What’s a car that you first thought was ugly but now the design has grown on you.
Posted by MikeisTOOOTALLL@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 608 comments
For me it’s the brand new Honda Accord, despite it looking like a Ford Taurus to many. However, now looking at the car it’s not entirely ugly and somewhat presentable. Nonetheless, Honda definitely needs a better design team.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Definitely M3/M4, hated it at release, I loved it in person.
Vhozite@reddit
I never thought the Supra was ugly, but I’m definitely surprised by how small it is in person every single time lol. It looks gigantic in pictures for some reason.
IllllIIlIllIllllIIIl@reddit
They really do look smaller in person. I saw one for the first time a few months ago. I admit as it approached in my rear view mirror, I briefly thought "Yay, another black ND miata!"
Totally tangential, but it pulled up beside me at the light and I saw that the driver was a spectacularly beautiful woman. She gave me a smile and then the light turned green and she floored it. Naturally I've been in love ever since.
psychocrow05@reddit
I cannot wrap my head around how you mistook the front end of a supra for a miata...
IllllIIlIllIllllIIIl@reddit
It was a tiny black car at night and I was looking at it as it approached from a distance in my rear view mirror.
eChaos@reddit
Are you Clark Griswold?
julienjj@reddit
Same as a 911, Cayman and most supercars. They're all tiny.
LCHMD@reddit
911 isn’t tiny anymore at all.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
911 & Cayman are both pretty big in person IMO. Especially the turbo/widebody 911s.
lhturbo@reddit
The #1 car that pulls this trick. Bugatti. They look massive in photos but they are tiny in person.
DeTomato_@reddit
I thought the same. Yeah, the Supra looks enormous in pictures. Its sister, the Z4 looks pretty wide in person. I don’t know what mind trick the Supra’s designers used, but somehow they managed to make it look tiny, nimble, and sporty.
pursuer_of_simurg@reddit
Those kidneys work in aggressive designs of m3/m4 but the base 4 series with chrome kidneys still looks like shit to me.
Gt3 car looks great though.
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
Funny enough, the 4 series is actually BMW's best selling non SUV.
Seems like people actually love the huge chrome kidney grilles.
LCHMD@reddit
Typical BMW drivers just like to offend.
cobrareaper@reddit
Yeah the GT3 car is the sole reason that design grew on me. Every time I see a regular M3/M4 now I just think of the racecar and it makes me tolerate the nostrils.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I agree, I think it only looks good on the M cars. The 4-series base take the m340i front end IMO.
TheMotionOfTheOcean@reddit
Agreed, with the wide body kit on the GT3 cars I think it really looks awesome
LCHMD@reddit
M3/4 yes. 4-series? No.
GStarOvercooked@reddit
How did you get over that snout though? I still can't believe that anyone can be seen in them, let alone pay hard earned money for them.
ragingduck@reddit
Ditto. I went from hater to owner.
poopmanscoop@reddit
I was a big hater. Now I own one. Funny how things happen.
sakbak@reddit
I think new BMW is still ugly. They’ve aged better than the blobs Mercedes’s EV division is putting out though. Glad that the BMW community has gotten fond of the new looks I guess.
smashingcones@reddit
I've never really been a fan of BMW in general but I think the new M3 in particular is one of the best designs on the road today, especially in isle of man green.
-175-@reddit
Agreed they still look bad. The grille is ugly for no reason. Just ditch it, why ruin the car?
I actually decided against a new M3 or M4 because it felt dumb paying over 70k for an ugly car
ukcats12@reddit
Same story here. Every time I see one in person I laugh a bit. The grilles are just comically oversized and don't fit the rest of the car at all. I've wanted a new M3 my entire life, and the G80 design made me buy something else twice.
hugh_madson@reddit
M2 for me as well, but tbh I don't get as upset at designs too much.
I don't even think the VB ('22+) generation WRX, or pre facelift elantra N were that bad.
I'll admit I'm probably blind or have shit design taste.
racks1700@reddit
The BMW is absolutely still ugly
Amish_EDM@reddit
I still don’t love the sedan/coupe, but for some reason the wagon is 🤤
Real_Garlic9999@reddit
I still don't like the kidney grill, but I definitely don't hate it as much as I did

