Asylum law was made at a time when people were fleeing from one country to the next nearest safe country within train/walking distance. They didn't get any social welfare or government assistance, they were just let into the country to protect their lives.
Nowadays most asylum seekers are coming from the Middle East/Central Africa, hopping on a plane and travelling hundreds/thousands of miles to get to Europe. What's more is that they're given free accommodation, free food, spending money, and generous social welfare.
Furthermore, there's no way of differentiating genuine asylum seekers from economic migrants abusing the system to get to Europe. An economic migrant says they're gay and their life is in danger, and automatically gets asylum seeker status.
The system is clearly broken, and needs to be updated for modern reality.

Where is the nearest safe country for LGBT refugees? When you live in a sea of those colored in red countries for the death penalty for being gay, the nearest safe country is often Europe. Not against preventing economic migrants but some people really do need to make the trek to Europe.

This is good for Europe though. The costs to house and forever clothe and feed 30+ year old illegal economic aliens that don't want to learn the language and culture and just want to exist on welfare is far, far greater than the benefit we get from them working minimum wage 2-3 days a week while paying close to no taxes.

It wasn't the bleeding hearts that created asylum laws. It was the imperialist powers. It was an empty gesture at the time because non-whites had no means to seek asylum in Europe. Now technology has changed that and asylum laws are no longer convenient.

Making it even scumnier. The Russians that run these travel agencies force the refugees to pay large sums of money to them, and they lie to them. Telling them they will have jobs in Europe. Then they take all their money, and take them to the border and leave them there. Truly some of the most evil people you can imagine. Once they've used up their purpose theyre deported. Since Russia doesn't want them. Many use their entire life savings for the trip.

This is to make it impossible to send them back after their application is rejected. Because where? Only a quarter of those rejected actually get send away. Wife's does immigration law and deals with Asylum cases all day. The rejections are just due to a significant lack of evidence/ paperwork to prove their case. Forged documents will get you in if the lawyer you are dealing with isn't so hung up on validating everything. The system is actively being abused.

You do realise that Portugal has massive migration into it from the global south as well and not just asylum seekers (a lot of them from Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan in the past few years), right? Why would an asylum seeker want to come to a country where he'd barely survive on his wages and if they had a family, they definitely wouldn't survive on our wages (Portuguese employers have been exploiting migrants from developing countries into borderline slavery in Alentejo to pick blueberries (or raspberries, don't remember which at the moment) for an example, they tend to live in 2 bedroom apartments with like 16 other people)? We have been having discussions (read as: right-wing parties (so roughly 50% of the electorate) complaining) about "uncontrolled immigration" for like 8 years now, it's just not via asylum. Maybe don't talk about a country when the only thing you quickly googled about it was the number of applicants that got approved for asylum (also, the number of actual applications were 2972 for last year and our services handling this are EXTREMELY backed up)

This hasn't changed though. If an asylum seeker is found to have skipped a closer save country and they have no aditional elements to convince the country to take them in, their case is 99% certain to be rejected.
The problem is that so many claims are flooding the European migration services that the rejected cases aren't followed up on to make sure that they actually leave the country and many disappear under the radar afterwards. Or the original country simply doesn't want to take them back.

Agreed. It’s getting to a point where, unless the asylum system is fundamentally reformed, countries will follow in Poland’s footsteps and suspend it.
It has, as you’ve said, evolved from “go to the first safe country and their obligation is to not kill you” to “shop for your preferred welfare state and their obligation is to provide for you.”
The problems with reintroducing the former are 1) the “nearest safe country” is often Greece or Italy, which would have to take on an unreasonable and destabilizing number of migrants due to the sheer quantity of migrants these days, and 2) western countries are not comfortable walking by large numbers of destitute, not provided-for, people lingering around the streets … it would make a modern Dane or German uncomfortable to see an underclass of starving, homeless migrants lurking around because they cannot get a job and the state doesn’t give them anything
The problems with the current system are 1) the impossibility of effectively identifying and deporting those who are not genuine asylum candidates creates a de facto “open border” regime which puts economic and social strain on host countries, and 2) nations such as Turkey or Belarus could weaponize or threaten to weaponize migration
So, for many Western countries, the best solution seems to be to try to dismantle asylum protections altogether, under the argument that it “asks too much” of them in a modern world — maybe Arab countries would step up and fulfill their share, but, until then, genuine asylum seekers would get the short end of the stick

The current asylum system in Europe is broken and will in the next few years probably be completely revamped. In fact i think that in several years all governments in Europe will agree to keep out any economic migrants or asylum seekers. Borders will be strengthened to the max, better systems will be created to recognise "unwanted citizens". Sure parties and organisations will be against it, but we see that even in the Left people are slowly turning "the other side" so to say. In Denmark the current most strict migration policies were made by a social democratic government. And Donald Tusk himself is a liberal.

