@reddit
It's not an Eisenhower collar, it's a Mandarin collar.
The jumpsuits with front zippers are S1-2 uniforms that they retrofitted to replace the yokes/collars so they didn't waste the old uniforms.
HandsomePaddyMint@reddit
Thank you for pointing this out. People often give me funny looks when I use the term Mandarin collar and I have to defend myself by explaining that’s just what it’s called, there isn’t another term for it.
strangway@reddit
That’s the most comprehensive catalog of Trek costumes I’ve ever seen.
TheHYPO@reddit
Yeah, that site is amazing
owlpellet@reddit
Spectacular piece of deep dive fandom linked there.
Theborgiseverywhere@reddit (OP)
In S3 the zippers (for main cast) were moved to the back but there were always zippers.
SirStocksAlott@reddit
Which makes one wonder, how did they dress themselves every day?
strangway@reddit
The zippers have tiny motors in them. They’re self-sealing Starfleet uniforms.
bts@reddit
And they make the same noise as the doors. Which has led to some epic misunderstandings
HandsomePaddyMint@reddit
I always assumed they had some kind of zipper buddy system.
Apx1031@reddit
Exocomp in later seasons.
owlpellet@reddit
Rear zipper really knocks down the sex appeal. On a top anyway.
Theborgiseverywhere@reddit (OP)
Only other time I can think is in Ensign Ro when Ro takes off her uniform jacket and has a tank top under it, buts it’s edited so you only really see her hand over the jacket.
BigManBakes79@reddit
B’lanna Torres did it ALL THE TIME on Voyager.
Dirt290@reddit
You mean on-screen right??
Because Riker's unzipped that zipper of his a few times..
rseery@reddit
Damn. Came here to say this exact thing. Reddit never disappoints.

Fun Fact: The season 1 uniforms were specifically discontinued/changed due to the fact that they were causing the cast major back/neck issues since the one piece uniforms were basically pulling down on their bodies from the shoulders.

rockdash@reddit
Oh my god, I never noticed it, but did they really give Bev a special "Gene is horny and wants to see some G rated woman flesh" zipper uniform?
Historyp91@reddit
It's definetly a scene where I would have no objections if it went down further.
No for real if Crusher and me were hoped up on the horny virus I'm giving in.

Gene Roddenberry saw into the future, and he knew we’d need some super goofy, memeable moments. (Yeah I have no clue, it’s the single weirdest part of the first season.)

mattroch@reddit
Dude, I'd tots go lower decks and deep v the uniform and roll up those sleevies to show off the forearms. Oohhh, yeah.
HandsomePaddyMint@reddit
I could swear there was at least one episode where everyone got really warm and zipped down a bit.
TheHYPO@reddit
In "The Price" (I think), Troi starts to take down her back zipper to undress before getting called to the Wormhole reception.
Unit_79@reddit
Never happened.