BMW E65 LCI fixed a lot of the design mistakes of the pre-LCI car. Too bad it's still so horrible from a reliability standpoint, because I think it's beautiful.
WhoDidU@reddit
The current gen Lexus is. At first I thought it looked too “boy racerish”, now I think it’s actually pretty sharp and a balanced design. For context I generally prefer very subtle elegant traditional German car designs from the late 90s and early 2000s
posikid@reddit
Cybertruck. hahaha just kidding, the more i see it, the uglier it gets
weristjonsnow@reddit
With all the hate when it was initially released I remember thinking "it really can't be that bad"
Finally saw one irl. Nope. It's that bad
I_like_cake_7@reddit
I just can’t even imagine being seen in a Cybertruck. The Cybertruck is the official truck of “tell me you’re a douchebag without telling me that you’re a douchebag.”
DickCheneysLVAD@reddit
Some dude has one in my town painted old school dark Camo... (*just like the old Hummer 1 was for the military) He lifted it about 4 more inches & He put a bunch of aftermarket Apocalypse Zombie shit on it too (like a giant Black Bull Bars & a winch) & an aftermarket Black Steel Bumper. It looks fuckin rediculous & just know he prlly paid $175k just makes it SO SO DUMB...
Like in a Zombie Apocalypse, you're really gonna be able to charge your GIANT gawdy Tesla Cyber Truck...
So stupid.
IHateStratePeople@reddit
lol. Meanwhile cyber truck owners are out enjoying life, and not even giving a second thought to you existence. Must be miserable being so worked up over others’ choices.
Dp04@reddit
Cybertruck drivers give all of the fucks what people around them think of them.
IHateStratePeople@reddit
Oh yeah? Why are you giving them this alleged attention they’re so hungry for?
SWATSgradyBABY@reddit
I love how cyber truck defenders LITERALLY use a zombie apocalypse as a justification.
HonestFuckinAbe@reddit
I somewhat disagree with the last point. Cybertruck is not ideal cause it's so big and aparently failure prone, but in the typical movie zombie apocalypse senerio long term it seems easier to generate electricity than refine gasoline.
Dp04@reddit
You generating electricity without gasoline? It usually comes from generators in movies and shows.
The correct answer is diesel engines with a biodiesel tune. Run on anything.
Proof-Ad-3485@reddit
You're gonna wanna sit down for this, but petroleum goes bad.
SRQmoviemaker@reddit
Tell that to my briggs and stratton. Just ran 5 year old gas no problem (post hurricane generator needed gas and couldn't find any)
lowstrife@reddit
It's going to be even worse when they're $17,000 used trucks and beat to shit. Then you won't even need to be a rich douchebag.
The worst people will be driving these things. Nissan Altima with 4 body colors, but worse.
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
I think even they will turn their noses up at that... Are we convinced they will MAKE it beyond 3-5 years without falling apart?
DudeWhereIsMyDuduk@reddit
I was going to have to say, first you have to make it to that point.
You don't see a ton of $5K Maseratis out there, but that's mostly because they've already become recyclables before someone is putting one on their seedy BHPH lot with the giant inflation Mattress Firm dude out front.
HalfFrozenSpeedos@reddit
Temu MRAP?
AngelSymmeyrika@reddit
It's actually worse in person. The uneven seams really show, as do the fingerprints.
PersonNumber7Billion@reddit
It's like an instant PT Cruiser.
Not_Daijoubu@reddit
Seeing one that was dirty with fingerprints rolling down the street was the big "oh lord it's fugly" moment for me.
TBH I don't think it look bad in photos and such, but a rolling dumpster bin would be a more pleasing sight on the street.
newtonreddits@reddit
I saw one last night parked 3 feet in front of me right when I exited a bar. It felt like the visual equivalent of getting sucker punched
Hoovooloo42@reddit
It's amazing how photogenic they are. In person the proportions are all whack lol, it looks even worse
FictionalContext@reddit
I saw one with a white wrap fit a catering company, and it didn't look bad. Definitely eye catching, perfect for advertising.
I saw that same one before they wrapped it, and oh my God, it was a gray turd. So cheap looking. Like a backyard redneck project.
LeftHandedFapper@reddit
So true, it looks like a rejected concept car from Robocop
AmericanExcellence@reddit
just saw one on the road. among other cars - just normal nothing cars that look neither good nor bad - it looks like a literal piece of trash on the road. just visual pollution.
mr_bots@reddit
I find it’s actually worse irl than in pictures
IllllIIlIllIllllIIIl@reddit
I saw one for the first time the other day. I was shocked by how much uglier it was in person, and I already thought it was quite ugly in photos.
It also seemed to have a delicate brown-ish sheen to it. Rust? I don't know but the finish just looked terrible.
FalconDCW@reddit
It reminds me of trucks I used to make out of Lego when I was a kid.
andrew2018022@reddit
I think it looks awesome, I wouldn’t ever buy one though
fAbnrmalDistribution@reddit
I feel the same way. I'm convinced that if it were relased by anyone other than Tesla, it would be received better, for the looks in particular. It looks cool and far different than anything on the road right now. Worth no where near the asking price, though.
USPSRay@reddit
I'm impressed that someone finally outdid the Aztek.
ChemicalEscapes@reddit
The Aztek was just ahead of its time as far as styling goes. You could release the same car today and no one would bat an eye.
Pontiac Aztek
Honda HRV
Other similar crossovers
krazy_kh@reddit
I hate myself
ChasedWarrior@reddit
After Pontiac removed the cladding the Aztec didn't look bad at all. You're correct if released today it would blend in with all the other SUVs on the road
ChemicalEscapes@reddit
Mos def. My other ride is a 2017 Escape SE titanium. 2.0T AWD and 320hp to the wheels after mods. She would look mean AF if it wasn't for the goofy ass plastic cladding.
ChasedWarrior@reddit
A sports truck like yours should not have any cladding period. Lol
ChemicalEscapes@reddit
My Edge doesn't, my Escape does. She's not a sports truck. I just know how to pull a satisfactory amount of HP to keep them both daily's
Margarineorama@reddit
The black Aztec is so much less offensive on the eyes.
ChemicalEscapes@reddit
I like them, but admittedly for those who don't, black makes everything look good. My Edge ST is black and a friend has an identical one in white. It looks like a giant egg. The only reason hers is palatable is the limo black tint all around including a surprisingly low set AS1 line and black wheels.
HaruMistborn@reddit