I'm not sure what you even mean here, the US gets large numbers of refugees from various destabilized states in central and south america, this presidential election cycle fear mongering and outright fascist (as in literal neo-nazi) lies about immigrants (for example accusing Haitian refugees of stealing and eating peoples' cats and dogs, a lie created and popularized by the leader of Blood Tribe, an explicitly neo-Nazi group) have become a major narrative in the election and those inflammatory lies have been repeated by the Republican Presidential and VP nominees.

Just off the top of my head: the US supported a military coup (1948) of the democratically elected Gallegos by a group of military officers led by Jiminez, Jiminez went on to lead the country in a dictatorship that both oppressed the population and sold out the country's resources to US corporations (mainly oil, as is tradition).
Heavy involvement in "drug war" style relations which escalate violence and militarization of police in governments and increase influence of the US while not addressing the causes of the drug problem which ALSO harms Venezuela and other countries by increasing organized crime and drug issues, these are major contributors of crime and violence in states from Mexico to Colombia and are mostly caused by US drug policy (both illegalization of substances and attempts at enforcement).
After having stolen oil rights during the US backed dictatorship, US oil companies continued to dominate Venezuela's natural resources for decades, depriving Venezuela the ability to profit and develop itself from its own resources.
Once Chavez was elected and he began to try and reassert Venezuelan control over their own oil reserves, the US began interfering in Venezuela economically and socially immediately, as it had in many other states from Iran to Guatemala that try to stop US domination of natural resources. That set the tone for US/Venezuela relations until the present day, which includes economic sabotage and various coup attempts as well as funding political dissidents, the basic US playbook.
So no I don't think the US is blameless for the current issues in Venezuela.

The problem isn't "oil socialism", which is a policy that works (for example, Alaska in the US, Norway, etc have paybacks to citizens or sovereign wealth funds associated with oil revenues), its entrenched corruption, which is linked more to the legacy of imperialism, which actively fosters corruption because corruption can be used as a lever to exploit the subject country, than it is to socialism.
In any case the powers that be in the US like to create these domestic refugee populations in the US because they can be used as a bludgeon to attack the country of origin with ready made operatives and source of connections/communications (see the Cuban diaspora in the US, as another example). "Block/deport" is not a logical policy, agitating against immigrants is a logical party for conservatives/nativists because it gets them populist support, but actually consummating that policy and executing a mass block/deport is actually against US interests (and here I mean business/political interests, not the interests of US citizens as a whole) because it deprives the US of 1. the above resource to use against Venezuela, 2. cheap domestic labor to exploit, 3. propaganda opportunities both in the US and Venezuela to support various imperialist narratives, etc.

I don't understand why anyone would ever say this? Like is reality not even a thing any more? There have been 2 coups just this century in Haiti performed by the US, one more if you go back to 1991, US is heavily involved behind the scenes as well, funneling money through "charity" organizations and NGOs to people in Haiti that will support US interests.
In addition the "non-interventionist" US continues to push US interests into Eastern Europe, continues to arm Israel, continues to arm various militant groups across the Middle East, continues to call for attacks on Iran, has only just recently left Iraq and Afghanistan after shitting the place up for another few decades, continues to sit in SCS, continues to assault Cuba economically and through clandestine action, continues to meddle in northern Africa, and on and on.
There are some politicians in the US who are nominally anti-interventionist, but the reality is similar to various populists in US government as well, they say they want to help the American worker or whatever, but in action, when the rubber hits the road, they are FIRMLY in the pocket of American business interests and are eager to sell out US workers to enrich capitalists. Similarly a fringe of US politics is very fire and brimstone about US intervention, but when push comes to shove they will absolutely sell out the global south the second a US Corporation comes in and tells them that their access to child slave labor in Colombia is being interrupted by the actions of a teachers union, whose members will promptly be terrorized and assassinated, or something similar.

