Those too lazy to grow it will just buy it on the black market, and organised crime will gain all the profits whilst billions in taxation. 🤷♂️
You've not thought this one through, have you?
Weaponized_Puddle@reddit
Mandate everyone grows at least 5 tobacco plants in their backyard so home grown outcompetes black market
Dextrofunk@reddit
This is the real idea. Ban tobacco sales and force everyone to grow it.
mortywita40@reddit
Doing it with weed didn't drop the Jersey pricing
Sad-Refrigerator-839@reddit
Home grow is not allowed and it is taxed like crazy. I could get one gram of thc diamonds for like a hundred bucks or see my guy and get an 1/8th for 60 of the same. Fuck them lol
poop-machines@reddit
That's due to tax.
Funny enough, after prohibition ended, you could still get alcohol cheaper from the black market. And at first people did buy alcohol illegally. But with time, the easy accessibility, and the efficiency, of big business alcohol won out.
I'm guessing the same will be true for weed, given time.
phunkjnky@reddit
When MA first when legal, my black market connect was cheaper. Now legal is cheaper, though if I'm a stickler for quality, then black market is the way to go.
Zapper42@reddit
Damn ozs can be found for $60 here out the door
Zapper42@reddit
I don't think home growing is even allowed there, certainly not 'forced' upon everyone lol
Boxadorables@reddit
That'll keep it out of kids hands lol
warm_rum@reddit
The real crazy idea is always in the comments
poop-machines@reddit
And then kids start smoking it because it's literally everywhere
kaoh5647@reddit
Next to the poppies and marijuana and coca leaves
pheddx@reddit
Where would everyone get a "backyard" from then? Mandate mandatory backyards for everyone? I mean... where would those even go? We'd have to tear down every second building to squeeze them in.
Perhaps communal backyards on rooftops and stuff though.
Weaponized_Puddle@reddit
If you don’t have a backyard you need to buy grow lights and have a grow operation in your closet. If you live in a studio with no closet you need to grow in your bathtub.
Red9Avenger@reddit
Oh no, there's mold growing in my apartment now from the humidity, guess I'm gonna need a new place to stay until it's been properly cleaned and fungicided, at my landlord's expense, of course, since this happened due to the maintenance of something I'm legally required to have rather than my own negligence
pheddx@reddit
Where then do I put my weed growing operation? Didn't think of that, did you
capsaicinintheeyes@reddit
Here at Phillip Morris, we've already got a draft amendment to the bill providing for "acre offsets" to be rented to city dwellers I'll be sending it over as soon as the Ghostbusters gets here and clear me a path through the spirits of the dead to my fax machine.

Want your own meth. Make it yourself!
PurePetroleum@reddit
Bro this is Crazy ideas not well thought out out ideas
Luke_Nukem_2D@reddit
Bro this is Crazy ideas, not ideas that several countries are already looking into, with some already starting the process.
SearchingForanSEJob@reddit
How much effort to find and buy from a plug vs. growing it yourself?
Luke_Nukem_2D@reddit
About as much as buying cannabis vs growing it yourself. Vast majority just buy.
Same for tobacco already, I suppose. It would be more cost effective to grow your own, but it would be terrible and more labour intensive.

Banning tobacco sales is hardly a 'crazy idea', though. Is it? Several places are discussing the idea. Some, such as the UK, have already started the process.
I don't recall any country talking about banning the cultivation of tobacco plants, though.

il798li@reddit
Or, OP thought it through and realized how crazy it was
entredeuxeaux@reddit
wait until OP learns about prohibition
spartyanon@reddit
Not just about laziness. Most of the country would NOT be able to grow it. All the people living in apartments or that rent. All the people that don't live in a good climate for it.
ExaminationDry8341@reddit
Another option is to only allow unadulterated tobacco to be sold.
All that can legally be sold is whole leaf tobacco.
teachthisdognewtrick@reddit
There will be a lot more cigar smokers.
Belrial556@reddit
That worked so well when we bamned Alcohol, and again with Marijuana. Such an epic idea.
thebipeds@reddit
We should make crime illegal.
FloraMaeWolfe@reddit
Banning stuff never works. If it did, the so-called "war on drugs" wouldn't have been such a total failure.
Humans like to get high/drunk/messed up/whatever. They will do so no matter what the law says. All banning something does is move the power from the open to the black market and funds violence and crime. The product also tends to be bad.
Firm_Ambassador_1289@reddit
So do other animals like getting fucked up
FloraMaeWolfe@reddit
Of course, animals are known to seemingly purposely consume fermented fruits to get drunk out of their minds. Squirrels are really bad about this.
Sloppy2nd@reddit
Stop trying to control others behavior based on your own “morals”
xombiemaster@reddit
So we’re keeping the old weed dealers in business by changing the crop?
castlite@reddit
Better ban alcohol too then, and weed where it’s available.
bren0ld@reddit
One thing this will definitely do is hurt the economy and raise unemployment
willworkforjokes@reddit
Perhaps start with no subsidized federal crop insurance for tobacco farming.
guynumber20@reddit
I guess it’s true those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Look up prohibition pea brain.
Quick_Lavishness_689@reddit
i dont really understand why you would want to do that?
Parzivull@reddit
As long as they ban the sale of alcohol at the same time. Then if you want to drink have to make a distillery.
FortWendy69@reddit
This is approximately what happens in New Zealand.
mptpro@reddit
How 'bout we stop banning stuff.
_good_bot_@reddit
This is basically what we do with every single illegal drug... Works great, don't it?
ShamefulWatching@reddit
The difference is actual smokers don't enjoy it, we hate it.
impartlycyborg@reddit
Then ban alcohol saies?
Alfred456654@reddit
Switzerland does that with cannabis. 100% legal to grow and smoke at home.
mblguy76@reddit
Sounds just as stupid as "ban tampons". If you want one, grow the cotton yourself. 🤦♂️
ChewingOurTonguesOff@reddit
Indigenous populations in America are going to make bank.
Muskrat986@reddit
Counter point, adults are allowed to make their own decisions as long as they aren’t harming others. Wanna smoke? Okay, just don’t smoke indoors with other people or blow it in their face. Wanna be a meth addict? Okay, as long as you can afford it and aren’t robbing, harassing or stabbing your neighbours
BeerBrat@reddit
Too much bodily autonomy and ownership of self, all varieties of authoritarian statists disapprove.
capsaicinintheeyes@reddit
It'll be an interesting test to see how much the results would mirror alcohol prohibition or the war on drugs (I get that this would allow for home-grow, but not everyone in the city's got the spare acreage, and I understand tobacco's a pretty needy crop in terms of soil nutrients). Would it reaquire its "cool" niche? Or would people just quit the stuff?
Business-Ambition-33@reddit
Massive black market potential here
g4rb4g3p4rtyx@reddit
i can literally go down the street 5 mins and buy reserve cigarettes
mecuentaesuna@reddit
Sure, we’ve been smoking for 12,300+ years, but it’s our generation that wants to fix it. lol
Rialas_HalfToast@reddit
You probably don't have a good idea here of the process for producing tobacco, it's not a one-person activity like growing a tomato plant on the side of the house.
VinylCapedJawa@reddit
The lobbyists big tobacco pays for would never let that happen.
Syresiv@reddit
Much as I like the idea of fewer people smoking, prohibition didn't really work the first 2 times and I don't expect the 3rd will be better.
I'm not sure what it would take to bring this to an end, but I don't expect prohibition is the answer.

The best you can do is to ban the legal sale of tobacco. Most people aren't going to grow it on their own. See Marijuana and how that all shook out.