ChemicalEscapes@reddit

Vhozite@reddit
The cybertruck is weird because I can see the vision, but looking at the actual finished product it just completely missed the mark.
RangeRoverHSE@reddit
I honestly think the front 3/4ths looks pretty good but then they just stopped at the back and forgot to finish it.
Mental_Medium3988@reddit
i dont really hate the design, i like straight lines and hard angles. i do think it needed more time in the oven. but with elons optimistic timelines and over promises they couldnt wait much longer. the fact you can remove a major trim piece with your bare hands is insane. and for a supposed offroad beast it gets beat by a ford lighting that is on street tires and with both lacking locking diffs.
Respectable_Answer@reddit
One more crease along the side and in a smaller package might have just done the trick.
hi_im_bored13@reddit
It doesn’t look great but it’s not that big of a truck. I was surprised first time i saw one
nlpnt@reddit
A smaller package fixes so many ills. It's much harder to screw up a small car because of packaging requirements. If it were the size of an old Dodge Rampage it would be great.
santorin@reddit
The lights also lack character. The light bar up front can't decide if it wants to be straight, curved, or tapered, and the taillights look like an afterthought.
Kamukix@reddit
Lol it's okay to admit it. I just said for the first time last night....that it has angles...well, maybe AN angle, where I kinda like it. Then I see the rear again and the moment passes haha.
It looks like a moon rover or something, from certain angles, and I don't mind that. I wouldn't own it though.
WheresTheSauce@reddit
I think the front end looks good. The rest not so much
ItsKlobberinTime@reddit
If the front fascia was cut and pasted onto the GMC Terradyne concept I'd probably like it but everything behind the front of the door is just awful.
Kamukix@reddit
That back end really is unfortunate looking
czarfalcon@reddit
I saw one with a matte black wrap that looked kinda cool, or maybe that’s just because cybertrucks are already so common near me that the novelty has worn off and that’s what it takes to catch my eye now.
Kamukix@reddit
I've seen a few with some wraps on them, I wouldn't mind seeing one in black though...weirdly not seen one like that yet. I'm sure it'll happen soon enough. I did see one towing a small trailer though and that was pretty cool.
Never thought I'd see anyone use it for actual truck stuff haha.
czarfalcon@reddit
I’ve actually seen multiple with black wraps! I still don’t love it, but I dislike it less.
Still haven’t seen anyone doing “truck stuff” with them, but I’m not one to judge.
andrew2018022@reddit
The wraps are actually really cool I agree, I think the silhouette of it is really nice but that OEM color is bad
Kamukix@reddit
Haha I, like you, don't think I'll ever love it...but I dislike it much less now. The only wraps I've seen were things for companies or random sticker bomb type of jobs.
I don't judge anyone harshly for not doing truck stuff with their truck (most don't anyway, same with most sportscar people never doing anything sporting with their cars). I just really didn't expect to see that almost ever, outside of some YouTube influencer video.
Cat_Montgomery@reddit
The cyber truck has made me appreciate the Aztek