I don't know what you're trying to say here, but if you mean to imply that western policy has no effect on Syria, Syria took in millions of refugees caused by the US invasion and destabilization of Iraq, Syria was heavily affected by the rise of militias and Islamic radicalism following the fall of Saddam and the creation of a massive power vacuum in Iraq, and the US directly funded and armed insurgents that made the Syrian civil war far worse than it should have been. So yes, Syria has, in fact, been dramatically and negatively affected by western foreign policy in recent decades.

There were attacks in Syria by German forces deployed in the late 2010s, Germany arms Israel, a colonial settler state involved in ethnic cleansing/genocide, Germany is part of the western block of states which has been long involved in interference in the Middle East in general.
That said refugees aren't showing up in Germany specifically because Germany was at fault for something, they are showing up because the refugees are traveling until they arrive at a relatively stable spot to live. Turkey, Syria, Jordan, etc have all already absorbed millions of refugees so at a certain point things continue to overflow to the next available area. Again the problem is not "refugees", the problem is the foreign adventures by imperialists that cause the refugees in the first place. However Germans will spend untold amounts of effort lambasting refugees for how radical and Islamist they are while continuing to arm (for example) Israel as it commits an active genocide and displaces millions more people who will then BECOME REFUGEES. I wonder how many of them are going to show up in the UK, France, Italy, and Germany? More than those countries want, that's for sure, but those countries will never stop blowing up brown peoples' houses for long enough to stop creating those refugees.

It's not like I'm supporting the destabilization, and I never hear about it in these discussions if I don't mention it first, its always just some garbage about how the refugees are coming in and taking over and they just need to be pushed out. Its just not going to work, the problem isn't the refugees, its the imperialism creating the refugees, stop shitting up the middle east, north africa, south america, and suddenly the refugees disappear, not because they are all dead or deported, but because they now have a chance at a decent life where they were born.
As an American I'm very critical of my government when it does identifiably evil things, and everyone else should be, too. The civil partnership in the bill is very very limited. It’s nothing like in the west.
Access to medical information is the main gain. And taxes when inheriting. But children are completely taken out of the equation. So no Co parenting, no way to make medical decisions, when the bio parent dies, child ends up in an orphanage. They cannot be adopted by the other parent. Etc. this was all blocked by PSL.
Having a celebration similar to a wedding is also discouraged. Which might seem insignificant. But I believe it will also add to people not seeing these partnerships as legitimate.
A lot of the rights described in this bill will depend on the good will of the people involved. Like picking up the child from school. Can easily be blocked by the teacher if they don’t feel like you’re a real parent. Similar when it comes to medical information. What recourse will you have if you’re not being given access? Etc
Imo, what they presented is crumbs and I don’t think it will affect day to day life of the average couple in any way. And we have PSL to blame for that.

I’m a gay person living in Poland so none of this was news to me, however, the effort to explain such is appreciated.
The bill would make living in Poland a lot easier for gay couples who want to bring their non-Polish with them to live in the country, which is my current situation. Personally, I don’t want my partnership to be „celebrated” a la church marriages anyway. This bill would be a huge step forward for a lot of LGBT people in Poland yet still leave much work to be done. I wouldn’t demean the true value of the bill just because it only accomplishes part of what should be done.

After WW1 the League of Nations was created (a predecessor to United Nations), it's purpose was to ensure international conflicts would be solved peacefully and any war avoided. Turned out of was absolutely impotent and didn't serve it's purpose at all. We have similar situation now, countries acting in bad faith are abusing the current laws without or with little pushback, and this cannot go on forever. Existing international law has run it's course and we need new laws.

The immigrants Poland wants to stop aren't war or persecution fleeing folks. Absolute majority of them are economic migrants that have been encouraged by foreign actors to go to Poland or more generally EU. They faced no danger at home, and even if they did Russia or Belarus are the first safe countries for them, so they must stay there. Asylum seeking is not a pick your resort thing, and that is current international law.

Human beings don't have infinite nor equal innate value. We all value ourselves and our loved ones more than strangers, therefore it's entirely reasonable for people to act self-interestedly and to have limits to their own altruism. Human relationships are in fact generally transactional.

As another comment said, I wouldn't be surprised if this becomes more permanent. The kickback from migrant and asylum immigration has been popular in a lot of places. The process has been abused by people that have no intention of integrating into western society and, while the violent ones are likely a minority, they cast a spotlight on the community.