iva had an S and a Y, loved the steering in the Cybertruck but honestly felt like the interior was cheap. amazing software, poor fit and finish
El_mochilero@reddit
It looked horrifically ugly online.
Then I saw one in person. Now I think they are obnoxiously big AND horrifically ugly.
Citizen_Snip@reddit
I share that sentiment, and at first I didn't "hate" it. It was weird looking and definitely very polarizing. Seeing it in person, that thing is ugly as sin. It definitely looks better in photos, and that's really the only compliment I can give it.
ChasedWarrior@reddit
I see so many of those things now I don't notice them as much as I did a few months ago.
StuddedWill@reddit
I am undoubtedly convinced that most people hate the Cybertruck only because humans are afraid of what they don’t know and hate radical change. From a design perspective the Cybertruck is futuristic yet minimalist. It succeeds in making traditional trucks look boring and uncool to children. And remember children are the most powerful audience to market anything to. If you can make someone’s kids like it, odds are the parents buy it to please them. Older people won’t like what the youth likes because “my generation made it better”. The Cybertruck is a celebrity in its own right because of the polarizing effect it has on lame and complacent people.
HideyoshiJP@reddit
The only thing I like is the finish and the headlight areas.

Honestly if they added a bit of detail to that boring front end, it might fix it. I don't mind the look from the side or rear, but the front looks like they gave up.

BMW E60
solo118@reddit
I still do not understand how the E60 was so hated on! It is stunning, still is!
sharkydad@reddit
Didn't understand the Bangle hate train. He avoided the Audi pitfall of design sameness / staleness. The 5 series, 3 series, first Z4, and 6 series were all really cool and modern looking, and helped BMW overtake Mercedes as the default German super saloon maker.
LCHMD@reddit
Come on. The pre-facelift 7 series and 6er both are absolutely terrible today.
sharkydad@reddit
I guess the 7 series wasn't his best work (although the subsequent model was worse) but the 6 series was pretty nice looking in person.
LCHMD@reddit
I really like his first gen 1 series.

Skodakenner@reddit
Its basically every mainline bmw. Recently i saw an old thread from when the e90 came out and everyone hated it now they love it. Hell my dad even told me how everyone hated the e39 when it came out
sinkrate@reddit
I think we'll end up looking at divisive modern BMW designs the same way.
mr_lab_rat@reddit
To be fair the e90 had a very early LCI that improved the two main sore points - kidney and tail lights.
NerdyKyogre@reddit
Holy shit that was an LCI? I was today years old when I realized that wasn't a completely new generation of car.
redspikedog@reddit
well, kind of. Same chassis.
New bumpers, new hood, new headlight housings, new mirrors, new wheels, daytime running lights (halos).
Same with M sport models - everything the base model got but this time M bumpers.
M3 cars still kept the E92 Coupe front end and rear bumpers. Even the E90 still kept the e92 headlights and bumpers of the pre facelift. Only facelift that the M3s got was the tail lights for both E90s and E92. and most of the interior stuff listed below.
Into the interior, we got new Push start stop button trim, gear lever design, updated iDrive system, Hi Fi sound system (my personal favorite because it has kicken' bass) is now standard.
mr_lab_rat@reddit
The 2006 release was a new car, 2009 was the facelift.

Noobmunch95@reddit
I agree totally. When the e60/e61 came out I thought they were hideous, they've aged like fine wine.
NCSUGrad2012@reddit
It's wild to me so many people didn't originally like that design. That design is what got me into cars back in the day. I thought it was beautiful from day one.
ny0000m@reddit
I was not interested in BMWs at all last year. But an e60 535i popped up near me and I was awestruck by it's looks. It was supposed to be a temporary car while I fix my turbo civic and save up for a Vette, but I decided to keep it
lemoopse@reddit
E60 M-Sports are even better looking than M5s imo. I still miss staring back at my old 530i
ny0000m@reddit
Bmw does an amazing job at making the same car look like a commuter car or a race car with basically just different bumpers.
Noobmunch95@reddit
I think in car design circles it was considered very ahead of its time.
Personally for me it was the flick on the headlights and taillights gave it an awkward face. But over time that's what I began to love about them. I even like the 6 series of that same designer now too.
NerdyKyogre@reddit
I love the E60, but the E63 6 series has a very Eeyore-like kind of depressed face about it. I like that the E60 looks like a car that wants to attack the open road, but I struggle to figure out what the E63's personality is.
Coasterman345@reddit
The thick top of the grille and the eyelid of the headlights completely ruin it for me. At least on the E90s they removed the ‘mustache’ in the LCI update.
jpcastro_90@reddit
Came here to say the same. I think the E60s problem is that it followed the E39. With some time to get used to the E60 and see subsequent models, the E60 now looks great.
doitorregretit@reddit
E61… (the wagon). Preferable m5 with the v10.
Pattern_Is_Movement@reddit
Chris Bangle was ahead of his time. I got to meet him once, great guy, was never appreciated for his revolutionary design at the time. I always liked it, but the hate brigaded on, and eventually having him leave... only for more boring design to replace it.

Wow, imagine people having a different opinion than yours.
Considering that the Big Grille on the 4 series is absolutely destroying everything else in the market in terms of sales numbers for non SUV's. I think your opinion is probably in the minority of the actual buyers of this car.
ukcats12@reddit
No other single class of car has as many variants as the 4 series, so that's a huge part of the reason it sells so well. Doubly so when you consider it's basically the only option for a mainstream luxury EV sedan at its price point. The 4 series sales is a culmination of 17 unique models. Compare that to something like the A5, which has only eight unique models.

spongebob_meth@reddit
Do you mean the plymouth superbird/ charger daytona? the super bee was just a trim level of the coronet.
Fine_Supermarket9418@reddit
Yes it was. But there was that grill on the 70 Super Bee that grew on me over the years. The 'Bird/Daytona cars were leviathan cars that never really appealed to me much.
spongebob_meth@reddit
Was it any different than the coronet? I don't see any major difference right off the bat.
I'll agree, that front end looks great. Its a bit of a meme on here, but I think the coronet wagons look amazing as well.

A recent one for me would be the VW Passat B9.
Well, it's only been out for less than a year, to be fair. But in that year, my opinion of this car went from "this might be the ugliest car they've ever built" to "maybe it's alright" to "this is the most elegant Passat generation so far".
I really like it, but I can see why its styling might be controversial compared to the B8 for some people.
The 11th generation Civic has grown on me too, but I still think the 10th generation Civic, and especially the Type-R look like they were designed by a 14-year-old.
LCHMD@reddit
I see them daily now and imho they’re a far cry from the beautiful and timeless Lichte designed B8.

C8 Corvette
LCHMD@reddit
I’m the opposite. Took years to see one in Europe and when I finally did it looked even worse than on pictures. Not great proportions especially compared to the C7.
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
I think that was kind of their goal.
They knew it wasn't going to be loved originally by the old school boomer crowd, which were their main buyers, but now with the new generation, they are targeting a younger audience to stay relevant.
Everytime I see a C7 Corvette, it just screams old person car, but whenever I see a C8 it looks like a true exotic car, and i love it.
SchemeShoddy4528@reddit
wow you must hate those other boomer cars like the supra, z, gtr, mustang, every bmw. all the same layout as a corvette. the new midengine design is uglier than it's competition, and it was changed because mid engined cars are more performant. obviously younger people are way less likely to have actual midengined cars and more likely to own front engine rear drive...
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
Front engine doesn't make a car boomer style...
BRZ is primarily bought by younger people, i don't see a BRZ and think of a boomer hopping out.
SchemeShoddy4528@reddit

I'm pretty confident in saying if enthusiasts drove a Juke Nismo RS with the manual they would at least understand why people like them.
New_Inside3001@reddit
I owned a juke nismo rs for a year as a stopgap after my m2 comp lease ended
Gonna sound crazy, but I had an equal amount of fun with the juke
The design on the nismo is actually unique and getting recaro seats in a crossover with a manual and a lsd is a unique experience
But emphasis on how cheap I bought it, if I had to pay top dollar I would not have liked it as much, it’s the story with the weird car with good mechanical value proposition, it’s horrible until it tanks in value
gonzo_gat0r@reddit
I really enjoyed my Nismo RS, but I think Nissan trying to also make it an economy car really diluted the appeal.

The Audi R8. Let me explain. It came out at the same time as the Veyron. To me, the R8 looks like a smushed Veyron. Then the second gen came out and I still just shrugged. Especially when the second gen was like 99% a Huracan. Why wouldn't just want a Huracan instead? Then I knew someone who got one. Being a muscle car guy, I was quick to joke that it needed an aftermarket exhaust. That's the first thing you do for a Vette, Mustang, Camaro, etc. Then I got a text, "hey, I'm doing an exotic car rally and my friend bailed, you wanna go?" FUCK YEAH! I meet up with him, he started it and I almost giggled. Ok, it sounds good stock. Then we left the parking lot, fairly easy up to like 45 in a 55, and then traffic opened. He dropped a couple gears, went WOT up to like 90, and all I can say is FUCK ME! That car is absolutely perfect! That's the sort of pushed back into the seat feeling that I've dreamed of for years, with modified mustangs and such, and his car does it 100% stock, and via AWD, so you know it's gonna stick. I was already in love with the car, and then we're cruising down the highway at like 140mph alongside a green Huracan and my friend goes, "If anyone calls the police, they're gonna report a green lambo, not a grey Audi." Damn, he was dead on. For a rally car, this is rolling in stealth mode.

Nissan Juke
No, seriously. It's still kinda ugly, but in an endearing way that lends it character. When it came out it looked like a frankencar. But in the 10 years since, as crossovers and SUVs have only gotten bigger and blander, the Juke has started to pass as more of a pseudo hot hatch oddity, with its flared fenders, sloping rear roof, and surprisingly low curb weight.
It basically from "that's kinda gross" to "that's kinda neat."
yudha98@reddit
The car that started the small crossover craze. Before nissan juke came out, rover streetwise, citroen c3 xtr and vw polo dune were a supermini with jacked looks. Even 2006-12 suzuki sx4 was basically jacked up hatchback rather than small crossover

G80 M3 for sure. i used to hate it but now i understand that it differentiates itself between the rest of the bmw lineup.
czarfalcon@reddit
Say what you will about BMW’s designs, but at least they have a unique design language for each model. It’s hard to say the same about Audi or Mercedes where their higher-end models basically just look like bigger versions of their lower-tier models.
hbs18@reddit
But this was exactly why everybody loved the F generation BMWs, the design cohesion meant they all looked basically the same.
czarfalcon@reddit
To each their own, but I personally like the greater distinction. Sure there are some designs I like more than others, but at a glance you’re not going to confuse a 330i for an M3, or a 3-series for a 7-series for that matter.
The F generation was beautiful, don’t get me wrong! But in my biased opinion they did get some things right with the G generation.

MembershipNo2077@reddit
11th gen looked boring to me at first. When we saw it in person it looked great, immediately my wife was sold on it. I think its proportions really pop when you're standing there with it.
Also, yea, the interior is a big step up from the 10th, but that's expected.
Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
Very unpopular, but I still dont like the new Type R.
The old Type R was way better, especially with the paint matched wing, and the huge hood scoop.
Evilmoustachetwirler@reddit
I still find the design of the 'newer' models to be really busy. When Honda was in it's prime it was all about clean lines and more of a track ready aesthetic. Crisp white, with track style wheels. The DC2, NA1/2 and EK9 still look great today
handymanshandle@reddit
Felt. I just don’t think the new Type R is very attractive or cohesive. The FK8 certainly wasn’t either but it was at least very distinct. Honda made it very clear that it was a Civic Type R. The FL5 Type R as a whole just feels like they restrained everything just to sell the Integra Type S as an upgrade.
aaayyyuuussshhh@reddit
I mean if you like 20 year old boy racer cars sure. It looks like something a 12 year old would design. Personally thought it was hideous when it came out and still do. Dazzling-Rooster2103@reddit
I mean, I am 23, so that probably makes sense.
In a world where everyone complains that every car looks the same, the FK8 Type r was just so crazy looking that I liked it, the new FL5 is just a lot more bland.
europeanperson@reddit
I’m with you, if I’m paying that much for a civic with dealer markup, I want a “special” crazy looking car. The FK8 delivers that, the FL5 just looks like someone put a weird wing on their civic. But I get some people like the sleeper look, at some point we all reach a point where it feels weird getting out of a “boy racer” car.

I find that for me it's often retroactive. Like a model would come out and I am like "eww", but then the refresh/next gen comes out, often a response to the popular opinion of "eww" and it just ends up being boring and stupid so then i go back to the "ugly" version and go "hmm, I see what they did there, at least it's interesting".
Most notable example is Gen 4 Prius (16-19). When the Gen 4 Refresh came out, it just made things boring. The front is kinda OK, but the rear is awful. At least the OG Gen 4 is interesting, if not "pretty". Now that Gen 5 is out - I think it's OK, I don't love it nearly as much as the internet seems to. Coming from someone who owns what I think is the modern Neon SRT-4, those SRT-4s are really cool! I love how all they really changed visually was the front end and the addition of a big ass spoiler. Add the factory muffler delete and you have a car that's childish as fuck but undeniably cool, especially when they're clean.

Thought they looked ridiculous when I was younger compared to the 911s. But I’ve grown to love them as they’ve gotten older and those 996 style headlights are classic. I’ve also heard they’re fantastic cars.
balakebro@reddit
They are! Just got back from a quick day trip in my ‘01 5-speed, about 4 hours of driving, top down all the way. It was great. I’ve had it as a daily for a few months now, and have been pleasantly surprised at how good to drive it is, while also being good at being a “normal” daily car.

The new Corvette. I thought they ruined it but when you stop thinking of it as a corvette and mentally put it in a class of its own.. it's a damn good looking car.

kbunnell16@reddit
The main reason I started to warm up to the m2 was because I saw it in other colors than light blue and red

Land Rover Defender.
When it first released, I thought it looked ugly. The proportion was weird.
My opinion was instantly changed after ai saw it for the first time in person. Coincidentally, the first time I saw the new Defender was on a highway, side by side with a Land Cruiser. The Defender looked wide and tall, it had so much off road presence even compared to a Land Cruiser. In real life, the proportion looked right. Its rear end is a nice tribute to the OG Defender. The front end is definitely the weak point of the styling, but it doesn’t look that bad in real life.
The new Defender is definitely not a photogenic car.

VB WRX - way better looking irl than in pictures. I wouldn’t say the car is beautiful or anything but i definitely appreciate the design when i see it. The VA is probably more traditionally better looking but also looks almost too plain in comparison.
The one criticism I’ll standby is the fender flairs looking way better when they’re color matched.
Evilmoustachetwirler@reddit
100%, first time I saw pictures I thought 'look how they massacred my boy' but it's really growing on me. Much better in person too
tangledisthebestfilm@reddit
I'll even go one further and say I really like the flairs. It gives it a rally vibe that it's recent predecessors lacked visually at least.
German_Drive@reddit
The stock colors really aren't doing it any favors. Seeing the VB rendered in Autumn Green (the wilderness color) made me appreciate the design a lot more. Weird headlights, for example, work a lot better if they blend in and support the accentuated body lines.
Same goes for the unpainted fender flairs. The only problem is that they clash with bright colors too much.
Vhozite@reddit
I like the orange and WR Blue.
German_Drive@reddit
And that's probably why you dislike the fender flares. That's cool though: at the end of the day, it comes down to preference.
Personally, I can't fathom why Subaru didn't offer a single warm color on the VB. Assuming that Autumn Green is not an option, Brilliant Bronze and even Dark Mahogany would have worked.
Summoorevincent@reddit
I love them. I do not like painted flairs though. Looks aside it’s the best WRX they have ever made from a mechanical standpoint. Aftermarket is huge and only growing too. A guy ran a 10.001 quarter mile which is awesome.
Vhozite@reddit
Damn what’s his setup?
Summoorevincent@reddit
It was ran by TPG Tuning in Pittsburgh. I think they have an IAG block that’s not out yet. https://www.thedrive.com/news/an-american-tuner-built-a-10-second-vb-subaru-wrx-and-its-not-done-yet
Trades46@reddit
As I've seen it more I'm receptive to the VB. I still don't like it per say, and while the FA24 has a great stock tune, I'm still in the belief Subaru played it way too safe compared to the rivals like Golf R, Civic Type R etc.
Pkock@reddit
Actual purchase price wise the WRX is closer to the GTI and SI than those ones you listed.
Vhozite@reddit
If we are talking about the TR or GT i understand and agree, but I think the base WRX is awesome as is. Not as cap as those cars but also way cheaper so I’m fine with it not being as capable.
Pkock@reddit
The flairs depend on the color of the car. Mine is ceramic white and I would never match the flairs, sapphire and black looks good with flairs as well.
The red ones look horrendous, I think WRB and silver look better color matched as well.

2025 Camry. It still looks ugly in pictures imo but irl it looks good.

C4 Corvette, especially the latter years.

Most late 90s cars. They used to feel so boring and bland but now there's something about them that I like.
Probably me getting old and senile (I'm 30)

BMW i3. I will say I’ve always like it, but the consensus when I bought mine was that it was very ugly. The public has definitely warmed to it over the years.

The last generation of the Caprice and Buick Roadmaster station wagons. I really would like to get one for my hot rodded dad mobile.

22 WRX. Hated the release. Saw one at a dealership and now it’s in the driveway.

11th gen Civics. I liked 10th gen better, especially the coupes, but the 11th gen’s have definitely grown on me.

Honestly, when the ND Miata was released I just wasn't a huge fan of it. The headlights and taillights just seemed strange and squinty to me. It just seemed to be trying to hard to be a cool, sophisticated sports car and not embracing the essentially cheerful nature of the Miata.
Eight years later, I ended up buying one.

Fiat Punto Cabrio Hated it first but then I bought one and I love it!

McLaren P1.
It was originally my least favourite of the hypercar "Holy Trinity," but now it is easily my number one.

The new Grand Cherokees. I loved the look of the WK2s, but the new ones with the forward slanted grill really didn’t do it for me. But now that I’ve seen more than a few in the wild I’ve come around to them.

Latest M3. The sedan and coupe look good but more specifically the touring looks GREAT.
eZreazy@reddit
I can’t believe I’m saying this but M3 in a dark color.

The Accord from the side and rear looks like the Audi A7, it’s the front that’s horrible for me. Still likely gonna get it next year though.
Rogue will likely be traded in a few months and I’m thinking of the Buick Envista, I’m sold on the looks alone!

BMW i3. When I first saw it during the announcements, I thought what were they thinking. After sitting down in it...appreciated it a bit more. Perfect commuter car...just unsure about the carbon fiber choice and skinny tires that raised prices significantly.

BMW M—just kidding. Still look like ass.
The last gen of Camaros. The fronts look goofy in photos, but are alright in person. Also, their tail lights are more round, and look much nicer than Corvette tail lights for some unfathomable reason.

M3.
I think they look so aggressive now, they did a great job distinguishing the M3 from the regular 3 series, with the F series it was pretty hard to tell the difference between the M3 and regular 3 series.
Seeing that huge grille on the street just screams performance IMO.

I couldn’t stand the rear end of the cayman when it first came out. A few years later I saw one on the street and couldn’t stop looking at the gorgeous humps over the rear wheels. I remember thinking “wait…what didn’t I love about this?”
Opinion hasn’t changed much in the subsequent 15 or so years.
